journalists attacked while reporting on ‘illegal mining’

December 8, 2018 by Nasheman

As authorities conveniently turn a blind eye to mining within the eco-sensitive zone around Bannerghatta National Park in greater Bengaluru, journalists trying to cover the illegal activity were allegedly attacked and threatened on Thursday afternoon. Three people have been taken into custody in connection with the incident.

News 9 TV journalist Nabeela Jamaluddin and her colleagues had gone to Tulasipura in Jigani taluk in the outskirts of Bengaluru to report on one crusher unit on Thursday afternoon. It was while leaving the spot that their cab was surrounded by musclemen who blocked their way for 25 minutes. All this while, around six to seven men abused the TV news crew and asked for the footage to be deleted.

“Seven people came and surrounded our car as we were moving towards the main road. They blocked our vehicle and started banging on our windows and threatened us to step out of the car. When we refused to step out, they started banging on our windows again and also threatened my car driver of dire consequences,” a part of Nabeela’s complaint copy reads.

“The goons insisted we delete the footage right in front of them. When we refused to delete it, they continued to threaten and intimidate us by constantly banging on the window and using vulgar language,” she said in her complaint.

“Since mobile connectivity is poor there, we could not reach police officials quickly. It was only after many dropped calls that I could reach the police including Anekal Deputy Superintendent of Police and give our location. But due to the remoteness of the place, it was a little difficult to locate us,” Nabeela told media later on Friday.

Even though the men knew the police approaching, they did not budge. It was only after much persuasion that they agreed to meet at the Bannerghatta Police Station. But the ordeal did not end there. Upon reaching the police station, the police in turn questioned Nabeela and her colleagues as to why where there in the first place, even as the men claimed that the crew had stepped into private property without permission. Nabeela further claimed that the crusher unit did not have necessary paper work from the state pollution control board and other authorities to run as a legal entity, even if they had clearance from the Mines and Geology Department.

“It was at this moment when I lost my cool. They could understand and see my hands were shivering due to the shock but still they were taking the side of the men. Later, after the DySP called, they mellowed down and listened to me,” she added.

Nabeela lodged a formal complaint based on which an FIR was registered by the police. Sections under which the accused were booked include Section 341 (wrongful restraint), 252 (intent of fraud), 504 (insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

Following the complaint, police have arrested three of the accused— Umesh, Muralu and Shankar and a local court sent them to 15 days in judicial custody.

“The three persons arrested work at the crushing unit. They have been taken into custody and we are continuing our investigation into the incident. So far, action has not been taken against the person running the unit,” a police official investigating the incident told media.

Mining and Geology Minister Rajshekhar Patil has taken cognisance of the incident and ordered a detailed report in the matter.

Reports of journalists being attacked also prompted Bengaluru District Collector Vijaya Shankar to visit the spot on Friday. Speaking to News9, he said, “I don’t think a lot of mining activity has taken place in the recent past. However, our officers have informed me that some amount of crushing activity has taken place. I have given very clear instructions to senior geologists, tahsildars and police that this kind of illegal activity should not be allowed to take place either in the day or night.”

Rampant Illegal mining in the stretch leading to the national park has been going on for two decades, as pointed out by environmental activists with tacit support from all major political parties. But since June 2018, there was a brief halt in the activities as the Karnataka High Court imposed a ban. In July, 15 companies were given permission to resume mining operations in the area.

Italy nightclub stampede kills 6

December 8, 2018 by Nasheman

At least six people were killed and dozens injured following a stampede at a nightclub in Italy, authorities said.

The stampede happened early Saturday morning at the Lanterna Azzurra nightclub in the town of Corinaldo, about 141 km east of Florence. The club was hosting a concert by rapper Sfera Ebbasta and up to 1,000 people were thought to be inside, the BBC reported.

According to the country’s Civil Protection Agency, the panic began when someone in the club sprayed an “irritant substance”. Five of the victims were minors and the sixth victim was the mother of one of them, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.

Ancona police head Oreste Capocasa told public news service Rai News that 13 of the injured were in a “very serious condition” while another 60 had suffered more minor injuries.

Witnesses said people began panicking and running towards the exits after a noxious substance, possibly pepper spray, was sprayed in the crowd, Efe news reported.

A teenager who was at the concert told ANSA that the emergency exits were locked.

The police official said the casualties were sustained outside of the premises of the nightclub after barricades at the exit fell. Firefighters said that no victims were found inside the nightclub.

The injured were taken to hospitals and the most serious were transferred to the regional capital of Ancona.

The images released by firefighters on Twitter showed dozens of youngsters receiving medical treatment on the side of a road.

SC notice to ED on Mallya’s plea against proceedings to declare him fugitive

December 7, 2018 by Nasheman

The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Enforcement
Directorate (ED) on industrialist Vijay Mallya’s plea challenging the ongoing proceedings in a Mumbai court to declare him fugitive economic offender.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice S K Kaul sought the probe agency’s response on the plea against the ongoing trial before a special court
under the money laundering act.

The ED moved the special court seeking to declare the London based industrialist a fugitive economic offender under the Fugitive Economic Offender Act 2018. The apex
court issued notice on Mallya’s plea but refused to stay the proceedings before the Mumbai special court.

The Bombay High Court recently dismissed Mallya’s appeal. The industrialist has filed an appeal against the high court order.

Mumbai court to pronounce verdict on December 21

December 7, 2018 by Nasheman

special CBI court in Mumbai will give verdict in the case of alleged fake encounters of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, Kausar Bi and Tulsi Prajapati on December 21.

Sohrabuddin Sheikh, an alleged gangster, and his wife Kauser Bi were killed in an alleged fake encounter in 2005 by the Gujarat Police. His aide, Prajapati, was killed in another alleged fake encounter in 2006 in a joint operation by the Gujarat and the Rajasthan police.

The cases were initially probed by CID, Gujarat, before they were transferred to the CBI in 2010. They were then transferred to Mumbai in 2012, on the request of the CBI to ensure a fair trial.

Judge SJ Sharma, in the hearing, said he’d try his best to finish the proceeding and pronounce the verdict by December 21.

“If I am not able to do it by then, I will pronounce the verdict on December 24,” he added.

The final arguments in the case started on Monday.

According to the CBI, two encounters were staged by a joint team of Rajasthan and Gujarat police, between 2005 and 2006, in which both the named gangsters were shot dead.

There are 22 accused policemen and others in the case who have been facing trial. Out of the 120 witnesses brought in by the prosecution, 92 have been declared hostile.

The accused, who did not get any witnesses, tried to demolish CBI’s theory while in the box.

Of the 38 people initially charged by the CBI for the alleged fake encounters, 16 people including BJP president Amit Shah (who was the minister of state for home in Gujarat at the time) and all senior police officials, were discharged by the court.

CBI counsel BP Raju pointed out that they started the probe in the case after five years while the examination of witnesses began 12 years after the crime was committed, leading to a few gaps in the investigation.

Raju said that some of their important witnesses had turned hostile during the trial, hampering their case.

The judge, at that point, said, “I don’t blame the CID. I don’t blame the CBI. There are statements and witnessess. If they come here and say something else, it’s not your fault. You did your job.”

Seven minor boys sexual abuse from Teacher, Cops arrested

December 7, 2018 by Nasheman

The accused, a muezzin of a mosque, taught Arabic, Kannada and Hindi to students near his residence in southeast Bengaluru.
The Bengaluru police have arrested a 50-year-old muezzin of a mosque after he was alleged of sexually assaulting seven minor students, whom he tutored. The man, identified as Muneer Abbas Ali, was arrested on Thursday following complaints by parents and children at the Ashok Nagar Police Station in the city.

As per the police, Muneer hails from Gauribidanur, a village around 75 km from Bengaluru in Chikballapur district. Muneer taught Arabic, Kannada and Hindi to students near his residence at Anepalya in southeast Bengaluru. The crime began to unravel when a few students of Muneer refused to go for tuitions. When the parent of one of the boys questioned him, he revealed that Muneer had forced himself on him and sexually assaulted him.

“The family alerted the parents of the other boys in the class. As many as seven cases have been filed with the Ashok Nagar police since Wednesday. We suspect that many victims and their parents have not come forward fearing social stigma,” a police officer told media.

Muneer was arrested on Wednesday after the first boy reported the incident to the police and filed a complaint. Since the arrest, six other students have come forward with similar complaints of sexual assault.

“Initially, one boy went to the police on Wednesday. Then six more followed suit after we arrested Muneer,” said D Devaraja, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Division) to the Times of India.

The investigation into the incident found that the boys, who are class 11 and 12 students, learned Arabic, Hindi and Kannada under him at a prayer hall in Anepalya.

Muneer was charged under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). He has been remanded to five-day custody

The killing of a police officer by so-called cow vigilantes, belonging to far-right Hindu groups, has triggered outrage in India.

Local media reported on Wednesday that Yogesh Raj, the main suspect behind the violence, is absconding and remains to be arrested.

Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh was killed on Monday when villagers, many of them members of far-right Hindu groups, clashed with police in Uttar Pradesh state’s Bulandshahr district, about 100km from the Indian capital, New Delhi.

The villagers were protesting the alleged inability of police in Chingrawathi village to stop cow slaughtering, claiming that animal carcasses – including of cows – were found in the area. A police outpost was torched, while a young man, who was allegedly part of the mob, also died in the rioting.

The police officer’s killing following a cow-slaughter protest was the first-of-its-kind in India, where Muslims and low-caste Dalits have been frequently attacked over the issue in the past.

Accused releases video

Four men have been arrested so far in connection with the killing of Singh, while more than two dozen people are facing charges, including of rioting and destroying property. Seven Muslims, including two minors aged 11 and 12, were also charged by the police for cow slaughter.

A video purportedly showing the moments leading to the killing of the police officer appeared on Wednesday.

While police said they were still looking for Raj, from the Hindu right-wing group Bajrang Dal, reports on Wednesday said he had issued a video, claiming innocence and making contradictory statements over the incident.

Raj claimed he was not present at Chingrawathi, where the violent protests broke out over the alleged cow slaughter in the nearby Mahaw village of Bulandshahr district.

Raj, instead, claimed he was at a police station in Syana, a hamlet near Bulandshahr, where he said he had gone to register a report about the incident.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh police hinted at a “conspiracy” behind the violence since it occurred as tens of thousands of Muslims gathered for a religious event in Bulandshahr.

‘No word on police officer’s killing’

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a hardline Hindu monk known for his anti-Muslim remarks, called a meeting in state capital Lucknow on Tuesday.

At the time of the incident, Adityanath was touring the neighbouring state of Chhattisgarh to campaign for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of local assembly elections.

An investigation into allegations of cow slaughter was ordered by Adityanath, but local reports said he did not address Singh’s killing in the Lucknow meeting.

“The UP Chief Minister directed officials for a thorough probe in the incident. Instructions were also issued to take stringent action against people involved in cow slaughter,” a senior government official told reporters after the meeting.

Adityanath is expected to visit Singh’s family on Thursday, Indian news agency ANI reported.

A special investigation team has been formed by the Uttar Pradesh government to investigate the cause of the violence.

India: Village mourns death of man killed in cow-related lynching

Meanwhile, the slain officer’s family has also allegeda police conspiracy and demanded justice for his killing.

Singh was part of the team that initially investigated the infamous 2015 lynching of Mohammad Akhlaq, a 52-year-old resident of Bisara village, over allegations of cow slaughter in a district neighbouring Bulandshahr.

Cow vigilantism

India’s Hindu majority regards cows as holy and their slaughter is banned in most Indian states.

Hindu vigilantes often roam the roads in northern India to protect cows, frequently resulting in assaults against India’s Muslim population – some 14 percent of the country’s 1.3 billion people.

In recent years, there have been a string of deadly attacks on Muslims and low-caste Dalits over cattle slaughter and beef consumption.

According to data analytics site India Spend, almost 80 cases of cow-related violence were reported in India between 2012 and 2017.

At least 39 people have been killed in such violence since 2014 when the Hindu nationalist BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, came to power.

As India heads to crucial elections in the coming months, including the national elections due early next year, many fear such polarising issues will continue to be raised by the Hindu far-right to mobilise voters.

Heavy security in Ayodhya on Babri demolition’s 26th anniversary

December 6, 2018 by Nasheman

Heavy security in Ayodhya on Babri demolition's 26th anniversary
Heavy security deployment has been made in this temple town in Uttar Pradesh on the 26th anniversary of the razing of the 16th century Babri mosque by a Hindu mob.

Major roads have been barricaded and vigil has been stepped up around the disputed site. People visiting the temple of Ram Lalla, that was set up hurriedly on the ruins of the mosque, are being frisked thoroughly.

Checking of vehicles at all entry points has been enhanced. Special teams are monitoring entry of outsiders into the town.

Police teams are patrolling sensitive areas and prohibitory orders have been clamped barring the assembly of five or more people.

A district official told IANS that while the ‘darshan’ of Ram Lalla is allowed like all days, crowds have been asked not to raise any slogans.

Bomb disposal and dog squads have been spotted at major thoroughfares.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Iqbal Ansari, the lone Muslim litigant in the Ayodhya dispute, has said that he has received a threatening letter.

According to him, the letter writer has asked him to withdraw his claim in the court or else he will be eliminated. Police have increased security at Ansari’s house.

Delhi girl kills self, blames ‘tormentor’ teacher

December 6, 2018 by Nasheman

Relentless humiliation and rebuke from her science teacher over the last few months forced a Class 7 student here to commit suicide by hanging herself, police said on Thursday.

Daisy Rathore, 12, who hanged herself from a ceiling fan at her home on December 1, wrote the teacher’s name on her palms and hands and also left behind a note stating the reason for her extreme step.

“We are waiting for the autopsy report and recording statements of the victim’s friends and classmates. We will take strict action against the culprit,” Joint Commissioner of Police Madhup Tiwari told IANS.

“On her palms and hands she wrote that she did not want to go to school any more. She apologized to her mother and grandmother and said she was going to meet Lord Krishna,” he added.

Daisy Rathore was a student of Gyan Mandir Public School at Naraina Vihar.

She was last seen alive by her mother Kamal Rathore, before leaving for the Tis Hazari Court where she is an advocate.

Around 4 p.m., when the mother returned, she discovered her daughter’s lifeless body, a police officer said. A suicide note was also recovered.

Tiwari said: “On Wednesday, the victim’s mother visited the Inderpuri police station and told the officers that her daughter had on November 30 gone on a school trip. The next day some students of Class 6 linked the girl with a boy.

“When her teachers came to know about this, they allegedly rebuked her,” the officer added.

A resident of Inderpuri, the teenager had complained of relentless humiliation by her science teacher.

“My daughter complained that the teacher rebuked her every day. The same teacher rebuked and humiliated her on Friday for 10 minutes in the biology lab. She cried in the school bathroom after the episode,” Kamal Rathore told IANS.

“She had been insisting that I change her school but I did not know the extent of the crisis. I had not realised that she would commit suicide,” she said.

The mother broke down while speaking to reporters on Thursday.

“I was planning to take her out on her birthday on December 20. But she has left us. I should have changed her school,” rued Kamal Rathore, whose husband passed away some eight years ago.

Apparently, the tormented student had told some of her friends that she would commit suicide and would not meet them again.

The school management has set up an internal committee to probe the incident and will submit its report to the Delhi Police.

The Gyan Mandir Public School said in a statement: “We are fully cooperating with the investigation authority. As of now we are not at liberty to disclose any details which may jeopardize the police probe. We stand in solidarity with her family in this difficult time.”
