BENGALURU:  With just eight days to go for the crucial bypolls, Congress seems to be finding it difficult to ensure that its local leaders remain loyal and work for party candidates. In Shivajinagar assembly segment in Bengaluru, two Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) members and a former block Congress president have been expelled from the party, as they were working for the BJP candidate.

MK Gunashekar, BBMP member from Jayamahal ward; Netravati Krishnegowda, BBMP member from Ramaswamypalya ward and former Block Congress president Krishnegowda have been expelled from the primary membership of the party for six years for anti-party activities, read a statement issued by the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

Gunashekar admitted that he is campaigning for the BJP candidate in Shivajinagar. “I consulted people in my ward and based on their suggestion, I am campaigning for the BJP candidate, as we need a stable government under the leadership of BS Yediyurappa,” he told The New Indian Express. “I will consult people in my ward and take a decision ,” he said when asked if he is joining the BJP.

Gunashekar also said disqualified Congress legislator R Roshan Baig is also supporting BJP candidate M Saravana. Baig was keen to contest on a BJP ticket, but the party refused to induct him. In the three-way contest, the support of Baig and local Congress leaders is likely to give an edge to the BJP candidate. MLC Rizwan Arshad is the Congress candidate and Tanveer Ahmed is the JDS candidate in Shivajinagar.

Bandh in 2 towns today as anger against Madhuswamy rages

November 21, 2019 by Nasheman

Protests were held in Shivamogga, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Chikkanayakanahalli, Belgaum and Mysore on Wednesday.

BENGALURU/TUMAKURU: The controversy over Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister JC Madhuswamy alleged insult to a religious leader of the Kuruba community refused to die down. So much so that the leaders of the community called for a bandh in Huliyar town, Tumakuru and Shikaripura, Shivamogga on Thursday. What’s more, no less than18 other backward communities as also the Lingayats have extended their support for the bandh.

Stung by the outrage, the minister expressed regret over his remarks. But the Kuruba community continues to their vent anger against Madhuswamy, demanding he be dropped from the Yediyurappa Cabinet. Protests were held in Shivamogga, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Chikknayakanahalli, Belagavi and Mysuru on Wednesday.

Community leaders slammed Madhuswamy saying, “He is intoxicated with power, hence displayed arrogance.’’Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister K S Eshwarappa, also a Kuruba leader, came out in support of his colleague.  When asked why Madhuswamy had not apologised earlier, Eshwarappa went into an offensive, blaming the media for “trying to make Madhuswamy a scapegoat”, even calling the media “prostitutes”.

The controversy erupted after Madhuswamy, who is MLA from Chikkanayakanahalli, was blamed for dropping the name of saint-poet Kanakadasa from a junction in Huliyar. The roundabout was officially named Kanakadasa Circle in 2006 by the then village panchayat. Even as Kuruba leaders prevailed upon him not to change the name, Madhuswamy refused to relent and wanted it named after the late seer Shivakumara Swamiji of Siddaganga mutt. At a peace meeting recently, Madhuswamy is alleged to have insulted Kuruba community pontiff Ishwarananda Swamiji and videos of it went viral.

What angered the community further was Madhuswamy statement that since Huliyar had been upgraded to a TP in 2018, a fresh resolution needs to be passed to retain the name.CM B S Yeddyurappa apologised on behalf of Madhuswamy. He said that he will restore the name of Kanakadasa at the roundabout after the bypolls.

Sarvagna Nagar MLA KJ George said that all his assets were legal and declared before the Lokayukta, Income Tax Department and the Election Commission.

BENGALURU:  The Enforcement Directorate (ED), Bengaluru zonal unit, is examining allegations of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violation against senior Congress leader and Sarvajnanagar MLA KJ George.

This follows a complaint by Karnataka Rashtra Samithi (KRS) president Ravi Krishna Reddy. “The ED will register a case against George under FEMA only if there is evidence against him,” said sources who are privy to the development. On his part, George has rubbished Reddy’s charges against him as “baseless.”

Speaking to TNIE, the Congress MLA said that all his assets were legal and declared before the Lokayukta, Income Tax Department and the Election Commission. “If any of these agencies seek any clarification from me, I will submit my reply. Since Reddy has filed the complaint with the ED, he should allow the agency to verify the charges. Why is he going to media for publicity? The ED has not issued any notice to me so far. I have nothing to hide,” George asserted.

Meanwhile, Reddy told TNIE that in September this year, they had submitted a detailed complaint to the ED against George with several annexures of his alleged properties outside India as proof. On November 11, Reddy wrote another letter to the ED to take prompt action against the Congress MLA under FEMA.
“George has held key portfolios in the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government and the previous Congress-JDS coalition government. He has amassed huge properties in India and abroad, particularly in New York,” he alleged.

He said that in his complaint to the ED, he has given a detailed description of properties held by George and his family. “Most of the properties are in the name of George’s daughter Renita Abraham and son-in-law Kevin Abraham,” Reddy claimed.George countered this stating that his daughter is an American citizen. “The Government of India can seek information from the US government about their assets,” he said.
