Violence or taking law into the hands will not be tolerated: CM Bommai

April 27, 2022 by Nasheman

Parmesh S Jain

Ours is a government formed according to the Constitution. We are working with the spirit of law, order and equality.

There is no problem in spreading one’s thoughts. But the government will not tolerate if one takes law into one’s hands or indulges in violence. This message has been sent very clearly, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said.

Speaking to media persons at the Udupi helipad Bommai said, our government is functioning according to the laws.It is our duty to protect the law.

Replying to a question about Hindu Task Force being formed in Mangaluru against Love Jihad, Bommai said, there are laws to deal with everything.

Some of these laws were passed by the previous governments. We are not formulating any new rules.

Our work should speak

Reacting to opposition’s charge that the Chief Minister has turned dumb for the developments happening in the State, Bommai said,my actions are speaking. We should not speak. Our work should speak.

We know what decisions should be taken and what action to be taken at what time.I need not learn any lessons from them.

These are the people who dropped cases at the government level against those who were facing direct charges of murder.Where was their duty consciousness then?”Bommai asked.

Ours is a peaceful progressive State. We know how to protect this State. We will show it through our deeds,Bommai said.

Replying to a question about Siddaramaiah’s statement,Bommai said, many Hindu youth were killed during his tenure as the Chief Minister.

He withdrew the cases against the outfits which were accused of having a role in them.Had he lost his senses then?Bommai said.

When asked whether he would ban these outfits, Bommai just said, you will see it in the coming days.

Yediyurappa asks Karnataka CM to reconsider decision to name Shivamogga airport after him

April 25, 2022 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: Veteran BJP leader B S Yediyurappa has requested the Karnataka government to name the airport that is coming up at Shivamogga after any illustrious personality of the state, following it’s recent decision to name it after him.

Yediyurappa has written a letter to Bommai on April 24 in this regard.

“I am touched by Chief Minister Bommai’s decision to name the Shivamogga airport after me.

With all humility, I request the government to name the airport after any illustrious personality of Karnataka which will be a befitting tribute to their contribution,” Yediyurappa said in a tweet along with a copy the letter.

The government’s decision to name the airport after the state BJP strongman had elicited some opposition, with some people including those in the opposition pointing out that there were several prominent personalities from the district who deserve the honour.

Shivamogga is the political base of Yediyurappa, he is the MLA from Shikaripura Assembly segment in the district, while his elder son B Y Raghavendra is an MP from Shivamogga parliamentary constituency.

Thanking the Chief Minister for his assurance regarding immediate release of funds for the faster completion of the airport work and expressing gratitude to him and other leaders for the decision to name it after him, Yediyurappa in his letter pointed out that there were several patriots and visionaries who have contributed to the development of the country and compared to them his contribution is very small.

“I’m only filled with a sense of gratitude for having been able to serve the people who have continually supported and nurtured me.

Hence I am of the view that naming the new airport after me is not appropriate.

So please reconsider the decision and after discussing it at the right platform, I request you to name the airport after any illustrious personality who has contributed to the development of the country, the state and the history,” he added.

The Shivamogga airport will have the second-longest runway in Karnataka after Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru.

The airport, with international standard facilities, will be inaugurated in December this year.

R Ashoka raises bulldozers for rioters in Karnataka, hopes to kick up row

April 24, 2022 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: After the controversy over using bulldozers to raze buildings of rioters in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, Revenue Minister R Ashoka Saturday said he will speak to Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and other cabinet colleagues to use bulldozers in Karnataka to deal with rioters and anti-social elements.

“Those involved in the PSI recruitment scam are being arrested, irrespective of their party affiliations,” he said. Asked about the opposition Congress’ demand for the resignation of Home Minister Araga Jnanendra, he sarcastically said if Congress Legislature Party leader Siddaramaiah and senior leader Rahul Gandhi leave Congress, it will be good for that party.

On using bulldozers in the state, Jnanendra said in Udupi that the earthmovers were used in Uttar Pradesh to deal with criminal elements and if it becomes inevitable, the state government too may resort to similar action. Kateel said BJP is working to win 150 seats in Karnataka in the 2023 Assembly elections by showcasing the achievements of the state and central governments.

“Our party leaders are going on tours across the state in three batches to strengthen the party organisation. We are working hard to make our organisation all-encompassing,” he added.

Active cases up, fourth Covid wave knocking on Karnataka’s doors?

April 24, 2022 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: The Covid situation is making a worrisome turnaround with the active cases steadily rising even as Karnataka reported 139 fresh cases on Saturday, raising questions whether the state is moving towards the fourth wave of the pandemic.

The last time the state recorded over 100 fresh cases in a day was on March 24 when 109 additional cases were reported, after which April 21 recorded 100 cases. With the latest addition of 139 cases, the state’s Covid tally has gone up to 39,46,874.

Though experts said there is no reason to panic, the active cases rose from 1,464 on April 17 to 1,679 on Saturday, with the latest figure showing a 5.26 per cent rise from the previous day’s figures. In effect, the state’s active cases have moved back almost a month to when Karnataka reported 1,656 active cases on March 29.

Dr CN Manjunath, Director, Jayadeva Hospital and nodal officer for testing, Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), confirmed the presence of two new sublineages of BA2 variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid — BA.2.10 and BA.2.12 — which could be the reason behind the rising cases in the state.

Rise in active cases as discharges fall

However, D Randeep, Commissioner, Health & Family Welfare Services, said the presence of BA 2.10 and BA 2.12 in the state is neither confirmed nor officially reported by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG). While the number of fresh cases is rising rapidly, the number of discharges are falling, which is leading to a rapid rise in active cases.

However, there have been no deaths reported in Karnataka after April 9, and the toll has remained at 40,057 with the mortality rate at 1.01 per cent. Bengaluru has remained the sole powerhouse of infections lately. Of the 139 new cases, the state capital alone reported 132 — the remaining seven from Chitradurga (2) and Bengaluru Rural, Chikkamagaluru, Davanagere, Kolar and Ramanagara each reporting one case. Also, of the 1,679 active cases across Karnataka, Bengaluru alone has 1,601.

Health officials said this is also because of people in the densely-populated Bengaluru becoming complacent after mask-wearing since the Disaster Management Act was lifted from the Covid management protocol recently due to a decline in cases. Despite the rise in cases, Randeep said hospitalisations have not seen any increase and pointed to deaths being nil over the last two weeks. “The state is continuing with genomic surveillance in Bengaluru city to identify any new sub-lineages early,” he added.

It may be a stray incident: CM Bommai on two students skipping exam for not allowing hijab-wearing

It may be a stray incident: CM Bommai on two students skipping exam for not allowing hijab-wearing
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai

Kalaburagi/Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Friday termed as stray incident two students not appearing for the second PUC (class 12) exam after being denied permission to enter the examination hall as they were wearing hijabs.

“I’m not aware of it, it may be a stray incident. Our Education Minister will look into it,” the Chief Minister, who was in Kalaburagi district to attend BJP meetings, told reporters when asked about the girls not writing the exam after not being allowed to do so as they had the hijabs on.

Asked if the two students would be given another chance to write the exam, he said, “Whatever the Education Minister will say on this will be our (govt) stand.”

The two girls arrived at the exam centre by wearing hijab. They insisted that they be allowed to write the exam wearing hijab but the college authorities, citing the High Court order, denied them entry.

Later, the girls returned home.

As there is a ban on hijab or any cloth linked to religious identity, the authorities made arrangements at exam centres for the Muslim girls to remove their headscarves before entering the halls.

The girls who turned up at the examination wearing hijabs said they would remove them in the separate enclosure and wear them again after the exam is over.

The second-year pre-university examinations started in the State today amid tight security and in the shadow of the hijab row.

After getting bail in COVID violation case, D K Shivakumar attacks BJP

After getting bail in COVID violation case, D K Shivakumar attacks BJP

Bengaluru: Karnataka Congress President D K Shivakumar on Friday said he has got bail in connection with a case filed against him and five other party leaders for a pro-farmers protest they had staged in January 2021, in violation of COVID-19 curbs.

He accused the ruling BJP of indulging in “politics of hate”.

“The protest was at Freedom Park (in Bengaluru) where over 10,000 people had gathered, while a case was registered against six people including me intentionally under the Disaster Management Act…it is a different matter that we have to respect the law. We had gone to the civil court for elected representatives and got the bail,” Shivakumar told reporters here.

Pointing out that no cases were booked against BJP leaders who violated COVID curbs, he alleged that “politics of hate” is being practiced, aimed at creating legal trouble for him and Congress leaders.

While Shivakumar was accused number one in the case, the others include state working presidents Saleem Ahmed, Eshwar Khandre, former NSUI president H S Manjunath, former Youth Congress president Basanagouda Badarli and party leader Shafiulla.
