Bengaluru bandh: Over 1,000, including 3 BJP MLAs, detained

September 27, 2023 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: The Bengaluru bandh on Tuesday was peaceful, barring a few stray incidents. An MLA and two MLCs from BJP and over 1,000 protesters were detained as a preventive measure, and were released later.

They were taken into custody near Town Hall as they tried to take out a march defying the orders of the police commissioner, who had on Monday denied permission to protesters. At Freedom Park, where the protest was held, one protester tried to hang himself with the shawl he was wearing. The policemen at the spot stopped him from taking the extreme step. As he was gasping for breath, he was given first-aid.
In the stone-throwing incident, the police arrested two persons in Jayanagar.

“The bandh was peaceful. No untoward incident was reported from any parts. Elaborate security arrangements had been made. At a few places, protesters were taken into preventive custody, while a few organisations were allowed to protest at Freedom Park,” said Police Commissioner B Dayananda.

Karnataka told to release 3K cusecs to TN for 18 days

September 27, 2023 by Nasheman

BENGALURU/MYSURU: Amid protests against release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) on Tuesday directed Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs of water to the lower riparian State for 18 days from September 28.

The CWRC issued the directive on the day when the State capital witnessed a near total bandh in response to the call given by farmers and various organisations against releasing water to TN.

“The current order (on releasing 5,000 cusecs daily) will be applicable till September 27.

So, we will discuss the directive with the State’s legal team and take a decision on the action to be taken,” Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told reporters in Mysuru while responding to a question on the CWRC directive. At the CWRC meeting, Karnataka contended that it is not in a position to release water from its reservoirs to TN.

DKS: Happy CWRC rejected TN’s plea for 12,500 cusecs

As per Karnataka’s submission before the CWRC, cumulative inflows into its four reservoirs up to September 25 is 53.04%. It mentioned that the State Government has declared 161 taluks as severely drought-hit and 34 taluks as moderately drought-hit. Of them, 32 severely drought-hit taluks and 15 moderately drought-hit taluks are in the Cauvery basin of Karnataka.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister DK Shivakumar said he is happy that the CWRC rejected TN’s plea for release of 12,500 cusecs of water. “Our officials convinced the CWRC about the distress situation in the State. The CWRC directed us to release 3,000 cusecs of water. I am thankful to the committee members for understanding our situation” he said.

As such, 2,000 cusecs of water is flowing towards TN everyday from the command areas of our dams. “We need to release around 1,000 cusecs of water more. It has been raining in the Cauvery basin areas in the State for the last couple of days. We have good inflows now,” he said. Shivakumar said the officials will present the distress situation in the State at the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) meeting to be held soon.

“There is no need for another bandh on Friday,” he added. According to Shivakumar, the Mekedatu balancing reservoir project will be a solution to the Cauvery dispute between Karnataka and TN.

“Mekedatu reservoir is the solution. There is a need to convince the people of Karnataka as well as the Tamil Nadu Gover nment. Even the Supreme Court has mentioned that allowing Karnataka to construct dams should not be a problem as long as it releases 177 tmcft of water to TN,” he said.

This will also help Tamil Nadu as Karnataka will be able to release water in distress situations, he added.

‘Have lot of missions in the conceptual phase,Venus mission already configured’ says ISRO Chairman

September 27, 2023 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman S Somanath on Tuesday said that the mission to the brightest planet in the solar system, Venus is already configured adding that payloads have been developed for the future mission.

ISRO chairman further stated that Venus is an interesting planet and exploring it will help answer certain questions in the field of space science.

“Venus is a very interesting planet. It also has an atmosphere. Its atmosphere is so thick. The atmospheric pressure is 100 times that of Earth and it is full of acids. You cannot penetrate the surface. You don’t know if its surface is hard or not. Why are we trying to understand all of this? Earth could be one day Venus. I don’t know. Maybe 10,000 years later we (Earth) change our characteristics. Earth was never like this. It was not a habitable place long long back,” he said.

Venus is the second planet from the Sun and is Earth’s closest planetary neighbour. It’s one of the four inner, terrestrial (or rocky) planets, and it’s often called Earth’s twin because it’s similar in size and density.

More recent Venus missions include ESA’s Venus Express (which orbited from 2006 until 2016) and Japan’s Akatsuki Venus Climate Orbiter (orbiting since 2016).

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe has made multiple flybys of Venus. On Feb. 9, 2022, NASA announced the spacecraft had captured its first visible light images of the surface of Venus from space during its February 2021 flyby.

Meanwhile, following the triumphant soft landing of Chandrayaan 3 on the lunar South Pole, ISRO launched the Aditya-L1 Mission to study the Sun in unprecedented detail.

In only six decades, India has rapidly ascended as a global frontrunner in space technology and exploration, with much credit attributed to the ISRO.

ISRO’s laurels extend to space exploration as well, with feats like the Chandrayaan missions for lunar exploration, the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan) in 2013—India’s inaugural interplanetary expedition—and the initiation of AstroSat in 2015, marking the country’s first dedicated astronomical pursuit.

More minority leaders may move away from JDS soon

September 25, 2023 by Nasheman

BENGALURU:   Two days after the JDS officially agreed to join the NDA, the regional party is geared for action. But even as former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil Kumaraswamy met senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader  BS Yediyurappa to seek his blessings, murmurs of dissent grew loud, and some leaders of the Janata Dal (Secular) (JDS) minority cell decided to quit the party.

In fact, mass resignations are expected soon. JDS Vice-President Syed Shafiulla Saheb had sent his resignation letter to JDS President CM Ibrahim, who passed it on to party supremo and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda. Spokesperson UT Farzana Ashraf also resigned from the party membership. At a meeting of minority leaders on Sunday, more leaders decided to quit. Ibrahim, who has been mum, is likely to take a decision at the earliest. He had quit the Congress and joined JDS a few years ago.

Meanwhile, Kumaraswamy continued to slam the state government for proposing to open bars in every village which has a population of over 3,000. In a series of posts on his social media account, Kumaraswamy said Karnataka is a prosperous state. “By providing liquor to every household, the government is giving liquor guarantee to increase its revenue,” he said. The government is making Karnataka into a drunkards’ adda,’’ he said.

The government claimed to empower women with the Shakti scheme, but is destroying their families with liquor, he added. Housing Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan slammed Kumaraswamy, and challenged him to say whether he would win from Channapatna without Muslim votes. “Let HD Revanna, Turuvekere Krishnappa, Chikkanayakanahalli, Suresh Babu, Gurmitkal Nagangouda Kandakur, Deodurga Karemma and Chennarayapatna Balakrishna say Muslims need not vote for them,” he said.

He said Kumaraswamy did not win by a big margin in Channapatna and had Muslims not supported him, he would have been defeated. On the other hand, BJP leaders too are unhappy with the alliance, as it may cost them their tickets in the Lok Sabha elections.

“JDS does not have a presence in Karnataka, their number dropped to 19 in the assembly election, and many leaders joined the Congress. Their only Lok Sabha seat of Hassan is in dispute. We are not going to benefit,” said a BJP leader, on the condition of anonymity.

Asian Games: Indian rowers rally, bag two bronze medals

September 25, 2023 by Nasheman

HANGZHOU: Indian rowers staged twin comebacks to end the day with two bronze and take their overall tally to five medals in the watersport at the Asian Games here on Monday.

The day began with the quartet of Jaswinder Singh, Bheem Singh, Punit Kumar and Ashish Goliyan narrowly missing a silver in men’s fours event.

In the men’s four event too, after lying fourth in the final 500metre of the 2000m race, the quartet showed superb coordination to finish third with 6:10.81s, and was pipped by China (6:10.04) by a fraction of seconds.

Uzbekistan took the top spot in the podium with a timing of 6:04.96.

Indian rower Balraj Panwar however missed out on a maiden Asian Games podium, finishing fourth in the men’s single sculls.

The 24-year-old from Karnal, who was among the top-three at the 1500-mark, faltered in the final 500m to slip to fourth place with a timing of 7:08.79s.

He finished less than nine seconds behind Hong Kong’s Hin Chun Chiu who took the bronze medal (7:00.55).

China’s Liang Zang secured the gold with 6:57.06, while Japan’s Ryuta Arakawa (6:59.79) and Hong Kong’s Hin Chun Chiu finished with silver and bronze respectively.

The Indian oarswomen disappointed the most, finishing bottom in the five-team field of the women’s eight with a timing of 7:05.71s, way behind China who took the gold medal clocking 6:33.61.

The Indian team of Sonali Swain, Ritu Kaudi, Priya Devi Thangjam, Varsha Kattathara, Aswathi Padinjarayil, Mrunmayee Salgaonkar, Tendenthoi Devi Haobijam, Rukmani and Geetanjali Gurugubelli hardly posed any challenge to their opponents.

Even the fourth-placed Thailand finished more than 15 seconds ahead of the Indians.

Indian rowers have now won two silver and three bronze medals.

India had bagged two silver and a bronze medal on Sunday.

1,600 illegal schools, PU colleges in state, says Karnataka education minister

September 25, 2023 by Nasheman

MANGALURU:  Stating that over 1,600 schools and PU colleges are operating illegally in the state, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa said the government is cautious in taking action against them in the interest of students who have taken admission in those institutes.

Addressing the media here on Sunday, Bangarappa said the managements that have availed permission to run these institutes and the ones that are actually running them are different, and the addresses that are mentioned are also different. In order to make them fall in line, he said the norms to avail permission have been made more strict from the next academic year.

Referring to the matter of reducing weight of school bags, he said that his department has worked out a formula to reduce the same by 1/3rd compared to the present weight.  He justified the government’s decision to conduct Board exams for Classes 9 and 11, stating that it will help them prepare for the public exams in Classes 10 and 12.

Stating that over 53,000 government school teacher posts remain vacant in the state, he said there will be marked improvement in this regard in a year. About 2,000 bi-lingual Karnataka Public Schools (KPS) will be opened, and there will be one KPS for every 2-3 gram panchayats.

To a query, the minister stated that some PU colleges conducting classes for 12 hours a day is not acceptable, and called for a stop to such practices.

September 25, 2023 by Nasheman

Bidhuri met Nadda at the BJP headquarters, days after he was issued a show-cause notice by the party for his remarks. There was no official word on what transpired in the meeting.

Amid demand by several opposition parties that take action against him, many BJP MPs have written to the Chair, alleging that Ali “instigated” Bidhuri and seeking a probe into his utterances as well.

The said remarks were expunged from Parliamentary records and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh immediately expressed regret for Bidhuri’s behaviour in the House.

Delhi govt’s first major bureaucratic reshuffle under new law, 8 IAS officers given new postings

September 22, 2023 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Delhi government Thursday effected the first major bureaucratic reshuffle after the enactment of the GNCTD (Amendment) Act, 2023, assigning new roles to eight AGMUT cadre IAS officers transferred to the city from other states and union territories.

An order issued by the Services department, a day after Chief Minister Arvinnd Kejriwal-headed National Capital Civil Services Authority (NCCSA) recommended postings of Group ‘A’ officers, also gave additional charges to some senior bureaucrats.

According to the order, Land and Building Additional Chief Secretary Manish Gupta will hold additional charge as the Chief Executive Officer of Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board and Managing Director of the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation.

He already has additional charges of the Labour and Industries Department.

A Anbarasu, who holds the charge of principal commissioner (trade and taxes), will also act as the chief executive officer of the Delhi Jal Board.

HPS Sran, who is the secretary in the public grievance commission with additional charge of additional inspector general (prisons), has been appointed as secretary in the information technology department and managing director of Geospatial Data Limited.

Art, culture and languages department secretary Chokha Ram Garg has been given additional charge of director Union Territory Civil Services.

The Assam Goa Mizoram and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre officers awaiting postings too have been given charge of different departments.

These IAS officers are: Vinod P Kavle (2008 batch) who has been given the charge of secretary in social welfare and women and child development departments; Anil Kumar Singh (2011 batch) now posted as registrar (cooperative societies).

Ajay Kumar Bisht (2011) batch has been posted as special commissioner in trade and taxes department, the order said.

The NCCSA on Wednesday recommended the posting of eight IAS officers awaiting posting since their transfer to Delhi a couple of months ago, as well as disciplinary proceedings against some serving officers of the Delhi government.

The Authority headed by Chief Minister also includes chief secretary and principal secretary (home) of Delhi government. It takes call on services matters, including transfer and posting of Group ‘A’ officers and disciplinary action against officials concerned in the Delhi government.

It was created through an ordinance of Centre (now replaced by GNCTD Amendment Act, 2023) that reversed the effect of a Supreme Court verdict in May that gave the Delhi government executive control over services matters that was earlier exercised by the Lt Governor.
