Cabinet expansion may change power equations

December 14, 2019 by Nasheman

Power equations in Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa’s government are set to change after the cabinet expansion in the next few days.

BENGALURU: Power equations in Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa’s government are set to change after the cabinet expansion in the next few days. While newly-elected legislators are likely to get important portfolios, Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi, seen as the high command’s blue-eyed boy, is unlikely to retain his current position in the pecking order.

Although he had lost the 2018 assembly elections, Savadi was appointed DCM, along with Govind Karjol and Dr CN Ashwath Narayan. While some saw it as an attempt to groom the Lingayat leader, it was also seen as a strategic move ahead of elections in Maharashtra, where he was in-charge of assembly segments in border districts. But the party did not do well in those constituencies. Now, the party is likely to make him MLC in place of Congress MLC Rizwan Arshad, who was elected MLA from Shivajinagar in the recent bypolls.

Sources said that Savadi’s equation within the government will change as he will be a DCM but as member of the council, while the two other DCMs will be members of the assembly. Equations in his home district Belagavi, too, are likely to change as three or four MLAs, including Umesh Katti, are likely to be inducted into the ministry. “The equations will change as Ramesh Jarkiholi and Umesh Katti, too, are influential leaders from the same district,” sources said. Savadi was keen to contest the bypolls from his home constituency Athani, but had to make way for Mahesh Kumathalli.

Ashwath Narayan, who is said to be keen on the coveted Bengaluru Development ministry, could be rewarded for his role in the KR Pete assembly elections, if his party so decides, and his position will automatically get a boost. Currently, he is seen as the BJP’s face in the state capital, where the party has done well in the bypolls.

However, political analyst MK Bhaskar Rao says that Savadi’s standing in the government will not change much, even if he is made MLC and continues as a DCM. “In fact, that will pose a new challenge for the chief minister, as House leaders in both the council and assembly will be from the same community. As DyCM, Savadi will have to be made leader in the council, in place of minister Kota Srinivas Pujari,” he added.

Centre’s nod for 22 express highways worth Rs 1.5L crore in Karnataka

Centre's nod for 22 express highways worth Rs 1.5L crore in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Dec 10: In a major thrust to infrastructure development in Karnataka, the Road Transport and Highways Ministry on Tuesday gave the nod for 22 Green express highways in Karnataka worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore.

This includes a new alignment of the Pune-Bengaluru Express Highway, which will be completed in the next few years at a cost of Rs 50,000 crore.

Today we met Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa.

We have just sanctioned projects worth more than Rs 1.5 lakh crore for the state.

Actually the annual infrastructure plan for Karnataka was Rs 2,150 crore, which we decided to increase to Rs 3,990 crore, Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways said.

He was speaking at the inaugural session of the 10th edition of Excon-2019, a five-day International Construction Equipment and Construction Technology Trade Fair here.

The event has been organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry in association with the Karnataka government, Ministry for Road Transport and Highways and the National Highway Authority of India.

We are making 22 green express highways. Today we cleared the Pune-Bengaluru project as a Green Express Highway, a new alignment of 600 km, costing about Rs 50,000 crore.”

Gadkari said his ministry and the state have sanctioned 2,300 km of new roads where the Detailed Project Report is ready.

The bidding process would start soon, he said, adding that the Chief Minister had given an assurance on clearing any hassles related to land acquisition and environment clearance for these projects.

Another important infrastructure project of ring road in Bengaluru was also resolved in the meeting, with the Centre agreeing to the States request to bear 80 per cent of the land acquisition cost, he said.

However, the Ministry expected the state to exempt taxes on steel and cement to be used for building the ring road.

So today the problem with the ring road is resolved and today it will be a great present from the chief minister to the people of Karnataka, Gadkari said.

He opined that these highway projects would become the growth engine for Karnataka.

Three cheers for BJP in Bengaluru, one for Congress

December 10, 2019 by Nasheman

The BJP regained its hold on the state capital after more than a decade, with emphatic wins in three out of the four constituencies which went to bypolls.

BENGALURU: The BJP regained its hold on the state capital after more than a decade, with emphatic wins in three out of the four constituencies which went to bypolls.BJP romped home in KR Puram, Yeshwanthpura and Mahalakshmi Layout, the relatively new constituencies formed in 2008. Congress managed to win Shivajinagar seat.

Now the BJP tally from the city has gone up to 14 in the state assembly. Just a year back, Congress had 14 MLAs, JDS two and the BJP 11. The city has 27 assembly constituencies excluding RR Nagar where byelection was not held. Following the resignation of rebel MLAs and their subsequent disqualifications, BJP had won the recent mayoral elections in BBMP taking the civic body into its hold.

According to data provided by state Chief Electoral Office, the BJP vote share in the three assembly constituencies it won on Monday has gone up from 2.09 lakh in 2018 to 3.7 lakh. With Byrathi Basavaraju, ST Somashekar and Gopaliah being its candidate this time, the party managed a neat 1.61 lakh more voters than its nominees had polled more than a year ago.

Rizwan only face-saver for Cong in city
Bengaluru: Thirty-nine-year-old Rizwan Arshad who won from Shivajinagar assembly constituency is the only face-saver for the Congress in Bengaluru city.  The BJP did not induct Roshan Baig, who has been MLA three times from the constituency, into its fold and instead it fielded former councillor Saravana who came second best against Rizwan.  A senior Congress leader said the absence of Baig proved to be advantageous for Rizwan who is a complete ‘’outsider’’ to Shivajinagar.

Gujarat cops search Nithyananda ashram

December 1, 2019 by Nasheman

Nityananda has been accused of rape, forceful confinement and kidnapping.

Self-styled godman Nithyananda

BENGALURU: Armed with a warrant issued by the Gujarat High Court, a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) team of the Gujarat police on Saturday searched the ashram of absconding self-styled godman Nithyananda at Bidadi near here. “A search was carried out at the ashram. After it was established that Nithyananda was not there, the managers at the ashram were questioned about his whereabouts,” a police officer from Bidadi said.

Nityananda has been accused of rape, forceful confinement and kidnapping. The Gujarat HC on Tuesday had slammed the police and asked them to produce two missing women who are siblings — Lopamudra Sharma and Nandhitha Sharma — before the court on December 10. The directive came on a plea filed by the girls’ father Janardhan Sharma, who resides in Bengaluru. It is widely believed that Nityananda, along with the two girls, is in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Gujarat police are working with Interpol, the Ministry of External Affairs and other agencies to trace the two women. Sources said the Karnataka police have been extending cooperating to their Gujarat counterparts in the investigation.

‘Nithyananda hasn’t attended court cases in Ramanagara’

However, a senior police officer told The New unday Express that Nithyananda has not been at his Bidadi for almost a year. “He is not in the country. He has not even attended court cases in Ramanagara,” said the officer. The two young women had recently posted videos on Facebook saying that they will not return to India unless the authorities meet their conditions which included being given
police protection.

They also said they were ready for a video conference at the embassy in Trinidad and Tobago. However, the Gujarat High Court rejected this and ordered that the two women should appear in person during the next hearing on December 10.Janardhan Sharma has alleged that the authorities at the ‘Yogini Sarvagyapeetham’ in Ahmedabad did not allow them to meet their children.

Four of his children were initially enrolled at the Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam at Nithyananda Nagara in Bidadi, near Bengaluru in 2013. Later, all four were shifted to Ahmedabad without notice last year.
Two minor children were returned, but the two adult daughters were kept in the ashram, he had complained.

Onion off the plates at houses and hotels in Bengaluru

November 30, 2019 by Nasheman

It is usual that whenever there are floods in Maharashtra and parts of northern Karnataka, onion supply is hit because those regions produce the vegetable on a large scale

A vendor selling onions at the Patamata rythu bazar in Vijayawada on Friday

BENGALURU: The soaring price of onions has taken a toll on the onion-rich food items such as Irulli Dosa in hotels here and in surrounding areas.

Presently, the onions are being sold between Rs 80 and Rs 120 per kg depending on the quality. Shopkeepers are apprehensive the prices may shoot up further while many families have avoided the use of onion in their meals.

Some hoteliers have stopped supplying Irulli Dosa (onion dosa) as the prices have gone up, while some other have reduced the quantity of the vegetable in other food items, president of All Karnataka Pradesh Hotel and Restaurant Owners Association Chandrashekhar Hebbar told PTI.

He, however, was optimistic that the shortage of onion in the market is for a short-term and said the situation would be better after a month or so.

It is usual that whenever there are floods in Maharashtra and parts of northern Karnataka, onion supply is hit because those regions produce the vegetable on a large scale, said Hebbar.

Another hotelier Vasudev Adiga said his hotel chain per se has not reduced the quantity of onion and has decided to bear the extra burden caused by soaring prices.

However, his hotel chain has decided to introduce some innovative items, which require less onions. We will introduce new items using less costly items. It will bring a new taste to our customers, Adiga said.

In a lighter vein, Adiga said innovators usually take advantage of a situation like this and come up with alternative solutions.

That’s the way innovation happens, Adiga explained. He too said the current phase of onion shortage is for a short duration, as the government has decided to import the vegetable
