19-year-old student set ablaze by his uncle over love affair with his relative, succumbs in B'luru

Bengaluru: A 19-year-old engineering student was allegedly set ablaze by his uncle in Bengaluru for being in a relationship with his daughter succumbed to injuries in Victoria hospital on Tuesday.

Shashank hailed from R.R. Nagar, was pursuing his engineering at a private college in Bengaluru. He was in a relationship with his cousin which his uncle, Manu alias Mahesh, father of the girl opposed and warned him against, many times before, said the police.

According to The Hindu, a few days ago Shashank had taken the girl, his cousin, to his house when she visited Bengaluru. When her family came to know about this, went to his house and took her away after creating a ruckus.

Being upset with him, his uncle and other six men abducted him in a Toyota Innova as he was walking home from college. They soaked him in petrol, set him on fire and later abandoned him in an open ground on saturday, Shashak alleged in his statement to police.

“I managed to roll on the ground and cover myself with mud to extinguish the flames. I contacted my relative Heera over the phone. She promptly arrived with my friends Saraswati and Kumar and they rushed me to the hospital,” he added in his statement.

Based on his statement, Kumbalgodu police booked Manu and the other six on charges of kidnapping, assault and attempt to murder.

Shashank suffered 80 percent burns due to the incident and passed away at Victoria Hospital on tuesday, Shashank’s maternal aunt Hira told Deccan Herald.

State Home Minister G Parameshwara has sought a report from the Kumbalgodu police and directed them to act quickly.

Mayawati says BSP to fight LS polls alone; terms NDA, INDIA coalitions anti-Dalit
BSP chief Mayawati

New Delhi: BSP chief Mayawati on Wednesday announced that her party will go it alone in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as well as in Assembly polls in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Telangana.

In a statement here, Mayawati said the BSP was open to tie-ups with regional parties in Punjab and Haryana, provided they have no truck with the ruling NDA alliance or the newly formed opposition coalition ‘INDIA’.

The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister slammed the NDA as well as the newly formed opposition coalition, alleging neither of them was favourable to the Dalits and the oppressed classes.

While the BJP-led NDA and the Congress-led INDIA alliance were strengthening themselves, BSP too was holding closed-door meetings of party workers across the country, Mayawati said.

She said the oppressed classes has to support the BSP as the Congress adopted a “casteist mindset and ignored their demands”.

“Had the Congress kept aside its casteist and capitalist mindset, worked towards the welfare of the poor and the oppressed and listened to B R Ambedkar, the need to form the BSP would not have arisen,” Mayawati said.

Do good work for state, treasury keys are in your hands: Uddhav to ex-ally Ajit Pawar

Do good work for state, treasury keys are in your hands: Uddhav to ex-ally Ajit Pawar

Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday met his former ally and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar for the first time after the NCP leader joined the Eknath Shinde government.

Thackeray, a member of the state legislative council, attended the house proceedings for a brief period. It was also his first visit to the legislature after deputy chairperson Neelam Gorhe, his one-time party colleague, joined the Shinde-led rival Shiv Sena.

“I asked him to do good work for the state and people,” Thackeray said after meeting Pawar, who is also the finance minister, at his office.

The former chief minister noted that he had worked with Pawar in his cabinet and knew his style of functioning. Pawar was Thackeray’s deputy in the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi government.

“I am confident that people of the state will get aid because he has the keys to the treasury,” Thackeray added.

Earlier this month, Ajit Pawar and eight other Nationalist Congress Party MLAs joined the Shinde government, virtually splitting the party founded by Sharad Pawar.

Oppn BJP & JD(S) jointly give no-confidence notice against Karnataka Assembly Speaker

Bengaluru: Opposition BJP and JD(S) MLAs gave a no-confidence notice against Karnataka Assembly Speaker U T Khader to the Assembly Secretary on Wednesday.

It has been jointly signed by BJP and JD(S) MLAs, including former Chief Ministers Basavaraj Bommai and H D Kumaraswamy.

“As the Speaker who has been elected by all the members of Karnataka Assembly, has lost the trust of the House, to remove him from the post, we request for an opportunity to move the motion as per rule 169 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly,” the notice read.

This move by the combined opposition came on a day when the Legislative Assembly witnessed chaotic and unruly scenes as angry BJP legislators tore papers, which were copies of the bills and agenda, and threw them at Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Lamani, who was in the Chair.

Following this, Speaker Khader suspended 10 BJP MLAs for the remainder of the Assembly session for “indecent and disrespectful” conduct in the House.

Since the beginning of the day’s proceedings in the assembly, opposition BJP and JD(S) members were protesting from the well of the House accusing the Congress government of deputing 30 IAS officers to “serve” its alliance leaders, who had met in the city on Monday and Tuesday to strategise for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Three-judge bench to hear pleas relating to criminalisation of marital rape: Supreme Court

Three-judge bench to hear pleas relating to criminalisation of marital rape: Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday said that a three-judge bench will hear a batch of petitions pertaining to criminalisation of marital rape after constitution benches conclude hearing some listed pleas.

“We have to resolve the matters concerning marital rape,” a bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices P S Narasimha and Manoj Misra said when senior advocate Indira Jaising mentioned the matter for hearing.

“My case deals with the child sexual abuse case,” the senior lawyer said.

The CJI said these matters are to be heard by a three-judge bench and these will be listed up for hearing after the five-judge constitution benches conclude hearing some of the listed cases.

Presently, a five-judge Constitution bench headed by the CJI is hearing pleas relating to regimes on grant of driving license for different kind of vehicles under the Motor Vehicle Act.

The petitions relating to abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution, which had provided special status to erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state, are also scheduled for the hearing.

The top court on March 22 had fixed the petitions on marital rape for hearing on May 9.

Prior to this, the top court on January 16 had sought the Centre’s response on the petitions pertaining to criminalisation of marital rape and the IPC provision which provides protection to a husband against prosecution for forcible sexual intercourse if the wife is an adult.

The Centre, represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, had said the issue has legal as well as “social implications” and the government would like to file its response to the petitions.

One of pleas has been filed in relation to the Delhi High Court’s split verdict of May 11, 2022 on the issue.

This appeal has been filed by a woman, one of the petitioners before the Delhi High Court.

However, two HC judges — Justice Rajiv Shakdher and Justice C Hari Shankar — had concurred for granting a certificate of leave to appeal in the Supreme Court as the matter involved substantial questions of law which required a decision from the top court.

While Justice Shakdher, who headed the division bench, favoured striking down the marital rape exception for being “unconstitutional” and said it would be “tragic if a married woman’s call for justice is not heard even after 162 years” since the enactment of the IPC, Justice Shankar said the exception under the rape law is not “unconstitutional and was based on an intelligible differentia”.

Another plea has been filed by a man against the Karnataka High Court verdict which had paved way for his prosecution for allegedly raping his wife.

The Karnataka High Court had on March 23 last year said exempting a husband from allegation of rape and unnatural sex with his wife runs against Article 14 (equality before law) of the Constitution.

The set of pleas are PILs filed against the IPC provision and have challenged the constitutionality of the marital rape exception under Section 375 IPC (rape) on the ground that it discriminates against married women who are sexually assaulted by their husbands.

Under the exception given in Section 375 of the IPC, sexual intercourse or sexual acts by a man with his wife, the wife not being minor, is not rape.

Congress to be swept away by Modi wave in 2024, says Nalin Kumar Kateel

July 20, 2023 by Nasheman

Mangaluru: The Congress will be swept away in a wave of support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BJP Karnataka state president Nalin Kumar Kateel MP said on Wednesday.

Addressing reporters in Puttur, Kateel said Congress at the national level is currently not in a position to contest elections alone and is allying with diverse groups and devising new strategies to regain power.

He said the previous attempts at forming such alliances had not worked out and the new formation will encounter the same fate. Kateel said the Congress had a history of displacing governments at the Centre including that of H D Deve Gowda after supporting them for a brief period. The Congress will never allow any other party to hold power at the Centre, he alleged.

Kateel refused to comment on the reports that the Janata Dal (S) is making efforts to join the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Can’t say right now if Seema Haider is a Pakistani spy: UP Police officer

Can't say right now if Seema Haider is a Pakistani spy: UP Police officer
Pakistan’s Seema Haider and Sachin Meena speak to media after they walked out of a jail, in Greater Noida

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Police on Wednesday said it would not be appropriate to say if Pakistani citizen Seema Haider, who entered India illegally in May and is staying with her partner in Noida, is a spy “unless we have enough proof”.

Seema (30) and her Indian partner Sachin Meena (22) were questioned by the Uttar Pradesh Police’s Anti-Terrorist Squad on Monday and Tuesday. They were first arrested by the local police in Greater Noida on July 4 but were granted bail by a court on July 7.

When asked if Seema could be a Pakistan spy, Uttar Pradesh Special Director General of Police Prashant Kumar said nothing could be said so early.

“The matter is related to two countries. Till we have enough proof, it would not be appropriate to say anything in this regard,” he said.

In her media interactions since her bail, Seema has been saying she entered India though the Nepal border and travelled to Noida in a bus to be with Sachin whom she met online.

Asked whether the entry of a Pakistani citizen in India through the Nepal border was a security lapse, Kumar said, “This is not so. Our border (with Nepal) is porus. No passport is needed there. Nothing is written on anyone’s face.”

Kumar also said no team is being sent to Nepal to probe how she entered India.

But the senior officer evaded a direct reply when asked if Seema could be deported. “The law is there in this regard and it will be followed. Action is being taken as per the legal mandate.”

On the ATS questioning of Seema and Sachin, the officer said, “All agencies are doing their work.”

The couple, who claims to have gotten married in Nepal earlier this year, had first got in touch in 2019 over online game PUBG.

On July 4, Seema was arrested by local police for entering India illegally and Sachin was held for sheltering illegal immigrants. However, they both were granted bail by a local court on July 7 and have been living together along with her four children in a house in the Rabupura area.

Seema has also said she does not wish to go back to Pakistan and wants to live with Sachin. She also claimed to have turned a Hindu.

Pakistan’s intelligence agencies have informed the country’s government that “love” is the “only” factor that led the mother of four to sneak into India to live with a Hindu man whom she befriended through an online game platform, a media report said on Monday.

July 20, 2023 by Nasheman

Ujjain: Illegal portions of properties of three persons nabbed by the police for allegedly ‘spitting’ water on a religious procession in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain were demolished on Wednesday by civic officials, police said.

Local authorities demolished the illegal parts of the properties of three accused located at Daba Road, Tanki Chowk and near Gold Bakery, said Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Akash Bhuria.

He said the list of the accused was given to the Ujjain Municipal Corporation after a case was registered against them by the police.

“The corporation found illegal constructions in their houses, which were removed after making announcements to allow the residents to remove their goods,” Bhuria said.

Police had registered a case under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for disturbing communal harmony against the trio in connection with the ‘spitting’ water incident that occurred on Monday.

Bhuria said two of the three accused were produced in a court on Tuesday and sent to a juvenile home, while the third accused was remanded in judicial custody.

According to the complaint, some people, who were part of the procession of ‘Baba Mahakal Sawari’ on Monday, saw a few youngsters standing on the balcony of a building and spitting water on them.

Later, those part of the procession shot a video of the youngsters and lodged a police complaint, Bhuria had said.

Earlier, the incident led to a protest by Hindu outfits at Kharakua police stationsion
