Nikhil Kumaraswamy to contest as JDS candidate from Channapatna in by-election

Bengaluru: Nikhil Kumaraswamy has been announced as the Janata Dal (Secular) candidate for the Channapatna Assembly constituency in the upcoming by-election. He will face off against Congress candidate C. P. Yogeshwar in the contest.

Among the three assembly constituencies where by-elections will be held in the state, the BJP has already declared its candidates for the Shiggaon and Sandur constituencies. As part of the NDA alliance, the BJP has left the Channapatna seat to its partner, the JD(S).

Nikhil’s candidacy was confirmed after a coordination meeting between JD(S) and BJP leaders at the residence of B.S. Yediyurappa. Yediyurappa himself announced that Nikhil will contest from Channapatna as the NDA candidate.

More than 70 flights receive bomb threats on Thursday

New Delhi : More than 70 flights of various Indian airlines received bomb threats on Thursday, according to sources.

The sources said around 20 flights each of Air India, Vistara, and IndiGo have got the threats while Akasa Air has got the threats for about 14 flights. In 11 days, nearly 250 flights operated by the Indian carriers have received the bomb threats.

An Akasa Air spokesperson said some of its flights operating on October 24 have received security alerts.

“The Akasa Air Emergency Response teams are monitoring the situation and are in touch with the security and regulatory authorities. We are following all safety and security procedures in coordination with local authorities,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Earlier this week, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said the government plans to take legislative actions to deal with instances of bomb threats to airlines, including placing perpetrators of such threats in the no-fly list.

Former Minister Yogeshwara files nomination for Channapatna Assembly by-poll

Former Minister Yogeshwara files nomination for Channapatna Assembly by-poll

Channapatna : Former Minister C P Yogeshwara, who joined the Congress after quitting BJP, on Thursday filed his nomination as the grand old party’s candidate for the November 13 Assembly by-poll from Channapatna, amid a show of strength.

He was accompanied by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, state Congress President and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and district in-charge Minister Ramalinga Reddy, among other party leaders.

Yogeshwara along with Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar, Reddy, former MP D K Suresh and several other Congress leaders held a massive road show in which a large number of party workers and supporters had gathered.

Yogeshwara on Wednesday quit BJP and joined the Congress, hours before the party fielded him as its candidate from the high profile Channapatna segment.

Channapatna bypoll is necessitated as the seat fell vacant following the election of its representative — JD(S) state President and now Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy — to Lok Sabha from Mandya parliamentary segment.

The by-poll will see a straight contest between Congress and NDA partner JD(S), which is in an alliance with the BJP, in the segment.

Addressing the gathering, Yogeshwara said Siddaramaiah’s personal presence and blessings, and Shivakumar and Suresh’s support and cooperation are a “big strength” for him.

“I have come before you as your candidate to join hands with Shivakumar in his efforts to develop the taluk….I appeal to you to make me win with a record margin to serve you,” he said.

Siddaramaiah said Yogeshwara is a popular leader in Channapatna and he has made efforts for the development of the constituency as a five time MLA and a Minister, and people acknowledge his work in filling up lakes in the taluk.

“Let whoever the JD(S) field as its candidate, let Kumaraswamy himself contest or let him field his son or wife, our candidate Yogeshwara will win hundred per cent. He is a winning horse,” he said.

Charging Kumaraswamy with “not doing anything for the development of Channapatna,” the CM said: “he did not make visits to the constituency. Kumaraswamy is a central minister now, he is not going to any part of the country other than the Mandya segment he represents…”

Shivakumar said, the government is undertaking works to the tune of Rs 500 crore in Channapatna, adding, if the Congress candidate wins here, the segment can witness changes for good. “I request you to give Congress victory with a huge margin.”

Hitting out at Kumaraswamy for quitting as Channapatna MLA and contesting Lok Sabha polls from Mandya, he said: “You (people) should ask him — you were twice MLA from here and also became CM — what have you done, release the list.”

Ahead of joining Congress, Yogeshwara, the actor-turned-politician, had appealed to leaders of the alliance to consider giving him a ticket from the saffron party. He had also said he had plans to contest as an independent if he didn’t get the ticket.

There were plans to field Yogeshwara on a JD(S) ticket, but he was not interested in it, sources said. “Instead, he wanted Kumaraswamy to support him as BJP candidate, which was not acceptable to the latter and his party.”

With this by-poll, “D K Brothers” — Shivakumar and Suresh — are hoping to regain Congress’ ground in the Vokkaliga dominated region, which is their home turf, after the Lok Sabha poll debacle in which the latter lost to BJP-JD(S) joint candidate and Kumaraswamy’s brother-in-law Dr C N Manjunath in Bangalore Rural, under which the Channapatna Assembly seat comes.

According to JD(S) sources, Kumaraswamy did not want to cede the Channapatna seat that he had represented to Yogeshwara or BJP.

Kumaraswamy had won the Channapatna seat in 2018 and 2023. Before that Yogeshwara had represented the seat from BJP and Samajwadi Party. He had earlier also represented the seat both as an independent and from the Congress.

Kumaraswamy’s actor-turned-politician son Nikhil Kumaraswamy’s name has been doing the rounds as JD(S)-BJP alliance’s candidate for Channapatna seat. Nikhil had lost the 2023 Assembly polls from neighbouring Ramanagara.

Kumaraswamy had won Channapatna in the 2023 assembly polls, with 96,592 votes against Yogeshwara (then in BJP) who got 80,677 votes. The Congress candidate had then secured 15,374 votes.

WFI withdraws India from World Ch’ship writes to UWW about govt interference

WFI withdraws India from World Ch'ship, writes to UWW about govt interference
WFI President Sanjay Singh

New Delhi: The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Wednesday withdrew the Indian team from the World Championship, conveying to world governing body, UWW, that the sports ministry is interfering with its autonomy.

The senior World Championship in 12 non-Olympic categories is scheduled to be held in Tirana, Albania from October 28.

The WFI had recently announced selection trials for the U23 and World Championship, which was challenged as contempt of court by the protesting wrestlers who questioned the legality of the selection by the suspended federation.

WFI withdrew the selection trials notice and the court, on October 4, decided not to proceed with the contempt petition.

“Satyawart Kadian, the husband of Sakshi Malik, approached the court recently saying that the WFI should be charged with contempt of court. We won’t be able to send the Indian team for the World Championship now, we have conveyed this to the UWW,” a WFI source told PTI.

“This is all happening because of the ministry’s suspension. There are no grounds to keep the suspension. If the ministry lifts the suspension, all these issues won’t crop up. It’s just pathetic that wrestlers have to suffer because of a few wrestlers and the ministry is not lifting the suspension,” the source added.

The WFI was suspended by the Sports Ministry on December 24 soon after the polls were conducted to elect the new office-bearers.

“Unfortunately, the MYAS (ministry) continues to interfere in the autonomy of the WFI. The MYAS has ordered on 24th December 2023 to the WFI to cease and desist from discharging the day to day administration of WFI and had directed the Indian Olympic Association (NOC of India) to make an Ad-Hoc Committee for governance of WFI,” WFI President Sanjay Singh wrote in his letter to UWW President Nenad Lalovic.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA), though, had disbanded the ad-hoc panel managing the Federation in March this year after UWW lifted the ban on WFI in February.

WFI put on record support from the PT Usha-led Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

“Though the IOA through its President Ms. PT Usha had supported the WFI in the case, it is the MYAS that is the problem creator because of their letter of 24th December 2023 which is being used as a tool to interfere in the administration of the WFI by the wrestlers.”

The WFI began to function but wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and her husband Satyawart filed a plea before the court for appointing an administrator to manage the sports body.

In an interim order, the court said that the IOA’s decision to dissolve the ad-hoc committee was incompatible with the sports ministry’s suspension order.

It said that until the suspension order was recalled, it was necessary for the ad-hoc committee to manage the federation’s affairs. The IOA, though, told the court that it cannot re-constitute the panel.

The WFI has now asked UWW to invoke article 6.3 of UWW Regulations

and take appropriate action and also use Thursday’s communication as a complaint to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Article 6.3 of the UWW Constitution states that, “Affiliated and Associated Members shall govern and administer their activities independently. They

shall preserve their autonomy without influence by any political, religious or economic pressures.”

“Governments and other public authorities shall only be entitled to verify the use of their financial grants by the National Federations.”

In the Olympic year, World Championships are held in four categories in each of the three styles — men’s freestyle, women and greco-roman — instead of all 10.

Indian teams:

Men’s freestyle: Udit (61kg), Manish Goswami (70kg), Parvinder Singh (79kg), Sandeep Mann (92kg).

Greco-Roman: Sanjeev (55kg), Chetan (63kg), Ankit Gulia (72kg), Rohit Dahiya (82kg).

Women: Kirti (55kg), Mansi (59kg), Manisha (65kg), Bipasha (72kg).

BJP’s Nupur Sharma apologises after spreading fake news communalizing Ram Gopal Mishra case

October 22, 2024 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Former BJP leader Nupur Sharma has once again found herself in the spotlight, this time due to a controversy over her remarks concerning the death of Ram Gopal Mishra, a victim of the Bahraich violence. During a recent address, Sharma made a false claim about the manner of Mishra’s death, which led to widespread uproar.

Following the backlash, she has now issued an apology, acknowledging that her statement was based on incorrect information.

Sharma, while speaking at a conference, alleged that Ram Gopal Mishra had suffered horrific brutality, claiming, “35 bullets, pulled-out nails, torn stomach, eyes gouged out.” She questioned whether the country’s laws permit such acts of violence over issues like the removal of a flag. Her words immediately drew attention and stirred communal tensions.

After being informed that the details she shared were incorrect, Sharma apologized for her statement on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). She explained that her claim was based on media reports she had encountered and was unaware of the findings from the postmortem report, which had clarified the actual cause of death. In her apology, she wrote, “I reiterated what I had heard in the media about the late Ram Gopal Mishra ji. I was not aware of the clarification in the postmortem report. I take back my words and apologize.”

In her speech, Sharma had gone on to say, “We are not mosquitoes that we will be crushed… First start thinking about what you can do for your society… My suffering is not bigger than the country, society, and religion, but as long as I am alive, I will keep reminding that if we had raised our voice at that time, then trouble would not have come to my house today.”

At the time of her address, Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla and former Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra were also in attendance, adding further significance to the platform from which she made her remarks.

The controversy surrounding the death of Ram Gopal Mishra has been rife with rumors and false claims. Several reports had suggested that Mishra had been subjected to extreme torture, including having his nails pulled out. However, the Uttar Pradesh Police later debunked these claims, confirming that the cause of Mishra’s death was a gunshot wound and that no such torture had occurred. The UP Police had urged the public not to spread false information, clarifying that the reports of torture were entirely baseless.
