ramya

New Delhi: The Congress has appointed popular Kannada actor and former MP Ramya as head of its social media team, party sources said on Thursday.

“Ramya has taken charge as the head of the party’s social media team,” a source told IANS.

She takes over from Haryana’s Rohtak MP Deepender Hooda, who handled the social media team since 2012.

Ramya, 34, had joined the Congress in 2012. She has served as Member of Parliament from Mandya.

In 2016, Ramya had stirred controversy after she in a tweet said: “Pakistan is a good country, not hell. Parrikar’s comments (that going to Pakistan or hell is the same thing) are not true.”

Outrage in Kerala as SBI levies charges on ATM withdrawals

May 11, 2017 by Nasheman

atm

Thiruvananthapuram: A public outcry erupted in Kerala after the State Bank of India (SBI) announced that charges would be levied on all cash withdrawals from its ATMs from June onward.

The bank’s new order states that every time a SBI customer withdraws cash from an ATM a charge of Rs 25 would be levied and charges would also be levied for exchange of old and sullied notes above Rs 5,000.

“This is outrageous and the central government is cheating the people. Ever since the demonetisation began, the Centre has been bullying people. This is going to be taken up in and out of parliament very strongly,” said CPI-M Lok Sabha member M.B. Rajesh.

Popular film personality Shobi Thilakan called it an “anti-people policy of the Centre”.

“The SBI has turned out to be worse than the local money lenders and is out to fleece the common man. There has to be a public outcry against this new policy,” said Thilakan.

Customers spotted in front of an SBI ATM here also expressed anger.

“The Centre has cheated people and it has to be seen from the perspective that they did this very tactfully because Kerala’s own bank (State Bank of Travancore) has been merged with the SBI. The people who banked with SBT have now become SBI customers and now they are at the receiving end,” said a retired teacher, after withdrawing money from the ATM.

Another angry SBI customer from Kottayam said barring the lone Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator in the 141 member Kerala assembly, all others strongly opposed the merger and passed a resolution to this effect.

“This was bound to happen and these are measures to pick the pockets poor people. We wish to know what the state BJP leaders have to say on this. There should be mass protest in Kerala against the SBI,” said the angry SBI account holder.

Of the 880 SBT branches in Kerala, more than 400 were closed and at present there are over 800 SBI branches in the state.

Triple talaq hearing: SC says won’t deliberate on polygamy issue

May 11, 2017 by Nasheman

Supreme Court

New Delhi: A five-judge Constitution bench of Supreme Court on Thursday commenced hearing on a plea that the triple talaq and nikah halala violated Muslim women’s rights to equality and dignity.

As the hearing began, the SC cleared that it would examine whether the practice of triple talaq among Muslims is fundamental to their religion.

“We will also examine whether triple talaq is part of the enforceable fundamental right,” added the SC.

The Constitution bench comprising Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, Justice Kurian Joseph, Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice S Abdul Nazeer are likely to hear the matter for seven days. Interestingly, the members of the bench are from different religious communities including Sikh, Christian, Parsee, Hindu, and Muslim.

The SC, however, said the issue of the practice of polygamy among Muslims may not be part of its deliberations as this aspect is not related to triple talaq.

The apex court made it clear that each side will get two days each for canvassing their arguments on the two questions formulated by the bench and one day will be given for the rebuttal.

The apex court also made it clear that it would stop any counsel who will repeat the arguments.

“Each side can argue whatever they want but there should not be any repetition. They will only focus on the validity of triple talaq,” the bench said.

The hearing holds importance as the Allahabad High Court, in its verdict pronounced in the last week of April, had held the practice of triple talaq as unilateral and bad in law.

The High Court verdict had come while dismissing a petition filed by one Aaqil Jamil whose wife had filed a criminal complaint against him alleging that he had tortured her for dowry and when his demands were not met, he gave her triple talaq.

The copy of High Court verdict was made available only on Tuesday.

Influential Muslim organisations like the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) have opposed court’s adjudication of these matters, maintaining these practices stemmed from the Holy Quran and were not justiciable.

The Muslim women who have filed the petitions have challenged the practice of triple talaq in which the husband, quite often, pronounces talaq thrice in one go, sometimes even by phone or text message.

On other hand, nikah halala is a practice intended to curb the incidence of divorce under which a man cannot remarry his former wife without her having to go through the process of marrying someone else, consummating it, getting divorced, observing the separation period called ‘Iddat’ and then coming back to him again.

On March 27, the AIMPLB had told the apex court that pleas challenging such practices among Muslims were not maintainable as the issues fell outside the realm of judiciary.

The Board had also said the validity of the Mohammedan Law, founded essentially in the Holy Quran and sources based on it, cannot be tested on the particular provisions of the Constitution.

It had said there was a need for “judicial restraint” before going into the constitutional interpretation of these unless such an exercise becomes unavoidable.

The Ministry of Law and Justice, in its affidavit, had referred to constitutional principles like gender equality, secularism, international covenants, religious practices and marital law prevalent in various Islamic countries to drive home the point that the practice of triple talaq and polygamy needed to be adjudicated upon afresh by the apex court.
The Centre had on October 7 last opposed in the Supreme Court the practice of triple talaq, nikah halala, and polygamy among Muslims and favoured a relook on grounds like gender equality and secularism.

Rajasthan: Wall of marriage hall collapses in Bharatpur, 24 dead; owner booked

May 11, 2017 by Nasheman

Rajasthan

Jaipur: In a tragic incident, 24 people, including four children, were killed and 30 injured when a wall of a marriage hall collapsed during a heavy storm in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan on Wednesday night.

The dead included eight women and four children, officials said.

While 22 people died instantly when the wall near which they had taken shelter collapsed due to a thunderstorm, two others died later in the night, police and district officials said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressed pain at the loss of lives in the incident and announced Rs 2 lakh each to the kin of the deceased. The PM also announced Rs 50,000 for those seriously injured.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje is likely to visit Bharatpur.

Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police Anil Tank said the marriage homeowner was today booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

He said a survey of all the marriage homes and gardens in Bharatpur will be conducted to review safety and security measures.

District Magistrate NK Gupta said that the incident, which occurred in Annapurna Marriage Home located on Sewar road, was triggered due to a thunderstorm and rainfall in the district.

A marriage function was going on in the hall when the storm hit the area, police said.

People took shelter under a shed attached to a wall which collapsed suddenly, Inspector General of Police Alok Vashishtha told PTI.

He said the entire structure of the wall and the shed collapsed and they got trapped.

Superintendent of Police Anil Tank said the wall was nearly 90-feet long and 12-13 feet in height.

Several food stalls were set up adjoining the wall. A tin shed was also attached to a portion of the wall.

“The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals immediately and treatment was administered. One injured has been referred to SMS Hospital in Jaipur,’ he said.

The weather suddenly changed and heavy winds started blowing last night which led to the incident at Sewar Road.

The bodies have been shifted to a mortuary and post-mortem will be conducted today, police sources said.

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje condoled the deaths and gave necessary instructions to officers concerned for proper treatment of the injured.

Jamiat’s Mahmood Madani group meets Narendra Modi

May 10, 2017 by Nasheman

Mahmood Madani

New Delhi: A delegation of Jamiat Ulama-e Hind (Mahmood Madani group) met the Prime Minister Narendra Modi today at the Prime Minister’s official residence. The large delegation included some persons from outside Jamiat also like Prof. Akhtarul Wasey (VC, Maulana Azad University, Jodhpur), Dr. Zahir I. Kazi (President of Anjuman-i-Islam, Mumbai and P. A. Inamdar (Chairman, Azam Campus, Pune).

According to a press release issued by the Jamiat, the meeting lasted for about two hours. Later, talking to media, Mahmood Madani, General Secretary of his group of Jamiat, described the meeting as “satisfactory and positive”. He said, “the PM heard us passionately and agreed with our concerns.” Madani further said, “Our meeting with the PM was mainly for opening the door of mutual communication and closer understanding that would lead to further opportunities and all of us will be able to play our role in the development of our country.” Madani added that he asked the Prime Minister to create a mechanism for further dialogue between the PM and the Indian Muslim community.

This was the first such high-level meeting of leaders of the Indian Muslim community with Prime Minister Narendra Modi who came to power three years ago but was shunned until now by the Muslim community. A few days earlier Mahmood Madani group had said that it has asked for time to meet the PM. Soon after Mr. Modi’s coming to power, at least three high-level meetings were held by Muslim community leaders including one called by Maulana Mahmood Madani himself in his Masjid Abdun Nabi office in Delhi, in which it was decided unanimously that no Muslim group will meet Mr Narendra Modi who was held responsible not only for Gujarat 2002 riots, fake encounters but also for creating in the country an atmosphere of hate against the Muslim community. The leaders had decided that should a need arise to meet the PM, it should be a joint delegation that will go to meet him. Today’s delegation did not include any leader of leading Indian Muslim organizations like Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat, Jamaat-e Islami Hind and Markazi Jamiat Ahl-e Hadees or institutions like Muslim Personal Law Board or Darul Uloom Deoband. By meeting the PM today with only a Jamiat delegation, Mahmood Madani group has broken the Muslim ranks.

Following is the full unedited text of the press release issued Jamiat Ulama-e Hind after this meeting:

New Delhi, May 09

Mr. Narendra Modi
Hon’ble Prime Minister of India
PMO, New Delhi
Delegation of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind consisting of a galaxy of religious scholars, Educationists and Social leaders led by Maulana Qari Mohammad Usman Mansurpuri, President Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind met Prime Minister Narender Modi today at his residence in New Delhi. The delegation discussed with the PM several issues including the current communal situation of the country.

Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind president Maulana Qari Usman and its General secretary Maulana Mahmood Madani while speaking to the media after conclusion of the meeting that continued for about two hours, said that the meeting was satisfactory and positive. Maulana Mahmood Madani said the PM heard us passionately and agreed with our concerns. He said, PM also appreciated our stand that the divorce was internal issue of the Muslim community and the community itself should take reformative steps. Our meeting with the PM was mainly for opening the door of mutual communication and closer understanding that would lead to further opportunities and all of us will be able to play our role in the development of our country. We requested from Honorable PM to create mechanism for access to him or his appointee for continuing dialogue and closer understanding so that Muslim community is assured of its role and share in the development of our country. Maulana Madani said PM was apprehensive about growing hatred in the name of cow protection and he assured us that he would not let this trend prosper.

On this occasion, the delegation submitted a memorandum which text is hereunder.

To the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India

We are very grateful to you that you granted this opportunity to the delegation of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind consisting of a galaxy of religious scholars, Educationists and Social leaders led by Maulana Qari Mohammad Usman Mansurpuri, President Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind to meet their Prime Minister.

The basic objective of the meeting is to establish closer interaction between the Government and the Muslim Community on issues of larger national interest which has been highlighted by the Honorable Prime Minister himself through the slogans like “Sab ka Sath Sab ka Vikas and Meri Sarkar Sabki Sarkar’’. We are of the opinion that most important national issues can be solved through mutual dialogue.

Supremacy of Rule of Law is must for the security, integrity and development of our country. No one is above the law. It must be administered with total impartiality and equality. Your recent reprimand to private groups taking law in their hands and launching murderous attacks for salvaging cows has sent the correct message but much has to be done by law enforcing agencies and the state administration. The recent incidents of manslaughter on the pretext of cow slaughter have sent shock waves of terror and fear through Muslim, Dalit and the weakest sections of the society. We are afraid that the fear and despondence if unchecked could prove highly counterproductive.

There is no doubt that terrorism, fueled and perpetuated by enemy forces tops our agenda with reference to our national security, peace and stability. There have been attempts to communalise even this issue. We have always condemned such attempt and consistently campaigned at the national level in cooperation with all communities against terrorism as well as religious bigotry and extremism. We are happy to note that in the context of tarnishing the image of Islam and Muslim globally you made the Indian Muslim communities hold their head high by projecting Indian Muslim community’s ideology of peaceful Islam with reference to India’s tradition of Islamic Sufism and their aversion to extremist ideology. We appreciate this on your part and on our part reiterate our commitment to enable India lead counter terrorism campaign by example. However, for controlling the menace of terrorism, the law must be enforced effectively with total impartiality. Every caution should be exercised to ensure that no innocent person is victimized.

Muslim community has issues and grievances just like any other community which have to be dealt with as per the exigency but this shouldn’t undermine their aspiration to be equal stake holder. These issues should be deliberated upon and solved amicably so that none of the communities have a feeling of discrimination on the basis of religion and they feel their duty and share in the country’s development equally which tallies with identity of our beloved country.

The delegation requests the Honorable PM to create mechanism for access to him or his appointee for continuing dialogue and closer understanding so that Muslim community is assured of its role and share in the development of our country.

We once again, thank you and hope that door of mutual communication and closer understanding that has been opened today, will lead to further opportunities and all of us will be able to play our role in the development of our country.

With highest regards

Yours sincerely

Mohammad Usman Mansoorpuri
President

HD Kumaraswamy Slaps JDS Party Worker in Mysuru

May 10, 2017 by Nasheman

Kumaraswamy

Mysuru: According to the reports, Janata Dal Secular state unit party president HD Kumaraswamy (HDK) slapped one of his party workers here in Mysuru after a booth level meeting when the youths pressured HDK to issue party ticket to Harish Gowda, son of sitting JDS MLA GT Deve Gowda on Wednesday afternoon.

A booth level meeting was organised in the city to prepare a strategy for the upcoming state assembly elections. HDK tried his best to answer their queries on the spot, however, one of the party activists physically touched HDK and tried to pull him back which made him loose his patience and slap the youth.

There are a number of reasons to what have forced Harish Gowda supporters to provoke HDK, as many of the party leaders are trying to get party ticket from Hunsur constituency in the next assembly elections. Mishra on hunger strike, seeks AAP leaders’ foreign trip details

May 10, 2017 by Nasheman

kapil Mishra

New Delhi: Sacked Delhi minister Kapil Mishra on Wednesday began an indefinite hunger strike at his home here and threatened not to eat anything till Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal “reveals” who funded foreign trips of five AAP leaders in the last two years.

In an open letter to Kejriwal, Mishra, suspended from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) after he alleged corruption by the Chief Minister, said he was on a “satyagraha” at his home.

Mishra also alleged that he was getting “life threats from international numbers,”

“I got the call from an international number, but I didn’t respond to that, then I received a death threat on a Whatsapp message,” he said.

Mishra said he was fasting “all alone in one corner of my house” and would not end his protest till Kejriwal made public the details of foreign trips of the Chief Minister’s “five friends — Sanjay Singh, Ashish Khetan, Satyendar Jain, Raghav Chadhha and Durgesh Pathak”.

He said he “won’t eat anything, will only drink water”.

Mishra said he knew Kejriwal was not bothered about his life and would persist with his protest till it was known “where they all visited, why they went, what did they do (during foreign trips) and from whose money did they do all these things”.

“Many people have said the amount of the hawala money, discrepancies in donations, cash transactions would be revealed in minutes if these information are made public.”

Mishra on Tuesday filed a graft complaint with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against Kejriwal, his relatives and other AAP leaders. Mishra was earlier removed as Delhi’s Water Minister on Saturday.
