Poisonous snakes, Cobras, Pythons, Crocodiles recovered from passenger’s baggage at B’luru Airport

August 24, 2023 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: A significant operation at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) resulted in the rescue of more than 230 reptiles, including cobras, crocodiles, tortoises, and lizards, as Bengaluru Customs sleuths intercepted a wildlife smuggler on Monday night.

The successful operation follows the arrest of the smuggler, who was attempting to transport these creatures alive in two suitcases, according to sources from the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs.

The incident came to light when the 22-year-old smuggler from Ramnad in Tamil Nadu arrived on a Thai AirAsia flight FD 137 from Bangkok. Acting on suspicions, Customs officials detained and questioned the individual, leading them to discover the smuggled reptiles concealed within his suitcases. The seized creatures comprised poisonous snakes, lizards, and even small crocodiles.

Among the rescued reptiles were four caimans, nearly 30 iguanas, four monocled cobras, pythons, tortoises, and lizards. The investigation also revealed the tragic fate of a young kangaroo or “joey” that had been hidden within one of the containers, ultimately succumbing to suffocation during transit.

“These wildlife smugglers introduce foreign species like the monocled cobras, originating from Thailand, which could disrupt the local reptile ecosystem if released into the wild,” noted a wildlife expert.

The apprehended smuggler has been arrested under section 104 of the Customs Act and has been remanded in judicial custody. Further investigations are underway to determine his connections in Bengaluru and identify potential recipients of the smuggled reptiles.

The rescued animals were repatriated to Thailand on Tuesday night to ensure their safety and appropriate habitat.

Karnataka: New number plates mandatory for all vehicles registered before April 2019; Details here

August 24, 2023 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: The Karnataka state transport department has announced that all vehicles registered prior to April 1, 2019, must be equipped with high-security registration plates (HSRP) by November 17, 2023.

A recent notification issued on August 17, 2023, outlines that vehicle owners failing to comply with this deadline will face penalties ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000.

HSRPs, distinguished by their permanent identification numbers and chromium-based holograms, come with tamper-proof features, ensuring standardized and secure registration plates, stated a transport department official.

Approximately 1.75 crore to 2 crore vehicles were registered in Karnataka before April 1, 2019, as per the transport department’s estimates. “Starting April 1, 2019, the installation of HSRPs became mandatory for all newly registered vehicles,” shared a senior official.

The authorized HSRP manufacturers, in collaboration with vehicle manufacturers, are responsible for supplying these plates to dealers. The same system will apply to older vehicles, with orders for HSRP installation being facilitated through authorized dealers of vehicle manufacturers.

Regarding the cost of HSRPs, the official mentioned, “Authorized suppliers are chosen by vehicle manufacturers through competitive pricing. Prices may range from Rs 400 to Rs 500 for four-wheelers and between Rs 250 and Rs 300 for two-wheelers. A total of 12 states have already implemented this rule in accordance with central government guidelines.”

The Significance of HSRP Implementation

The transport department’s notification emphasizes that HSRPs prevent tampering and counterfeiting of plates, contributing to the reduction of vehicle-related crimes and facilitating easy identification of vehicles on the road.

Upon installing HSRPs, authorized dealers or manufacturers are required to update laser coding on the Vahan portal. However, vehicles lacking registration certificates, fitness certificates (for transport vehicles), or overdue road tax will not be eligible for HSRPs.

Mangaluru Airport enhances security by providing bomb suits to Airport Security Group

Mangaluru:In a concerted effort to bolster security measures, Mangaluru International Airport has taken a significant stride by procuring and delivering a state-of-the-art bomb suit to the Airport Security Group (ASG) of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). This proactive move aligns with the airport operator’s commitment to equipping the central armed police force, responsible for safeguarding this crucial national installation, with cutting-edge security apparatus. Moreover, this initiative addresses a mandate highlighted by the civil aviation security regulator.

The bomb detection and disposal squad within ASG will utilize the newly-acquired bomb suit to effectively counter any potential security threat involving explosives within the airport premises. This development not only empowers ASG personnel trained in explosives management with heightened confidence but also offers them essential protection to handle emergent security challenges. The availability of an extensive range of bomb detection and disposal equipment on-site also equips them to promptly address threats.

In December of the preceding year, the airport had previously handed over the initial set of equipment to the bomb detection and disposal squad of the ASG unit. This move was a continuation of the airport operator’s commitment, which earlier last year, included providing the ASG unit with a bullet-resistant vehicle. In line with this approach, the airport recently augmented the existing barracks to accommodate the increased strength of CISF personnel entrusted with ensuring around-the-clock security for the facility.

All these measures firmly align with the Vision 2025 established by the airport, aimed at transforming it into a preeminent hub characterized by safety, security, customer-centricity, and environmental consciousness. An airport spokesperson emphasized, “In a recent meeting with the CISF’s senior leadership, the airport management reiterated its dedication to procure and furnish additional essential equipment required by the ASG unit to execute its responsibilities effectively.”

Prakash Raj calls Chandrayaan-3 landing on Moon ‘proud moment’ after social media criticism

Prakash Raj calls Chandrayaan-3 landing on Moon 'proud moment' after social media criticism

Bengaluru: Days after Prakash Raj was criticised for his social media post on Chandrayaan-3, the actor on Wednesday congratulated the Indian Space Research Organisation for charting history as India’s third Moon mission Chandrayaan-3 landed on the lunar surface.

Raj was trolled on Monday for his post on X, formerly Twitter, viewed by many as mocking Chandrayaan-3. He later responded to the backlash by saying, “hate sees only hate” and that he was referring to an old joke.

In his latest tweet, the 58-year-old actor said the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon’s uncharted south pole was a moment of celebration for mankind.

“INDIA.. PROUD MOMENTS OF MANKIND .. THANKS #ISRO #Chandrayaan3 #VikramLander AND TO ALL WHO MADE IT POSSIBLE .. LET THIS BE THE WAY TO EXPLORE MORE WONDERS OF THE WIDE WORLD .. CELEBRATE .. #justasking,” Raj wrote in Kannada on the microblogging site.

But social media users further called out the actor for trying to change tack.

“You have already caused the damage. Don’t try to sugarcoat. Tables have turned…” said one user on X.

Another criticised Raj, known to be vocal against the government, for being a turncoat.

“2 din m Party badal liye (sic)” read the post.

“Congratulations to you too. Our chaiwala and our scientists have created history today and have given a message to all the haters. This is the #newindia that turns all curses and jokes into boons!” said another in a tweet.

On Sunday, the multiple National Award winner shared a cartoon showing a man in a shirt and sarong pouring tea. He captioned the cartoon in Kannada, writing, “Latest news: First view just arrived from the Chandrayaan #VikramLander #justasking”.

While Raj did not specify the man in the cartoon, many social media users slammed the actor for making fun of former ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) chief K Sivan.

The actor later issued a clarification saying that his earlier tweet was referring to an old joke from the era of Neil Armstrong, the American astronaut and the first person to walk on the Moon in 1969.

“Hate sees only Hate… i was referring to a joke of #Armstrong times.. celebrating our Kerala Chaiwala.. which Chaiwala did the TROLLS see?? .. if you don’t get a joke then the joke is on you.. Grow up #justasking(sic),” Raj had tweeted.

India’s Moon mission Chandrayaan-3 touched down on the lunar south pole at 6.04 pm on Wednesday, making it the first country to land on the uncharted surface.

The lander module comprising the lander (Vikram) and the 26-kg rover (Pragyan) made the soft landing near the south polar region of the Moon at 6.04 pm, less than a week after a similar Russian lander crashed.

With this touchdown on Moon to script history after a flawless 41-day voyage and less than a week after a Russian lander headed to the lunar south pole crashed, India has become the fourth country to master the technology of soft-landing on the Moon after the US, China and the erstwhile Soviet Union.

Telangana HC suspends judge who ordered FIR against CEC Kumar over minister’s poll affidavit

August 24, 2023 by Nasheman

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court has placed under suspension a special sessions judge in connection with a “direction” given by him to police for registering an FIR against Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and several others, saying the judge acted in “undue haste”.

Official sources in Hyderabad and people aware of the development in Delhi said the suspension was initiated on the administrative side against K Jaya Kumar, the judge of special sessions court for trial of MPs/MLAs, after a complaint was lodged with the high court by a senior official of the Election Commission.

Based on a private complaint filed under Section 200 of the CrPC by Raghavendra Raju, the judicial officer “acted in undue haste” without conducting any preliminary enquiry and without recording the statement of the complainant, the high court said.

Thus, there was a serious lapse in the procedure followed by the officer while discharging his duties, the sources said citing the order issued by the high court on the administrative side.

The FIR was registered on August 11 against Telangana Excise Minister V Srinivas Goud, CEC Kumar and a host of other officials after being referred by the sessions court for allegedly “tampering” Goud’s 2018 state assembly election affidavit.

The matter was referred to police by the sessions court on a private complaint which alleged that Goud, MLA from Mahabubnagar, had “tampered” with the election affidavit by suppressing facts.

While Goud was named as the first accused, CEC Kumar and several other officials were made co-accused, who the complainant alleged had colluded with the minister and closed the election affidavit without taking any further action.

The judicial officer was placed under suspension by the high court in exercise of the Telangana Civil Services Rules, 1991 “in larger public interest”, the sources said citing the order.
