Bengaluru: Rahul Gandhi, Congress vice-president and grandson of Indira Gandhi inaugurated the Indira Canteens here today.

Daniel Craig confirms he’s returning as James Bond

August 16, 2017 by Nasheman

Los Angeles: British star Daniel Craig has finally announced that he will return as James Bond in the upcoming 25th instalment of the film franchise. However, this might be his last outing as the popular spy.

Craig made the announcement on American TV show “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Tuesday night, reports theguardian.com.

On the show, Craig was asked about whether he will play Bond for the fifth time after “Casino Royale” (2006), “Quantum of Solace” (2008), “Skyfall” (2012) and “Spectre” (2015).

“I have been quite cagey about it. I have been doing interviews all day and people have been asking me and I think I’ve been rather coy. But kind of felt like if I was going to speak the truth I should speak truth to you,” Craig said.

Colbert then asked: “We could use some good news here. Daniel Craig, will you return as James Bond?”

Craig then replied: “Yes”.

But, Craig then hinted that it would be his last outing as the famous fictional secret agent.

“I think this is it. I just want to go out on a high note and I can’t wait,” he said.

Muzaffarnagar: Three men arrested in June for allegedly slaughtering cows have been booked under the National Security Act (NSA), a senior district official said today.

According to District Magistrate G S Priyadarshi, Khalil, Bhura and Inam Qureshi were booked under NSA on the recommendation of the local police last evening.

Gorakhpur tragedy: Man who lost child files complaint against UP health minister

August 16, 2017 by Nasheman

Gorakhpur: A father who lost his 5-year-old child in the Gorakhpur’s Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College tragedy has held the UP government’s health minister, the medical education minister and the principal secretary (health) in Gorakhpur responsible for the death and has filed a police complaint against them.

Rajbar, a resident from Gopalganj in Bihar had admitted his child for treatment on August 10. In a letter he claimed that his child lost his life due to disruption of oxygen supply and blamed health minister Siddharth Nath Singh, Medical Education Minister Ashutoh Tandon and Principal Secretary Health Prashant Trivedi for the same.

He also alleged that post-mortem was not conducted after the child’s death.

The police sources said that the complaint is being examined and FIR has not been lodged yet.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government holds college principal, Rajiv Mishra’s negligence in performing his duty as the main reason for the tragedy.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath has assured to take stringent action against those found guilty. He has also appointed a team of top ministers to ascertain if the deaths were due to lack of oxygen supply.

SC orders NIA probe into Kerala girl’s conversion, marriage

August 16, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the conversion and marriage of a Hindu girl in Kerala in 2016.

Justice R.V. Ravindran, a retired judge of the apex court, will supervise the investigation.

Ordering the probe, a bench of Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud said before taking a final call, the court “shall require the presence of the girl”.

The bench said it would decide the issue after getting inputs from all, including the NIA, Kerala government and others.

The order came after Kapil Sibal, appearing for the petitioner, Shafeen Jahan, said the court should decide the issue after speaking to the girl.

The marriage of the converted girl with Jahan was nullified by the Kerala High Court.

Petitioner Jahan has moved the top court challenging the High Court’s decision.

The court order came as the bench was told that the NIA has in its preliminary probe found that there was a pattern as “entities” in two cases that have come to light were the same.

Senior counsel Indira Jaising told the bench that it was an inter-religious matter and the court must be careful.

Dalits thrashed for skinning dead cow near crematorium in Gujarat

August 15, 2017 by Nasheman

Ahmedabad: A Dalit man and his mother were thrashed allegedly by a group of 15 ‘upper caste’ men for skinning a dead cow near a crematorium at a village in Anand district of Gujarat, instead of the place where cattle are disposed of, police said today.

The incident took place almost a year after four Dalit men were allegedly beaten up by cow vigilantes at Una town in Gir-Somnath district, triggering an uproar across the country.

According to the FIR lodged yesterday in connection with the incident that took place in Kasor village of Sojitra taluka, around 15 men from Rajput community thrashed the 22- year-old man and his 45-year-old mother on Saturday night, while accusing them of defying the rules for skinning the dead cattle.

In his complaint lodged with the Sojitra police, the victim alleged that around 15 Rajput men, all from Kasor, stormed into his residence on Saturday night and started verbally abusing him and his mother by referring to their caste.

When he protested, the mob allegedly thrashed the duo and threatened them with dire consequences, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Khambhat division, D D Damor said.

“It all started on August 11, when the victim brought a dead cow for skinning from a nearby village. Instead of the designated place, he started skinning it near the crematorium. When some locals raised the issue with the sarpanch, he asked the victim to take the cow at the allotted place,” he said.

“Though the victim agreed to follow the rules next time, one of the accused entered into a heated altercation with him over the issue. Later, on August 12, around 15 men allegedly attacked the man and his mother outside their home,” the police officer said.

The Sojitra police lodged the FIR under IPC sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506(2) (criminal intimidation) and relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

No arrest has been made so far, Damor said. Both the victims have been provided round-the-clock security by the police, he added.

Modi’s I-day speech disappointing, nothing spectacular: Oppn

August 15, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech today drew flak from the opposition, with the Congress describing it as “most disappointing” and the Left downplaying it as “nothing spectacular”.

Senior Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma said Modi had not shown “sensitivity” to the Gorakhpur tragedy — the death of infants in a UP hospital — by comparing it with natural calamities and said the PM should have given an account of the “failure” of his government.

“The Prime Minister’s Independence Day address has been most disappointing. After three years, it was time for him to give an account of the failure of his government in fulfilling its promises to the people, especially the youth, farmers and weaker sections,” he told reporters here.

On Modi’s call for embracing strife-hit Kashmiris, Sharma said, “We have never stopped him from embracing Kashmiris. He should talk to all sections and create a national consensus as well as in Kashmir.”

CPI national secretary D Raja said there was “nothing spectacular” in Modi’s speech and alleged he lacked conviction when he talked about embracing Kashmiris.

“They (the government) believe in a military solution to the dispute but he talks about embracing Kashmiris. There is no conviction in what he said,” Raja said.

National Conference working president Omar Abdullah in a Tweet alluded to Modi’s remark that the Kashmir issue would not be resolved by abuse and bullets.

“I guess that covers both sides – terrorists and security forces,” he said. While referring to the Gorakhpur deaths, Sharma said Modi did not reflect the gravity of the situation.

“He has in a very trivial manner equated the Gorakhpur tragedy to national calamities,” the Congress leader said. On demonetisation, Abdullah tweeted, “This is welcome news”. But he took a dig at the government with, “It also means RBI has finished counting demonetised notes to arrive at this firm figure of 3 lakh crores. Excellent.”

Referring to Modi’s assertion that violence in the name of faith was “not acceptable”, Raja said the PM should first ask RSS-BJP cadres to “stop engaging in communal attacks”. “What the prime minister said should be taken seriously by the RSS-BJP themselves,” the CPI leader said.

Sharma wondered what had stopped the prime minister or home minister from acting against those who had “created an atmosphere of fear and violence due to which people are feeling insecure”.

“Why has action not been taken against such individuals or organisations, when they have their government in the Centre and states? Why have they not been arrested,” he asked.

Raja also hit out Modi for not talking about jobs generated for the country’s youth. Sharma said Modi had promised to create 2 crore jobs every year but was not talking about employment any more.

He said while the prime minister was taking the credit for GST and the fight against black money, he should have shown “some grace and humility” to acknowledge the “constructive cooperation” of the opposition in ushering in the new tax regime.

“We did not expect the prime minister while addressing the country to completely ignore and then expect cooperation and endorsement from the opposition. His fight against black money was a sham and remains a sham,” he said, accusing the government of promoting crony capitalism.

“Why has this government not given an account of how much black money there is in the money that has come back to the RBI vaults,” he asked.

Referring to the fight against corruption, he said, “The country and we have to ask the prime minister why in three years the Lokpal has not been appointed.”

“If he believes in his words, then he has to be accountable for the non-appointment of the lokpal, for the dilution of anti-corruption laws and the RTI,” he said.

The prime minister has “true to his characteristic style” been “disrespectful” to the memory of his predecessors, he said.

“Modi did not mention those who fought for and gave freedom to this country, who built the foundations of modern and self-reliant India,” Sharma said.

10,000 witnessed Independence Day celebration in Bengaluru

August 15, 2017 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: 71st Independence Day celebration was held at the Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Grounds here today.

Karnataka State Chief Minister Siddaramaiah unfurled the tricolour and paid homage to soldiers who laid down their lives fighting the enemy and protecting the nation.

Addressing the gathering he said “Today we are witnessing the phenomena of communalism and casteism raising their ugly head all around, joined by fascist forces. Our concept of development is based on inclusiveness that aims to usher in improved level of standard of living.”

He further stated “The local language should get first priority in the state, and the imposition of some other language is unacceptable even in the constitution.”

“First priority should be given for the regional language in the state, and next comes all the others languages. When there is a language declared as official, it’s even unconstitutional to impose any other language in the state.” he added.

The BBMP, in association with the office of Deputy Commissioner (Bengaluru Urban) and the Bengaluru city police made elaborate security arrangements for the grand event.

Seating arrangements were made to accommodate 10,000 people, of which 4,000 were been reserved for the public.

Over 2,700 school children participated in the cultural programmes. Kikkeri Krishnamurthy and team sang the Nadageetha and Raithageethe.
