Independent MLA Sharath Bachegowda extends support to Congress

February 26, 2021 by Nasheman

Party hopes his support will help it reclaim lost clout in Chikkaballapur Lok Sabha segment; Former MLA Prasanna Kumar too returns to fold

BENGALURU:  It was a terrific Thursday for the Congress in Karnataka with two popular leaders adding to its strength. Independent MLA from Hoskote Sharath Bachegowda on Thursday officially extended outside support to the Congress Legislature Party, while former MLA B Prasanna Kumar made a comeback to the party fold.Sharath, a former BJP youth leader and son of BJP Lok Sabha MP from Chikkaballapur B N Bachegowda, officially associated himself with the Congress Legislature Party in the presence of KPCC President D K Shivakumar and CLP chief Siddaramaiah. While he, as an independent MLA, cannot join the party, many of his supporters, Sharath said, have shown an inclination towards joining the Congress.

“Hoskote is not an island. I need support in raising issues concerning the public and I find that Congress Legislature Party shares my concerns whether it is the issue of fuel and LPG price hike or job losses etc. I have extended my support to the Congress and they will back me in my agitations for the people,” Sharath told TNIE. When asked if his next move was to formally join the Congress at the end of his tenure as an independent MLA, he said it was undecided.

With Sharath’s association with the party, the Congress hopes to reclaim its erstwhile clout in the Chikkaballapur LS seat. “When Sharath quit the BJP, many of his supporters followed suit. His support to the Congress will help us build a stronger cadre base in regions of Bengaluru rural district,” said Ramalinga Reddy, Working President, KPCC.

Sharath’s decision to walk out of the BJP and contest the 2019 Hoskote bypoll as an independent had invited much flak for his father and BJP MP B N Bachegowda. “Since I am an MLA and my father is an MP there is no clash of interest between us. When I decided to walk out of the party, 90 per cent of our cadres supported me,” Sharath said insisting that he was not keen on jumping to national politics just yet.

At a time when Congress legislator from Pulakeshi Nagar Akhanda Srinivasa Murthy has been openly expressing disappointment with the party leadership over DJ Halli riots, Congress welcomed his rival B Prasanna Kumar back into the party fold — a move that is being viewed as ‘Plan B’.

Prasanna, who quit the Congress and joined the JDS after Murthy joined the party from JDS, had lost to the latter in the same constituency. “He is our own leader. He had lost his path for a bit but has now come back on the right track,” said Shivakumar, as he welcomed Prasanna back into the party. Prasanna’s entry into the Congress comes at a time the BJP has been publicly supporting Murthy whose house was vandalised by a mob during the August 2020 violence.

Travel from Kerala not stopped, only test report mandatory: K Sudhakar

February 24, 2021 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: Dismissing allegations that Karnataka has prohibited people coming from Kerala, Health and Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar said that the state has not prohibited inter-state travel, but has only made it mandatory to produce RT-PCR negative certificate at the time of entry to the state.“Karnataka has not prohibited inter-state travel between Karnataka and Kerala. However, as a precautionary measure, guidelines have been issued that travellers entering Karnataka from Kerala must mandatorily possess a negative RT-PCR test report not older than 72 hours,” Sudhakar tweeted.

According to health department officials, the clarification came after the Wayanad district panchayat reportedly wrote to Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to lift the restrictions that have also impacted the movement of goods between the two states. While northern Kerala depends on Karnataka for vegetables, farm labourers from bordering areas of Karnataka travel regularly to Kerala’s plantations in Wayanad.

On Monday, tension prevailed across Kasargod, Kannur and Wayanad borders where people from Kerala blocked incoming traffic from Karnataka via the Bavali border check-point in Wayanad district. It was alleged that heaps of mud were dumped across inter-state roads to stop traffic from Kerala.

“Even ambulances carrying non-Covid patients from Kasargod to Dakshina Kannada were not given entry. We have faced this situation last year and know how difficult it is,” said Manoj Nair, an ambulance driver at a private hospital from Kasargod. However, a senior officer said, “We have to stop everyone (travelling across the border) for RT-PCR certificate. This is being done to ensure that cases don’t surge in Karnataka. It is a precautionary measure.”

Karnataka CM tasks two ministers with Panchamasali row firefight

February 22, 2021 by Nasheman

BENGALURU : Under attack from his own community’s sect, even as his political rivals make hay, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa is all set to deploy his ministers and MLAs from the Panchamasali Lingayat grouping to firefight his latest conundrum. The Panchamasali Lingayats, who are demanding reservation under 2A category, held a massive rally in Bengaluru on Sunday.

Unable to respond directly, lest it fans the embers, leading to a full revolt and damaging his image as the undisputed mass leader of the Lingayats, Yediyurappa is looking to entrust the task of tackling the precarious situation to Mines and Geology Minister Murugesh Nirani and Small Scale Industries and Information Minister C C Patil.

After the two ministers’ failed attempt to woo thousands of Panchamasali Lingayats, who had gathered in Bengaluru on Sunday demanding reservation, the duo, flanked by BJP legislators from the community, will have a solidarity show with the CM through a press conference on Monday.

The ministers’ attempts to dissuade the community from continuing the protest ended in booing from the crowds, ultimatums from seers who are leading the protests and culminated in the duo leaving in a huff, disappointed. “The CM wants the overall welfare of the community. He has, in fact, already written to the Backward Classes Commission to conduct a study and submit a report. My request to the community members is to have patience and trust the government.

We are making all efforts to bring the Panchamasali community under the 2A category,” Murugesh Nirani told TNIE. BJP sources said the general perception within the party was that politics is being played out to embarrass the CM and the BJP governments at the State and Centre. The ministers and the legislators are set to use back-channel talks with the community seers and leaders to compel them to put off the agitation for some time while also defending the government publicly.

In both attempts, the CM is keen on steering clear of a direct dialogue. Sources close to CM suggested he is more keen on including the Veerashaiva-Lingayats as a whole in the Centre’s OBC list. “There was no need for a religious head, claiming to be fighting for the community’s reservation, to praise Congress’ Vinay Kulkarni who is accused of murdering a BJP leader, on stage. Yatnal, who has been abusing the CM, was allowed to use the stage to launch vulgar attacks. People like Kashappanavar are fuelling the stir with the sole purpose of maligning BJP and CM’s image,” alleged a BJP legislator from the community.
