Life at Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Bengaluru

October 27, 2015 by Nasheman

SIBM_Bengaluru Campus

Bengaluru: Amidst the high walls and cocooned shell of the three and a half acre campus of Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Bengaluru, they say what happens here; indeed does stay in the campus.

So let’s take a journey into the lives of the 341 students who strive each moment to meet deadlines, complete tasks and assignments, and try to accomplish higher standards. In the process, we are left to wonder if 24 hours is actually enough for an MBA student? But, what sets us apart is the level of student involvement in the day-to day functioning of the college. Being a student driven college primarily, we are involved in each and every activity, from placements to making sure of the quality of food available; from organizing the festivities to being the face of SIBM-B in the mass media. It’s all about the students. With 11 committees and 12 clubs; SIBM-B aims to achieve excellence in all avenues. The institute aims to inculcate in each individual a sense of responsibility, independence skill development and healthy competition. With the constant floods of tests, assignments and events and live projects, each of us eventually learn how to survive on average four hours of sleep.

The state-of-the-art faculty at SIBM-B is a cross section of both members from the industry as well as academia. Each faculty member is a sea of knowledge, and sometimes is not possible to impart it all during lectures. Hence, they take up individual doubts very patiently in class and any time offline too. The various clubs focus on each of the functional areas of specializations like HR, Finance, Marketing and Operations. The main aim of the clubs is to provide knowledge beyond the course books to match up with current industry requirements. All this, again managed by the students themselves.

A holistic environment congenial for adequate growth opportunities is provided at each level. There is a healthy level of student-teacher interaction through mentorships too, where each student is assigned a mentor whom they can fall back to at all times. Analyzing Harvard Business Review case studies, various other case discussions and making PowerPoint presentations is what each of us knows like the back of our hands by now.

The mess has variety of foods available with the good part being that there is no limit on the amount of intake. The college also has an amphitheater where street plays, musical concerts, and movie projections are held from time to time to give students a break. If that was not enough, there is a 24 hours-open reading room, a library, a well-equipped gymnasium, a basketball court, an indoor badminton court and a volleyball court. In short, there are adequate recreational provisions made, which each of us manage to make use of.

The day starts at 9 am and ends by 6:15 pm for most of us. After which, one can straight away see herds of students flocking to the reading room or the library; some to the gym; some to the cafeteria; and some to flex their muscles by playing a sport.

SIBM-B is seldom asleep. Be it at 2 am, one will always either find groups of students studying at one end or a group singing at another. From chit-chatting at one end to making assignments at another, the balance seems to be just right.

To survive in the rat-race that the world is now, one not only needs to be hard working but also needs to develop and hone other key skills. Keeping this in mind, the curriculum is very challenging, intense and beneficial. They say, MBA is all about developing people skills, network, professional knowledge and rigorous mindset. And no better place could offer this than SIBM-B. Focusing on all the key aspects simultaneously as well as making each moment worth a memory is what we all are going to take from our two years here.

BJP govt is Congress plus a cow, never seen a weaker PMO: Arun Shourie

October 27, 2015 by Nasheman

arun shourie

New Delhi: In a sharp attack on the Narendra Modi government, BJP leader Arun Shourie on Monday contended that it believes that managing economy means “managing the headlines” and that people had started recalling the days of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

“Doctor Singh (Manmohan Singh) ko log yaad karne lag gaye hain (People have started recalling the days of Manmohan Singh). The way to characterise policies of the government is — Congress plus a cow. Policies are the same,” Mr. Shourie said at book launch function.

The function to launch Turn of The Tortoise, a book written by former Business Standard Editor-in-Chief T. N. Ninan, was attended by Manmohan Singh, Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subranamian and former Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran.

Pointing out differences between the present and the previous governments, Mr. Shourie said: “There is clearer belief (in the present dispensation) that managing economy means managing the headlines and this is not really going to work.”

Mr. Shourie, who was a Minister in the Vajpayee government, said: “I feel there was never a weaker a PMO as now… There has never been as great a centralisation of functions, not power, of functions in PMO as now. …If fellows don’t have domain expertise, that Brajesh Mishra had, L.K. Jha had, all these principal secretaries had, then things get stuck.”

Mr. Shourie said, “If you see impediments that were there in tax administration, virtually no change… Banking reform has been delayed by year and a half for no reason. So therefore this tortoise is a very generous metaphor. Ye to so hi jata hai (this tortoise goes to sleep).”

‘Industrialists afraid’

He claimed that industrialists are afraid of speaking against the government. “The industrialists who meet the Prime Minister don’t speak the whole truth. After meeting PM, they say ‘please do something’ And in front of the media they give the government 9 out of 10.”

Bengaluru: Cricketer Amit Mishra has been arrested and later released on bail in Bengaluru today in a sexual assault case.

He was arrested after a three-hour long interrogation session by Bengaluru police.

The victim, who is from Bengaluru and claims to be a Bollywood producer, approached the Ashok Nagar police on September 25 and lodged a complaint against Mishra.

The complaint stated that she had by mistake entered Mishra’s room in a hotel on Residency Road.

The cricketer also came into the room, and on finding her there, he started verbally abusing her.

They were engaged in a heated argument and Mishra reportedly assaulted her.

A few employees of the hotel intervened and pacified Mishra.

Hindu Sena men storm into Kerala House for serving beef

October 27, 2015 by Nasheman

Kerala House

New Delhi: Activists from a right wing group created a ruckus at Kerala House near Jantar Mantar on Monday, alleging that the canteen there was serving cow meat.

K.G. Joseph, a protocol officer at the State’s guest house, however, said that the word beef in the menu referred to buffalo meat, consuming which was legal in the Capital.

Three members of Hindu Sena, who barged into the house complex after being instigated by a Vishwa Hindu Parishad activist from Kerala, also sought police intervention in the matter.

They even threatened to resort to violence if the “sale of cow meat” was not stopped there.

Hindu Sena was recently in the news for attacking an independent MLA from J&K, Engineer Rashid, and smearing his face with black for hosting a beef party in the valley.

New Delhi: Fugitive Chhota Rajan, wanted over a series of murders in India, has been arrested in Indonesia after decades on the run, police said on Monday.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh and CBI confirmed the arrest of underworld don Chhota Rajan in Indonesia. “Bali Police arrested Chhota Rajan yesterday at CBI’s request made through Interpol,” said CBI Director Anil Sinha.

The CBI in its official statement said, “At the request of CBI (Interpol) India, the Bali police has arrested an Indian national, Mohan Kumar on 25 October 2015. Mohan Kumar alias Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje alias Chhota Rajan is a fugitive and CBI has been pursuing the matter with Australian authorities. This is a good and close cooperation between India, Australia and Indonesia. We thank Indonesia and Australia for their prompt action at our request. Further action will be taken as required under the law.”

Acting on a tip-off from Australian police, Indonesian authorities detained Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, alias ‘Chhota Rajan’ on Sunday as he arrived in the popular resort island of Bali from Sydney, Bali police spokesman Heri Wiyanto told AFP.

The 55-year-old Nikalje, an alleged crime boss in India, had been on the run for two decades, Wiyanto said, with Interpol flagging him as a wanted man back in 1995.

“We received information from police in Canberra yesterday (Sunday) about the red notice for a murderer,” he said.

“We arrested the man at the airport yesterday. What we know is that this man was suspected to have carried out 15 to 20 murders in India.”

Bali police were coordinating with Interpol and Indian authorities, Wiyanto said, adding it was likely Nikalje would be deported to India.

A spokesperson for Australian Federal Police said Interpol in Canberra had alerted Indonesian authorities “who apprehended Nikalje at the request of Indian authorities”.

The federal police confirmed last month that Nikalje was living in Australia under another identity and had been in discussions with Indian authorities, the spokesperson said, but would not provide further details.

Interpol’s website states that Nikalje was born in Mumbai and was wanted for multiple charges including murder and possession and use of illegal firearms.

Siddaramaiah rushes to Delhi, will apprise Sonia of crisis in Karnataka

October 26, 2015 by Nasheman

Siddaramaiah

New Delhi: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has rushed to New Delhi to consult the Congress party High Command on Cabinet reshuffle in an effort to quell rebellion in the state unit.

Siddaramaiah is expected to meet Congress party President Sonia Gandhi on Monday evening to discuss the issue. There are three vacancies in the Council of Ministers and Siddaramaiah is expected to drop three from his Cabinet. In all, Siddaramaiah plans to induct 6 ministers and undertake a reshuffle, as his government completed two years in Karnataka.

Internal differences have come to the fore in Karnataka Congress after several legislators complained to party Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Siddaramaiah’s working style. Since then, former Union minister SM Krishna met Sonia Gandhi twice to apprise her of the situation in Karnataka. Consequently, she summoned Siddaramaiah to New Delhi for a possible reshuffle to end the rebellion.

Ex-comedian Jimmy Morales claims victory in Guatemala polls

October 26, 2015 by Nasheman

Jimmy Morales takes commanding lead over rival, a former first lady, as he is on course to become the next president.

Jimmy Morales

by Al Jazeera

Guatemalan former comedian Jimmy Morales has claimed victory in presidential election, as partial results showed him taking a commanding lead over his rival, the former first lady Sandra Torres.

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal reported on Sunday that with nearly 70 percent of polling stations reporting, Morales had about 72 percent of the votes, compared with 28 percent for Torres, according to Associated Press.

“With this election you have made me president, I received a mandate and that mandate is to fight the corruption that has consumed us,” Morales told AFP new agency.

The runoff was held a month and a half after President Otto Perez Molina resigned and was jailed in connection with a corruption scandal.

Morales and Torres were the top two vote-getters in the first round September 6, when presumed front-runner Manuel Baldizon finished a surprising third – a result considered to be a rejection of Guatemala’s political establishment in the wake of the corruption scandal.

His surge has capped a tumultuous campaign rocked by president Otto Perez’s resignation and arrest on corruption charges on September 3, three days before the first round of voting.

An estimated 7.5 million people were eligible to vote in the second round.

The headquarters of Morales’ National Convergence Front (FCN) party erupted in a celebration with live music and dozens of early revelers, Reuters reported.

“We are tired of the same faces. Jimmy Morales doesn’t really convince me, I was not even going to vote. But he is the only option,” Ana Fuentes, 36, a street seller, told Reuters.

Morales and Torres jockeyed to position themselves as the anti-corruption candidate.

Both promised to keep Attorney General Thelma Aldana, a key figure in the investigation, and the UN commission in place. Morales vowed to strengthen controls and transparency, while Torres said she would ask the UN body for help conducting a government-wide audit.

Perez, who is in jail awaiting trial, is accused of masterminding a corrupt network of politicians and customs officials that allowed businesses to pay bribes to get illegal discounts on import duties.

Prosecutors and UN investigators say the network collected $3.8m in bribes between May 2014 and April 2015 – including $800,000 each to Perez and jailed ex-vice president Roxana Baldetti.

The scandal, the worst in a string of recent corruption cases, has created an unprecedented climate of outrage in Guatemala, an impoverished Central American country torn by gang violence and still recovering from a 36-year civil war that ended in 1996.

Thousands of protesters, including from the country’s large and historically marginalized indigenous population, took to the streets in the weeks leading up to the elections.

European leaders commit to more shelter for refugees

October 26, 2015 by Nasheman

EU and Balkan leaders agree 17-point plan that includes about 100,000 more places for refugees as winter looms.

eu

by Al Jazeera

European Union and Balkan leaders have agreed a 17-point plan to cooperate on managing arrival of refugees through the Balkan peninsula, the European Commission has said.

Among measures agreed at the meeting in Brussels on Sunday evening were that 100,000 places in reception centres should be made available along the route from Greece toward Germany. The UN refugee agency would help establish them.

Some 50,000 places will be created in Greece and another 50,000 on the route through Balkans countries such as Macedonia and Serbia, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said after the mini-summit of 11 nations.

“Refugees need to be treated in a humane manner along the length of the Western Balkans route to avoid a humanitarian tragedy in Europe,” Juncker said.

The agreement comes in the wake of differences among member nations on how to tackle the continent’s greatest refugee crisis since World War II.

“This is one of the greatest litmus tests that Europe has ever faced,” said German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Border operations

They also agreed to expand border operations and make full use of biometric data like fingerprints as they register and screen refugees, before deciding whether to grant them asylum or send them home.

“We have made very clear that the policy of simply waving people through must be stopped,” EU Commission president told reporters, referring to agreements to cooperate and avoid unilateral national measures that have contributed to chaos throughout the region.

The meeting also agreed to deploy 400 police officers to Slovenia within a week to help the country cope with its overwhelming arrival of refugees. Earlier, Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar said that his country was not receiving enough help from its EU partners.

Nearly 250,000 people have passed through the Balkans since mid-September.

Croatia said 11,500 people entered its territory on Saturday, the highest tally in a single day since Hungary put up a fence and refugees started moving sideways into Croatia a month ago.
