Bengaluru teen Dhinidhi Desinghu set to make waves as India’s Youngest Olympian at Paris 2024

Bengaluru teen Dhinidhi Desinghu set to make waves as India's Youngest Olympian at Paris 2024

Paris: Dhinidhi Desinghu, a 14-year-old budding Indian swimmer, is set to represent India at the upcoming Olympics in Paris, competing in the women’s 200m freestyle. As the youngest member of the Indian contingent, Dhinidhi’s journey is an inspiring story of overcoming her initial fear of water to participating in various international swimming competitions.

“But I didn’t like the water, I didn’t want to get in. I couldn’t get my feet into the pool, I couldn’t get my head inside. It was a struggle,” Dhinidhi told The Indian Express. Her journey began when her parents learned how to swim before her to help her feel at ease.

Although she got comfortable in the water, Dhinidhi initially had difficulties in handling the pressure, her mother Jesitha shared with the Indian Express. However, things changed for the better at a state-level open meeting in Mangaluru. Dhinidhi expressed fear and reluctance to swim. Jesitha motivated her to at least see the pool, after which Dhinidhi agreed to compete. She bagged gold and overcame issues with anxiety before competitions, Jesitha recalled.

Dhinidhi shed light upon her habit of writing a diary where she notes everything about her workout, the timing she strives to achieve, her optimal practice times, and national records, among others. Dhinidhi adds: “I write all of it down so that in case I want to know what I have to aim for, I know how far I am. For me, setting goals is a little better because if I have something to work towards, it makes me realise why I am doing all this.”

Along with maintaining a diary, she also has a blog where she shares her journey and experiences, hoping it might help someone else to overcome issues that she faced as a child.

Dhinidhi trains at Dolphin Aquatics in Bengaluru, headed by Dronacharya awardee Nihar Ameen, and is coached by Madhu Kumar. The youngster qualified for the women’s 200m freestyle on a universality quota and will compete alongside Indian swimming veteran Srihari Natara. She holds the record of being the youngest female swimmer to win seven gold medals at the National Games. Additionally, she holds a national record in the women’s 200m freestyle and has participated in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.

HC asks ED to respond to Satyendar Jain’s plea in money laundering case
former Delhi minister Satyendar Kumar Jain

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday sought the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) response on a plea by former Delhi minister Satyendar Kumar Jain challenging an order taking cognisance of a charge sheet against him and others in a money laundering case.

Justice Neena Bansal Krishna issued notice to the ED on Jain’s petition and asked it to file a status report within 15 days.

The court listed the matter for further hearing on August 22.

Jain has sought setting aside of a trial court’s July 29, 2022 order taking cognisance of ED’s charge sheet in the money laundering case.

He has also challenged the summons issued to him in the case and the subsequent orders remanding him in judicial custody, and sought his release from the jail.

The ED opposed the petition on grounds of maintainability and said while the trial court’s cognisance order was passed in July 2022, the AAP leader has challenged it now.

Besides Satyendar Jain, the ED had also filed the charge sheet against his wife Poonam Jain, Vaibhav Jain, Ankush Jain, Ajit Prasad Jain and Sunil Jain. The charge sheet was also filed against four companies – Akinchan Developers Private Limited, Paryas Infosolutions Private Limited, Manglayatan Developers Private Limited, and JJ Ideal Estate Private Limited.

The ED initiated a money laundering investigation based on a First Information Report (FIR) registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 24, 2017 under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The CBI alleged that Satyendar Jain, while holding the office of a minister in the Delhi government, acquired assets disproportionate to his known sources of income between February 14, 2015 and May 31, 2017.

Shafali hits 81 as India beat Nepal by 82 runs to qualify for semifinals of women’s Asia Cup

July 24, 2024 by Nasheman

Explosive opener Shafali Verma slammed a career-best 48-ball 81 as defending champions India thrashed minnows Nepal by 82 runs in their final group match to confirm their semifinal spot at the Women’s Asia Cup T20 tournament here on Tuesday.

With India shuffling the batting order, Shafali and Dayalan Hemalatha (47) opened the innings and gave India a flying start after stand-in skipper Smriti Mandhana won the toss and opted to bat.

The opening duo smashed its way to 122 in 14 overs to lay the foundation.

Jemimah Rodrigues then hit unbeaten 28 off 15 balls, including three fours in the final over, to take India to a solid 178 for three.

Nepal needed to achieve the target in or under 10 overs to surpass Pakistan on net run rate and qualify for the semifinals but they could only manage 96 for nine in their 20 overs, thanks to some superb bowling from the in-form Indian attack.

Deepti Sharma (3/13) was the most successful bowler for India as she snapped three wickets, while her spin colleague Radha Yadav (2/12) and seamer Arundhati Reddy (2/18), playing in place of a rested Pooja Vastrakar, snapped two each.

Pakistan, thus, became the second team to qualify for the semifinals from group A.

It proved to be a tough chase for Nepal as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals to slip to 52 for 4 in 10.2 overs with seamer Arundhati cleaning up both the openers — Samjhana Khadka (7) and Sita Rana Magar (18).

Renuka Singh (1/15) then dismissed Kabita Kunwar (6), while Radha removed Indu Barma (14).

Deepti then got into the act, getting rid of Rubina Chhetry (15) and Kabita Joshi (0) and then removed Puja Mahato (2) with a direct throw.

Dolly Bhatta (5) became the second victim of Radha, while a caught and bowl effort helped Deepti dismiss Kajal Shrestha (3) to claim her third wicket.

Earlier, Shafali literally toyed with the bowlers, using her flicks to good use as 12 fours and a maximum flew from her blade.

Hemalatha struggled a bit but chugged along with her experienced partner as the Nepalese bowlers toiled in vain.

The openers racked up 50 in the powerplay and continued to make the bowlers pay.

Shafali was particularly harsh on medium pacer Kabita Joshi (1/36), smashing her for five boundaries, while off-spinner Sabnam Rai (0/41) too was sent across the line a couple of times.

The dashing opener smacked spinner Rubina Chhetry (0/14) over deep mid-wicket for her first six in the seventh over before picking up another four with a slog-sweep. She completed her fifty in 26 balls in the eighth over.

Hemalatha, who was finding it difficult to get the middle of the bat, then clobbered Joshi for a straight six as India reached 91 for no loss at the halfway stage.

Nepal had an opportunity to break the stand in the 12th over by left-arm spinner Sita Rana Magar (2/25) but seamer Indu Barma (0/29) spilled a regulation catch off Hemalatha at the boundary line.

The batter, however, was caught by Rubina after a bit of a juggle off the same bowler as India lost their first wicket with the team at 122 in 14 overs.

Hemalatha struck five fours and a six in her 42-ball innings.

Shafali continued to punish the bowlers, slamming two more fours off Barma but Sita Rana finally got rid of the opener with a tossed up delivery as the keeper did the rest.

Joshi then trapped S Sajana (10) but Rodrigues swelled the innings with a little cameo.

Government serious about considering Tulu as Additional Official Language: Priyank Kharge

July 24, 2024 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Karnataka’s Rural Development Minister Priyank Kharge expressed his pride in the rich history and cultural significance of the Tulu language and assured that the government is positively considering recognizing it as an additional official language.

Kharge’s comments came in response to a question posed by Congress MLA Ashok Kumar Rai regarding the status of Tulu as a second additional official language.

During a legislative session, Kharge announced that a blueprint would be developed after conducting a meeting with ministers, legislators, and officials from the Tulu Academy, chaired by Speaker U T Khader. This meeting will follow the conclusion of the current legislative session. Kharge’s remarks were made on behalf of the Kannada and Culture Minister.

Kharge noted that the Mohan Alva committee report, which addresses the official status of Tulu, is currently under review by the Department of Law. He highlighted examples from other states where multiple languages have been recognized as official, such as Urdu alongside Telugu in Andhra Pradesh, and Bihari with Hindi in Bihar. In West Bengal, languages like Bengali, Bihari, and Urdu are used regionally.

Kharge further acknowledged that members of the Tulu community have independently traveled to various states to study the implementation of additional official languages. These findings have been compiled into a report submitted to the government. Kharge assured the assembly that the government would conduct its official study to determine the feasibility of adopting Tulu as an additional official language.

The proposal received support from several members of the house, including Vedavyas Kamath, Harish Poonja, and others, who echoed Ashok Kumar Rai’s sentiments.
