Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy hospitalised after nose starts bleeding at press meet
Union Minister and JD (S) leader HD Kumaraswamy seen covering his nose during a press conference, in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy was hospitalised here after his nose started bleeding during a press conference on Sunday.

Kumaraswamy, who is the JD(S) second-in-command, was addressing reporters after a meeting with the BJP leaders when he noticed blood coming out of his nose.

The Union Minister, holding steel and heavy industries portfolio, tried to wipe off the blood, but soon it began trickling down his chin and then fell on his white shirt for everyone to see.

The unexpected turn of events baffled everyone present there.

Quickly, his son Nikhil Kumaraswamy rushed him to a private hospital.

Later speaking to media, Nikhil said there was nothing to worry as the doctors were attending to him.

According to him, due to the hectic schedule, his father did not take rest, which could be the reason behind the incident.

Netaji’s grandnephew appeals to PM Modi to bring back his remains from Japan by Aug 18

Netaji's grandnephew appeals to PM Modi to bring back his remains from Japan by Aug 18
Chandra Kumar Bose, grandnephew of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, speaks to the

Kolkata: Legendary freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose’s grandnephew Chandra Kumar Bose on Sunday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bring back the “mortal remains of Netaji” from Japan’s Renkoji temple by August 18.

He also said a final statement should come from the central government on the matter so that “false narratives” about Netaji are laid to rest.

Stating that the NDA-led government took initiative to declassify files related to the freedom fighter, Bose said after the release of all the “10 inquiries – national and international”, it is evident that “Netaji perished on August 18, 1945” in an air crash in Taiwan.

“It is therefore imperative that a final statement is made from the Government of India so that false narratives about the liberator of India are laid to rest,” Bose wrote in a letter to Modi on Sunday.

“My humble appeal to you is to bring back the mortal remains of Netaji from Renkoji to India by August 18, 2024,” he said.

Bose also a former vice president of the West Bengal BJP, said the declassification process has exposed secret files and documents, “which conclusively establish that Netaji died in this air crash on August 18, 1945”.

He said that Netaji wanted to return to India after Independence, but could not as he died in the air crash.

“It is highly insulting that Netaji’s remains have been kept at the Renkoji temple,” Bose said.

“We have been writing to the prime minister for the last three-and-a-half years, that in order to honour the liberator of India, his remains must touch Indian soil,” he said.

Bose maintained that Netaji’s daughter Anita Bose Pfaff wants to perform his last rites as per the Hindu tradition.

“I think the Government of India must respond. If they feel that these remains are not of Netaji, then maintenance should not be provided to keep those at Renkoji. A statement is expected from the prime minister regarding this,” he said in the interview.

Bose said a few years ago, his family members had visited the Renkoji temple and met the high priest there, who stated that Netaji fought for the freedom of India and as such, his remains should be taken to India.

Netaji’s grandnephew said the icon’s remains should be brought to Delhi and a memorial built to pay homage to the leader.

“It is very unfortunate that no response has come from the government or the prime minister,” Bose said.

In his letter to Modi, Bose said the circumstances of Netaji’s death from an air crash while leaving Taiwan in a Japanese military aircraft in the aftermath of Japan’s surrender in August 1945, perhaps with a plan to make his way to the Soviet Union to continue the struggle, was seen by many as just another ruse to escape his enemies.

He claimed that his brother Sarat Chandra Bose and widow Emilie, however, did not have any definite knowledge of Netaji being alive after August 18, 1945.

There is no doubt of the genuine disbelief among some that Netaji perished in the manner described in a host of contemporary accounts from multiple sources, said Bose.

“After all, here was a man who had once given the slip to the British and undertook an arduous trek from Calcutta through north India to Afghanistan, eventually reaching Berlin by air through Moscow. Only a few years later in the midst of a raging world war, he survived an even more perilous voyage by submarine from Germany to South East Asia. How could such a man die!” he said in the letter.

“The… Justice Mukherjee Commission of Inquiry 2005 finding that Netaji did not die in the said air crash was found to be based on fundamental errors and the Government of India thus rejected it,” Bose said.

Maintaining that an array of “unscrupulous persons” found plenty of scope and opportunities for exploitation over the issue, he said from around the mid-1960’s began the phenomenon of the re-appearance of Netaji.

Pregnant horse brutally attacked six persons booked in Kerala

July 29, 2024 by Nasheman

Kollam (Kerala): Six persons have been booked for brutally beating up a pregnant horse tethered on the premises of a local temple in this South Kerala district, police said on Sunday.

The shocking incident happened on Thursday and the assault against the animal caught widespread public attention after its CCTV visuals went viral on social media platforms.

In the visuals, a man can be seen restraining the horse, which is five-months pregnant, and five others attacking it with their hands, feet and sticks.

During a medical examination of the animal, it was found to have injuries and swelling all over its body.

As the visuals went viral, several persons, including state Minister for Animal Husbandry J Chinchu Rani, vehemently criticised the attackers.

“The incident has brought disgrace to the cultural society and to the entire state. Stringent action will be taken against the culprits,” she told the media on Sunday.

Based on the complaint of the horse’s owner, the police have registered a case against six persons for attacking the animal.

The case has been registered under sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and an investigation has begun, police said.

Mangaluru Mayor announces resumption of ‘Tiger’ operation to clear street vendors from footpaths

Mangaluru Mayor announces resumption of 'Tiger' operation to clear street vendors from footpaths
Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur

Mangaluru: Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur has announced the relaunch of the ‘Tiger’ operation in Mangaluru on July 29, aimed at clearing footpaths of street vendors to improve pedestrian access and cleanliness. The operation will target prominent areas of the city where footpaths are often obstructed by vendors.

Addressing reporters after a phone-in program at the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) office on Wednesday, Mayor Shetty detailed the clearance plans, which will focus on five key business zones within the MCC administration limits. These zones include two locations near Lady Goschen Hospital and one each in Surathkal, Mannagudda, and Kavoor. The operation will specifically target businesses set up in tents or permanent structures along roadsides, requiring them to vacate the space. However, pushcart vendors will be allowed to continue their trade by the roadside.

Mayor Shetty emphasized that the clearance is necessary to address pedestrian accessibility and road cleanliness. He assured that after the clearance, the MCC would provide necessary facilities to the affected businesses within a month, allowing them to continue their operations without inconveniencing citizens.

The mayor explained that the MCC had previously allowed these businesses to operate on humanitarian grounds. However, efforts to clear roadside stalls, particularly along Airport Road, had met with resistance from vendors who filed police complaints against authorities and attempted to intimidate officers, he noted with disappointment.

Mannagudda Corporator added that local residents had also raised concerns about the business zone in Mannagudda, supporting the need for action.

The press meeting was attended by Deputy Mayor Suneetha, Deputy Commissioner of the MCC Girish Nandan, and the president of the MCC Standing Committee, who all expressed their support for the operation’s objectives to restore public access and cleanliness in the city.

Moulana Azad Model PU Colleges to open in Manjanady, Pudu

July 25, 2024 by Nasheman

Mangaluru: The State Government has approved the establishment of Moulana Azad Model Pre-University (PU) Colleges in Manjanady and Pudu, located in the Dakshina Kannada district. These colleges, managed by the Department for Minority Welfare, are part of a broader initiative to launch 25 such institutions across the state beginning in the current academic year.

As outlined in the 2024-25 budget, the Ministry for Minority Welfare’s Haj and Waqf Department has issued orders to commence Pre-University Courses (PCMB – Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology) in 25 Moulana Azad Model Schools that have their own buildings. This expansion aims to enhance educational opportunities for minority communities throughout the state.

The decision to upgrade these schools and add PU sections was made during a meeting on June 10, attended by Minority Welfare Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan. Factors such as the minority community population, requests from elected representatives, district office reports, and other considerations played a role in determining the locations for these new colleges.

To support the academic programs, 175 new guest faculty positions will be created, with each of the 25 selected schools receiving seven posts. Lecturers will be appointed in subjects including Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Kannada, English, and Urdu.

In addition to the two colleges in Dakshina Kannada (Manjanady and Pudu), the government order includes the establishment of colleges in several other districts: Haveri (Savanur and Haveri), Kalaburagi (Jevargi and Kalaburagi), Raichur (Raichur and Sindhanur), Koppal (Gangavathi and Koppal), and one college each in Ballari, Bagalkota, Bidar, Bengaluru North, Belagavi, Davangere, Hubballi, Hassan, Kolar, Mysuru, Shivamogga, Tumkur, Vijayanagara, Vijayapura, and Yadgir.

Former BJP MP Pratap Simha defends Siddaramaiah amid MUDA controversy

Former BJP MP Pratap Simha defends Siddaramaiah amid MUDA controversy
Former Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha

Mysuru: Former Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha has spoken in defense of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, describing him as a “mass leader” and affirming that he is not corrupt. Simha made these comments during a media briefing held at the BJP office in Mysuru on Wednesday.

Addressing the ongoing controversy over the allocation of a plot by the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA), Simha stated, “I still don’t call Siddaramaiah corrupt.” He suggested that the Chief Minister should return the disputed plot to set a positive precedent. “You should return the land and don’t spoil the reputation by holding onto it. Siddaramaiah is a mass leader. He is not very wealthy compared to other Chief Ministers in the state. Don’t let your charisma shrink. Immediately return the land to MUDA and maintain your dignity,” Simha urged.

Simha also called for an investigation into the MUDA plot allocation by respected justices such as Santosh Hegde and N. Kumar. He implied that if any wrongdoing occurred, it may have been unintentional. “You may have made a mistake without realizing it. By returning the property, MUDA will benefit by 4 thousand crores,” he added.

Paris Olympics 2024: Nita Ambani re-elected unanimously as IOC member
Nita Ambani

Paris: Indian sports administrator Nita Amabani was on Wednesday re-elected unanimously as member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), ahead of the Paris Olympics.

Ambani won unanimously with 100 per cent of vote at the 142nd IOC session here.

“I am deeply honoured to be re-elected as a member of the International Olympic Committee. I would like to thank President (Thomas) Bach and all my colleagues in the IOC for their faith and trust in me,” Ambani said.

“This re-election is not just a personal milestone but also a recognition of India’s growing influence in the global sporting arena. I share this moment of joy and pride with every Indian and look forward to continuing our efforts to strengthen the Olympic Movement in India and around the world,” she added.

Ambani was first appointed to join the prestigious body in 2016 at the Rio Olympic Games. Since then, as India’s first woman to join the IOC, Ambani has already made great strives for the association, whilst also championing India’s sporting ambitions and Olympic vision.

This includes recently hosting the first IOC session in Mumbai in 40 years in October 2023.

As founder and chairperson of the Reliance Foundation, Ambani seeks to empower millions of Indians with resources and opportunities.

She drives various initiatives across sport, education, health, art and culture — all aimed at improving the lives of people across the country.

As part of a long-term partnership with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Reliance Foundation has opened the first-ever India House at the Paris Olympics.

India House will be a “home away from home” for athletes, a place to celebrate wins, and share India’s Olympic journey with the world.

It demonstrates India’s ambitions to become a dominant force in global sports, fostering greater success at the Olympics and charting a course towards hosting the Games in the future.
