Teaching Kannada, other subjects to be made mandatory in Madrasas, says Minister Krishna Byre Gowda
Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda

Belagavi: Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has said that teaching Kannada, Mathematics, Science and Social Science will be made compulsory in Madrasas in the state, as the inclusion of additional subjects will help the students remain a part of mainstream society.

Responding on behalf of Wakf and Minorities Welfare Minister BZ Zameer Ahmed to a question put forth by Abdul Jabbar on behalf of JD(S) legislator BM Farooq during the Question Hour of the Karnataka Legislative Council in the city on Wednesday, Gowda said that students at Madrasas will be taught not merely religious texts but also other subjects to help improve their social life.

“The state government has formulated several projects for this. A pilot project will be implemented at Madrasas under registered Wakf institutions as well as at registered Wakf properties in the state to teach the students Kannada, English, Mathematics, Science and Social Science, among other subjects, for two years,” said the minister.

“Discussions have been held for several years regarding various subjects being taught at Madrasas, to prevent the students from being left out of mainstream society. Our government has now decided to implement the plan to add other subjects to the curriculum at Madrasas, starting this year. The plan will initially be implemented in 100 schools on trial basis,” Gowda explained.

“In addition, the government has planned for Class 10, Pre-university and undergraduate courses in national and state-level open schools,” said Gowda.

Sri Lanka arrests 21 Indian fishermen for alleged poaching in its waters

December 8, 2023 by Nasheman

Colombo: At least 21 Indian fishermen have been arrested for allegedly poaching in Sri Lanka’s territorial waters, the island nation’s Navy has said, taking the total number this year to 195.

The Indian fishermen were arrested and their four trawlers were seized on Wednesday in the northeastern waters off Mannar and Kovilan.

The Navy said in 2023 they had arrested 195 Indian fishermen for poaching in Sri Lankan waters.

The fishermen issue is a contentious one in the ties between India and Sri Lanka, with Lankan Navy personnel even firing at Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait and seizing their boats in several alleged incidents of illegally entering Sri Lankan territorial waters.

The Palk Strait, which is a narrow strip of water separating Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka, is a rich fishing ground for fishermen from both countries.

There have been periodic instances of Indian fishermen being arrested by Sri Lankan authorities for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line and fishing in Sri Lankan waters.

ICC Rankings: Ravi Bishnoi becomes world's No.1 T20I bowler
Young Indian leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi

Dubai: Young Indian leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi on Wednesday rose to the top spot in the ICC T20I bowling chart on the back of his recent player of the series-winning performance against Australia.

The 23-year-old was India’s go-to bowler in the just-concluded series against Australia, taking nine wickets from five games.

Bishnoi, who is on 699 rating points, has jumped five places to displace Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan (692) from the top slot.

Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga and England’s Adil Rashid, who both have 679 points, are in joint third.

Sri Lanka’s Maheesh Theekshana (677) completes the top five.

Bishnoi is the only Indian bowler in the top 10 in the shortest format even as Axar Patel climbed nine spots to be 18th.

Meanwhile, the swashbuckling Suryakumar Yadav, who captained India during their 4-1 T20I series win against Australia, held on to the top spot among batters, while opener Ruturaj Gaikwad dropped a place to be seventh.

Hardik Pandya retained the third spot in the all-rounders’ list, despite missing the series against Australia due to injury.

December 7, 2023 by Nasheman

Koppal: Gangavathi Town Police have arrested two men for the recent incident in Gangavathi town of assault of a visually challenged Muslim senior citizen, Hussain Saab, and forcing him to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’.

Koppal District Superintendent of Police Yashoda Vantagodi has said in a press meeting that the arrested men have been identified as Sagar Shetty Kalki, a software engineer and resident of Kuvempu Layout, and Narasappa Danakayara, a resident of Kallappana Camp in Gangavathi town.

“We have investigated various aspects of the case, but are yet to get proof of the arrested men having forced Hussain Saab to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’. The suspects had also been accused of setting his beard on fire, but are yet to get proof of this too,” said the SP.

The officer, speaking on the incident, said that Hussain Saab was returning from Hospet to his house at Mehboob Nagar in Gangavathi at night on November 25, when he found a couple of young men on their bikes and requested them to drop him home. The open letter addresses key aspects of the electoral process, highlighting that failure to vote for the right candidate is equivalent to concealing testimony and may result in adverse consequences, including potential challenges to citizenship documentation and legal status.

It advocates for the election of leaders who prioritize national development, safeguard human life and property, and prevent the rise of oppressive regimes.

Syed Shabbir Ahmed Nadvi’s letter also points out the potential repercussions of neglecting the voting process, such as the weakening of evidence for Indian citizenship, termination of legal status, and the possibility of unsuitable leaders ascending to power. Specific instructions are provided for voter registration, including repeated encouragement for registration, training of volunteers, and enrollment of eligible youth.

Additionally, the open letter calls on community leaders, village officials, and intellectuals to actively support and promote voter registration initiatives. It underlines the importance of ensuring consistency in the spelling of names across various identification documents and encourages households to verify and correct entries in the Voters’ List.

The support and validation from prominent figures within the Muslim community, including Hazrat Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani Saheb and Hazrat Maulana Syed Mohammed Ashraf Sahib Kachochvi, further strengthen the call for civic engagement.

Father of Mahadev app scam accused found dead in Chhattisgarh; cops suspect suicide

December 7, 2023 by Nasheman

Durg: The father of a man named as an accused in the Mahadev betting app scam has been found dead under suspicious conditions at a village in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district, a senior police official said.

The body of Sushil Das (62), who was missing since the last two days, was found in a well at Achhoti village under Anda police station limits on Tuesday afternoon and prima facie it looks like a case of suicide, Durg Senior Superintendent of Police Ram Gopal Garg said.

The deceased was the father of Asim Das, an alleged cash courier in the case arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Sushil Das, who worked as a security guard in a private company, was missing since Sunday evening, Garg added.

Prima facie, it seems to be a case of suicide, but the exact reason behind the death was yet to be ascertained, the official said.

The body was sent for post-mortem examination and further investigation was underway, he added.

Asim Das and another accused, constable Bhim Singh Yadav, were arrested by the ED on November 3.

The ED claimed that a forensic analysis and a statement made by cash courier’ Das had led to “startling allegations” that Mahadev betting app promoters have paid about Rs 508 crore to outgoing Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel so far, and that “these are subject matter of investigation”.

Baghel had stoutly denied the allegations and accused the BJP of misusing the ED.

Asim Das was arrested by the central agency in Raipur after it claimed to have recovered Rs 5.39 crore in cash from him.

He was allegedly sent by the app promoters from the UAE “especially, to deliver a large amount of cash for electioneering expenses of the ruling Congress Party”, according to the ED.

“Asim Das has admitted that the seized funds were arranged by the Mahadev app promoters to be delivered to one politician ‘Baghel’ for upcoming election expenses in the state of Chhattisgarh,” the agency had said in a statement issued before the two-phase polling on November 7 and 17.

On November 25, Das had submitted before a special PMLA court that he had been framed as part of a conspiracy and he had never delivered cash to politicians.
