I am not scared of threat from rival gang: Chhota Rajan

October 28, 2015 by Nasheman

Chhota-Rajan

Bali: Underworld don Chhota Rajan today said he was not scared of threats to his life from rival gangs, including from Dawood Ibrahim, even as the Indonesia Police has provided him with special commando protection.

“I am not scared,” he said when reporters asked him if he was scared of threats to his life from rival gangs, including one headed by Dawood.

Arrested on arrival from Australia on Sunday, Rajan made the comments while being whisked away by police.

Bali Police spokesman Hery Wiyanto said they were aware of the threats faced by Rajan and he has been placed with special commandos for protection.

“We have all the measures in place to ensure that the prisoner’s security is not compromised. Since he is a foreigner, we have heightened security for him,” he told reporters.

Wiyanto said 55-year-old Rajan, whose original name is Rajendra Sadashiv Nikhalje, seems to be doing fine and there is no particular behavioural problem with him. “If he is under pressure, he is not showing,” he said.

Bali Police Commissioner Reinhard Nainggolan said Rajan, once close confidant-turned-rival of underworld ganglord Dawood, repeatedly pleaded before the interrogators to free him as he wanted to go to Zimbabwe.

Nainggolan said the mafia don was medically fit, thus contradicting reports of him suffering from multiple ailments.

Asked when he would be deported to India, where he is one of the most wanted criminals, Wiyanto said the Bali Police was waiting for a team of officials from India to interrogate Rajan first.

“We are waiting (for the Indian team). We will coordinate with the Indian authorities to formulate on how to deport Chhota Rajan back to India,” he said.

Bali Police commissioner Nainggolan said arrest of Rajan was a serious law enforcement operation under the supervision of the Interpol.

Giving details about the circumstances leading to Rajan’s arrest, he said they had information from the Indonesia Interpol that someone with the name Mohan Kumar has to be arrested based on the passport number.

“(When we got him) We told him not to worry if he cooperates with us. We told him about the Red Corner Notice. We told him that your photo provided is the same. He wanted my help to set him free,” he said.

Asked whether Rajan was accompanied by someone else also, Nainggolan said Rajan came to Bali alone and the arrest was made in Bali as the Interpol was informed by Australia that they cannot arrest someone only on the basis of Red Corner Notice.

Asked whether it was suspicious for the Indonesian authorities to find Rajan alone as police, rival gangs and mafias were looking for him, he said “of course it is very suspicious”.

“When we caught him, he looked scared…He is smoking constantly,” Nainggolan said.
Wiyanto said Rajan’s interrogation in Bali would be confined only to questioning on fake identity charges.

“Enquiry will be confined to ascertain whether the identity is true or not and to ensure that we did not arrest the wrong person,” he said.

Chhota Rajan, one of India’s most wanted gangster, was arrested in Bali, Indonesia, on a Red Corner Notice issued by Interpol after eluding law enforcement agencies for over two decades.

The arrest was made on a tip off from Australian police that Rajan, the powerful aide-turned-rival of terrorist Dawood Ibrahim, has flown from Sydney to Bali.

Beef row: Hindu Sena chief Vishnu Gupta detained

October 28, 2015 by Nasheman

Vishnu Gupta

New Delhi: Hindu Sena chief Vishnu Gupta was today detained by Delhi Police for allegedly making a false complaint that beef was being served at the Kerala house canteen here.

DCP (New Delhi) Jatin Narwal said that Vishnu Gupta is being questioned but did not disclose any further details.

The development comes a day after a major row erupted when Delhi police entered the Kerala House acting on the complaint, with a miffed Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy condemning the “raid” as “highly objectionable”. The Delhi Police and the Centre also came under attack from chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal and Mamata Banerjee.

Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi had yesterday said that police were contemplating action against the caller, Vishnu Gupta, under IPC Section 182 (false information, with intent to cause public servant to use his lawful power to the injury of another person).

He added that the PCR call regarding the beef complaint was given priority because it had the potential to disrupt harmony between communities and could have had “disastrous consequences”, especially because of the “past record” of the caller, identified as Vishnu Gupta, national president of Hindu Sena.

“The caller was already in police’s notice because of his past record,” said Bassi, adding that the officials deployed outside Kerala House to keep a watch were instructed to take preventive action in case Vishnu Gupta and his associates were caught doing any “mischief”.

Pakistan’s Edhi Foundation refuses to accept Rs 1 crore offer by Modi

October 28, 2015 by Nasheman

Edhi Foundation

New Delhi: Noted humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi on Tuesday refused to accept Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s donation of Rs 1 crore to his charity.

“Abdul Sattar Edhi has thanked Modi and politely declined to accept his announced financial help,” Edhi Foundation Spokesman Anwar Kazmi was quoted as saying by Dawn news.

Kazmi said Edhi’s son, Faisal Edhi, will be addressing a press conference in this regard at 4:30 pm at Karachi Press Club.

Modi had on Monday announced the contribution to the charity after the return of hearing and speech impaired girl Geeta to India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday offered Rs.1 crore to Pakistan’s Edhi Foundation for taking care of Geeta, a deaf and mute young Indian woman who was stranded there for over a decade.

“I don’t think any amount of words are enough to thank the Edhi family for taking care of Geeta. They are apostles of kindness and compassion,” Modi tweeted on Monday.

“What the Edhi family has done is too priceless to be measured but I am happy to announce a contribution of Rs 10 million for their foundation,” said another tweet from PM Modi.

PM Modi also expressed his gratitude to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for his efforts that ensured Geeta’s return to India.

The Edhi Foundation is a non-profit social welfare programme in Pakistan, founded by Abdul Sattar Edhi in 1951. He is popularly known as Pakistan’s “Father Teresa”.

Life at Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Bengaluru

October 27, 2015 by Nasheman

SIBM_Bengaluru Campus

Bengaluru: Amidst the high walls and cocooned shell of the three and a half acre campus of Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Bengaluru, they say what happens here; indeed does stay in the campus.

So let’s take a journey into the lives of the 341 students who strive each moment to meet deadlines, complete tasks and assignments, and try to accomplish higher standards. In the process, we are left to wonder if 24 hours is actually enough for an MBA student? But, what sets us apart is the level of student involvement in the day-to day functioning of the college. Being a student driven college primarily, we are involved in each and every activity, from placements to making sure of the quality of food available; from organizing the festivities to being the face of SIBM-B in the mass media. It’s all about the students. With 11 committees and 12 clubs; SIBM-B aims to achieve excellence in all avenues. The institute aims to inculcate in each individual a sense of responsibility, independence skill development and healthy competition. With the constant floods of tests, assignments and events and live projects, each of us eventually learn how to survive on average four hours of sleep.

The state-of-the-art faculty at SIBM-B is a cross section of both members from the industry as well as academia. Each faculty member is a sea of knowledge, and sometimes is not possible to impart it all during lectures. Hence, they take up individual doubts very patiently in class and any time offline too. The various clubs focus on each of the functional areas of specializations like HR, Finance, Marketing and Operations. The main aim of the clubs is to provide knowledge beyond the course books to match up with current industry requirements. All this, again managed by the students themselves.

A holistic environment congenial for adequate growth opportunities is provided at each level. There is a healthy level of student-teacher interaction through mentorships too, where each student is assigned a mentor whom they can fall back to at all times. Analyzing Harvard Business Review case studies, various other case discussions and making PowerPoint presentations is what each of us knows like the back of our hands by now.

The mess has variety of foods available with the good part being that there is no limit on the amount of intake. The college also has an amphitheater where street plays, musical concerts, and movie projections are held from time to time to give students a break. If that was not enough, there is a 24 hours-open reading room, a library, a well-equipped gymnasium, a basketball court, an indoor badminton court and a volleyball court. In short, there are adequate recreational provisions made, which each of us manage to make use of.

The day starts at 9 am and ends by 6:15 pm for most of us. After which, one can straight away see herds of students flocking to the reading room or the library; some to the gym; some to the cafeteria; and some to flex their muscles by playing a sport.

SIBM-B is seldom asleep. Be it at 2 am, one will always either find groups of students studying at one end or a group singing at another. From chit-chatting at one end to making assignments at another, the balance seems to be just right.

To survive in the rat-race that the world is now, one not only needs to be hard working but also needs to develop and hone other key skills. Keeping this in mind, the curriculum is very challenging, intense and beneficial. They say, MBA is all about developing people skills, network, professional knowledge and rigorous mindset. And no better place could offer this than SIBM-B. Focusing on all the key aspects simultaneously as well as making each moment worth a memory is what we all are going to take from our two years here.

BJP govt is Congress plus a cow, never seen a weaker PMO: Arun Shourie

October 27, 2015 by Nasheman

arun shourie

New Delhi: In a sharp attack on the Narendra Modi government, BJP leader Arun Shourie on Monday contended that it believes that managing economy means “managing the headlines” and that people had started recalling the days of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

“Doctor Singh (Manmohan Singh) ko log yaad karne lag gaye hain (People have started recalling the days of Manmohan Singh). The way to characterise policies of the government is — Congress plus a cow. Policies are the same,” Mr. Shourie said at book launch function.

The function to launch Turn of The Tortoise, a book written by former Business Standard Editor-in-Chief T. N. Ninan, was attended by Manmohan Singh, Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subranamian and former Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran.

Pointing out differences between the present and the previous governments, Mr. Shourie said: “There is clearer belief (in the present dispensation) that managing economy means managing the headlines and this is not really going to work.”

Mr. Shourie, who was a Minister in the Vajpayee government, said: “I feel there was never a weaker a PMO as now… There has never been as great a centralisation of functions, not power, of functions in PMO as now. …If fellows don’t have domain expertise, that Brajesh Mishra had, L.K. Jha had, all these principal secretaries had, then things get stuck.”

Mr. Shourie said, “If you see impediments that were there in tax administration, virtually no change… Banking reform has been delayed by year and a half for no reason. So therefore this tortoise is a very generous metaphor. Ye to so hi jata hai (this tortoise goes to sleep).”

‘Industrialists afraid’

He claimed that industrialists are afraid of speaking against the government. “The industrialists who meet the Prime Minister don’t speak the whole truth. After meeting PM, they say ‘please do something’ And in front of the media they give the government 9 out of 10.”

Hindu Sena men storm into Kerala House for serving beef

October 27, 2015 by Nasheman

Kerala House

New Delhi: Activists from a right wing group created a ruckus at Kerala House near Jantar Mantar on Monday, alleging that the canteen there was serving cow meat.

K.G. Joseph, a protocol officer at the State’s guest house, however, said that the word beef in the menu referred to buffalo meat, consuming which was legal in the Capital.

Three members of Hindu Sena, who barged into the house complex after being instigated by a Vishwa Hindu Parishad activist from Kerala, also sought police intervention in the matter.

They even threatened to resort to violence if the “sale of cow meat” was not stopped there.

Hindu Sena was recently in the news for attacking an independent MLA from J&K, Engineer Rashid, and smearing his face with black for hosting a beef party in the valley.

New Delhi: Fugitive Chhota Rajan, wanted over a series of murders in India, has been arrested in Indonesia after decades on the run, police said on Monday.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh and CBI confirmed the arrest of underworld don Chhota Rajan in Indonesia. “Bali Police arrested Chhota Rajan yesterday at CBI’s request made through Interpol,” said CBI Director Anil Sinha.

The CBI in its official statement said, “At the request of CBI (Interpol) India, the Bali police has arrested an Indian national, Mohan Kumar on 25 October 2015. Mohan Kumar alias Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje alias Chhota Rajan is a fugitive and CBI has been pursuing the matter with Australian authorities. This is a good and close cooperation between India, Australia and Indonesia. We thank Indonesia and Australia for their prompt action at our request. Further action will be taken as required under the law.”

Acting on a tip-off from Australian police, Indonesian authorities detained Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, alias ‘Chhota Rajan’ on Sunday as he arrived in the popular resort island of Bali from Sydney, Bali police spokesman Heri Wiyanto told AFP.

The 55-year-old Nikalje, an alleged crime boss in India, had been on the run for two decades, Wiyanto said, with Interpol flagging him as a wanted man back in 1995.

“We received information from police in Canberra yesterday (Sunday) about the red notice for a murderer,” he said.

“We arrested the man at the airport yesterday. What we know is that this man was suspected to have carried out 15 to 20 murders in India.”

Bali police were coordinating with Interpol and Indian authorities, Wiyanto said, adding it was likely Nikalje would be deported to India.

A spokesperson for Australian Federal Police said Interpol in Canberra had alerted Indonesian authorities “who apprehended Nikalje at the request of Indian authorities”.

The federal police confirmed last month that Nikalje was living in Australia under another identity and had been in discussions with Indian authorities, the spokesperson said, but would not provide further details.

Interpol’s website states that Nikalje was born in Mumbai and was wanted for multiple charges including murder and possession and use of illegal firearms.
