Bangladeshi man held for sexually harassing flight attendant on board Muscat-Dhaka flight

September 8, 2023 by Nasheman

Mumbai: A 30-year-old Bangladeshi national was arrested here for allegedly sexually harassing a female flight attendant on board a Muscat-Dhaka flight travelling via Mumbai, a police official said on Friday.

The incident took place in the early hours of Thursday some time before the Vistara flight was scheduled to land at the Mumbai international airport, he said.

“The accused, identified as Mohammed Dulal, who is a Bangladeshi national, was going to Dhaka from Muscat via Mumbai on a Vistara flight. Half an hour before the plane was to land in Mumbai, Dulal got up from his seat, hugged a female flight attendant and tried to kiss her,” the official said.

He also tried to flash at other cabin crew members and passengers when they tried to intervene, he said.

The accused flyer also did not listen to the flight captain when the latter was reading out a red warning card, declaring him an unruly passenger, he said.

After landing at the Mumbai airport, the accused was handed over to security officers, who took him to the Sahar police station, the official added.

Based on a complaint lodged by the flight attendant, a first information report (FIR) under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against the accused and he was placed under arrest, he said.

He was produced in a local court, which remanded him in police custody till Friday, he said.

Firing between security forces, armed men in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district

September 8, 2023 by Nasheman

Imphal: Firing between security forces and armed men has been reported from Pallel area of Manipur’s Tengnoupal district since early hours of Friday, officials said.

According to officials, firing started around 6am and has been continuing intermittently.

There are no reports of injuries or casualties as of now, they said.

Security forces are monitoring the situation.

This comes two days after thousands of protesters gathered at Phougakchao Ikhai in Bishnupur district on Wednesday and tried to break through army barricades in an attempt to reach their deserted houses in Torbung.

Tension was palpable in the area, with security forces comprising personnel of RAF, the Assam Rifles and Manipur Police firing tear gas shells to bring the situation under control, officials said.

A day before the protest, full curfew had been clamped in all the five valley districts of Manipur as a preventive measure.

More than 160 people have been killed and several hundreds injured since ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3, when a “Tribal Solidarity March” was organised in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal valley, while tribals, including Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mostly in the hill district.

‘I said nothing controversial’: Karnataka HM G Parameshwara

BENGALURU: A day after Home Minister G Parameshwara kicked up a row by questioning the origin of the Hindu religion, he defended his statement on Wednesday and said that all he meant was religions came into existence for the good of mankind.

Taking part in the Teachers’ Day function organised at his home constituency Koratagere in Tumakuru district on Tuesday, Parameshwara said, “It still remains a question when did the Hindu religion take birth and who gave birth to it. Buddhism was born in India. Jainism has its roots in India. Islam and Christianity came from foreign countries. But if you analyse, the summary of all these (religions) is to do good for mankind.”

Parameshwara’s statement soon snowballed into a controversy as the video of his speech went viral on social media on Wednesday. BJP leaders attacked the home minister for his statement and demanded that he apologise for it.

Former chief minister BS Yediyurappa said Parameshwara’s statement is condemnable. Demanding the home minister’s apology, BJP leader and former minister KS Eshwarappa said Parameshwara had no right to talk about the Hindu religion. Former minister Dr CN Ashwath Narayan said that the home minister should think about why was he named Parameshwara.

Parameshwara defended that he said nothing controversial. “What is wrong with my statement? I was speaking about Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s works on comparative religion and said that the summary of all religions is one and the same. You should see what I have stated later. I have said the Hindu Dharma has put the foundation for it, which is Shanti Mantra (Peace). Is there anything wrong with it?” he said.
He attacked the BJP leaders for allegedly projecting his statement as controversial for political reasons and he is ready to answer them. Reacting to the development, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said, “I am proud to be an Indian and a Hindu.”

Meanwhile, in connection with the FIR registered against him in UP, Minister Priyank Kharge said that he is ready to face the case legally. Defending his statement, the minister stated he had not spoken against any religion.

September 7, 2023 by Nasheman

Rahul Gandhi

NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is on a week-long visit to Europe, will interact with European Union (EU) Parliamentarians and ministers besides having interaction with university students and Indian diasporas.

Rahul, who left on Tuesday night, will visit Belgium, France, Holland and Norway. Sources said that Gandhi will meet EU MPs in Brussels on Wednesday. Besides meeting with the diasporas, the Congress leader will hold a press conference in Brussels.

While Rahul’s visit coincides with the G-20 meeting, scheduled to take place on September 9-10, Congress leaders said that it has nothing to do with his trip. In the past, Rahul’s foreign tours have sparked controversies as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleges that n his speeches.

“It’s just a coincidence that his meeting coincided with the G-20 meeting. Gandhi will get busy with upcoming state elections this month. That is why the Europe trip is planned now,” said the leader.

In Paris, Gandhi will meet French lawmakers and will meet NRIs on September 8. The leader said that Rahul will address a press conference in Paris too. In Holland, he will interact with students of Leiden University at The Hague. His next stop would be Norway where he is expected to meet ministers, the leader of the Opposition who was a former Prime Minister, MPs, industrialists, and Indian diasporas.

At ASEAN-India Summit, PM Modi calls for rules-based post-Covid world order

September 7, 2023 by Nasheman

JAKARTA: Calling for building a rules-based post-COVID world order, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the progress of a free and open Indo-Pacific and elevating the voice of the Global South is in the common interest of all.

In his address at the annual ASEAN-India summit here in the Indonesian capital, Modi described the 10-nation grouping as the epicentre of growth as the region plays a crucial role in global development.

ASEAN is considered one of the most influential groupings in the region, and India and several other countries including the US, China, Japan and Australia are its dialogue partners. India supports the ASEAN outlook on Indo-Pacific, Modi told the leaders of the grouping.

“The 21st century is Asia’s century. It is our century. For this, it is necessary to build a rule-based post-COVID world order and efforts by all for human welfare,” the prime minister, co-chairing the summit, said.

“The progress of free and open Indo-Pacific and elevating the voice of the Global South is in the common interest of all,” he said.

The prime minister also reaffirmed that ASEAN is the central pillar of India’s Act East Policy and it fully supports ASEAN centrality and its outlook on the Indo-Pacific.

“Our history and geography connect India and ASEAN. Along with shared values, regional unity, peace, prosperity, and a shared belief in a multipolar world also binds us together,” he said, adding the grouping holds a “prominent place” in India’s Indo-Pacific initiative.

It was the first summit between the two sides since the elevation of their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership last year.

“Today, even in an environment of global uncertainties, there is continuous progress in every field in our mutual cooperation. This is a testament to the strength and resilience of our relationship.”

In his opening remarks, Modi said: “ASEAN matters because here everyone’s voice is heard, and ASEAN is the epicentre of growth because the ASEAN region plays a crucial role in global development.”

“‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ — ‘one earth, one family, one future’, this sentiment is also the theme of India’s G-20 Presidency,” Modi noted.

ASEAN-India dialogue relations started with the establishment of a sectoral partnership in 1992.

This graduated to a full dialogue partnership in December 1995 and a summit-level partnership in 2002. The ties were elevated to a strategic partnership in 2012.

The 10 member countries of ASEAN are Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia.

The ties between India and ASEAN have been on a significant upswing in the last few years with the focus being on boosting cooperation in the areas of trade and investment as well as security and defence.

September 6, 2023 by Nasheman

Pallekele (Sri Lanka): Wicketkeeper batter KL Rahul, whose fitness is under the scanner, was on Tuesday named in India’s 15-member World Cup squad as the selectors drafted in seven batters and four all-rounders for the tournament.

Rahul has been out of action for months due to a hamstring injury. He is part of the ongoing Asia Cup but is yet to feature in a match. His comeback was delayed due to a niggle he suffered ahead of Asia Cup.

“There were a couple of fitness issues we had but all three players have come back, KL is looking good. We feel this squad gives us the best balance for this World Cup,” chief selector Ajit Agarkar said.

“KL looked really good there but picked up a niggle just before the Asia Cup. He has gotten over it. He is an important player for us and we are happy to have him.”

Hardik Pandya was named the vice captain of the Indian squad.

What suddenly happened that India needs to be called only Bharat, asks Mamata

September 6, 2023 by Nasheman

Kolkata : Asserting that India is Bharat, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday questioned what suddenly happened that the country should be called only Bharat.

Referring to the controversy over a G20 dinner invite in the name of ‘President of Bharat’, she said the world knows the country as India.

“I heard that India’s name is being changed. The G20 invite that went out in the name of the honourable president has Bharat written on it. We call the country Bharat, what is new in this? In English, we say India… There’s nothing new to be done. The world knows us as India. What happened suddenly that the name of the country needs to be changed?” she asked, addressing a government function here.

“History is being rewritten in the country,” she added.

Banerjee also attacked Governor CV Ananda Bose, alleging that he was holding back bills passed by the state assembly.

“The governor’s actions are an attempt to paralyse state administration. He cannot hold back finance bills,” she said.

“If need be, I will sit on dharna outside the Raj Bhavan,” she said.

The chief minister also alleged that the governor was interfering in the functioning of schools, colleges and universities in the state.

“If the governor continues to interfere in the functioning of universities, we will block the funds,” she said.
