BENGALURU: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Tuesday said 10 TMC of Cauvery river water will be released to the neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

He, however, said Karnataka does not have adequate water in its reservoir.

Asked when the water would be released, he said already the Karnataka government is on the job.

Meanwhile, former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said Karnataka should not release the Cauvery water because Tamil Nadu has overused the water on its crops.

Tamil Nadu was supposed to use 32 TMC on 1.8 lakh hectares but it increased the cropping area by four times, Bommai said adding that the Karnataka government officials did not protest.

Karnataka’s Almatti Dam up to brim despite scanty rain

August 18, 2023 by Nasheman

Almatti dam filled to the brim

VIJAYAPURA:  Despite scanty rainfall, the Almatti Dam, one of the largest reservoirs in the state, filled up to the brim on Wednesday evening. The water level reached the dam’s maximum of 519.60 metre and the total storage capacity of 123.081 tmcft.

Inflow into the dam began only on July 12. To fill various small dams and tanks as a precautionary measure, water is being discharged from the crest gates. The Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam Ltd (KBJNL) started releasing water into canals from July 27 and will continue to do so in a regulated manner till November 23.

On Thursday, the dam received 2,153 tmcft of water and all of it was discharged. Due to heavy rain in Maharashtra and the Western Ghats in the last week of July, the dam has been receiving over 1.5 lakh cusecs of water every day. With the inflow declining from the first week of August, the outflow was also reduced to store water to fill up the dam.

Meanwhile, the newly constituted Irrigation Consultative Committee (ICC), which will regulate and monitor water release for irrigation purposes, is scheduled to hold its first meeting on Monday at the Managing Director’s office of Upper Krishna Project in Almatti.

The meeting will be chaired by Excise Minister RB Timmapur, who is also ICC chairman. MLAs and MPs of riparian taluks of dams are members of the committee. MLAs, MLCs and MPs of Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Koppal, Raichur, Yadgir and Kalaburagi too are members.

All eyes will be on Bumrah and India’s gen-next stars during Ireland T20Is

August 18, 2023 by Nasheman

DUBLIN:  Almost 11 months after he hobbled off the field, Jasprit Bumrah will be cynosure of all eyes when he leads India against Ireland as the fast bowler’s fitness and rhythm will be tested in the three-match T20 International series, starting Friday.

The team is packed with India’s Gen-Next IPL performers like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rinku Singh and Jitesh Sharma but stakeholders in Indian cricket will keenly observe Bumrah, who will be key to the home team’s plans during the ODI World Cup starting in less than two months.

He will be bowling a maximum of just 12 overs across three games over five days but this series will allow chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, ODI captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid to get a fair idea of where the Gujarat slinger is placed in terms of match fitness.

The 50-over cricket is, though, a different beast where he will need to bowl 10 overs across two, three or maybe four-over spells.

The BCCI, on its official social media handle, released Bumrah’s bowling video, where he was seen hurrying a right-hander with a well-disguised short-ball and then almost yorked a left-hander with a toe-crusher, a soothing sight for the Indian team management.

But the match situation will be completely different and both Dravid and Rohit have once burnt their hands by rushing him too early before the T20 World Cup in Australia last year.

The results were disastrous. That was the last series he played before the longest lay-off of his seven-year international career. He was named for a home series earlier this year, only to be pulled out at the eleventh hour as he underwent surgery to treat a career-threatening injury.

The Ireland series not only gives Bumrah an ideal opportunity to add miles to his legs but will also help him get ready for the Asia Cup, where he will be pitted against the likes of Babar Azam upfront on September 2.

Ireland, led by Andrew Balbirnie with useful players like Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, and left-arm spinner George Dockrell is a quality side in the shortest format even though they are yet to win a match against India till now.

Their left-arm seamer Josh Little was an integral part of the Gujarat Titans squad last year and wouldn’t mind showing what he is capable of against an Indian team full of performers.

The players in this Indian team will be vying for a gold medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou and the core team would be keen to make the most of the three T20Is.

The one player, whose place would surely be under the scanner is Sanju Samson. He is unlikely to get into the playing XI unless head coach Sitanshu Kotak gets a standing instruction from main team management to play the Kerala man ahead of the Asia Cup.

Two exciting IPL finds — Jitesh and Rinku are expected to get their T20 India caps while Shivam Dube would be itching for a shot at redemption.

Just like Bumrah, even Prasidh Krishna is making a comeback to competitive cricket and before his lower back stress fracture injury which also required surgery, the Bengaluru fast bowler was a certainty in the ODI set-up. It is expected that selectors would check out Krishna’s form before taking a final call on the Asia Cup squad expected to be announced by the end of this week.

It will be interesting to see how players and the team management balance individual and team goals while keeping the big picture in mind.

Squads:

India: Jasprit Bumrah (C), Ruturaj Gaikwad (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson (wk), Jitesh Sharma (wk), Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Ravi Bishnoi, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan.

Ireland: Andrew Balbirnie (captain), Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Ross Adair, Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Fionn Hand, Josh Little, Barry McCarthy, Ben White, Craig Young, Theo van Weorkom.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stresses financial literacy among masses

August 18, 2023 by Nasheman

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman speaking at National CA Conference | DEBADATTA MALLICK

BHUBANESWAR: Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday exhorted chartered accountants (CAs) to leverage technology to promote financial literacy among common people to enable them to make informed decisions on their present and future needs.

Inaugurating a three-day national CA conference with the theme ‘Samvabana: CA Profession in Digital Era’, organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) here, Sithraman said people realised the real strength of digital platform during the Covid-19 pandemic while staying at home.

With financial details of registered companies available in public domain, even small retailers who found that the rate of interest offered by banks and other financial institutions on their deposits was not encouraging started investing in the stock market and mutual funds despite being aware of the risks involved.

Appreciating the financial and tax literacy drive, launched by ICAI from July 1, 2022 to educate the common man about financial planning and tax-related matters, the Finance Minister said the “Vittiya Gyan” launched in 12 different languages is not enough as a vast majority of the population of the country still speaks in multiple dialects.

Referring to the two primer books on Kui and Desia she released before attending the conference, Sitharaman said words like ‘Vittiya Gyan’ are too tough to understand for south Indians. She urged ICAI to run its financial literacy campaign in more regional languages so that the campaign can reach wider sections of the population which plays a major role in fostering economic growth of the country.

“Align your students with global practices especially in their own languages in line with the New Education Policy (NEP) to enable them compete at international level. You better know how to set up standards for the future generation,” she said. The Finance Minister appreciated the measures taken by ICAI through its various committees for capacity building of vast number of enterprises in the sector.

Describing CAs as catalysts in economic growth of the country, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan appealed them to assist the state government for better utilisation of funds received from the Centre. He said the state has received over Rs 18 lakh crore during the NDA government in the last nine years as compared to Rs 3 lakh crore during the UPA government.

Chairman of the organising committee Rajib Sekhar Sahoo made an appeal to ICAI president Aniket Suni Talati to open a centre of excellence of the institute in Odisha to which the later said he will take up the matter with the ICAI council.

Congress tries to net BJP leaders ahead of Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka

August 18, 2023 by Nasheman

BENGALURU:   Congress, which lured leaders from other parties ahead of the Assembly elections to score big, is trying a similar strategy with the 2024 Lok Sabha polls approaching. The move is causing ripples within BJP, which is struggling to find a pan-Karnataka leader, a la BS Yediyurappa, to hold the party state unit together and to fend off such threats.

Seeing an opportunity, Congress headed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and DCM DK Shivakumar, have set out to poach leaders from the saffron party. One such likely target for Congress is Yeshwanthpur BJP MLA ST Somashekar, who had called a meeting of his supporters recently where he was told to join the Grand Old Party. Nelamangala Congress MLA Srinivas, who was also present at the meeting, claimed that Somashekar is likely to join Congress.

Former union minister DV Sadananda Gowda met Somashekar and discussed various issues, including the latter’s resentment in the BJP. “Somashekar was disappointed with some BJP workers in his constituency as they had joined hands with JDS to defeat him in the Assembly polls. Siddaramaiah will accept him if he rejoins Congress.

KPCC president and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has given me the task of bringing Somashekar and his supporters back to Congress,” Srinivas asked. Shivakumar giving similar tasks to other partymen to attract leaders from other parties cannot be ruled out. Former minister KC Narayanagowda too is on the radar, sources said.

Somashekar’s switch, if it happens, could help Congress win 20 of the 28 Lok Sabha seats in the state which is what Siddaramaiah has promised the party high command. Like Somashekar, many turncoats, including former ministers Shivaram Hebbar and Byrati Basavaraj, are said to be deciding on their political futures., sources added. Congress is eyeing big leaders from BJP to field them as its candidates in Lok Sabha polls.

Mumbai is India’s most expensive city to live in: Knight Frank Affordability Index 2023

August 18, 2023 by Nasheman

Mumbai city

NEW DELHI: Mumbai, known for its bustling streets, diverse culture, and economic vibrancy, has earned a distinction as the most expensive city to live in, as per the recently released Knight Frank Affordability Index for 2023. Ahmedabad is ranked as India’s most affordable city to live in.

The issue of housing affordability has taken centre stage as cities strike a balance between economic growth and the well-being of their inhabitants.

The government’s focus on affordable housing, exemplified by the flagship “Housing for All by 2022” program, has played a pivotal role in reducing residential unit prices and increasing affordability.

To better comprehend the global affordability crisis, Knight Frank has pioneered the Global Affordability Monitor, evaluating 32 cities worldwide based on three critical parameters.

Mumbai finds itself positioned in the second-most affordable bracket among these cities, which ironically places it as the least affordable city in India.

The Knight Frank India Affordability Benchmark further corroborates Mumbai’s dire situation. With average house prices standing at around seven times the average household income, the financial burden of homeownership in Mumbai is the heaviest across all major Indian cities.

India, boasting one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, has witnessed remarkable urban expansion driven by employment and business prospects.

This growth has attracted a wave of individuals seeking upward mobility and a better quality of life. Acquiring a home symbolizes stability, achievement and social status, making residential real estate a prized possession.

This fervour for property ownership has driven prices skyward. However, in the early 2010s, the market dynamics shifted. Spiralling prices coupled with larger apartment sizes led to demand contraction, leaving developers with unsold inventory.

Regulatory reforms, such as the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act 2016 (Real Estate Regulatory Authority) RERA and the government’s affordable housing initiatives, played a pivotal role in revitalizing the market.

Measures like the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS) and infrastructure status for affordable housing projects have contributed to this shift.

The spectrum of affordability in India’s top eight cities is intriguing, particularly when viewed from 2010 to 2018. While the average apartment in Mumbai now costs seven times the average household income, it’s a notable improvement from 11 times in 2010.

Other cities such as Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Pune stand out as exemplars of improved affordability, with apartment prices at just three times the average household income.

The Knight Frank Affordability Benchmark, set at 4.5 times the average annual household income, remains a goal for cities like Mumbai, NCR and Hyderabad.

As the global housing landscape shifts toward affordability, the Indian residential market is undergoing a transformation, aligning with this global trend.

With regulatory interventions and a renewed focus on affordable housing, Indian cities are on a trajectory towards a more equitable housing landscape, one where residents can achieve the dream of owning a home without shouldering an exorbitant financial burden.

Jharkhand Government to provide free residential coaching for Tribal students

August 18, 2023 by Nasheman

RANCHI: In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the Country, Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Thursday launched a free residential coaching center for the particularly vulnerable tribal group (PVTG) at Padma Shree Dr. Ram Dayal Munda Tribal Research Center in Ranchi.

This coaching will be for different competitive examinations conducted by Jharkhand State Staff Selection Commission and Staff Selection Commission.

The span of coaching will be of 4-5 months which is scheduled to start from August 23, for which, TRI had sought applications from the interested students. To avail of this facility, the applicant should be a resident of Jharkhand and should fall in the age group of 21 to 40 years.

According to TRI officials, preference has been given to the candidates who have already applied for the posts advertised by JSSC and SSC. The last date for receipt of applications was July 30.

The Chief Minister said that one can only survive on the free ration, but neither he can study nor get employment by getting a free ration from the government.

“In such a situation, I believe that the responsibility of the government is not only to provide free ration to the people, but better policies need to be implemented on sensitive subjects like this,” said the Chief Minister. His government is moving forward and making efforts to give a new direction to the state with such ideas, he added.

Sulabh International founder Bindeshwar Pathak passes away after suffering cardiac arrest
Sulabh International founder and social activist Bindeshwar Pathak

New Delhi, Aug 15: Sulabh International founder and social activist Bindeshwar Pathak, a pioneer in building public toilets, died at AIIMS here due to a cardiac arrest on Tuesday, according to a close aide.

The aide said 80-year-old Pathak hoisted the national flag at the Sulabh International headquarters in the morning on the occasion of Independence Day and collapsed soon after.

While the aide said Pathak breathed his last at AIIMS, a source at the hospital said he was declared brought dead at 1:42 pm.

The cause of death was cardiac arrest, according to Pathak’s aide.

Sulabh International is a social service organisation that works to promote human rights, environmental sanitation, waste management and reforms through education.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the Sulabh International Social Service Organisation said, “Founder Sulabh Sanitation, Social Reform and Human Rights Movement, Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak is no more. He died of cardiac arrest at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.”

“He was rushed to the hospital after he complained of uneasiness in the midst of Independence Day celebrations at the campus of Sulabh, Palam-Dabri Road, New Delhi,” it said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled Pathak’s demise.

“The passing away of Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak Ji is a profound loss for our nation. He was a visionary who worked extensively for societal progress and empowering the downtrodden.

“Bindeshwar Ji made it his mission to build a cleaner India. He provided monumental support to the Swachh Bharat Mission. During our various conversations, his passion towards Swachhata was always visible,” Modi said in a post on X.

“His work will continue to inspire several people. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. Om Shanti,” he said, sharing two pictures of him with Pathak.

Pathak founded Sulabh International in 1970 with a vision to eradicate open defecation and unclean public toilets. The organisation’s pioneering efforts led to the development of the revolutionary Sulabh toilet, a low-cost, eco-friendly solution that has revolutionised sanitation practices across the nation.

Sulabh toilet revolutionised sanitation practices, providing millions with access to clean and dignified restroom facilities.

His vision extended beyond technology, encompassing a broader mission of eradicating the stigma associated with manual scavenging and uplifting the lives of those who had long been relegated to the fringes of society.

Through his determined advocacy and innovative initiatives, Pathak successfully raised awareness about the importance of proper sanitation and hygiene, contributing significantly to disease prevention and improved public health. In India, the name Sulabh is synonymous with public restrooms.

Pathak also started the Sulabh initiative for widows that was meant to emancipate them from all kinds of deprivations, restrictions and humiliations.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.

Indian football legend Mohammed Habib passes away

August 17, 2023 by Nasheman

Indian football legend Mohammed Habib passes away

New Delhi: Mohammed Habib, the playmaker par excellence of the 1970s who scored against Pele’s New York Cosmos in Mohun Bagan colours and made the football icon take note of his game, died on Tuesday.

The former India player was 74.

Habib, who was suffering from dementia and Parkinson’s syndrome for the past couple of years, breathed his last in Hyderabad, his birthplace.

Habib is survived by his wife and three daughters.

A bronze medallist in the 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok under the captaincy of fellow Hyderabadi Syed Nayeemuddin and manager PK Banerjee, Habib has represented the big three of Kolkata Maidan — Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting in his heydays, dominating the Mecca of Indian football for a prolonged period in the late 1960s through to the 70s.

Born on July 17, 1949, the former India captain represented the country in 35 international matches, and scored 11 goals in the process, after making his debut against Thailand in the Merdeka Cup at Kuala Lumpur in 1967.

Following a successful career that saw him gain legendary status and earn the tag of the country’s first “true professional” footballer for his refusal to accept numerous job offers that came his way owing to his on-field heroics, Habib took to coaching at the Tata Football Academy (TFA).

Later, he also acted as chief coach of the Indian Football Association academy in Haldia.

At a time when the clubs would pay meagre sum to their best players, he was unruffled and remained a professional in true sense throughout his career, for he considered playing football as his real and only profession.

One of the highlights of Habib’s career was when he played for Mohun Bagan against the visiting Cosmos Club which also featured the legendary Pele in 1977 in a friendly on a rain-soaked Eden Gardens.

Up against a visiting team that had a star-studded line up with big names like Pele, Carlos Alberto, Georgio Chinaglia and others in its ranks, Mohun Bagan held their own in a creditable 2-2 draw with midfield mainstay Habib being one of the scorers.

In one of his biggest acknowledgments, Habib was singled out by Pele after the match as one of the world’s greatest player praised his game.

Habib etched his name in the folklore of Indian football in 1970, when he played an integral part in the Blue Tigers’ bronze medal-winning run in the Asian Games.

He followed that up by helping India become the joint winners of the Pesta Sukan Cup with South Vietnam in 1971. Habib played international football till 1975, and was conferred the Arjuna Award for his contribution to the game.

Expressing his condolences, All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Kalyan Chaubey said, “The ‘Bade Miya’ of Kolkata football was my coach and mentor in TFA and Mohun Bagan. His contribution to India’s bronze medal-winning team in the 1970 Asian Games will be remembered forever. May his soul rest in peace.”

AIFF secretary general Shaji Prabhakaran said, “Mohammed Habib was one of the finest footballers of his time, and remained dedicated to the game throughout his life. I am deeply saddened by his passing away.”

On the domestic front, Habib switched over from Hyderabad to Kolkata in 1966 when he joined East Bengal. For the next 18 seasons, he played for all the three top Kolkata clubs with distinction and soon grew into a legend of Indian football.

His grit, determination and never-say-die attitude on the field inspired his contemporaries as well as generations of footballers.

Always considered a big-match footballer, Habib always shone when it was needed most. He had the rare distinction of scoring the winning goals in three Durand Cup finals in the span of seven seasons for East Bengal.

Habib was one of the few players to win the Triple Crown (IFA Shield, Durand Cup and Rovers Cup) in the same season for both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan in 1972 and 1977, respectively.
