Alert railway cop saves woman hit by train at Maharashtra's Jalgaon station

Jalgaon: In a bone-chilling incident at Jalgaon railway station in Maharashtra, a Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel successfully rescued a woman, who was hit by a train while trying to cross the railway tracks on Wednesday. The dramatic rescue was captured on the station’s CCTV camera.

The footage shows the cop, Chango Patil, observing the woman attempting to cross the tracks just as a train approaches the platform. Acting swiftly, he runs towards her as she struggles to climb onto the platform. Despite his quick response, Patil’s initial attempt to pull her to safety fails, and she becomes trapped between the coach and the platform.

The train subsequently hits the woman and drags her for several meters. Patil immediately races to her side and manages to rescue her from the dangerous situation.

Following the rescue, other officers and passengers on the platform assisted in transporting the woman to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, as reported by NDTV.

Opposition leaders file police complaint against Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma over “Miya” comment

Opposition leaders file police complaint against Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma over “Miya” comment
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati: A day after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asserted that he “will take sides” and “will not let Miya Muslims take over Assam”, eighteen opposition parties have filed a police complaint at the Dispur police station accusing him of trying to ‘promote enmity’ based on religion and race.

According to a report in The Indian Express, the parties have accused Sarma of “criminal conspiracy” aimed at creating unrest in the state, warning that a “riot-like situation” could ensue unless he is “arrested or restrained.” Bhupen Borah, chief of Assam Congress, alleged that Sarma is provoking communal riots and making inflammatory statements even within the assembly. Borah also indicated that they plan to write about the issue to the President.

This comes amid rising inter-community tensions in Assam, which intensified following the alleged gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon district on August 22. Sarma and several of his ministers have termed the incident, in which the accused are Bengali-Muslims, an “attack on the indigenous,” as mentioned by IE.

In response to accusations of partiality, Sarma reaffirmed his stance, stating, “I will take sides. What can you do about it?” The Chief Minister’s remarks included a controversial assertion that he would not permit “Miya Muslims” — a pejorative term for Bengali-speaking Muslims in the state — to dominate Assam. Sarma said, “Why will people from Lower Assam go to Upper Assam? So that Miya Muslims can take over Assam? We won’t let it happen.”

Sarma has a history of making provocative statements targeting specific religious communities. Last year, he remarked that he would clear Guwahati’s footpaths of “Miya” vegetable vendors. Earlier this month, he accused the University of Science and Technology in Meghalaya (USTM) which is owned by a Bengali-Muslim, of engaging in ‘flood jihad,’ claiming that the university’s hill demolitions for new construction had contributed to waterlogging issues in the capital city.

Virat Kohli’s fake video blasting Shubman Gill goes viral on internet, netizens say ‘AI is Dangerous

August 30, 2024 by Nasheman

Like Kohli, Shubman Gill, another promising top-order batter, also made his mark on the international stage after his successful stint in the U-19 World Cup in 2018. Many cricket enthusiasts and experts have hailed Gill as the next big thing in Indian cricket. Together, Kohli and Gill represent a formidable duo in India’s batting lineup.

However, a fake video recently went viral, falsely depicting Kohli criticizing Gill. In the doctored video, Kohli appears to admonish Gill, saying there’s a “big gap between showing promise and becoming a legend.” The video, which has been widely circulated, shows Kohli comparing himself to legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. The comments in the video are believed to be the result of lip-syncing, and the incident has sparked concerns over the misuse of AI technology, with many viewers warning that “AI is dangerous.”

In other news, the latest ICC Test rankings released on Wednesday saw several shifts among top players. Virat Kohli has moved up two places to secure the eighth spot, while Indian captain Rohit Sharma has dropped one place to sixth. Young Indian batter Yashasvi Jaiswal continues his rise, moving up one spot to seventh in the rankings.

Veteran England batter Joe Root maintained his position as the top-ranked Test batter in the world, following England’s successful first Test against Sri Lanka in Manchester. Root’s teammate, Harry Brook, made significant gains, jumping three places to fourth overall, surpassing Pakistan’s Babar Azam, Australia’s Steve Smith, and Rohit Sharma.

Babar Azam experienced a notable drop, falling six places from a shared third to ninth after a rare failure in the first innings of Pakistan’s Test against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan climbed seven spots to enter the top 10, achieving a career-high ranking at a shared 10th place following his century in the same match.

Bangladesh’s Mushfiqur Rahim also reached a career-high rating, moving up seven spots to 17th place.

Among bowlers, seasoned Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin continues to hold the top spot, with pacer Jasprit Bumrah and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja maintaining their third and seventh positions, respectively. England’s Chris Woakes climbed four spots to 16th, while Sri Lanka’s Asitha Fernando made a significant leap of 10 places to 17th. Pakistan’s Naseem Shah (up four places to 33rd) and England’s Gus Atkinson (up four places to 42nd) also achieved career-best ratings after strong recent performances.

In the all-rounder rankings, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin continue to occupy the top two spots, with India’s Axar Patel ranked sixth.

Kangana Ranaut meets BJP chief Nadda days after her remarks on farmers protest

August 30, 2024 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Days after she was reprimanded for her controversial remarks on the farmers’ protest, BJP MP Kangana Ranaut met party president JP Nadda at his residence here on Thursday.

This is the second time that Ranaut has met the BJP president since she stirred a controversy earlier this week with her disparaging remarks on the farmers agitation against the now repealed three farm laws.

The Mandi MP had on Monday posted a clip of her interview with Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar in which she suggested that a “Bangladesh-like situation” could have erupted in India but for the country’s strong leadership. She then alleged that “bodies were hanging and rapes were taking place” during the farmers’ protest against the now-repealed three farm laws.

She also alleged the involvement of China and the US in the “conspiracy”, drawing flak from the opposition parties.

Acting swiftly, the BJP denounced her remarks expressing its disagreement with her views and made it clear that she is neither permitted nor authorised to comment on the party’s policy matters.

“The Bharatiya Janata Party has directed Kangana Ranaut to not make any statement of this kind in future,” the ruling party said in a statement as her controversial remarks threatened to inflame an issue it has tried hard to contain over the last few years.

“The BJP is committed to following the principles of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas’ and social harmony,” the statement added.

Violence against women has increased since Congress came to power: Vijayendra

Bengaluru: BJP state president and MLA BY Vijayendra accused the Congress government of failing to address rising violence against women since coming to power. He expressed his concerns during the inauguration of the state-level workshop of BJP Mahila Morcha at Jagannath Bhawan, BJP State Office, Malleswar.

He asserted that it is the duty of the opposition to fight against policies that harm the people, especially when the ruling government is allegedly ignoring such critical issues.

He highlighted several issues, including the scams involving the Valmiki Corporation and Muda, and claimed that these are indicative of a broader pattern of misconduct under the Congress government.

He also criticised Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Home Minister Parameshwara, and other ministers for their alleged negligence in addressing violence against women.

'Operation Bhediya': Another wolf captured, uncertainty over number on prowl in Bahraich

Bahraich(UP): A forest department team of Uttar Pradesh captured on Thursday a fully grown male wolf under its ‘Operation Bhediya’ launched to capture a pack of wolves on the prowl in Mehsi tehsil of Bahraich district that has so far killed seven people.

The department has so far captured four wolves.

Barabanki Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Akashdeep Badhawan, the in-charge of ‘Operation Bhediya’, that a male wolf was trapped in one of the cages set up near Sisayya Chudamani village in the morning.

The animal caught is a fully grown male, he said.

Six children and a woman have been killed by the animals in the last month and a half in Bahraich with the latest attack taking place in a village on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

Drone cameras and thermal drone mapping techniques are being used by the forest department to catch the wolves. Permission to tranquillise the animals has been granted by the chief wildlife warden, according to an official statement.

As per the forest department, there is uncertainty about the total number of wolves in the area, officials said.

Recommend capping cesses, surcharges at 5% of gross tax revenue: CM to Finance Commission

Recommend capping cesses, surcharges at 5% of gross tax revenue: CM to Finance Commission
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday requested the 16th Finance Commission to recommend capping of cesses and surcharges at five per cent of gross tax revenue, and anything exceeding that should be a part of the divisible pool.

In his address to Chairman of the 16th Finance Commission Arvind Panagariya and its members at a meeting here, he also requested the panel to recommend that vertical devolution should be at least 50 per cent of the divisible pool.

All non-tax revenues of the Centre should be included in the divisible pool of taxes by bringing the necessary Constitutional amendment, Siddaramaiah said.

The Chief Minister said economically advanced States are committed to supporting poorer States, but this should not come at the expense of their own residents or economic efficiency.

The Commission needs to carefully examine the impact of extremely high emphasis given to equity on the incentives of well performing states.

“Moreover, the taxpayers of such states expect their taxes to work for them. This creates public trust. The Finance Commission therefore needs to do a tightrope walk while balancing equity with efficiency and performance”, Siddaramaiah said.

Due to the disproportionate weightage given to equity by the 15th Finance Commission, Karnataka and similarly placed States ended up getting penalised for their good performance, both fiscally and demographically, the Chief Minister said.

Noting that cesses and surcharges are not part of the divisible pool, the Chief Minister said over the years, the Union Government has increased its reliance on them.

This has led to the divisible pool not growing in the same proportion as the Gross Tax Revenue, he said. This has caused substantial loss to all the States.

The loss to Karnataka on account of the non-sharing of cesses and surcharges from the divisible pool is Rs. 53,359 crore during the period 2017-18 to 2024-25, according to him.

The Chief Minister said reduction in central financial transfers is placing severe limitations on the ability of the States to invest in physical and human infrastructure, adding, this issue must be addressed urgently.

“Economically advanced States are committed to supporting poorer States, but this should not come at the expense of their own residents or economic efficiency,” Siddaramaiah said. “A larger proportion of resources generated by the States should be shared with them.”

He requested the Commission to take a bold view and approach, whereby equity considerations are balanced with sufficient reward for efficiency and performance.

Karnataka recommends that 60 per cent of contribution of a state to the divisible pool, for inter se allocation among states, should be given to that state, Siddaramaiah said.

Karnataka, the Chief Minister said, has been central to India’s growth story, adding, it contributes approximately 8.4 per cent to the national GDP with only about five per cent of the population. The State ranks second in total GST contribution to the country.

Despite Karnataka’s substantial contribution of about Rs four lakh crore to the Gross Tax Revenue of the Union every year, the state gets about Rs 45,000 crore in the form of devolution and about Rs. 15,000 crore grant-in-aid.

“This means that for every rupee Karnataka contributes, only 15 paise is returned to the state,” he pointed out.

The Chief Minister said Karnataka requires greater devolution by the Centre as it faces regional imbalances, especially in the Kalyana Karnataka region, and the challenges of urbanisation.

Bengaluru, Siddaramaiah said, needs an investment of Rs. 55,586 crore over the next five years out of which the State requested for a grant of Rs 27,793 crore.

Similarly, for the equitable development of the Kalyana Karnataka region, the State is investing Rs 25,000 crore and requested a matching grant of Rs.25,000 crores over five years from the 16th Finance Commission.

To ensure effective disaster mitigation and timely relief and rehabilitation measures in the highly vulnerable region of Western Ghats, the State requested a grant of Rs.10,000 crore.

According to him, the 15th Finance Commission’s award reduced Karnataka’s share sharply from 4.713 to 3.647. This has led to a loss of Rs. 68,275 crore during the five-year period from 2021-26, he said.

The Finance Commission was conscious of the drastic cut Karnataka received and recommended state specific grants of Rs.11,495 crore, the Chief Minister said, adding, the Government of India, however, has not accepted the recommendation.

“So, Karnataka was deprived of these grants as well. The total of all the losses amount to Rs 79,770 Crores during the 15th Finance Commission period,”, Siddaramaiah said.

Karnataka, he said, has seen a revenue transfer of Rs 35,000-40,000 crore per year to other States, amounting to 1.8 percent of its GSDP, during the 15th Finance Commission period.

“The figure is astounding because the net transfers outside of Karnataka amount to about 50 to 55 percent of the total revenues it generates.”
