Think of damage to bilateral ties before executing Jadhav: Sushma to Pak

April 11, 2017 by Nasheman

Sushma Swaraj

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday said that former Indian Naval officer Kulbhushan Jadhav, who was given a death sentence by a Pakistani military court, is a victim of Pakistan’s attempts to deflect attention from the country sponsoring terrorism.

“There is no evidence of wrongdoing by Jadhav. If anything, he is the victim of a plan that seeks to cast aspersions on India to deflect international attention from Pakistan’s well-known record of sponsoring and supporting terrorism,” Swaraj said in an identical statement in both Houses of Parliament.

“Under these circumstances, we have no choice but to regard the sentence, if carried out, as an act of pre-meditated murder,” she said, adding that the sentence by the Pakistani Military Court was based on “concocted charges”.

“Let me state clearly that the government and the people of India would view very seriously the possibility that an innocent Indian citizen is facing death sentence in Pakistan without due process and in violation of basic norms of law, justice and international relations,” she warned.

“I would caution the Pakistan government to consider the consequences for our bilateral relationship if they proceed on this matter,” Swaraj said categorically in a hard-worded statement.

She said the process adopted by the Pakistani military court to award the death sentence “tells us a lot about the farcical nature of the alleged proceedings which have led to indefensible verdict against an innocent kidnapped Indian.”

Replying to a suggestion by Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, Swaraj said the government will not only ensure that Jadhav is provided with the best of lawyers in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, but will take up it with the President of Pakistan also.

“Whatever is necessary, we will do,” she said, adding that Jadhav was “not only the son of his parents, but is the son of India.”

Swaraj said Jadhav was doing business in Iran and was kidnapped and taken to Pakistan. “The exact circumstances are unclear and can only be ascertained if we have consular access to him”, which has been denied by the Pakistani authorities.

“It is extraordinary that yesterday, a decision is suddenly announced awarding a death sentence in this case when previous exchanges with India iteslf underlines the insufficiency of evidence,” the Minister said.

Earlier in the Lok Sabha, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the government will do everything possible to get justice for Jadhav.

While condemning the action, Singh said that Pakistan had ignored all norms of law and justice.

“The government strongly condemns it. All norms of law and justice were ignored. I want to assure the House that the government will do everything possible to get justice for Jadhav. He will get justice,” he said.

April 11, 2017 by Nasheman

Rana Ayyub

Dubai: A UAE-based company has sacked an Indian employee here for abusing a fellow Indian on the social media and for posting offensive posts against Islam on Facebook, a media report said.

Rana Ayyub, a well-known investigative journalist based in New Delhi, exposed the vulgar messages on Twitter sent to her by the man, following which some of her followers reported the matter to the management of the UAE company where the Indian worked.

The 31-year-old employee from Kerala was identified as B.B. He joined Alpha Paint in Dubai, a sister company of National Paints in Sharjah, in 2015, the Gulf News reported on Monday.

Ayyub posted a screenshot of the message one day last week, saying: “Just a sample of the filth I receive on my Facebook page. Time to name and shame this pervert.”

Under the United Arab Emirates (UAE) cybercrime law, any form of misuse of a computer, smart device or an electronic network could fetch the violator, if found guilty, a lengthy jail term and/or a heavy fine.

The company said it terminated the expat’s contract and will pay for his tickets and his rights according to the UAE labour law.

The man’s visa was cancelled on Monday and he was set to be deported, said the daily.

Ayyub told Gulf News that she will be filing a police case against the accused in New Delhi.

Govt comes under Oppn fire over Tarun Vijay’s racist remarks

April 10, 2017 by Nasheman

tarun-vijay

New Delhi: The Opposition in the Lok Sabha today sought stringent action against BJP leader Tarun Vijay for his purported racial remarks, even as the government assured there would be no discrimination based on caste or colour.

Seeking to soothe the frayed nerves, senior Union Ministers Rajnath Singh and Ananth Kumar said the individual has already apologised and the country is secular. With noisy protests by Opposition members who also demanded lodging of an FIR against him on the issue, the House proceedings were adjourned thrice — once during the Question Hour and twice during the Zero Hour.

Attacking the ruling party over the remarks, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge wondered whether the people from South India were not Indian citizens. “I want to know whether we are Indians or not… Are we not citizens (of India),” Kharge said during Zero Hour.

Wanting to know what action would be taken against Vijay who is “not an ordinary person”, the Congress leader said he was a former Rajya Sabha member and has also written many books on BJP philosophy.

His remarks are a “threat” to the unity of the country and “you want to divide this country”, Kharge said, adding that if such things go on, then states would start asserting for independence.

This “shows your mentality”, he said as he sought to compare them to the likes of Hitler and condemned the remarks. “FIR should be lodged against him (Tarun Vijay). He has talked about breaking the nation. It is anti-national,” Kharge said.

Asserting that “Bharat is a secular country,” Singh in response said there would be no discrimination based on caste, creed, colour and religion. “The individual has already said that his remarks are indefensible”, Singh said quoting Vijay.

Since the individual has already apologised, there is no need to raise any more questions about it, the Home Minister said, adding he would not mention the name. As the protests continued even after Singh’s statement, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said “this (House) is not a court.”

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar sought to soothe the agitating members saying, “We are all one. The country is one”. After the House met again at 1245 hours, Kumar said the Home Minister has already given the reply and an apology has been tendered by Vijay.

BJP is of the view that “we all are Indians. There is no difference on the basis of colour. We all are one. Congress should not create differences. We are all together”. “Khargeji please don’t try to create differences… One India. Great India,” he emphasised.

Earlier during Question Hour, Kumar urged the Opposition to allow Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to respond to the question posed to her in Question Hour, saying she was a minister “from the South”. Dissatisfied with the Minister’s response, Opposition members, including from the Congress and the Left, trooped into the Well shouting slogans.

During Question Hour also, the Opposition members raised slogans in the Well. The Opposition members were heard shouting, ‘Modi sarkar jawab do-jawab do (Modi government should respond)’, ‘Desh ka vibhajan nahin chalega (Won’t allow division of country)’ and ‘We want FIR (against Vijay)’.

With the din continuing during the Zero Hour, the Speaker adjourned the proceedings for over 20 minutes till 1245 hours. The House was again adjourned till 1350 hours as the protests continued. There was also a brief adjournment of the House over the issue for 10 minutes till 1120 hours during the Question Hour.

Bangladesh PM Hasina embarks on four-day India visit

April 7, 2017 by Nasheman

Sheikh Hasina

Dhaka: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Friday embarked on a four-day visit to India which will see signing of at least 25 bilateral agreements including in key areas of civil nuclear cooperation and defence.

During her visit, which comes after a gap of seven years, Hasina will hold wide-ranging talks with her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi Saturday during which India is also set to announce a line of credit of USD 500 million to Bangladesh for military supplies.

“The upcoming visit is expected to further expand the cordial and cooperative relationship between India and Bangladesh and build on the strong ties of friendship and trust between the two leaders,” a joint statement issued by the two countries said earlier.

Hasina will also call on President Pranab Mukherjee and meet opposition leader Sonia Gandhi. She will visit Ajmer on Sunday and will meet Indian business leaders on Monday.

She will also join a function at Manekshaw Centre to honour Indian Armed Forces members who embraced martyrdom in Bangladesh’s War of Liberation in 1971.

Diplomatic quarters of both sides expected that the reciprocal visit of the Bangladesh premier would take the Dhaka-New Delhi “historic relations” to a new height unveiling newer dimensions of cooperation in various sectors including trade and commerce, economy and connectivity.

It will be Hasina’s first bilateral visit to India in her current term as prime minister.

Ramping up cooperation in defence and security will be a major focus area of the talks between Modi and Hasina and apart from an MoU to provide USD 500 million credit, another pact is likely to be inked to formalise regular defence engagements.

Issues like combating terrorism, containing radicalism and enhancing security cooperation between the two countries are likely to figure prominently besides stalemate over the Teesta pact during talks between Modi and Hasina.

Liberation War Affairs minister AKM Mozammel Haque, Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud, Law Minister Anisul Haque, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, the Premier’s Economic Affairs Advisor Moshiour Rahman and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam are accompanying Hasina for the visit.

TN’s bypoll campaigning sees new low: Jaya’s dummy body paraded in coffin

April 7, 2017 by Nasheman

Jayalalithaa

Chennai: The fight for the legacy of the late Chief Minister and AIADMK General Secretary J.Jayalalithaa reached a new low on Thursday with the O. Panneerselvam faction seeking votes for their candidate with the dummy body of Jayalalithaa laid inside a coffin.

The coffin was covered with the National Flag.

Though it is said former Minister for Eduction P. Pandiarajan was against such a campaign, he nevertheless was seen standing with folded hands in a vehicle in which the dummy body and the coffin were kept.

The police removed the dummy body and the coffin and warned the party workers against such future moves.

Even members of Panneerselvam faction were opposed to such a stunt and termed it as a result of over-enthusiastic cadres.

The bypoll was necessitated by the death of Jayalalithaa last December.
