My elevation comes as a surprise, never wanted to retire:BSY

August 18, 2022 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: Veteran BJP leader BS Yediyurappa said the party has given him a big responsibility which he had not expected. Addressing a press conference after the party announced his elevation to the BJP Parliamentary Board and Central Election Committee, the former Karnataka chief minister said, “When I stepped down as CM, I decided to bring the BJP back to power with full majority.

The party recognises the efforts of workers. I never wanted to retire from politics and public life. I will ensure that the party will come back to power with more than 140 seats. We will not allow any other party to come to power in Karnataka,” he said.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai greets his predecessor and senior BJP leader
BS Yediyurappa in Bengaluru on Wednesday

The move has come as a big boost to the BJP in Karnataka as the Lingayat strongman was included in important committees amid speculation that he was sidelined after he stepped down from the CM’s post in July last year. He is now likely to play a bigger role not just in Karnataka, but also in other states. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Yediyurappa over phone and told him that his services were needed not just in Karnataka, but also across south Indian states.

“Party has given me everything. I was travelling across the state as a common party worker and our leaders saw the potential and put their faith in me. I will never stop working for the party,” he said.
Taking a veiled dig at senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah, Yediyurappa said the scene in Karnataka will change drastically in the next few days. “Some leaders who are assuming that they will become the next CM will be disappointed. People will give a befitting reply in 2023 assembly and 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Narendra Modi will become the PM again,” he said.

A senior party leader said that in the last few months, issues surrounding hijab, halal meat, textbook controversy, disallowing Muslim vendors near temples, murders in Dakshina Kannada and the Savarkar poster issue have dented the party’s image. “When Yediyurappa was CM, we did not face any such issue. He is indispensible for BJP in Karnataka,” he said.

Political analyst Prof Sandeep Shastri told TNIE that this move is a political accommodation for a senior leader who was made to step down as chief minister last year. Going by his age, which is 75+ years, many people even thought he would be included in Margadarshak Mandal. This way, it is indicating that he holds a key position in Karnataka”.

For Yediyurappa, it’s an elevation as his role has now been expanded to the national level, said Prof Shastri. It is still not known if he will have a say in selecting a CM candidate or MLA candidates in 2023, he added. State Congress Working President Ramalinga Reddy said now that the elections are nearing, the BJP is depending on Yediyurappa for votes, and once the polls are held, he will be removed.

Awareness about vascular diseases must be created among youngsters and professionals prone to vascular diseases:Karnataka Health Minister

The Vascular Surgeons association had organized a Walkathon from Bengaluru’s Town Hall to Kanteerava stadium on the occasion of World Vascular Day on Saturday,August 6. Karnataka Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar flagged off the walkathon.

Speaking to reporters at the event, Minister Sudhakar stated,It is an age of growing vascular diseases and we have limited Vascular surgeons in the country.

For a population of 1.3 billion,we have only around 500 vascular specialists.Spreading awareness about vascular health is paramount both in rural and urban areas.

We have to ensure a strict health regimen to protect our blood vessels. If this is not done,it could lead to severe health problems including Non-Communicable Diseases or aneurysms etc. These in turn could cause life threatening situations,Minister Sudhakar added.

Pointing out that some people are prone to vascular diseases,he said, every 6 seconds,a person loses his/her leg in the world.

We need to increase awareness among youngsters and those professionals who are prone to such issues because of their professions like policemen, teachers etc.Who stand for long periods of time.

Awareness must also be created among professionals who have to work in front of computers for long periods of time, who have a sedentary lifestyle.

Several likeminded vascular specialists, hospitals have come forward, organized and participated in this beautiful program. This event and its intention is very good,he said.

Minister Sudhakar also told the reporters that the Karnataka government will take all necessary measures to prevent vascular diseases.

Minister Sudhakar speaking to reporters also stated that a person from Ethiopia who had traveled to India had some symptoms of Monkeypox.

We sent samples for a lab test and it came out negative for Monkeypox yesterday, however,it was smallpox. As of now, there hasn’t been a single case of Monkeypox.

However,we are being vigilant. We are taking up surveillance measures at our state borders and we have taken all precautionary measures.

We have also made sure there is thermal screening at every port and airport round the clock. There are three officials at each place working in 8 hour shifts. This is the reason why no case has been reported in Karnataka,he said.

Haryana: Congress not to contest panchayat polls on party symbol

August 18, 2022 by Nasheman

CHANDIGARH: Haryana’s main opposition Congress will not contest the upcoming panchayat elections on its symbol, former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Wednesday said after the state legislature party meeting here.

The panchayat polls are scheduled to be held in the state in September.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Hooda, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Haryana Assembly.

State Congress chief Udai Bhan was also present in the meeting, a party statement said.

Hooda said the Congress MLAs held a detailed discussion over the Panchayat elections.

The Congress will not contest the panchayat elections on party symbol, he said.

The Congress leader also alleged that the government deliberately postponed the panchayat elections.

“Due to this, the development of villages came to a standstill and there was a lot of corruption in the absence of panchayat representatives,” he said.

“The Congress demands that rights of backward classes be ensured in the elections and they should be given the benefit of reservation,” he said.

Hooda said issues arising out of the Supreme Court’s decision earlier this year on the shamlat land (common land) were discussed in detail in the party meeting.

“Now, the government has issued an order to transfer the land in the name of panchayats.

This decision has led to an atmosphere of panic in the village because people have been living on these lands for many years and many have even sold the land further and hence it would not be right to evict them,” said Hooda.

Hooda demanded that government should call a special session of the Legislative Assembly and make changes in the Village Shamlat Land Consolidation Act.

On August 10, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had said in the state Assembly that as per Supreme Court’s directions, the mutation of the shamlat deh (common land) in the name of panchayats is not a cause of worry and aimed at stopping the illegal transfer of this land.

“We are only seeking mutation of such land in favour of the gram panchayats,” Khattar had said while asserting that mutation would not change the title.

In April, the Supreme Court had held that in respect of the land taken from the proprietors from their permissible ceiling limits under a Punjab law, it is the management and control alone which would vest with the panchayat and not the title.

Hooda had last week demanded that the state government file a review petition in the apex court.

Hooda said that the party’s upcoming programmes have also been finalised in the meeting.

“It has been decided to postpone the ‘Vipaksh Aapke Samaksh’ program to be held in Yamunanagar on August 28. It will now be on September 11 as the Congress party is going to hold a ‘Halla Bol’ rally against inflation in Delhi on August 28. Haryana will have a strong participation in this,” he said.

Before the rally, a public awareness campaign will be launched against inflation across the state, he said.
