Rupee rises 12 paise to 89.51 against US dollar in early trade

December 24, 2025 by Nasheman

The rupee appreciated 12 paise to 89.51 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday, supported by the RBI’s major liquidity announcement and the weakness of the American currency in the overseas market.

Forex traders said the rupee started the day on a stronger note after the RBI announced sufficient liquidity for the markets to the extent of approx. Rs 3 lakh crore, which will also allow the RBI to keep rupee weakness under control.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 89.56 against the US dollar, then gained some ground and touched 89.51 against the US dollar, registering a gain of 12 paise over its previous close.

In the initial trade, it also touched 89.65 against the American currency. On Tuesday, the rupee settled at 89.63 against the US dollar.

“The RBI was seen actively managing the rupee to prevent excessive volatility and keep USD/INR from breaking 90 levels while it also bought dollars from the spot market to prevent the appreciation.”

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.07 per cent lower at 97.87.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading higher by 0.02 per cent at USD 62.39 per barrel in futures trade.

On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share benchmark index Sensex rose 63.82 points to 85,588.66, while the Nifty was up 32.80 points to 26,209. 95.

Foreign Institutional Investors offloaded equities worth Rs 1,794.80 crore on Tuesday, according to exchange data.

The Reserve Bank of India on Tuesday said it will purchase government securities worth Rs 2 lakh crore and conduct a USD 10 billion buy/sell dollar-rupee swap auction to inject liquidity in the banking system.

The latest announcement comes days after the RBI conducted Rs 1 lakh crore OMO purchase auctions of Government of India securities and USD/INR Buy/Sell Swap auction of USD 5 billion for a tenor of three years.

Kerala MVD warns quick-commerce firms over rash driving by riders

Kerala MVD warns quick-commerce firms over rash driving by riders

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has issued notices to major quick-commerce platforms, including Blinkit, Swiggy, Zepto and Bigbasket, to overhaul their delivery policies, following a surge in traffic violations and reckless driving by their riders.

The notices have been served to the companies’ dark stores and platform operators, directing them to streamline and align their internal policies with road safety regulations within the next 15 days, a statement said here on Wednesday.

The department warned that failure to comply would invite further legal action.

The MVD pointed out that the growing practice of promising ultra-fast deliveries—within seven or 20 minutes—is contributing to unsafe driving behaviour on roads.

Speeding, rash riding and failure to wear safety gear such as helmets were identified as some of the most common violations among delivery riders, it said.

Other road users are often forced to avoid these riders due to the fear of accidents.

The department noted that riders are frequently under pressure to complete orders quickly in order to maximise their income and move on to the next assignment.

In many cases, unrealistic deadlines set by online platforms and aggressive marketing strategies that promise customers rapid delivery timelines are leading to compromised road safety.

Emphasising that public safety cannot be sacrificed for commercial competition, the MVD said online delivery platforms must ensure responsible business practices and strict adherence to traffic laws to prevent accidents and protect lives.

Suryavanshi smashes 84-ball 190 in Vijay Hazare match

Suryavanshi smashes 84-ball 190 in Vijay Hazare match

Ranchi (PTI): Teen sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi went berserk en route to a blistering 84-ball 190, including hitting 15 sixes, while reaching the three-figure mark in just 36 balls for Bihar in their Vijay Hazare Plate Group match against Arunachal Pradesh here on Wednesday.

With his sustained, brutal onslaught against an attack that was pedestrian in terms of quality, the 14-year-old opener lit up what would otherwise have been a normal opening day of the 50-over domestic tournament.

Suryavanshi’s ton is the second-fastest hundred by an Indian in List A cricket. The Indian record is held by Punjab’s Anmolpreet Singh, who struck a 35-ball hundred against the same opposition in 2024.

Besides his 15 maximums, Suryavanshi also smashed 16 fours during his stay in the middle, only three days after his failure in the final of the U19 Asia Cup against Pakistan in the UAE.

The list of the quickest hundred in this form of the game is topped by Jake Fraser-McGurk (29 balls) for South Australia against Tasmania in the 2023-24 season and the great AB de Villiers (31 balls) for South Africa against West Indies in Johannesburg.

Suryavanshi, though, now holds the record for the youngest List A centurion.

Bihar chose to bat after winning to toss.

Six-year-old Thane girl dies month after dog bite

December 24, 2025 by Nasheman

Thane: A six-year-old girl from Maharashtra’s Thane died over a month after being bitten by a street dog, a civic official said on Wednesday.

Her family members said she received timely treatment, including anti-rabies shots, and even celebrated her birthday before her condition suddenly worsened.

Nisha Shinde was playing outside her home in the Diva area on November 17, when a community dog bit the child on her shoulder and cheek, he said.

The girl was initially taken to a local doctor and subsequently referred to the Shastrinagar Hospital, which is run by the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC).

According to the child’s mother Sushma Shinde, the girl underwent a standard anti-rabies protocol. “The child received all mandatory injections on schedule,” she said.

Nisha appeared to be in good health following the initial treatment, even celebrating her birthday on December 3, her mother said.

The child developed high-grade fever and headache on December 16, a day after receiving the final dose of the anti-rabies vaccine. There were sudden behavioural changes, including banging her head against the bed and scratching those nearby, she claimed.

She was rushed back to the KDMC-run hospital the next day and later shifted to a civic hospital in Mumbai for advanced care, but could not be saved, the official said.

KDMC medical health officer Dr Deepa Shukla maintained that the prescribed medical protocols were strictly followed during the girl’s treatment.

Kolkata Police to deploy around 2,000 police personnel for Christmas New Year celebrations

December 24, 2025 by Nasheman

Kolkata: Kolkata Police has put in place elaborate security arrangements across the city ahead of Christmas and New Year celebrations, with special emphasis on Park Street and adjoining areas that are expected to witness heavy footfall, a senior officer said on Wednesday.

Around 2,000 police personnel will be deployed during the festive period, including 10 deputy commissioners, 25 assistant commissioners, 27 inspectors and 250 sub-inspectors, he said.

Additional forces will be stationed in the Park Street-Dharmatala belt to ensure effective crowd control and prevent any untoward incidents, the IPS officer said.

He said traffic regulations will be enforced depending on crowd density, with restrictions likely to be imposed in the Park Street area from 4 pm onwards on December 25, 26 and 31.

Security has also been tightened at all major entry points to the city, with intensified naka checking and police patrolling in areas such as Dhola Bridge, Shyambazar, the Howrah-Burrabazar connector, Diamond Harbour Road, Ekbalpur and around Red Road, he said.

“Surveillance has been stepped up at shopping malls, cinema halls, Metro and railway stations, nightclubs and bars,” he added.

“Checks are being carried out at strategic locations to prevent any security breach. We are also keeping a close watch on sensitive and high-footfall areas,” another senior officer said.

As part of the security plan, 15 watchtowers have been set up at key locations across the city, including five in Park Street area alone.

Quick Response Teams (QRTs) have been kept on standby to deal with emergencies, he said.

Women officers from Kolkata Police’s ‘Winners’ team will be deployed, and plainclothes personnel will be present in crowded areas.

“Any emergency will be dealt with swiftly. Our teams are fully prepared,” he added.

Citizens have been advised to contact Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar control room or dial 100 in case of any emergency.
