January 10, 2019 by Nasheman

A 35-year-old Bangladeshi man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for circulating photoshopped images of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other politicians including former Indian premier Manmohan Singh, amid criticism that her government is using tough internet laws to silence dissent.

Monir Hossain from Tangail was jailed by Bangladesh Cyber Tribunal judge Mohammad As-Shams Joglul Hossain on Wednesday.

Monir had been on bail and appeared in court for the verdict, bdnews24.com reported.

Alamgir Hossain and Subrata Shil — two others accused in the case started under the the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act — were acquitted as charges against them were not proved, the report said.

Monir used to run his ‘Monir Telecom’ shop at Tangail’s Nagarpur. He had sent doctored images of Hasina, late president Zillur Rahman and former Indian premier Singh to mobile phones of users in 2013, said the verdict.

Saturia Police arrested Alamgir after finding out that he was showing around the vulgur ‘photoshopped images’ on his phone.

Following his arrest, Alamgir told police he got the images from Monir Telecom.

Rights groups have criticised the government for using the the ICT laws to silence criticism. Critics have lashed out at the government for cracking down on free speech and an increasingly authoritarian rule. Some the recent strengthening of defamation laws with a new Digital Security Act (DSA) has spread a climate of fear.

The DSA also penalises obtaining papers, information, or pictures from government offices without official consent.

An FIR has been lodged against Mohan Kumar, Ananthu, Nanda, Srinidhi, Krishna Murthy, Manju and others under Section 7 and 8 of the Prevention of Corruption Act (ACB) under the Prevention of Corruption Act by the Inspector of Police .

The mystery is on the cell phone

It was Mohan’s statement.

We are not interfering with Minister Putturanga Shetty. The case
was handed over to the ACB . The ACB will conduct an impartial investigation. The BJP is blaming. However, the investigation will be transparent.

A 32-year-old rowdy sheeter from Bengaluru was found dead in a pool of blood in Tumakuru district on Tuesday, two months after he had eloped with Pallavi, the niece of Kiran Gopalaiah, a JD(S) MLA from Bengaluru. A special team has been formed to arrest the perpetrators, district police said.

“He may have been killed at night. It appeared he was attacked with lethal weapons, including machetes, at the spot where the body was found,” a police officer was quoted by The Times of India, as saying.

The deceased Manu R was working as a driver with the Mahalakshmi Layout MLA’s brother Guli Basava alias Basavaraju C (Pallavi’s father) and also ran a DVD shop on the side. According to The New Indian Express, a total of eight of Basavaraju’s men had allegedly kidnapped Manu and took him to the empty area in Jetti Agrahara village. The gang had allegedly forced Manu to consume alcohol and tied his arms and legs before killing him with sharp weapons.

Basavaraju had initially approached the police stating that Pallavi had gone missing on October 22 and it was later found out that Manu had also gone missing on the same day.

“We learnt Manu had married Pallavi and we tried to trace him. We couldn’t trace them and we still don’t know where Pallavi is staying,” said police.

Manu had posted several videos on Facebook speaking about death threats from Basavaraju and his son Kiran. In one of the videos, Manu was reportedly heard saying that police were hunting him for kidnapping Pallavi but the couple clarified that they had married each other out of their free will.

Police say the whereabouts of Pallavi are unknown.

According to police, Manu had more than 10 cases against him in Bengaluru, Ramanagara, Bengaluru Rural and Tumkur districts and is survived by his mother who lives in Ballagere village in Tumakuru.

Citizenship Bill: 6 tribal youths injured in police firing in Tripura

January 9, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : Six tribal youths, agitating against the NDA government’s controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, were injured in police firing in Tripura on Tuesday, police said.

“Some tribal youths while demonstrating against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill turned violent at Madhab Bari in western Tripura. CRPF troopers after being unable to control the mob opened fire injuring six tribal youths, two of them seriously,” said a police officer.

A jawan of the Central Reserve Police Force was also injured following an attack by agitators, who also burnt down at least 22 shops in the area.

The police said the CRPF and Tripura State Rifles jawans resorted to lathicharge and burst teargas shells to bring the situation under control before the firing.

Two tribal parties — Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura and Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura strongly opposing the Citizenship Bill — are yet to confirm the identity of the injured youths.

Two critically injured tribal youths shifted to the government-run Gobinda Ballav Panth Medical College and Hospital here.

Senior police officer along with large contingent of security forces are camping in the areas, 20 km north of Agartala.

Para-Military Assam Rifles had held a flag march in the mixed populated areas.

Police climed that the situation was under control.

Ruling BJP’s ally IPFT’s Assistant General Secretary Mangal Debbarma told IANS that they have extended moral support to the NESO’s shutdown in the northeastern region comprising seven states, excluding Sikkim.

“We did not organise any movement on Tuesday as part of the opposition to the Citizenship Bill,” said Debbarma, also the IPFT’s chief spokesman.

The IPFT is also a member of Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance NEDA (North East Democratic Alliance), convener of which is BJP-led Assam government’s powerful minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Tripura’s oldest tribal-based party INPT also strongly opposing the Citizenship Bill claimed that the proposed legislation can result in changing the demography of several northeastern states.

Amid strong opposition by various political parties, including Congress, Left and Trinamool Congress, the Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 that seeks to grant citizenship to migrants from six minority groups from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

IAS officer mercilessly beats up youth for making ‘lewd comments’ against his wife

Nasheman News : An Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer in West Bengal found himself in the eye of a storm on Monday after a video grab showing him and his wife mercilessly beating up a youth at a police station for making “lewd” comments on social media went viral.

Nikhil Nirmal, the District Magistrate of Alipurduar, was also seen threatening to kill the youth and claiming “nobody speaks against me in my district”, as police officers helplessly watched.

Taking a serious view of the incident, the state government has asked Nirmal to go on 10 days’ leave.

The young man, Vinod Kumar Sarkar, was brought to the Falakata Police Station on Sunday night after his Facebook post, which the DM and his wife found objectionable.

Nirmal stormed into the station soon after, and slapped and punched the youth 10 times. The IAS officer’s wife Nandini Krishnan was also seen in the video kicking the victim and asking him to spell out who had asked him to write the post.

An enraged Nirmal was heard saying: “If I can bring you to the police station in half an hour, then I can enter your house and kill you too.”

Sarkar, who was later arrested, bade forgiveness, but to no avail.

Towards the end of the video, a policeman was seen taking the youth away.

When asked about his version of the chain of events, he said: “Nandini madam had asked some questions on Facebook. I said ‘you don’t have any other identity. Your identity is that of your husband’.

“She then added me in a group, and abused me. I abused back,” he said.

His family members and human rights groups have raised their voice against the treatment meted out to Sarkar.

“Why did the DM and his wife beat up my son? I want the DM to be punished. If anything happens to my son, the DM should be held responsible,” said the youth’s mother Kalpana Sarkar.

Human rights activist Ranjit Sur said: “The DM has taken the law into his own hands. The police officers were mere spectators. The DM entered the police station with his wife and beat up the victim. The DM behaved like a mafia don. He is unsuitable for such a post. He must be given punishment. He should be placed under suspension immediately.”
