Siddaramaiah says he will be Karnataka CM for 5 years

Siddaramaiah says he will be Karnataka CM for 5 years
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah

Chikkaballapura: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday asserted that he will be in office for a full five-year term.

He said that the Congress party was united and the party’s government will be in power “solid as a rock” for five years.

“Yes, I will be. Why do you have the doubts?” Siddaramaiah said in response to a question by reporters whether he will be the CM for five years.

There has been speculation within political circles, especially within the ruling Congress, for some time now about the Chief Minister change later this year, citing power-sharing agreement involving Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

However, Shivakumar on Tuesday said there is no discussion on leadership change and stressed on strengthening the hands of CM Siddaramaiah and the party’s government in the state.

Responding to a question on claims by the BJP and JD(S) leaders that the CM will be replaced, Siddaramaiah shot back, “Are they our high command?”

“R Ashoka (Leader of Opposition in the Assembly) is a BJP man. B Y Vijayendra (state BJP President) is a BJP man. Chalavadi Narayanaswamy (Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council) is a BJP man. Will you write if they say such things? Should you verify or not?” he asked.

Alleging the BJP of spreading lies about the stability of the government, Siddaramaiah said that the Congress party was united and the government will be in power “solid as a rock” for five years.

“No one believes in the BJP. They only lie. They are experts in lying. They don’t know how to speak the truth. So, whether they believe it or not, we don’t know. We are all together (in Congress). As I have said in Mysuru recently, we will be in power for five years. Our government will be as solid as a rock. BJP people are daydreaming,” he said.

Accusing the BJP of doing nothing while in power, he asked, what evidence have they left to say that they have worked for the development of the state in sectors such as — irrigation, rural development, public works, education, and health?

“They (BJP) were in power for about four years and for 1.2 years in coalition government with JD(S) under H D Kumaraswamy’s Chief Ministership. What have they done? They have done nothing. By lying they are trying to mislead the people,” he added.

Responding to a question on ministerial aspirants in the Congress, the CM said the Congress high command will decide.

“In a democracy, everyone has the right to become a CM. The high command (of Congress) will ultimately decide. There are about 140 people (legislators) in our party. Only 34 people can be made ministers. Can everybody be made minister?” he asked.

Earlier in the day, speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Shivakumar asserted that there is no disgruntlement within the ruling Congress and when Siddaramaiah is there as the CM, there is no need for any discord on the leadership issue.

There was stiff competition between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar for the chief minister’s post after the declaration of Assembly election results in May 2023, and the Congress had managed to convince the latter and made him the Deputy CM.

There were some reports at the time that a compromise had been reached based on a “rotational chief minister formula,” according to which Shivakumar will become CM after two-and-half years, but they have not been officially confirmed by the party.

Amid deaths due to heart attacks CM Siddaramaiah cautions people against symptoms

Amid deaths due to heart attacks, CM Siddaramaiah cautions people against symptoms
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru: In the wake of recent cases of deaths due to heart attacks in Hassan, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday cautioned people against symptoms even as an experts committee headed by the Director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research has been formed to identify the exact cause behind these deaths.

He urged everyone to visit the nearest health center immediately for a check-up if they have symptoms such as chest pain or difficulty breathing, and not to ignore these signs.

The chief minister said that more than twenty people have died due to heart attacks in the past month alone in just one district of Hassan.

The government is taking this matter very seriously.

To identify the exact cause of these series of deaths and to find solutions, a committee of experts has been formed under the leadership of Dr Ravindranath, Director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, and they have been instructed to submit a study report within 10 days he said, in a post on ‘X’.

According to him, orders were given to the same committee back in February to conduct a thorough study on the reasons behind sudden deaths among young people in the state, and whether the COVID vaccines could have had any adverse effects. In this regard, the process of examining and analysing heart patients is also underway.

“We too value the lives of children, youth, and innocent people who have their entire lives ahead of them, and we share the concerns of their families,” he said.

Siddaramaiah condemned the actions of BJP leaders, alleging that they are using such matters for their political gains.

“It cannot be denied that the hasty approval and distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine to the public could also be a reason for these deaths, as several studies worldwide have recently indicated that COVID vaccines could be a cause for the increasing number of heart attacks. Before the BJP criticise us on this matter, they should ask their conscience,” he added.

The chief minister said the state government is fully committed to finding the true cause behind these sudden series of deaths in Hassan district and across the state and to preventing them.

“With this goal, we have already implemented schemes like Hridaya Jyothi and Gruha Arogya to monitor public health. Based on the report from the expert committee under Dr Ravindranath’s guidance, necessary actions will also be taken. As a government, we are making every possible effort to protect the health of the people,” he said.

According to the health department, a directive has also been issued to form a district-level committee to verify the facts of each reported cases of heart attack death in the media. The committee headed by Dr Ravindranath has been instructed to investigate this matter in collaboration with Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences and to submit a report within 10 days.

Health Minister Dinesh Gundo Rao said Dr Ravindranath committee will look into these deaths, conduct an audit, collect all the necessary information, and check for any abnormalities or variations.

“We’ve taken it seriously. If there are any factors beyond medical reasons, those will also be examined and verified. A proper scientific analysis will be done once the report is ready. We have asked the committee to submit the report within 10 days, and based on that, we will take further decisions,” he told reporters here.

Among the reported deaths due to heart attacks in Hassan, four were in the age group of 20 years and below, one in the age group of 21-29 years, five were in the age group of 30-40 years, seven deaths were in the age group of 41-59 years and one death was in the age group of above 60 years, the health department added.

Indian cricketers asked to stay indoors after suspicious packet found in heart of Birmingham

Birmingham The Indian cricket team, staying in the heart of Birmingham, was asked to stay indoors after a suspicious package was found at the nearby Centenary Square.

A BCCI source confirmed to PTI that players were asked not to venture out following a social media post from the Birmingham City Centre Police.

Usually the Indian cricketers explore the areas close to the team hotel and ahead of the second Test, they were frequenting the bustling Broad Street.

A total of eight players including captain Shubman Gill turned up for training at Edgbaston while the other 10 members had an off day.

“We’ve currently got a cordon in place around Centenary Square, Birmingham city centre, while we investigate a suspicious package,” read a post from Birmingham City Centre Police on X.

“We were alerted just before 3pm, and a number of buildings have been evacuated as a precaution while it’s assessed. Please avoid the area,” the message read.

However, an hour later police lifted the cordon.

CM Pinarayi Vijayan warns against twisting isolated incidents to tarnish Kerala’s health system

July 2, 2025 by Nasheman

CM Pinarayi Vijayan warns against ''twisting'' isolated incidents to tarnish Kerala's health system
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan

Kannur (Kerala): Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday warned that taking isolated issues out of context could unfairly tarnish the state’s hard-earned reputation for having one of India’s best public health systems.

His comments followed recent remarks by Dr Haris Chirakkal, a senior government surgeon at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital, who flagged shortages of surgical equipment and delays in critical procedures.

The doctor’s revelations had sparked debate on the condition of Kerala’s state-run hospitals.

While Vijayan did not question the integrity of the doctor, he said such statements, when highlighted in the wrong way, could unintentionally misrepresent the larger picture.

“He is a sincere government employee, free of corruption and deeply committed to his duty. Despite this, he has now inadvertently become the reason for misrepresenting what is arguably the best healthcare system in India. It is unclear whether this was his intention. Still, this incident should serve as a lesson for all of us,” Vijayan said.

The Chief Minister was delivering the concluding address at the regional-level review meeting for the districts of Kannur, Kasaragod, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, held at the Krishna Menon Memorial Government Women’s College auditorium in Kannur, with the participation of ministers and senior officials.

He acknowledged that temporary shortages can happen but insisted that the state government moves quickly to resolve them.

“No one can claim that everything is perfect. Our medical colleges perform highly complex surgeries. The government ensures all necessary support for such procedures. At times, there may be shortages of certain equipment, but that is not a permanent situation. Such issues are addressed quickly, with necessary equipment procured promptly,” Vijayan said.

The Chief Minister added that an official clarification had already been issued regarding the matter raised by Dr Chirakkal.

Dissatisfaction must not become a tool in the hands of those who want to show Kerala in a poor light, he added.

Vijayan said that there is a deliberate attempt to create negativity about Kerala.

He noted that some sectors are functioning well and are widely acknowledged for their good performance, but recent developments show a calculated effort to distort these realities.

Vijayan alleged that some people in society seem to have a vested interest in ensuring that good things do not continue as they are. Unfortunately, the media–which should be reporting the news–are now taking the lead in this distortion.

“Rather than presenting news, they are more interested in pushing their own views,” the Chief Minister said.

Vijayan strongly defended Kerala’s healthcare system, saying it enjoys wide recognition both within and outside the state.

“Our health sector has made significant progress. Compared to the past, there has been steady improvement. This didn’t happen by accident–it is the result of deliberate and focused government intervention,” he said.

The Chief Minister said the budget allocation for health has also been increased accordingly.

But now, he claimed, there is a coordinated effort to misrepresent the sector, particularly by focusing on medical colleges.

“In Kerala, public opinion holds that our medical colleges have grown and improved greatly. Still, efforts are being made to present a false image. We must all be aware of this,” Vijayan said, in an apparent reference to the Congress protest at the Medical Colleges in Kerala on Tuesday.

There is a conscious misinterpretation and a deliberate attempt to portray things in a negative light, he said.

The controversy erupted after Dr Chirakkal posted on Facebook about the shortage of essential medical equipment, which he said had led to the postponement of surgeries.

He alleged that repeated assurances from authorities had failed to resolve the issue, leaving patients in severe pain waiting for timely treatment.

He also said he was under immense mental stress, unable to fulfil his responsibilities to patients who depend on government hospitals.

Director of Medical Education Dr Vishwanathan K later called Dr Chirakkal’s remarks “misleading and an emotional outburst”.

However, Health Minister Veena George refrained from criticising Chirakkal, describing him as a “hardworking and trustworthy doctor”.

She acknowledged systemic issues in the healthcare sector and assured that his concerns would be examined thoroughly.

Siddaramaiah demands immediate roll back of hike in railway fares

Siddaramaiah demands immediate roll back of hike in railway fares
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru: Slamming the BJP-led government at the Centre for the railway fare hike, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has demanded its immediate rollback.

The railway ministry issued an official circular on Monday, increasing the fares of the non-air-conditioned class in mail and express trains by 1 paisa and all air-conditioned classes by 2 paise per kilometre from July 1.

The daily wage workers, students, small traders, and the common man struggling under rising prices

He said When we increased milk prices to help our farmers, Karnataka BJP shouted in the streets and called it anti-people. But now when the BJP led Union Govt hikes railway fares there is deafening silence. Why

Because this hike doesn’t help farmers or the poor it only helps BJP Government fill its own coffers.

Noting that when metro fares were hiked in Karnataka after 8 years, BJP leaders rushed to blame the Congress government, ignoring the fact that the fare hike decision was taken by a fare fixation committee constituted by the Union Government itself, he said. Back then, the Centre manipulated the narrative to place the burden on the state government Siddaramaiah added.

Stating that the Congress stands with the people of Karnataka and the country who are forced to pay more for essential travel, Siddaramaiah said this fare hike must be rolled back immediately.

Don’t make people’s daily travel another jumla. Let the trains run not the people’s patience he added.

Cal HC orders Md Shami monthly payment of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance to estranged wife daughter

Cal HC orders Md Shami monthly payment of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance to estranged wife, daughter
Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami

Kolkata: Calcutta High Court directed Indian pacer Mohammed Shami to pay his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, and daughter a monthly alimony of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance during the ongoing legal battle with his spouse.

Jahan had moved the high court against a district sessions court’s order directing the cricketer to pay Rs 50,000 to his wife and Rs 80,000 to her daughter in 2023.

“In my considered opinion, a sum of Rs 1,50,000 per month to the petitioner no.1 (wife) and Rs 2,50,000 to her daughter would be just fair and reasonable to ensure financial stability for both the petitioners, till disposal of the main application,” the order passed by Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee on Tuesday stated.

“However as regards petitioner’s child the husband /opposite party No 2 will always be at liberty to voluntarily assist her with educational and/or other reasonable expenses, over and above the aforesaid amount,” the order added.

Jahan had lodged an FIR at the Jadavpur police station against Shami and his family in March 2018, four years after their marriage in April 2014, alleging “enormous physical and mental torture” under Section 12 of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violation (PWDV) Act, 2005 and “sustained indifference and neglect” of her minor daughter.

Besides domestic violence, she also accused Shami of dowry harassment and match-fixing while alleging that Shami had stopped shouldering financial responsibility for running her family expenses.

She had prayed for monetary relief, including an interim monetary relief of Rs 7 lakh per month for herself and an additional Rs 3 lakh for her daughter.

The magistrate, while disposing of her application, had initially rejected her prayer for monetary relief and directed the pacer a monthly payment of Rs 80,000 towards his minor daughter.

On appeal, the order was later modified, directing Shami to a monthly payment of Rs 50,000 to his wife and Rs 80,000 to his daughter.

“In view of materials placed before me and considering the elements for the determination of the quantum of maintenance as held in the salutary judgments, I am of the view that the quantum of interim monetary relief as fixed by the court below requires revision,” the high court order stated.

“The opposite party/husband’s income, financial disclosure and earnings established that he is in a position to pay a higher amount. The petitioner’s wife, who has remained unmarried and is living independently with the child, is entitled to a levelled maintenance that she enjoyed during her continuance of marriage and which reasonably secures her future as well as the future of the child,” it went on to add.

Minor boy pushes teen to death from Mumbai building tries to pass it off as suicide

July 2, 2025 by Nasheman

Mumbai: Police have registered a murder case against a minor boy after he allegedly pushed to death a 15-year-old girl from the terrace of a building in Mumbai and tried to pass it off as a suicide, an official said.

The 16-year-old accused and the victim were friends. The girl was a student of an international school and resided with her mother in Mulund area.

On June 24, the girl arrived at a housing society in Bhandup (West) area to meet the boy and discussed her academic stress with him, the Bhandup police official said on Tuesday.

The boy then took her atop a water tank on the terrace of the building’s D-wing. While they were chatting, their conversation turned into a heated argument about dating, the official said.

During the argument, the boy allegedly pushed the girl, causing the teenager to fall to her death from the building, he said.

The boy subsequently threw the girl’s mobile phone from the terrace, which landed near the building’s E-wing.

A security guard spotted the girl’s body in the duct area and alerted the police.

During the investigation, the boy told the police that the girl had committed suicide by jumping from a window between the 30th and 31st floors due to study-related stress, the official said.

After examining the building’s CCTV footage, the police detained the boy who later confessed to the crime, the official said.

A case on charges of murder was registered against the boy on Monday night and he was sent to a juvenile detention centre in Dongri, the police said.

BSF jawan’s wife raped by kin, in-laws, brothers-in-law booked 1 held

July 1, 2025 by Nasheman

Pilibhit: Two brothers-in-law allegedly raped the wife of a BSF jawan on multiple occasions and blackmailed her using obscene videos, police here said.

An FIR has been lodged against seven persons, including the rape survivor’s in-laws, in connection with the matter. One of the brothers-in-law has been arrested, police said on Monday.

The complainant told the police that after she got married, she lived in a separate house with her mother-in-law, outside her village. Her husband was in BSF, so he would often be on duty.

The survivor told the police that whenever her mother-in-law went to her residence, both her brothers-in-law would enter her house (outside the village) and rape her. They made videos of the act and used them to blackmail her into submission, police said.

She said that when her husband returned home on leave, her brothers-in-law showed him the videos. She claimed that her in-laws beat her and her husband. They also tried to kill her by strangulation, police said.

The accused also threatened to post the videos online, police added.

The Jahanabad police station in-charge Manoj Kumar Mishra said that on the complaint of the victim, an FIR was registered against seven persons, including the mother-in-law and father-in-law, for rape and assault under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act.

“One of the accused brother-in-law Hariom has been arrested. The police are searching for the remaining accused. Every possible effort is being made to get justice for the victim,” Mishra added.
