Modi is coward and psychopath, says Kejriwal after CBI raids his office

December 15, 2015 by Nasheman

arvind-kejriwal

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today claimed the CBI has raided his office in central Delhi and launched a no holds barred attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he was resorting to “cowardice”.

The Chief Minister, who is involved in a prolonged tussle with the Centre, accused the Modi government of resorting to vendetta politics and came down heavily on the agency for the raids at Players Building.

“CBI raids my office,” Kejriwal tweeted.

CBI Spokesperson said the searches were being conducted at the office of the Principal Secretary Rajendra Kumar and that details would be shared later.

Sources said that a team of CBI officials went to the Delhi Secretariat, which houses office of Kejriwal and other ministers in the morning and conducted the search in the third floor of the building.

They said the search may be in connection with the multi-crore CNG fitness scam.

Sources said that there were allegations that Kejriwal’s Principal Secretary was linked to the scam but the senior IAS officer as well as AAP government have been rejecting the charges.

The third floor of the secretariat also houses Kejriwal’s offce.

The AAP government has been locked in a running feud with the Centre over the control of important functions like law and order, police and land.

Indo-Pak talks to mark beginning of peace, development

December 14, 2015 by Nasheman

Sushma Swaraj

New Delhi: India today expressed hope that re-engaging with Pakistan under a ‘Comprehensive Bilateral Dialogue’ will mark beginning of peace and development as continued estrangement was a hurdle to peace and prosperity in the region.

Making a suo motu statement in Rajya Sabha on her last week’s visit of Islamabad and recent developments relating to ties between the two neighbours, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had discussed with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif on the sidelines of the environment conference in Paris “again re-engaging with each other.”

“The underlying sentiment, on which I am confident that this House concurs fully, was that the continued estrangement of two neighbours was a hurdle to the realisation of our shared vision of a peaceful and prosperous region,” she said.

At the same time, there was also a “sharp awareness” that principal obstacles to the growth of ties, especially terrorism, would have to be clearly and directly addressed.
She read out her statement as members of several opposition parties were in the Well vociferously raising slogans on several issues.

Swaraj said following her visit to Islamabad a ‘Comprehensive Bilateral Dialogue’ with Pakistan will begin with the objective of “removing hurdles in the path of a constructive engagement by addressing issues of concern.”

Also, it aims at “exploring and establishing cooperative ties,” she said, adding initiatives on trade and connectivity, people-to-people exchanges and humanitarian issues would contribute to welfare of the entire region and promote better understanding and mutual trust.

“The new Dialogue, we sincerely hope, marks a new beginning also for peace and development in the whole region,” she said.

Following Modi-Sharif meeting on November 30, it was decided that the two sides should hold the NSA-level meeting. “The National Security Advisors of the two countries accordingly met on December 6” in Bangkok, Swaraj said.

The two NSAs focussed on “peace and security, terrorism, tranquility along the Line of Control and Jammu and Kashmir – the state which has been most directly impacted by terrorism and violation of LOC,” she said, adding her visit to Islamabad came on the back of these “constructive talks”.

Swaraj said in her talks with Sharif and Pakistan Foreign Minister Sartaj Aziz in Islamabad, which where held in the backdrop of this “positive development”, the “two sides condemned terrorism and resolved to cooperate to eliminate this menace.”

“There we dwelt on the need for Pakistan to expedite the Mumbai terrorist attacks trial. The Indian side was assured of the steps being taken to expedite its early conclusion,” she said.

Following this, it was decided to begin a dialogue with Pakistan under the new title ‘Comprehensive Bilateral Dialogue’ and foreign secretaries have been tasked to work out modalities and schedule of the meetings under the new dialogue, she said.

“I would like to assure the House that this Government accords the highest priority to the country’s security. In order to meet any threats in this regard, the government will take all steps, including through diplomatic channels,” she said.

The Government, she said, was “committed to building an environment of peaceful and cooperative relations with all our neighbours, including Pakistan, so that the efforts for peace and development in South Asia, initiated by the Government on the day of assuming office itself, are taken further forward.”

Swaraj said the 5th Ministerial Conference of the Heart of Asia Istanbul Process on December 8-9 in Islamabad was devoted to the themes of security and connectivity.

“The Conference provided to us an important opportunity on a vital regional platform for political constultations and regional cooperation to reiterate India’s commitment to Afghanistan’s stability and development and our faith in its future,” she said.

The process, she said, brought together friends of Afghanistan from its immediate and extended neighbourhood as well as supporting countries and international organisations to promote political consultations and regional cooperation for a united, democractic, independent, strong and prosperous Afghanistan.

“My visit to Islamabad underlined India’s strong commitment to that cause,” she said, adding New Delhi at the conference sought full and direct transit for Afghanistan through Pakistan.

“In the context of relations between India and Pakistan, I advocated working together for peace and development in South Asia, with self-confidence and maturity,” she said.

Swaraj said the beginning of Comprehensive Bilateral Dialogue was announced in a joint statement following her meeting with Aziz in Islamabad on December 9.

“This decision of the Government follows the recent developments and engagements between the two countries, especially the constructive discussions between their National Security Advisors in Bangkok on December 6, 2015.

“The meeting of the NSAs resulted from discussion between our Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Miniter Nawaz Sharif in Paris on November 30,” she said.

The Minister said Prime Minister of Pakistan was invited in May 2014, among other SAARC leaders, by Modi to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new Government.

“This was a demonstration of our commitment to good neighbourly ties with Pakistan, in line with our vision for peace and development in the region through deeper regional integration in South Asia,” she said.

In their first meeting, India’s views on ties between the countries and its concerns on terrorism and violence were conveyed to the Pakistani authorities.
The meetings as decided between the two sides in May 2014, however, did not take place, she said.

The two leaders met in Ufa, Russia in July this year and agreed that the two countries had collective responsibillity to ensure peace and promote development, Swaraj said. “They condemned terrorism in all its forms and agreed to cooperate with each other to eliminate this menance from South Asia.”

At the Ufa meeting, they decided on a meeting of the NSAs to discuss all issues connected to terrorism. They also stated that the two nations were prepared to discuss all outstanding issues.

“During the Ufa meeting, PM was extended an invitation by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to visit Islambad for attending the SAARC Summit in 2016,” she said, without saying if Modi will visit Pakistan.

Swaraj said the expected meetings of NSA and Directors General of Military Operations, as envisaged at Ufa, did not materialise “for the reaons that we all know.”

Against this backdrop, when Modi and Sharif met during the COP-21 Summit in Paris on November 30, “there was a discussion on how the two countries could build an atmosphere conducive for again re-engaging with each other,” she said.

RSS leader Manmohan Vaidya who endorsed beef eating justifies his stance

December 14, 2015 by Nasheman

Manmohan Vaidya

New Delhi: A senior leader of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, who had recently said that RSS members also can eat, has strongly justified his statement.

Manmohan Vaidya, the all-India prachar pramukh of RSS last week addressing reporters in Arunachal Pradesh said that RSS doesn’t dictate food habits.

He said that even though eating beef is not traditional across the country, it is fairly common practice in Arunachal Pradesh.

He said that beef eaters can also become part of RSS. According to the report, there are nearly 3000 RSS members in Arunachal Pradesh alone who consume beef.

Vaidya also firmly rejected charges of growing intolerance in the country. He said people of certain ideologies are always intolerant to contrarian views.

Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi earlier said that those who beef can go to Pakistan. One is unsure whether he is aware that some RSS members are beef-eaters.

Fortis Hospital, Vadapalani reaches out to conservation workers

December 10, 2015 by Nasheman

Fortis Medical Team with conservation workers.

Fortis Medical Team with conservation workers.

Chennai: While the city is limping back to normalcy and mass scale conservation work is going on, cleaning the city and unclogging the waterways, it goes without saying that, the people who are working towards this are exposed to various health hazards. The rains and flooding have created ideal situations for a host of waterborne diseases like Malaria, Cholera, and Leptospirosis to spread. The disaster management team at Fortis Health Care, Vadapalani wanted to address this issue at its early stages and started reaching out to people who are the most exposed to infections.

The cleaning and conservation workers as well as numerous volunteers who have involved themselves in these activities, to get the city back in shape, are in constant contact with sewage that has mixed with rain water, highly infectious waste material and carcasses of animals that died in the flooding. As the old adage goes ‘prevention is better than cure’ it is sensible that we prevent them from getting infections.

The medical team at Fortis has been going around the city, and is administering TT (Tetanus Toxoid) vaccination to all the conservation workers as a social responsibility. Doxycyclin is also being provided to the workers as a precaution against other water borne infections. The Fortis Healthcare team is also educating them on safety precautions like wearing hand-gloves, footwear, face masks etc., while working. The hospital team has already vaccinated more than 100 conservation workers in Jafferkhanpet and Vadapalani. The team will also be covering other parts of the city like T.Nagar, Saidapet, Tambaram, Velachery and Perungudi in the coming days.

Dr. Abhijit Sinha Roy, Head of Medical services, Fortis Healthcare, Vadapalani said “When a disaster of this scale, which hasn’t been seen in over a century happens, it leaves us with problems unknown and unaddressed and with no literature whatsoever, especially when it comes to new challenges in community healthcare. Fortis Health Care has adopted a prophylaxis model in addressing this issue and it focused more on high-risk areas, namely conservation work, and is trying to prevent diseases from being spread”.

Earlier the hospital has sent out mobile medical teams to various flood affected parts of the city to conduct preliminary screening to affected people. So far over 1500 people have been screened in places like Irumbiliyur, Mudichur, Tambaram etc. People have also been provided with prescription medicines free of cost, as and when required. The hospital has plans to continue this activity and reach out to other areas in the city.

CSR at Fortis Healthcare Limited

The CSR initiatives are driven by our vision, philosophy and the need of the community, with health remaining our main focus; we however, occasionally modify our programmes to suit our intended beneficiaries. We also promote awareness and educational programmes on preventive care and training people on several health related problems including emergency care. We have approximately 300 employees volunteering in our CSR initiatives and community development and they are allowed to take out time from their work schedule for these initiatives.

The organisation is committed to creating robust mechanisms to implement, record, review and measure outcomes of the initiatives for the community at large. This not only ensures the efficacy of our programmes but goes a long way in guaranteeing that they continue to be significant, relevant and sustainable so that the beneficiaries derive maximum benefit from our effort and equally importantly, we become proud of our contributions to the community. There is a regular feedback from the Fortis hospitals about running of the programmes and after appropriate review from time to time, necessary modifications (if required) are made to better the programme. All CSR initiatives are reported in the company’s annual report for information of our stakeholders. We also have specific programs to protect the environment through our work, like taking care of our biomedical waste, X-ray exposure, and so on which ensures cleaner environment and safety for our patients, attendants and employees.

‘Beef festival’ row: 8 organisers detained, BJP MLA arrested

December 10, 2015 by Nasheman

Beef-Osmania

Hyderabad: Eight organisers of the controversial ‘beef festival’ on Osmania University campus were detained while BJP MLA T Raja Singh, who was opposing the the event, was arrested here this morning, police said.

A ‘curfew-like’ situation prevailed on the campus with heavy police security being deployed to prevent any untoward incident.

A students’ group had earlier declared that it would hold a ‘beef festival’ on the campus today, coinciding with the World Human Rights Day, while another group also announced its plan to organise a ‘pork festival’ the same day, which raised the possibility of confrontation.

“We detained last night eight key members of the group which announced the beef festival today. As per court order, we will not allow any festivals on the Osmania University campus,” a police official told PTI.

Assistant Commissioner of Police K Ram Bhupal Rao told PTI that they arrested BJP MLA from Goshamahal, T Raja Singh, as a preventive measure to maintain law and order.
The legislator had vowed to stop the ‘beef festival’ and also announced that he along with other groups would perform a “Gau Puja” (cow worship) today.

A city civil court had passed the status quo order three days back, which amounts to staying the holding of the festivals, on a petition filed by an advocate.

The petition contended that these events are in violation of Cruelty Towards Animal Act and Cow Slaughter Act, and hurt the religious sentiments of the people.

Largescale violence was witnessed when beef festival was organised on the campus by a section of students in 2011, 2012 and 2014, said the petition.

On the University premises, police imposed restrictions on movement of people and vehicles.

Barricades were put up at all the vantage points of the institution and heavy police security was deployed.

Police did not allow even regular morning walkers in the university today.

Osmania University, one of the oldest educational institutions of higher learning, has already clarified that activities unrelated to academics, including ‘beef festival’, ‘pork festival’ and ‘gau-puja’ would not be permitted on the campus.

2002 hit-and-run case: Bombay High Court acquits Salman Khan

December 10, 2015 by Nasheman

Salman-Khan

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court today acquitted Bollywood star Salman Khan of all charges in the 2002 hit-and-run case in which he was convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment by a sessions court.

While acquitting the 49-year-old actor in a jampacked courtroom, Justice A R Joshi said, “The appeal is allowed. The trial court’s verdict is quashed and set aside. Salman is acquitted of all charges.”

On hearing the verdict, Salman broke down.

The actor, who wore a blue-white check shirt, arrived in the court at 1.30 PM even as the police made a tight bandobast around the high court premises.

He was accompanied by his bodyguard Shera, brother-in-law Ayush, sister Alvira and his manager.

Justice Joshi, who started dictating the verdict on Monday, said the prosecution failed to establish its case against the appellant accused (Salman) on all charges.

On September 28, 2002, Salman’s car had rammed into a bakery shop in suburban Bandra. One person was killed and four others were injured in the mishap.

Lawyers, litigants and many others had gathered in and around the court to have a glimpse of Salman as he came rushing from a studio in Karjat on the outskirts of Mumbai where he was shooting.

The judge said the burden is on the prosecution to establish the guilt of the accused and this needs to be done beyond reasonable doubt.

There are various shortcomings by the prosecution like not recording evidence of necessary and important witnesses and omissions and contradictions in the evidence of injured witnesses, which definitely create a doubt about the involvement of Salman for offences for which he has been charged, the court said.

On the basis of such evidence, Salman cannot be convicted, it said.

The judge further said that the investigation was conducted in a faulty manner with many loose ends and as such benefit of this had to be given in favour of the accused.

It is the duty of the court to analyse the evidence submitted to it and to see that the offence is proved beyond reasonable doubt, Justice Joshi said.

He said he is of the considered view that the appreciation of evidence done by the trial court while convicting the appellant was not proper and legal, as per the principles of criminal jurisprudence.

Consequently it must be said that this is not a case where the prosecution has successfully established its charges, he observed, adding that the entire evidence of the prosecution was circumstantial in nature.

On the main aspects as to driving and drunkenness, the prosecution has not brought any material evidence which spells out the offence of the accused, the court said.

The trial court erred in accepting bills (of Rain Bar and Restaurant where Salman had gone before the mishap) without a panchnama, the judge said while dictating the verdict.
