Former Karnataka Minister Roshan Baig gets bail in IMA case

Bengaluru: A special CBI court here on Saturday granted bail to former Karnataka Minister Roshan Baig in the multi-crore I Monetary Advisory (IMA) investment scam.

CBI arrested Baig on November 22 and had conducted raids at his residence the very next day.

The disqualified Congress MLA from Shivajinagar in the city, after the arrest, was produced before the court, which remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days.

Baig has been asked by the court to cooperate with the investigation and report before CBI officials on the second and fourth Monday of every month, official sources said.

He also has been asked to surrender his passport, inform the court if he changes address, and not to threaten witnesses, they said.

Baig’s advocate, while citing his health condition, informed the court that his client has cooperated with the investigation and all the accused in the case have been granted bail, barring the MD and CEO of the IMA Group of companies.

The multi-crore ponzi scheme run by Karnataka-based IMA and its group entities allegedly duped over a lakh of people to the tune of Rs 4,000 crore promising higher returns.

The scam came to light in June last year when the IMA operator Mohammed Mansoor Khan fled the country accusing Baig and some government officers of cheating him.

Khan had alleged that Baig had taken about Rs 400 crore from him, which the latter had rejected outright.

Khan came to India after much persuasion by the police and surrendered.

The then Congress and JD(S) coalition government had formed a special investigation team to probe the matter.

However, the BJP government after coming to power handed over the case to the CBI.

The CBI had named an IAS officer, two IPS officers, a KAS officer, and a corporator among the accused in the case.

The state government gave permission to the Central agency to prosecute them.

Karnataka HC directs govt to hold Bengaluru municipal elections at the earliest

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Friday ordered the State government to hold the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike elections at the earliest for 198 wards and publish the final notification of reservation of wards within a month.

The Division Bench of Chief Justice of the High Court Abhay Shreeniwas Oka and Justice S Vishwajith Shetty passed the order hearing public interest litigation filed by the former corporators M Shivaraju of Shankar Math Ward and Abdul Wajid and the Karnataka State Election Commission.

The bench directed the government to conduct the municipal elections in Bengaluru at the earliest.

“We direct the State Election Commission to hold election of BBMP as expeditiously as possible by publishing the election program within a maximum period of six weeks from the date on which final reservation notification is published,” the bench said in its order.

It added further that the elections should be held for 198 wards as per the notification of delimitation of wards published on June 23, 2020.

The BBMP elections were supposed to take place before September 10 when the term of the elected body of the municipal corporation came to an end.

The government put the election on hold and appointed senior bureaucrat Gaurav Gupta as an administrator of the BBMP in order to increase the number of wards to 243.

The Karnataka government had even issued a notification on October 14 to increase the number of wards in BBMP.

The court directed the government to hold the elections to the 198 wards at the earliest in view of the fact that the delimitation commission which was recently constituted has not yet submitted its recommendations for dividing the area of the BBMP into 243 wards. The court noted that the delimitation process will take considerable time.

Karnataka Bandh: Traffic jam in CBD area, Vatal Nagaraj calls Jail Bharo agitation against CM

December 5, 2020 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: Traffic was thrown out of gear around Mourya Circle, Race Course Road, Corporations circle and Mekhri Circle on Saturday following Karnataka Bandh called by Pro-Kannada organisations. More than 5000 activists were taken into preventive custody by the city police.

Shops and commercial establishments were closed at Gandhinagar,  Chickpet and Avenue road and the protesters blocked the road at Town Hall and Mysuru Bank Circle. The group from Karnataka Rakshana Vedike headed by Narayanagowda tried to protest in front of CM’s house on Kumarakrupa road and he was detained by the police. Narayanagowda began the rally from Gandinagar via Shivananda Circle. When they were heading CM house Krishna police bundled them in a BMTC bus.

The protesters in KR Puram allegedly pelted stones at a BMTC  bus and the situation was tense for a while. Meanwhile, KSRTC and BMTC bus services were seen as usual around Majestic.

Speaking to the media, Varal Nagaraj said more than 20,000 Kannada activists have been taken to preventive custody when they were coming to the city to participate in the Bandh and police who came in mufti forced them to return their house and most of them were detained at early morning. The Chief Minister is behind all this and he is using the police force to destroy the protest.  He is also an agent of other states and has no concern about Kannada and he is a betrayer.

“We never stop protesting until CM has to give his resignation and we have called a meeting on Wednesday to campaign Jail bharo agitation against the CM’s decision of Maratha Development Authority (MDA)”, Nagaraj added.

Karnataka Minister To Travel To UP, Gujarat To Study Anti-Cow Slaughter Law

December 2, 2020 by Nasheman

The Minister has already announced that the anti-cow slaughter bill will be introduced during the winter session of the state legislature starting from December 7.

Prabhu Chavan has reiterated that anti-cow slaughter bill will be tabled in the winter session

Karnataka Animal Husbandry Minister Prabhu Chavan will be travelling to Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat to study and gather information on implementation of the anti-cow slaughter laws there, his office said on Tuesday.

The Minister has already announced that the anti-cow slaughter bill will be introduced during the winter session of the state legislature starting from December 7.

“Aimed at further strengthening the proposed anti-cow slaughter bill in the state, officials of the department under the leadership of Minister Prabhu Chavan will be visiting Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat from December 2 to 4,” the Minister’s office said in a statement.

Mr Chavan in the statement has reiterated that the anti-cow slaughter bill will be tabled in the winter session and all the necessary preparations have been made for it.

Noting that anti-cow slaughter Acts have been implemented in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, it said the Minister and officials will be gathering information on its implementation and management.

They will also visit “gaushalas” (cow shelters) and try to know about the measures taken by these states for the protection of cows.

Mr Chavan had recently said that if the law is enacted, along with prohibition on slaughter, sale and use of beef and also illegal transportation of animals for slaughtering will be stopped.

The BJP in its manifesto ahead of the 2018 assembly election had promised prohibition of cow slaughter.

Despite resistance from opposition, the then BJP government led by BS Yediyurappa in 2010 had passed the controversial Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill that proposed to replace the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act, 1964.

The bill had widened the definition of “cattle” and imposed a blanket ban on cattle slaughter, coupled with stringent penalty clauses for violation.
