Sarvagna Nagar MLA KJ George said that all his assets were legal and declared before the Lokayukta, Income Tax Department and the Election Commission.

BENGALURU:  The Enforcement Directorate (ED), Bengaluru zonal unit, is examining allegations of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violation against senior Congress leader and Sarvajnanagar MLA KJ George.

This follows a complaint by Karnataka Rashtra Samithi (KRS) president Ravi Krishna Reddy. “The ED will register a case against George under FEMA only if there is evidence against him,” said sources who are privy to the development. On his part, George has rubbished Reddy’s charges against him as “baseless.”

Speaking to TNIE, the Congress MLA said that all his assets were legal and declared before the Lokayukta, Income Tax Department and the Election Commission. “If any of these agencies seek any clarification from me, I will submit my reply. Since Reddy has filed the complaint with the ED, he should allow the agency to verify the charges. Why is he going to media for publicity? The ED has not issued any notice to me so far. I have nothing to hide,” George asserted.

Meanwhile, Reddy told TNIE that in September this year, they had submitted a detailed complaint to the ED against George with several annexures of his alleged properties outside India as proof. On November 11, Reddy wrote another letter to the ED to take prompt action against the Congress MLA under FEMA.
“George has held key portfolios in the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government and the previous Congress-JDS coalition government. He has amassed huge properties in India and abroad, particularly in New York,” he alleged.

He said that in his complaint to the ED, he has given a detailed description of properties held by George and his family. “Most of the properties are in the name of George’s daughter Renita Abraham and son-in-law Kevin Abraham,” Reddy claimed.George countered this stating that his daughter is an American citizen. “The Government of India can seek information from the US government about their assets,” he said.

In just two years, residents turn Bengaluru dump yard into park for senior citizens

November 13, 2019 by Nasheman

What was once a black spot and dumping ground has now been turned into a serene green space for senior citizens in Domlur.

The dumping yard in Domlur that was converted into the Ajja-Ajji Park

BENGALURU:  What was once a black spot and dumping ground has now been turned into a serene green space for senior citizens in Domlur. It took the residents and the authorities two long years to transform this space into the Ajja-Ajji (grandfather-grandmother) Park.

Dr Hemant Kumar Agarwal, a paediatrician and the man who initiated the cleanliness drive, said, “Eight years ago, this spot was a cesspool of diseases. BBMP used it as a garbage dump. I tried creating awareness among residents.”

It was only after the residents teamed up with the NGO The Ugly Indian that the garbage dump started taking the shape of an urban park.

BBMP and the Resident Welfare Association then joined hands to make a green lung space.

Domlur Corporator Lakshmi Narayan C R said, “The road was once inhabited by rodents, dogs and cows that fed on garbage. Now it has been transformed into a beautiful park, which elderly citizens can use.”

A representative of The Ugly Indian said, “The Ajja-Ajji park is one of the best examples of how residents and authorities can come together to convert a dirty trash dump into a lung space. The park is properly lit at night too.”

Balasubrahmani G, a resident, said, “The park is a peaceful place now. My wife and I go there to spend our evenings without being bothered by traffic.”

Waste disposal in the ward has been addressed too. Madhumathi G, a homemaker and a resident, said, “Earlier, people in the area openly dumped their garbage in this spot. But now, we have a proper waste disposal method where the auto tippers collect garbage regularly. Organic waste and animal manure are used as compost for the plants.”

CBI raids IPS officers, others in IMA scam

November 9, 2019 by Nasheman

Agency raided 15 locations of officers and IMA entities and found incriminating documents and digital evidences

BENGALURU: In another huge embarrassment to the state bureaucracy, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday raided the residential premises of two serving senior IPS officers – Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Additional Commissioner of Police (Administration) Hemant Nimbalkar and Superintendent and Commandant, State Reserve Police, 1st Battalion Ajay Hilori in the alleged multi-crore I Monetary Advisory (IMA) ponzi scheme. The CBI had earlier searched the residence and official premises of Additional Director General of Police and former Bengaluru city police commissioner Alok Kumar in the illegal phone tapping scam.

The CBI raided 15 locations of officers and IMA entities and recovered “various incriminating documents, property documents, material objects and digital evidences in an ongoing investigation of a scam”, a CBI official said.

Besides Nimbalkar and Hilori, CBI sleuths conducted searches at the premises of suspended IAS officer and former deputy commissioner, Bengaluru Urban, B M Vijay Shankar; former assistant commissioner, Bengaluru North subdivision, L C Nagaraj; former chief engineer, Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA), P D Kumar; and former village accountant, Bengaluru North subdivision, Manjunath. The CBI also raided the premises of former deputy SP, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), E B Sridhara; then police inspector and station house officer, Commercial Street, M Ramesh; and former sub inspector, Commercial Street, Gowri Shankar.

The CBI has conducted searches at 15 locations – 11 in Bengaluru; one each in Mandya, Ramanagara, and Belagavi districts and one in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.Nimbalkar was then IGP, Economic Offences Wing, CID, and Hilori was posted as DCP Bengaluru (East) then.

The CBI stated: “These public servants had conducted inquiries against the IMA Group entities, furnished favourable reports and given clean chits to them. As a result, no action was allegedly initiated against IMA and the fraud continued unhindered due to the clean chit reports given by these officers despite the fact that the Reserve Bank of India had repeatedly flagged the issue about unauthorised collections and raising of deposits by IMA during the State Level Coordination Committee (SLCC) meetings and had also written several letters to various authorities in Karnataka.”

Based on these letters from RBI, inquiries were conducted through these officers. “They allegedly failed in their duties in pointing out the glaring irregularities committed by the IMA, and gave clean chits. Investigation into the expenditure statements of IMA revealed the alleged payments of huge bribe amounts on multiple occasions by the founder and managing director Mohammed Mansoor Khan and other IMA directors to these officials,” the CBI spokesperson added.

The CBI had registered a case on August 30 in the IMA scam on the request of the state government and further notification from the Centre. The case was earlier being investigated by Karnataka Special Investigation Team.

Mansoor and other IMA entities had illegally collected deposits from the public in the form of investments on various ponzi schemes with a promise of getting high returns. Most of the deposits were allegedly misappropriated by Mansoor and other IMA entities for acquiring assets on their personal names and names of family members. “The accused have allegedly paid huge bribes to public servants and others as protection money to carry out their illegal activities,” the officer added.

Minto doctors demand action against Karnataka Rakshana Vedike members

November 4, 2019 by Nasheman

The main demand of the students remains that those accused be arrested or appropriate action be taken against them.

Medical students and doctors protest outside Minto Hospital

BENGALURU: In continuation with the strike that began on Saturday, junior doctors of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) working at Minto Eye Hospital boycotted Out Patient Department services after one of their female colleagues was allegedly assaulted by members of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike. On Friday, members of the pro-Kannada outfit came in to demand for compensation for a patient who lost his sight after an eye surgery went wrong, owing to the use of a contaminated drug. Later, they allegedly began assaulting her because she could not speak Kannada.

“Our colleague was not even the person responsible for the surgery. Moreover, she is not from Karnataka. What kind of impression does it give about Bengaluru or Karnataka when we assault outsiders, especially a doctor who was just doing her job?” complained Dr Savitha, one of the doctors on strike. The main demand of the students remains that those accused be arrested or appropriate action be taken against them. A protest is likely to take place on Monday morning as well.

“We have reservation for only 50 percent of the seats for Kannadigas. The rest are people from other states who come after writing NEET. What if Kannadigas went to study and practice outside the state and they are attacked for not knowing the language?” demanded Doddabasappa, another doctor.

A male colleague who tried filming the incident was allegedly assaulted as well.

“There is a procedure to complain if any patient has an issue. They should approach the right authority,” Dr Savitha added.Speaking at an event on Sunday, Deputy Chief Minister and Medical Education Minister Dr C N Ashwath Narayan said,” I have asked police to take action against the perpetrators. I urge the doctors to return to work as patients should not be affected. Necessary security will be provided to doctors.”

Restaurants across Bengaluru to cut plastic use

November 4, 2019 by Nasheman

Manuchandra, the head of the Bengaluru chapter, pointed out that marine life was the worst affected due to plastic and very soon there will be a shortage of seafood in the city.

plastic, plastic ban

BENGALURU: In order to reduce the amount of plastic waste generated by the city, the Bengaluru Chapter of the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) will promote the use of eco-friendly products in city’s restaurants.

NRAI is creating awareness among restaurants to use paper bags, reed or bamboo straws, bagasse containers and glass bottles. “Bengaluru is the fourth-largest generator of plastic in the country. Many restaurants in the city can bring about change. We are asking restaurants to start using bagasse, the leftover fibre after the extraction of the juice from sugarcane, which is eco-friendly,” said Prakash Pandey, NRAI member and director of Byg Brewski Brewing Company.

Manuchandra, the head of the Bengaluru chapter, pointed out that marine life was the worst affected due to plastic and very soon there will be a shortage of seafood in the city.

More than 3,000 restaurateurs joined hands to clean up Koramangla and Indiranagar on Sunday. The team collected 754 bags of plastic waste and 874 bags of other waste. Even elected representatives like MLAs N A Harris and Ramlinga Reddy were a part of the exercise.

The NRAI has also made posters to create awareness to use eco-friendly products and they gave these posters to restaurants. “We are spreading in the message by making posters. At TOIT restaurant, we have started using smaller glasses as many people only drink half a glass of water and they waste the rest,” said Mukesh Tolani, director of TOIT.
