BJP issues show cause notice to MLAs ST Somashekar Shivaram Hebbar over RS election cross-voting

March 4, 2024 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Chief Whip of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday issued a show cause notice to Yeshwantpur MLA ST Somashekar in the backdrop of his cross-voting and Yellapur MLA Shivaram Hebbar for abstaining from voting during the recently concluded Rajya Sabha elections in Karnataka.

Earlier in the day, opposition chief whip, Doddana Gowda Patil issued separate show cause notices to both MLA’s seeking an answer by May 5.

The BJP has accused ST Somashekar of violating the party’s conduct by allegedly casting cross votes in the Rajya Sabha elections held on February 26. It is claimed that despite being instructed to vote for the BJP candidate, Narayanasa Bhanda, Somashekar voted for the Congress candidate.

Shivram Hebbar of Yellapur Constituency was absent from voting, citing illness. He explained that he did not participate in the vote due to poor health. However, the BJP disputes this explanation and alleges that Hebbar visited the Hilton Resort, where Congress MLAs were staying, in a car belonging to Congress MLA Ranganath on the day before the polls.

Allegations of pro-Pakistan slogan: CM Siddaramaiah says strict action if found true

February 29, 2024 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on Wednesday serious action would be taken against those who allegedly raised ‘Pakistan zindabad’ slogan inside the ‘Vidhana Soudha’ if the investigation found the charge to be true.

When Congress workers were celebrating Syed Naseer Hussain’s victory in the Rajya Sabha elections here on Tuesday night, it is alleged, some people shouted ‘Pakistan zindabad’ slogan. The BJP lodged a police complaint on the issue, and staged protests in several parts of the State, including Belagavi, Chitradurga and Mandya, on Wednesday, condemning the Congress government.

Reacting to the allegation, Siddaramaiah said there is no question of sparing anyone.

“It is not only allegation by BJP, it is also allegation by media”, he said referring to the charge that “Pakistan zindabad” slogan was heard after Hussain was declared winner at “Vidhana Soudha”.

“If the FSL (Forensic Science Laboratory) report proves that the slogan raised in favour of Pakistan is true, serious action will be taken in this regard. There is no question of protecting those who raised slogans in favour of Pakistan,” the Chief Minister told reporters.

“We have sent the voice report to the FSL. When the report comes, if it’s true that somebody has made a slogan that ‘Pakistan zindabad’ such a person will be punished seriously”, Siddaramaiah said. “If somebody has raised such a slogan, there is no question of sparing them. If it is true we will take strict action, serious action.”

On the alleged incident taking place in Vidhana Soudha, the seat of state legislature and secretariat, he said: “What difference will it make to those who want to raise slogans?”

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi warned that a statewide agitation will be launched if the accused are not arrested.

“Instead of condemning the incident, Naseer Hussain is trying to mislead people, saying that somebody is spreading false information, which is more dangerous,” Joshi told reporters in Hubballi in north Karnataka.

The Minister sought to know the “take” of the Congress President M Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on this incident “because Hussain is the ‘Shishya’ of Kharge”.

“I ask the state Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara to take a serious note of it, otherwise the BJP will launch a statewide agitation,” Joshi said.

DKShi, Gundu Rao slam BJP for lack of patience to wait till investigation reveals truth about slogan

February 29, 2024 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao have criticized the members of the Bharatiya Janata Party for raising a ruckus over the slogan called out by supporters of Congress leader Naseer Hussain on his victory in the Rajya Sabha elections on Tuesday before the investigation reports were submitted.

Shivakumar, when asked to comment on the matter, told reporters that legal action would be taken by the government if a ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ slogan was shouted on the said occasion, adding, “The BJP members, in desperation after losing the Rajya Sabha election on Tuesday, have tweaked the slogan only to gain popularity among the voters.”

The Deputy CM also clarified, “The government, on its part, has ordered the investigation of the incident. Once the investigation reports are submitted to us, the police will be told to take legal action against the guilty.”

The Health Minister, commenting on his personal ‘X’ account on Wednesday, has sharply asked why the BJP was impatient in the matter. “We are yet to receive the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report on the incident of sloganeering ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ in the Vidhana Soudha but the BJP has already concluded that the crime had been committed,” he has said.

Dinesh Gundu Rao clarified that the matter was still under investigation as there is uncertainty regarding the slogan called. “If it was truly a pro-Pakistan slogan, however, the law will not spare such traitors. We are getting the matter investigated, to find if the slogan was ‘Naseer Saab Zindabad’ or ‘Pakistan Zindabad’, and will learn the truth only after getting the FSL report,” the minister explained, demanding the BJP to wait with patience till then.

Kiran Navgire’s bruising fifty help UP Warriorz score 7-wicket win over MI

February 29, 2024 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Kiran Navgire and Alyssa Healy unleashed a remarkable assault on Mumbai Indians bowlers to power UP Warriorz to a seven-wicket win in their Women’s Premier League match here on Wednesday.

Navigre (57, 31b, 6×4, 4×6) and Healy (33, 29 balls) added 94 runs for the opening wicket stand in just 9.1 overs as the Warriorz eased past the 162-run target in 16.4 overs to hand the defending champions their first defeat of the season.

Mumbai batting suffered in the absence of skipper and in-form batter Harmanpreet Kaur, who is nursing a niggle, as a laboured 55 off 47 balls from Hayley Matthews guided them to 161 for six.

It was a competitive total but the Mumbai bowlers would not have suspected a carnage like the one Navigre and Healy unloaded on them.

Navigre, who is the only Indian women batter to score a 150-plus score in senior T20s, fully exploited her promotion as opener, as Mumbai also suffered from the injury-enforced absence of lead pacer Shabnim Ismail.

Healy gave a sound start to UP’s chase with two successive boundaries off pacer Nat-Sciver Brunt, and they kept the momentum going from that point.

Navigre, who made a slow start making five off six balls, slipped into her aggressive best against pacer Issy Wong, hammering her for four fours in the third over to collect 16 runs and it was just the beginning of the onslaught.

Navigre, who was dropped on 42 by Wong near the ropes off Matthews, soon completed his fifty in just 25 balls and it came through a thundering six off the West Indian spinner over long-on.

But leg-spinner Amelia Kerr had player of the match Navigre stumped to give a bite of respite to Mumbai, who seemed to have gained a foothold as Wong dismissed both Healy and Tahlia McGrath in the 11th over.

They needed 64 runs at this stage, but Grace Harris (38, 17 balls) and Deepti Sharma (27, 20 balls) made those runs with minimum fuss.

Earlier, Mumbai made a sedate start to their innings and had to wait till the fourth over for the first four.

Yastika Bhatia (26, 22b) gave Mumbai the much-needed acceleration when the left-hander hammered 18 runs off left-arm pacer Anjali Sarvani through a sequence of three fours and a six, which was thumped right over the bowler’s head.

However, Bhatia did not last long as a pull played closer to her body off Harris ended in the hands of Rajeshwari Gayakwad.

Matthews too tried to up the tempo and found the occasional big hits amid a slew of mis-time shots. Her four and six off successive balls off left-arm spinner Gayakwad were a reminder to her power and timing when in flow.

Matthews, who was dropped on 43 by Deepti off Harris, reached her fifty in 44 balls but could not kick on.

Her effort to clear long-on off Gayakwad did not have elevation and distance as Harris completed an easy catch.

A couple of hefty blows in the final stages by Pooja Vastrakar (18, 12b) and Wong helped MI to cross the 150-run mark.

Kannada media reports ‘Naseer Saab Zindabad’ slogans as ‘Pakistan Zindabad’

February 28, 2024 by Nasheman

In the aftermath of the Rajya Sabha election results in Karnataka, a misleading narrative emerged when several news channels reported that supporters of Congress candidate Naseer Hussain chanted “Pakistan Zindabad” during the celebrations. However, a closer examination of the video footage revealed that the supporters were actually shouting “Naseer Saab Zindabad.”

Major Kannada news outlets, including TV9, Suvarna News, Public TV, Vistara News, News First, and Republic Kannada, propagated the false claim that the slogans were in support of Pakistan.

Some reports suggested that a person standing next to Naseer Hussain was the one shouting “Pakistan Zindabad.” However, another video showed that the individual was, in fact, chanting “Naseer Saab Zindabad.”

Several news channels aired the misleading information, leading to BJP leaders expressing their intent to file a complaint with the Vidhana Soudha Police Station.

Alt News co-founder Muhammad Zubair also shared the video in slow motion on his X account, in which people can be seen chanting ‘Nasir Saab Zindabad’.

Monkey fever claims one more life in Karnataka, takes death toll in state to 4 since Jan

February 27, 2024 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: A 57-year-old woman succumbed to Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), commonly known as monkey fever, in Shivamogga district, taking the death toll due to the virus in Karnataka to four since January this year, Health officials said on Monday. She hailed from Uttara Kannada district, one of the regions affected by the virus.

“One more death due to KFD was reported yesterday (Sunday) night. A 57-year-old woman died in Shivamogga. She was admitted in ICU for the past 20 days and was on ventilator support. She had multiple issues. Total death toll in the state due to this virus has now reached four,” a senior health official said.

According to the latest data shared by the health department, a total of 4,641 tests have been done from January one to February 25, of which positive cases stand at 120. As many as 95 people have been discharged. As on date, there are 22 active cases.

The first death due to KFD this year was reported from Hosanagara taluk of Shivamogga district on January eight wherein an 18-year-old girl succumbed to the virus. The other two deaths were reported in Uttara Kannada and Chikkamagaluru districts. Earlier this month, Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao held a high-level meeting with legislators and officers of the districts which reported an outbreak of the disease. The state government is also in talks with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for bringing out an effective vaccination, officials said.

According to officials, KFD spreads due to bites of ticks that generally survive on monkeys. This tick bites humans which causes the infection. Humans also contract the disease by coming in contact with cattle bitten by ticks.

The authorities are carrying out door-to-door awareness programs about the precautions to be taken. Those living in and around the forest area need to be more careful as they are at high risk of contracting the disease, they said.

Mandya MP Sumalatha confident of getting BJP ticket in LS election

February 27, 2024 by Nasheman

Mandya: Mandya MP Sumalatha Ambareesh on Monday said she was confident of getting a BJP ticket to contest the Lok Sabha election from here even as there are strong indications that the party’s alliance partner JD(S) is firm on fielding its candidate in the segment.

Sumalatha contested the 2019 general elections as an independent and she was backed by the BJP. She had defeated former Prime Minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda’s grandson and former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil Kumaraswamy.

She said her confidence stems from the fact that the party demonstrated that it gave preference to women by passing the women’s reservation bill.

There is no doubt about getting a BJP ticket and my fight is to see that the BJP retains the Mandya seat. I am quite confident that I will get a BJP ticket from Mandya,” she told reporters here.

Sumalatha’s comments assume significance as there are some reports that the BJP may leave the Mandya seat to its alliance partner JD(S).

Sumalatha said, “You see, they (BJP) had supported me in the previous election. I too supported them (BJP) whenever they raised issues in the Parliament and brought important bills. Also I extended them my support from outside in the 2023 assembly elections.”

When reminded of BJP’s alliance with the JD(S) this time, she said, “Are they my enemy if they (BJP) become friendly with the JD(S)? It’s not like that. I am also part of the BJP-led NDA just as JD(S) is, since I too supported them(BJP).”

The JD(S), which joined the BJP led NDA in September last year to fight the Lok Sabha election together, is also keen on the Mandya seat, which has been its stronghold, party sources said.

On Sunday, JD(S) second-in-command Kumaraswamy had a meeting with the party leaders regarding Lok Sabha election in Mandya.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, he said “We had a long discussion on Mandya. They all expressed their thoughts on winning this seat. We have taken note of their thoughts.”
