Congress, JDS hit out at BSY for ‘note printing machine’ remark

August 15, 2019 by Nasheman

Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa’s comment on ‘note printing machine’ drew criticism from the Congress and the JDS.

BSY, Yeddyurappa

By Express News Service

BENGALURU: Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa’s comment on ‘note printing machine’ drew criticism from the Congress and the JDS. On Tuesday, in response to flood-victims in Shivamogga who demanded relief, the Chief Minister said that the government does not possess a currency note printing machine.

Opposition leader Siddaramaiah criticised the statement saying, “The CM of Karnataka does not have a currency note printing machine to provide relief funds for flood victims but has Akshaya Patra to fund those MLAs whose greed exceeds the imagination of the common man.’’ He was referring to the MLAs of his own party who were allegedly lured by the BJP, and helped bring his government down. The JDS also added saying, “Who printed currency notes to ferry disgruntled MLAs in chartered planes and house them in a Five Star hotel?’’

This is with reference to HD Kumaraswamy’s 14- month government that was brought down after many of the coalition legislators resigned. The Karnataka Congress also lashed out at the chief minister for an advertisement with his picture in a vernacular newspaper. The advertisement was printed on the front page of the paper on Wednesday.

“BS Yediyurappa, what kind of a ‘Thirukana Shoki’ (showing off) is this? Narendra Modi has not visited the state to survey the flood, the government has not declared it a national calamity, they have not released Rs 5,000 crore for relief, and they have not yet expanded the ministry. Without doing work they spend money on advertisements, it is like insulting the flood victims.

Karnataka Congress further sarcastically added saying ”There was a note printing machine in the home of  KS Eshwarappa.’’

IMA scam: Roshan Baig skips deposing before SIT again, cites health issues

August 15, 2019 by Nasheman

He was last quizzed in IMA case in July and has been issued 5 notices since

Congress MLA in Karnataka Roshan Baig

BENGALURU: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the multi-crore I Monetary Advisory (IMA) scam seems to have no option but to wait for the appearance of disqualified Congress legislator R Roshan Baig. Baig has so far been issued notices by the SIT team five times and the last he was supposed to appear before the SIT was on Tuesday, but he gave it a miss.

SIT sources say Baig seems to be buying time, but they are helpless as he has been citing health problems.
“As a responsible citizen — and as he had promised to SIT — he is supposed to be cooperating with us for questioning. But we have only been getting medical certificates seeking more time. We have no option but to wait,” said a senior officer.

The last time Baig was detained for questioning was in July when he was quizzed for over nine hours.
He has been accused of receiving Rs 400 crore from IMA founder Mansoor Khan. “It is important for us to record his statement as Mansoor has named him as one of the beneficiaries. He seems to be buying time since the very first time we summoned him,” a senior officer said.

However, this time the SIT has not yet decided as to what date to issue for Baig to appear again.
According to some political leaders from other parties, it is not helplessness but intentional delay by the SIT team.

“If he is not guilty of receiving any money then why is he avoiding questioning? This is all because he has the backing of the same government which once was so persistent on handing over the case to CBI,” said a Congress leader.

Meanwhile, a victim of the IMA fraud Sajida Ali, a resident of Shivajinagar said, “When will we get our money back? How can SIT or the government let them hide under the garb of medical reasons?”
Baig, however, has maintained that he is not involved in the scam and his name has been dragged unnecessarily. “I will answer to the SIT and not the media” he said.

Sigh of relief for many
More than 250 employees of IMA heaved a sigh of relief with the High Court allowing them to handover the original documents to its employees. A DySP-level officer has been designated for the same. “We are happy that we are getting the originals back. We have been unemployed for almost three months now,” said Mamatha Gangadhar, one of the employees.

BWSSB reduces supply, south Bengaluru suffers

August 14, 2019 by Nasheman

Pumping has been reduced by 23 mn litres a day due to high silt deposit caused by rain

BENGALURU: The high presence of silt in Cauvery water due to the rain has forced Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to reduce the supply of water to the city by 23 million litres of water per day (MLD) for the last couple of days. As a result, complaints of water shortage have trickled in from Bengaluru South.BWSSB draws water from the Shiva Anicut Reservoir, which is nearly 100km from the city, and pumps a maximum of 1,453 MLD to the city.

Speaking to The New Indian Express, engineer in-chief, BWSSB, Kemparamaiah said that heavy rain in the catchment areas of the Krishna Raja Sagar as well as Kabini dams has ensured release of additional water from them. “Due to the force in which water gushes, there has been much soil erosion resulting in high turbidity (huge silt deposits) in the water that reaches TK Halli dam. Also, due to the enormous force, a lot of weed and other floating matter has joined the water. These two factors have resulted in reduction in the amount of water that can be supplied to the city,” he said.

BWSSB used to pump 1,453 MLD of water until last week. “From Sunday, we have only been pumping 1,430 MLD of water. This situation is likely to continue for a short while,” he said. Asked about the impact of it on the water needs of Bengalureans, Kemparamaiah said that complaints were received from Jayanagar, Koramangala and Ejipura on Monday and Tuesday. “The water stored due to rainwater harvesting systems at homes and improvement in water levels in borewells due to recharge of groundwater caused by rains are helping in dealing with the shortage and there is no major crisis,” the Kemparamaiah added.

BWSSB’s chief engineer of Kaveri Division S V Ramesh said normalcy in water supply would be restored by Friday (August 16). “The deposit of sludge due to the turbidity in water is high and this has resulted in a reduction in rate of filtration. For the last three days, engineers of the Kaveri division have been working day and night to clear the dissolved air flotation nozzles attached to the aeration tanks in TK Halli.”
He said the turbidity was 205 NPU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units) on Sunday which reduced to 86 NTU by Tuesday. “We expect it to touch between 10 and 12 NPU within the next three days, which is the normal level,” the CE said.

Want to help flood-affected? Beware of fraudsters looking for quick bucks

August 13, 2019 by Nasheman

The floods this year have been one of the worst to hit the state in recent times, so much so that the property loss is estimated to be about Rs 40,000 crore.

Karnataka rains Karnataka floods

BENGALURU: The floods this year have been one of the worst to hit the state in recent times, so much so that the property loss is estimated to be about Rs 40,000 crore. There is an immediate need for funds and material supplies to put people back on their feet.

Amid a massive effort by genuine agencies and people to collect flood relief material and funds, there is a problem – there is an unscrupulous effort by many to make a quick buck.

All leaders have cautioned against donating to such unscrupulous agencies and people. For instance, many people are collecting money from motorists at traffic signals, from shops, eateries and commercial establishments as well as from residential areas. No one knows who these people are and where the money is going.

Cautioning people against donating to unscrupulous people and organisations, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa said, “Give money to the CM Relief Fund and relief materials to reputed agencies.’’

Congress leader D K Shivakumar, who visited flood-ravaged Hubballi-Dharwad and Belagavi, said,

“There is a great need of funds and materials. People should contribute responsibly. There are some unscrupulous characters who have made a business out of it. The authorities should be aware of who is collecting money and where it is going. Those collecting materials can inform the authorities.”

KPCC working president Eshwar Khandre said, “I went to camps in Raichur, Yadgir, Mangaluru, Kodagu and Mysuru. The camps in Raichur were the worst hit. Toilet facilities were not proper. One relief camp was almost empty as they didn’t have amenities. The collected materials will have to be distributed properly.’’

BJP spokesman Go Madhusudan said, “There are some anti-social elements who are making use of this opportunity to gain some profit. I request people to donate to the CM relief fund or to reputed organizations who have a fair track record.”

The company used artificial intelligence to fact-check this claim and found it to be untrue.

BENGALURU: Messages about petrol pumps being closed in Karnataka, owing to lack of transportation through flood-hit highways began spreading on social media, including WhatsApp and Twitter, on Thursday. It said petrol pumps will be closed for the next three days from August 9 to August 11 due to heavy rain and roadblock. People were advised to make alternate arrangements. A worried citizen uploaded the information on Logically app — a fake news fighting startup based in Karnataka (Mysuru) and the United Kingdom.

The company used artificial intelligence to fact-check this claim and found it to be untrue.“A user uploaded the claim on Twitter which he received on WhatsApp, which is assigned to a fact-checker to investigate. Our software that uses artificial intelligence goes through all kinds of tweets related to the subject. Further research led to a tweet by Akhila Karnataka Federation of Petroleum Traders official advising people not to panic and fall prey to fake messages about petrol bunks,” Suchita Goel, senior analyst and supervisor of Logically told TNIE.

Ranjith Hegde, secretary of Akhila Karnataka Federation of Petroleum Traders said, “Petrol tankers are transported by road or even through train wagons. If some highways are affected, we just use other longer routes. There is also a supply of fuel through pipelines between Chennai – Bengaluru and Mangaluru – Hassan.”
