Letter row: K'taka Min N Chaluvarayaswamy asks Guv not to fall prey to fake allegations, petitions
Agriculture Minister N Cheluvarayaswamy (left), Governor Thawarchand Gehlot (right)

Bengaluru: Karnataka Agriculture Minister N Chaluvarayaswamy on Wednesday appealed to Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot not to fall prey to “unaccountable fake allegations and fake petitions”.

Chaluvarayaswamy’s appeal comes after seven Assistant Directors of Agriculture (ADA) in Mandya district recently wrote to Gehlot alleging that the minister was putting pressure on them through the joint director to pay him between Rs six lakh and Rs eight lakh as bribe.

They even threatened to commit suicide with their families if such a “tradition” of demanding bribe is not controlled.

Subsequently, the Governor’s office handed over the letter to Chief Secretary Vandita Sharma for investigation.

Though Chief Minister Siddaramaiah called the letter fake, he ordered a CID investigation.

In the letter to the Governor, Chaluvarayaswamy said, “I humbly pray your wisdom mind not to fall prey to such unaccountable fake allegations and fake petitions.”

The minister also appealed to the Governor to order a preliminary probe if such incidents happen in future. If the initial investigation finds the letter to be genuine then an inquiry should be ordered.

“If it is found to be genuine and backed by evidence then that case should be fit for an enquiry or else the Constitutional institutions will be misused by anti-social elements and vested interests easily to bring bad name to the Government, Department and myself,” Chaluvarayaswamy said.

Claiming that the letter was “purely fake”, the minister said he was shocked after he learnt about it.

He said a preliminary probe found that the assistant directors have not written such letter.

According to him, one of the seven assistant directors who allegedly wrote the letter, is Ramesh, who is not working in Mandya. The other officials too have said they have not written a letter to the Governor.

“It is purely a handy work of vested interests who are against me. They have falsely used all the means to tarnish my image and misuse the Constitutional institution (office of the Governor).”

He termed as “unfortunate” forwarding the fake letter’ to the Chief Secretary with a covering letter signed by the Under Secretary of the Raj Bhavan.

“In the said letter it was directed to inquire the content of the petition. After that letter, the whole episode has been given different shades and colours in digital and print media to tarnish my image and the State Government,” the minister said.

Mangaluru woman lodges complaint against husband for theft of gold from cupboard at home

August 10, 2023 by Nasheman

Mangaluru: A woman residing in KPT Vyasanagar has lodged a formal police complaint against her husband, alleging the theft of a substantial amount of gold jewelry that she had meticulously stored in her home cupboard. The complainant, Renisha Noronha, has accused her husband, Mohammad Ilias, of being involved in the alleged theft.

Renisha Noronha, who resides in an apartment with her husband and their son, revealed that she had entrusted her gold jewelry to the cupboard locker at their residence. The stolen jewelry, amounting to 75 pawns of gold, encompassed a variety of pieces. These included 25 pawns of wedding gifts from her parents, 20 pawns gifted by her parents, an additional five pawns she had acquired herself, and a final set of 25 pawns bestowed by her in-laws. Renisha underscored that the knowledge of this cache of gold was shared exclusively between her and her husband.

The situation took a turn in April when a disagreement led Renisha to temporarily move to her mother’s residence. Upon her return to their apartment a month later, she discovered her husband’s week-long absence. This raised suspicions, prompting her to examine the cupboard locker, revealing the shocking disappearance of her gold holdings.

Efforts to contact Ilias bore no fruit until he finally responded to her calls three days later. He openly admitted to taking the gold and subsequently divulged his actions. Renisha claims Ilias had challenged her and even stated that he had pledged the gold at a bank for a sum of Rs 28.5 lakh. Moreover, Ilias confessed to enlisting an accomplice named Prabhakar who helped manage the gold transaction. Reportedly, Prabhakar arranged for the melted gold worth Rs 12 lakh to be sold.

Renisha Noronha’s formal complaint, lodged with the Kadri Police, targets both her husband Ilias and his associate Prabhakar.

SC judge recuses himself from hearing Umar Khalid’s plea seeking bail in UAPA case

SC judge recuses himself from hearing Umar Khalid's plea seeking bail in UAPA case
Former JNU student Umar Khalid

New Delhi: Supreme Court judge Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra on Wednesday recused himself from hearing a plea filed by former JNU student Umar Khalid seeking bail in a UAPA case related to alleged conspiracy behind the riots here in February 2020.

Khalid’s petition challenging the October 18 last year order of the Delhi High Court, which had rejected his bail plea in the matter, came up for hearing before a bench of Justices A S Bopanna and Prashant Kumar Mishra.

“This will come before some other bench. There is some difficulty for my brother (Justice Mishra) to take up this matter,” Justice Bopanna said at the outset, without assigning any reason for Justice Mishra’s recusal.

Advocate Rajat Nair, appearing for the Delhi Police, told the bench that they have filed a counter affidavit but there is an objection shown by the apex court registry on it.

“There are certain portion of statements which we have extracted, that portion is in vernacular,” he said, adding, “That statement itself is in vernacular.”

Nair said he also wants to file relevant portion of the charge sheet filed in the case.

The bench, which posted the matter for hearing on August 17, said the counter affidavit be taken on record.

“The matter can’t be taken up in this combination of the bench. Hence, list on August 17,” the bench said.

On July 12, the Delhi Police had sought time to respond to Khalid’s petition.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Khalid, had then said, “In a bail matter, what counter is to be filed. The man is inside for two years and 10 months.”

On May 18, the apex court had sought response of the Delhi Police on Khalid’s plea challenging the high court order refusing him bail in the case.

The high court in October last year had rejected his bail plea, saying he was in constant touch with other co-accused and allegations against him are prima facie true.

The high court had also said the actions of the accused prima facie qualified as “terrorist act” under the anti-terror law UAPA.

Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and several others have been booked under the anti-terror law Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and provisions of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly being the “masterminds” of the February 2020 riots, which left 53 people dead and over 700 injured.

The violence had erupted during the protests against CAA and NRC.

Khalid, arrested by the Delhi Police in September 2020, had sought bail on grounds that he neither had any criminal role in the violence nor any “conspiratorial connect” with any other accused in the case.

Before the high court, the Delhi Police had opposed the bail plea by Khalid, saying the speech delivered by him was “very calculated” and brought up issues like Babri Masjid, triple talaq, Kashmir, the alleged suppression of Muslims and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Elephant population up by 346 in Karnataka, says Forest Minister

Bengaluru: Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre on Wednesday said the elephant population in the state has increased by 346. Releasing the elephant census report conducted in May this year, he said in 2017 census, there were 6,049 elephants in the state and now there are 6,395 pachyderms.

”Although elephants are mighty wildlife species, they are under threat worldwide, including in India. In order to protect the endangered animal, the World Elephant Day is being celebrated on August 12 to create awareness about conservation of their habitat so that they can also live comfortably,” the minister said at a press conference here. According to Khandre, the elephant census is conducted every five years and the previous census was held in 2017.

In 2022, an attempt was made to take survey part of the All India Tiger Census but it did not include sample block count and population structure assessment of elephants. This method is very important for census and numerical classification of the jumbos (sex and age), he said. The minister said the elephant census was conducted from May 17 to May 19 this year simultaneously by Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. A similar census was conducted in Andhra Pradesh on the same period, he said.

The census was carried out by the Karnataka Forest Department with the technical assistance of the Indian Institute of Science (IISC) headed by Prof R Sukumar, who guided in preparing the format of the census, training the field staff, analysis of census results and report preparation, he said. According to Khandre, more than 3,400 personnel from 32 divisions of the state participated in this elephant census, which was undertaken in three ways – direct enumeration or block enumeration, transect survey or dung count method, and waterhole counting. The census was conducted in 32 divisions of the state and pachyderms were found in 23 divisions. The total number of elephants enumerated directly on the day of survey was 2,219. It was conducted in 6,104 sq km area out of 18,975 sq km area in these 23 divisions, he explained.

”Since this is the first time such a large area has been surveyed, this survey and report are highly accurate and reliable,” the minister said.
