Sheila Dikhsit refuses to become CM face for 2017 UP elections

June 27, 2016 by Nasheman

Sheila Dikhsit

New Delhi: Former Delhi chief minister and Congress stalwart Sheila Dikshit has reportedly turned down the offer to become the chief ministerial candidate of the grand old party in the high voltage 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

According to a NDTV report, poll strategist Prashant Kishor, who has been roped by the Congress to boost its fortunes in the Hindi heartland ahead of next year’s Assembly elections, wanted a Brahmin face to be projected as the face of the party.

The speculations about Dikshit being appointed as the CM candidate emerged after the Congress stalwart met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi on July 16.

The chorus for bringing Priyanka Gandhi into active politics to revive Congress’ fortunes in Uttar Pradesh has also been increasing these days.

Recently reports had claimed that around 600 block presidents of the grand old party had urged master strategist Prashant Kishor to bring Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s daughter into the political arena.

Congress, which once used to win almost all the seats in the cow belt state, has been performing very poorly in the last two decades.

Notably, the BJP had won on 71 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in 2014. Congress won two, Samajwadi Party five and Mayawati’s Bhaujan Samaj Party wasn’t able to open its account.

Key players in the state – Bharatiya Janata Party led by PM Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, Samajwadi Party led by Mulayam Singh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party led by Mayawati – are personality driven and have their strong vote bases. Meanwhile, Congress, which has been out of power in the state for nearly three decades, suffers from a leadership crisis.

Woman techie found murdered at railway station in Chennai

June 24, 2016 by Nasheman

Crime-against-Women

Chennai: A 24-year-old woman employee of an IT firm was today found murdered at a city railway station. S Swathi, employed with software giant Infosys, was found dead with cut injuries on her face and neck around 6.30 am on a platform in Nungambakkam railway station, police said.

The incident is believed to have taken place when Swathi, a resident of Choolaimedu near the station, was waiting to board a suburban train to reach her office as per her routine, they said.

It caused a flutter in the neighbourhood and the station, which usually gets busy around 7 am.

The body had been retrieved and sent for postmortem, police said, adding various angles were being probed to find out the assailant and also ascertain the motive behind the killing.

Infosys described the incident as “unfortunate” and said it was cooperating with investigating officials.

“We are saddened by the unfortunate incident that has led to the demise of our employee in Chennai. We are working with the local authorities as they investigate the matter and will continue to provide our co-operation and support,” it said in a statement.

“Our deepest sympathies and prayers are with the family of the deceased. Infosys will provide all the necessary support to the family in their hour of grief,” it further said.

The victim was employed with Infosys’ branch at Mahindra World City at Singaperumalkoil on the city outskirts.

‘Brexit to impact Indian IT industry in short-term’

June 24, 2016 by Nasheman

Infosys-Puneinf

Bengaluru: Britain exiting the European Union (Brexit) would impact the Indian IT industry in the short-term owing to volatility in the exchange rate, uncertainty and terms of exit, a top industry representative said on Friday.

“The impact of Brexit will certainly be negative in the short-term on account of volatility in the exchange rates, uncertainty in the markets and the terms on which Britain will leave the Eu,” Nasscom President R. Chandrashekhar said.

Britons voted 51.9 per cent for Brexit against 48.1 per cent of ‘Remain’ vote in a historic referendum on Thursday.

The referendum turnout was 71.8 per cent — with more than 30 million people voting. This was the highest turnout at a British poll since 1992.

Terming the Brexit as a phase of uncertainty in the near term, the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) executive said the historic move was also a mix of challenges and opportunities in the longer term.

“Europe is of prime importance for India, as it is not only the second largest market for our industry, but also contributes nearly 30 per cent of software export revenue, which is equivalent to $100 billion,” Chandrashekhar asserted.

Noting that Britain had been a gateway for the Indian industry’s investment across the EU over the decades, Chandrashekhar said a decline in value of British currency (pound sterling) would render contracts losing propositions unless they were renegotiated.

“The uncertainty surrounding protracted negotiations on the terms of exit and/or future engagement with EU could impact decision-making for large projects,” the Nasscom president pointed out.

The exit may also lead to Indian outsourcing firms setting up separate offices or operations for EU and divestment from Britain.

Mobility of skilled labour between Britain and the EU will also be affected, while changes in the financial system and banks would have a bearing due to currency impact.

“Hence we urge policy makers in Brussels and London to provide greater clarity and guidance on the next steps so as to ensure our businesses have the clarity to stay invested in Britain,” said Chandrashekhar.

According to indications, British policy makers are committed to minimise the possible negative impact of the referendum to quit the EU.

The historic development will also unleash opportunities as about 800 Indian firms, employing 110,000 people across the country, have a deeper partnership with Britain.

“In the long term, however, Brexit could lead to strengthening of Indo-British economic relationship, as Britain seeks to compensate for loss of preferential access to EU markets,” Chandrashekhar affirmed.

With Britain less dependent on intra-EU immigration into its country, it could become more open to high-skilled immigration from other non-EU countries, including India.

“Britain will be under no obligation to adopt restrictive EU data localisation norms, which it does not subscribe to in their entirety. All these factors could benefit our bilateral economic relations,” the former telecom secretary added.

Shiv Sena asks Modi if Yoga will relieve pain of inflation

June 23, 2016 by Nasheman

yoga-school-india

Mumbai: In yet another salvo at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shiv Sena today said bringing yoga to the centre stage of the world was a praise-worthy effort, but will practising the ancient form of exercise relieve people of the pain of inflation.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi deserves praise for making 130 countries perform yoga. The world bends if somebody makes it do so. Through yoga, Modi made 130 nations lay on the ground.

“What is now needed is to make Pakistan lie down forever. This can only happen with the help of weapons. Pakistan deserves a permanent ‘Shavaasan’ (a yoga position that involves lying down like a corpse),” the Sena said in an editorial in its mouthpiece ‘Saamana’.

It said that while chief ministers of non-BJP states may oppose Modi, yoga is a science that should not be opposed.

“A lot can be achieved through yoga. But, in daily life, can yoga help in relieving the pains of high inflation and corruption? It would be good if a clarification is given on this as well,” it said.

The United Nations had last year declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.

Lakhs of people across India and abroad stretched themselves in various postures to mark the second International Yoga Day as the Prime Minister maintained that yoga is not a religious activity.

Sena, which is part of the BJP-led governments in Maharashtra and at the Centre, has been critical of BJP and the Modi government following strain in their ties since their alliance in Maharashtra collapsed ahead of the October 2014 Assembly polls due to problems over seat-sharing.

Though they did come together after the election, Sena has been reduced to a junior partner and has lost no opportunity to hit out at BJP leaders.

Recently, Sena had been critical of Modi’s remarks abroad about India being plagued by corruption, saying they “maligned the nation’s image”, and questioned if scams in BJP-ruled Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat can be attributed to others.

Modi meets Xi, seeks support for India’s NSG bid

June 23, 2016 by Nasheman

Narendra_Modi

Tashkent: As India makes a strong bid for membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today met Chinese President Xi Jinping and is understood to have sought China’s support for it, seen as very crucial to take forward the process.

The outcome of the meeting between Modi and Xi here will determine proceedings at the two-day plenary meeting of the atomic trading club which began in Seoul today, sources said.

Though some other countries like Turkey, New Zealand and South Africa have reservations over India’s membership to the 48-nation grouping, India feels their opposition will fizzle out once China takes a favourable position towards New Delhi.

China’s position on India’s NSG bid is very crucial, sources said.
Modi arrived here today on a two-day visit to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Earlier, Pakistan President Mamnoon Hussain met Xi on the sidelines of the summit and thanked China for supporting Pakistan’s case for NSG membership.

Giving clear indication of its opposition to India’s NSG bid, China yesterday had underlined the differences within NSG members, saying “parties are yet to see eye-to-eye on this issue”.
While making some right noises of playing “constructive” role on the issue of memberships of India and Pakistan, China maintained that the matter was not on the agenda of the plenary. Here too, Beijing clubbed the two sub-continental neighbours despite the marked difference in their nuclear non-proliferation track record.

Coinciding with the SCO summit, the two-day annual plenary of the NSG began today in the South Korean capital during which India’s application for membership of the atomic trading club is likely to be deliberated upon.

While the US and France have issued statements ahead of the plenary strongly supporting India’s case and asking members to back New Delhi, China has been unrelenting in its opposition harping on the need to have a criteria for non-NPT countries like India and clubbing India’s case with that of Pakistan for which it is batting.

Roughly 20 countries are backing India’s case fully but given that the decisions in NSG are taken by consensus, India faces an uphill task. India is seeking membership of NSG to enable it to trade in and export nuclear technology.

Uproar over Salman Khan ‘raped woman’ comment

June 21, 2016 by Nasheman

Salman Khan

Actor Salman Khan has landed himself in a controversy after he reportedly compared himself with a raped woman when quizzed about the gruelling “Sultan” shoot. However, noted scriptwriter Salim Khan later apologised on behalf of his son.

Salman, 50, had to undergo rigorous training for the wrestling drama and in an interview to online entertainment portal Spotboye, he allegedly said that after shooting a scene, he used to feel like a “raped woman”.

“While shooting, during those six hours, there’d be so much of lifting and thrusting on the ground involved. That was tough for me because if I was lifting, I’d have to lift the same 120-kilo guy 10 times for 10 different angles. And likewise, get thrown that many times on the ground.

“This act is not repeated that many times in the real fights in the ring. When I used to walk out of the ring, after the shoot, I used to feel like a raped woman. I couldn’t walk straight. I would eat and then, head right back to training. That couldn’t stop.”

Salman’s comments did not go down well with many, who took to Twitter to express their angst and slam the actor.

Designer and BJP spokesperson Shaina NC asked Salman to apologise for his comments.

One Twitter user wrote, “I know Salman Khan has fans. But if his female fans are ok with his ‘I felt like a raped woman’ then I’ve just lost faith in the world.”

However, a section of people were defending him with #SalmanMisquoted which started trending on Twitter.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) commissioner, Lalitha Kumaramangalam, said that the actor is given seven-day time to apologise. Otherwise, he will be be asked to before the Commission.

“The Commission has sent him a letter asking him why he said this. Seven days have been given to him to apologise else we will call him to the Commission,” Ms. Kumaramangalam said.

Salim Khan apologises

After the Twitter outrage, “Sholay” scriptwriter Salim Khan (80), said whatever his son commented was wrong.

“Undoubtedly what Salman said is wrong, the simile, example and the context. The intention was not wrong. Nevertheless, I apologise on behalf of his family his fans & his friends. Forgiveness is to pardon the unpardonable or it is no virtue at all,” Mr. Salim Khan posted on Twitter.

He, however, said rather than focusing on his son’s mistake, people should celebrate International Yoga Day.

“To err is human to forgive divine. Today on Intl yoga day lets not run our shops on this mistake,” he tweeted.

Rajasthan Home minister abuses former PM Manmohan Singh, then says sorry

June 20, 2016 by Nasheman

Gulab Chand Kataria

New Delhi: Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria on Sunday kicked up a storm for allegedly using foul language while referring to former prime minister Manmohan Singh during a meeting of BJP workers in Churu. Kataria later apologised, saying that a word he used was “inappropriate”.

Comparing Prime Minister Narendra Modi to his predecessor, Kataria said: “Desh ka pradhan mantri pehle Manmohan Singh jab America utarta tha, toh sa** ko receive karne kay liye aira-gera nathu khaira mantri ja karke airport se lekar ata tha. Lekin ab Hindustan ka pradhan mantri jab jata hai, toh Obama swayam uth karke jata hai uski agwani karne ke liye. (When prime minister Manmohan Singh used to go to America, the sa** was received by ordinary ministers at the airport. But now, when India’s prime minister goes, [US President Barack] Obama himself comes to receive him.”

Later, the minister tendered an apology on Twitter but insisted that he did not say anything derogatory about the former prime minister.

Congress leader and former chief minister Ashok Gehlot sought action against Kataria for the speech. “The BJP must take strong action against him and he should be sacked from his post. The BJP’s leaders are shamelessly saying whatever they want. They have literally crossed all limits,” said Gehlot.

The Congress also criticised the minister’s derogatory tone while referring to the former PM in his nearly half-hour speech. Congress state president Sachin Pilot said that “the state home minister’s comments about a former PM only reflect the state of his mental faculties”.

Karnataka MLA Ambareesh submits one-line resignation; Speaker rejects it

June 20, 2016 by Nasheman

Ambareesh

Bengaluru: As discontent simmered over the reshuffle of his ministry by Chief Minister Sidddaramaiah, cine-actor turned politician Ambareesh today resigned as Member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

Ambareesh sent a one line resignation letter addressed to the Assembly Speaker through his personal assistant, the move coming a day after Siddaramaiah dropped 14 ministers and inducted 13 others in the major revamp.

Deputy Speaker Shivashankara Reddy, who is officiating as the Speaker’s post is lying vacant with Kagodu Thimmappa being appointed as the cabinet Minister, has not accepted the letter as the Member himself did not submit it.

“Ambareesh has sent a letter of resignation through some other person; any such letter will be considered valid if the member himself submits it. I have sent it back,” Shivashankar Reddy told media.

The resignation letter states he is resigning as MLA of Mandya constituency, without assigning any reason.

Ambareesh was the Housing Minister before he was dropped.

He had earlier also served as Member of Parliament and was Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, but had resigned from the Lok Sabha membership, expressing dissatisfaction with the Cauvery Dispute Tribunal award.

Ambareesh’s supporters in Mandya continued their protest for the second consecutive day today.

They had blocked the Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway yesterday.

Resentment is brewing within Congress after the reshuffle, with several dropped Ministers and those who were aspiring to join the cabinet openly expressing their unhappiness against the party leadership.

The ministers who faced the axe are: Qamarul Islam, Shamanoor Shivashankarappa, V Srinivasa Prasad, M H Ambareesh, Vinay Kumar Sorake, Satish Jarkiholi, Baburao Chinchansoor, Shivaraj Sangappa Tangadagi, S R Patil, Manohar Tahasildhar, K Abayachandra Jain, Dinesh Gundu Rao, Kimmane Ratnakar and P T Parameshwar Naik.

Srinivasa Prasad and Islam are among others who have made no secret of their displeasure over being dropped.

Supporters of Srinivas Prasad had called for a bandh in Chamarajanagar and Nanjangud today.

Similar protests by supporters of various aspirants Congress MLA’s and dropped Ministers have been reported from different parts of the state.
