Opposition aligning with regional groups can’t be alternative to Modi: Raman Singh

April 2, 2018 by Nasheman

There can’t be a national alternative to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the support of small regional groups, said Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh who feels that any opposition grouping will collapse due to inherent contradictions.

He also said that the loss of a couple of parliamentary bypolls will not make any difference to the Bharatiya Janata Party winning next year’s Lok Sabha elections.

“Once upon a time it was Indira (Gandhi) versus all and now it is Modiji versus all. This is happening because of Modiji’s rising popularity. Some smaller parties can polarise in an effort to stop him but they would not succeed. They cannot emerge victorious against Modiji’s popularity,” Singh, the longest serving Chief Minister of the BJP, told IANS in an interview.

He also wondered that since the Congress is not in power in many states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu how are they dreaming of returning to power in 2019.

“Where would they get support from. With support of small regional groups, there cannot be a national alternative. These parties are coming together out of fear of Modiji’s popularity. See the past, they can never remain united.

“How long can (West Bengal Chief Minister) Mamata Banerjee be a friend of Congress at national level and enemy at state level. This is not going to sustain,” he said.

The Chief Minister, who is ruling the state since 2003, said the loss of a couple of parliamentary bypolls after winning five states cannot be called anti-Modi sentiment.

“We won those states where we were in a position of nothing. Although we lost Gorakhphur and Phulpur bypolls, we won all the major polls in the last four years. Bypoll results are impromptu reaction of people. It is not going to impact Modiji’s effect anyhow. It was because of Modiji we are ruling in most states. We have the maximum number of MPs and MLAs,” he said.

Claiming that there was no anti-incumbency against his government, Singh said even if it exists somewhere he would address it before the Assembly polls due later this year.

“Anti-incumbency is basically opposition to the system. When people’s expectations are not met and their grievances are not addressed, people raise their voice against the system. When such things are not addressed they take a big shape. Anti-incumbency can be beaten by development. We face the anti-incumbency through Lok Suraj Abhiyan and Vikas Yatra. This is the real spirit of gram swaraj when no one has grievances against the system,” he said.

Expressing confidence about returning to power again, he said being a national party the Congress was the main challenger for the BJP but added that Ajit Jogi, the former Chief Minister and President of the newly-formed Chhattisgarh Janata Congress (CJS), could play a major role in the polls.

“There would be an impact of Ajit Jogi’s presence. He cannot be rated weak. If there would be a division in Congress’s vote share, we will benefit directly or indirectly.”

Asked whether a tactical alliance of the Congress with Jogi can hurt his prospects in the elections, the Chief Minister said: “We have faced them when they contested jointly as well as when they fought separately. But when they contest separately, we are benefited more.”

Listing his government’s major achievements, he said that in the last 15 years his government’s focus was to provide for the basic needs of the people.

“When I assumed office in 2003 there was no power, no roads and no drinking water. It was a complete mess and there was a lack of infrastructure. People were forced to migrate to other parts of the country. There were starvation deaths.

“Today you can see there is power supply in 100 per cent households. We have created an extensive road network throughout the state. We brought an end to starvation deaths by launching food security scheme. We succeeded in making Chhattisgarh a malnutrition free state.

“We are providing Rs 50,000 to each individual under a health scheme like smart card. We have provided homes to six lakh families, gas cylinders to 35 lakh households. We formed a law for skill upgradation of workers. In fact, throughout my tenure we did our best to provide a prosperous life to our citizens,” he said.

Born on October 15, 1952 in Kawardha, Singh joined the Bharatiya Jan Sangh as a youth member and was the president of the youth wing in Kawardha from 1976-77. From a councillor of Kawardha municipality he progressed to become an MLA, MP and then union minister in the government of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee before being sent to the state as party president.

Asked about his role in national politics, Singh, an ayurvedic doctor-turned-politician, said that Chhattisgarh has always been his priority but he will abide by any party decision including if it decides to send him to the Centre.

“My present target is to form BJP government in Chhattisgarh for the fourth consecutive tenure. I have dedicated myself for this. If my priority would be asked, I will keep Chhattisgarh at top. But, if the party organisation takes any decision I will abide by it. What situation emerges ahead, I can’t say today but at present my priority is Chhattisgarh,” he told IANS during his Lok Suraj Abhiyan.

S. Africa to investigate Indian family’s citizenship

March 28, 2018 by Nasheman

South African Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs said on Tuesday it will institute a full-scale inquiry into the Indian Gupta family’s citizenship.

Terms of reference for an inquiry will be drawn up once all information has been gathered from the Home Affairs Department and Parliament, said Acting Committee Chairperson Donald Gumede, Xinhua reported.

Members of parliament prepare to vote for or against the motion of no confidence against South African president, Jacob Zuma in the South African parliament, Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017, in Cape Town, South Africa. While the president has survived several such votes in the past, this is the first to be conducted by secret ballot. (AP Photo/Rodger Bosch Pool Photo via AP)

“The decision really is to collect all information to decide whether we need a full investigative inquiry or not. In principle, we are not against it,” Gumede said.

This decision drew immediate applause from the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA).

The DA had requested that the committee launch an investigation into the controversy surrounding the naturalization of the Gupta family, which is accused of collaborating with former president Jacob Zuma and some senior government officials in looting from the state coffers, known as state capture.

South African police have launched a manhunt for some of the Gupta family members, whose whereabouts remain unknown.

The DA reveals that more Gupta family members have been granted South African citizenship than previously known.

This information was never revealed or reported to Parliament, as is required by law, the DA said.

Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba and his department only explained the circumstances surrounding the naturalization of five Gupta family members granted South African citizenship and registered as voters on the Independent Electoral Committee database, according to the DA.

The DA will ensure that Gigaba and the Guptas have no opportunity to dodge accounting to Parliament, said Haniff Hoosen, DA Shadow Minister of Home Affairs.

“We look forward to this inquiry and ensure that those found guilty of any corruption will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” Hoosen said.

Also on Tuesday, Gigaba refused to take the responsibility for granting citizenship to the Gupta family members.

He told MPs that former ministers of his portfolio should also go to Parliament to account for the naturalization of the Guptas.

The Guptas entered South Africa in the early 1990s, therefore the ministers of home affairs at that time should be called here to answer what were the reasons provided to grant them citizenship, Gigaba said.

The Guptas were naturalized between 2002 and 2006.

The ministers of home affairs at that time must come and answer questions about what were the conditions at the time, said Gigaba.

How YouTube Changed the World

February 13, 2015 by Nasheman

YouTube

In late 2005, when YouTube was just a few months old, one its co-founders announced that the site’s users were consuming the equivalent of an entire Blockbuster store each month. Today, 300 hours of video are uploaded to the site every minute. And Blockbuster… Well, kids, Blockbuster was a video rental shop offering films on DVD and VHS. VHS tapes were like giant cassettes. Cassettes were… Oh, never mind. From The Telegraph: How YouTube Changed the World.

Sprawling: Graves stretch away into the horizon at the Wadi Al-Salaam or Valley of Peace graveyard in the Iraqi holy Shiite city of Najaf.

Wadi Al-Salaam, which literally means the Valley of Peace, is an Islamic cemetery located in the holy city of Najaf, Iraq. The cemetery covers an area of 1485.5 acres and contains some five millions bodies, making it the world’s biggest cemetery.

With gravestones stretching out as far as the eye can see, the site is located close to the shrine of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, the Prophet Muhammad’s (SAWS) cousin and son-in-law and the fourth Caliph of Islam.

An estimated 500,000 additional bodies are buried at Wadi Al-Salaam every year, however in recent times the figure has been even higher due to victims of the country’s bitter civil war.

National Geographic's Cartographic Department Celebrates its 100th Birthday

February 6, 2015 by Nasheman

National Geographic’s cartographic department celebrated its 100th birthday recently. Here’s a look back at their work and some of NG’s most memorable maps.

The November 1988 map of Mount Everest, which took four years to produce, relied on a high-resolution camera carried on the Columbia space shuttle and 160 overlapping aerial images taken from a Learjet flying at 40,000 feet to map 380 square miles of the region.

A work of unearthly beauty, this 1969 map of the moon was the first ever to show both faces of the lunar surface on a single sheet—not just the familiar surface we see at night, but the hidden far side as well. Cartographic artist Tibor Toth, who delicately shaded the surface crater by crater, spent several weeks at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, to scope out his subject.

Muslim civilization stretched from Spain to China. From the 7th century onwards, the region contributed breakthrough scientific and cultural achievements on topics such as medicine, mathematics, astronomy and more, fostering a vibrant scientific temper within the Islamic world, and left an indelible mark on the rest of the world. Some of the most influential texts from the period are now available at the Qatar Digital Library.

The library, a joint project of the British Library and the Qatar Foundation, offers free access to 25,000 pages of medieval Islamic manuscripts. Among some of the most significant texts:

The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices (1206 A.D.), which was inspired by an earlier, 9th-century translation of Archimedes’ writings on water clocks. Devices such as the “Elephant Clock” (pictured below) were the most accurate time-keeping pieces before the first pendulum clocks were built in the 17th century by the Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens.

Breathtaking Images of an Iceberg That Looks Like a Giant Floating Gem

January 17, 2015 by Nasheman

alexcornell-antarctica

by E.D.W. Lynch: During a recent trip to Antarctica, designer and filmmaker Alex Cornell came across a breathtakingly beautiful iceberg that, unlike its icy neighbors, had a gem-like translucence and a striking aquamarine color. The unusual iceberg was an example of a rarely photographed phenomena–an iceberg that has recently inverted, revealing its normally hidden semi-translucent underside. Photos of the inverted iceberg can be viewed in Cornell’s Antarctica photo gallery and on his Instagram account.

A Golf Course on a Floating Man-Made Island

January 15, 2015 by Nasheman

At the Coeur d’Alene Resort golf course in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, USA, the 14th hole is located in a most unusual spot–it resides on a floating platform in the nearby lake. Golfers are ferried to the man-made island aboard a wooden motorboat. And because the platform floats, it can be moved around the lake to alter the layout of the course. According to the resort, thousands of golf balls that fail to make the 14th green are fished out of the lake each year.
