Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha approaches Agra court against annual Urs at Taj Mahal

February 3, 2024 by Nasheman

Muslims offering prayers at the Taj Mahal, Agra on the occasion of Bakrid.

AGRA: A right wing organisation has filed a petition in an Agra court seeking prohibitory injunction against the observation of the ‘Urs’ at the Taj Mahal.

The petitioner, Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, has also challenged the free entry for ‘Urs’ inside the Taj Mahal.

The court accepted the petition and fixed March 4 as the date of hearing.

The three-day ‘Urs’ event will take place this year from February 6 to February 8.

The period is observed to mark the death of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, who got the Taj Mahal constructed in 1653 on the banks of of the Yamuna river.

Petitioner’s counsel Anil Kumar Tiwari said, “On Friday, the petitioner ABHM through its divisional head Meena Diwakar and district president Saurabh Sharma filed a petition in the Court of IV Additional Civil Judge (Junior Division) Room No 4 at Civil Court premises in Agra.

“They have sought for a permanent prohibitory injunction against the committee celebrating the ‘Urs. The petitioner has also objected to having free entry for the Urs at the Taj Mahal.”

ABHM spokesperson Sanjay Jat contended that the body had filed the petition on the basis of an RTI which revealed that neither the Mughals, nor the British allowed Urs to take place inside the Taj.

“The petition has been filed on the basis of an RTI filed by a Raj Kishore Raje, an historian of Agra city. In the RTI, he asked ASI who permitted ‘Urs’ celebration and ‘Namaz’ in Taj Mahal premises. The ASI replied that neither Mughals, nor the British government or the Government of India have allowed ‘Urs’ celebration in the Taj Mahal

“So, on that basis we have filed a petition seeking the prohibitory injunction, stopping the organisers of Shahjahan ‘Urs’ Celebration Committee, headed by Saiyyad Ibrahim Zaidi, from celebrating the ‘Urs’ at the Taj Mahal.”

The three-day ‘Urs’ sees the rituals of ‘chadar poshi’, ‘sandal’, ‘gusul’, ‘kul’ among other events.

On the last day of the ‘Urs’, a ‘chadar’, measuring 1,880 metre or more, is offered.

In our third term, India will become world’s 3rd-largest economy: PM Modi

February 3, 2024 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: Confident of winning the upcoming General Election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said in the third term of BJP-led central government, India will become the world’s third-largest economy.

“India is on the move and is moving fast. Today’s India is moving forward to make ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047…This is the start of golden period for the Indian mobility sector. Today, India’s economy is growing at a brisk pace. In our third term, India’s economy is sure to become the third largest in the world,” said the PM at Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024.

According to IMF data, India is currently placed at the fifth spot with the size of its economy pegged at over $3.7 trillion. The United States sits at the (around $27 trillion) and is followed by China (around $17.7 trillion), Germany ($4.4 trillion) and Japan ($4.2 trillion).

While giving numbers as to how the country’s mobility sector has grown in size over the last 10 years since his government first came to power in 2014, Modi said that in Amrit Kaal, India’s passenger vehicle, commercial vehicle and auto component industry should strive to become number 1 in the world. As per Modi, the emergence of neo-middle class, expanding spheres and growing income of the middle class will continue to generate demand for the mobility sector.

To lure the driver community who recently protested against the new hit-and-run law, Modi said that a new scheme is in the works to develop modern buildings with facilities for food, clean drinking water, toilets, parking and rest for drivers on all national highways. He added that the government is preparing to build 1,000 such buildings across the country in the first phase of this scheme. The PM advised tyre manufacturers to hold discussions with farmers to meet the need for natural rubber domestically.

I missed a stumping in Mohali and the crowd started to chant Dhoni Dhoni: Pant

February 2, 2024 by Nasheman

Indian Cricketer Rishabh Pant

NEW DELHI: Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been Rishabh Pant’s sounding board for a while now but there was a time when comparisons with the legendary former India skipper left the young keeper-batter so stressed that he struggled “to breathe”.

Pant is still recovering from a life-threatening car crash in 2022 and acknowledged that at this stage, Dhoni is the only person with whom he is comfortable sharing just about everything in his life.

But he also admitted that comparisons with the iconic Ranchi man were hard to take in the early days of his career.

“I used to really feel very bad. I used to go back to my room and cry at 20-21 years of age. Under stress, I couldn’t breathe. So much pressure, and I didn’t know what to do. I missed a stumping in Mohali, and the crowd started to chant ‘Dhoni Dhoni’,” Pant said in a ‘Star Sports’ series that documents his recovery from the accident.

Pant said at this point he feels emotionally overwhelmed while talking about his dynamics with the 2011 World Cup winner.

“I always find it difficult to explain my relationship with MS. Dhoni. There are some with whom you can talk freely. I discuss everything with MSD. I have learned so much from him.

“I discuss things with him that I wouldn’t discuss with anybody else. That’s the kind of relationship (I have) with him,” Pant said.

Pant, who was inarguably India’s biggest game-changer in Test cricket before being thrown off track by the horrific crash, said before it became hurtful, he was genuinely confused by the comparisons with a bonafide legend like Dhoni.

“First of all, I didn’t understand why questions were raised. I had just made it to the team, and people were talking about being a replacement,” Pant said.

“Why were people raising such questions at a youngster? Why are you comparing? There shouldn’t be any comparison at all. Some have played five matches and the others have played 500. It’s been such a long journey, so many ups and downs, so the comparison is not fair.”

Pant said he would forever be indebted to seniors like Yuvraj Singh for making him comfortable when he first came in.

“At the start, I was very young, and there were a lot of senior players, a lot of them actually. Yuvraj Singh, MS were there, all seniors. It does take some time, but I didn’t get the feeling of them being super seniors.

“They were very welcoming and made me very comfortable. They make every new player very comfortable. This is the culture of the Indian team,” he said.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal skips 5th ED summons

February 2, 2024 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will not appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday for questioning in an alleged money laundering case linked to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy, according to the AAP.

The ED on Wednesday had issued a fresh and the fifth summons to Kejriwal after he skipped four earlier summonses over the last four months.

“Kejriwal will not appear before the agency for questioning,” the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said.

Terming the summons “illegal”, the party said the ED is repeatedly sending notices to Kejriwal to arrest him

The AAP also alleged that the BJP wants to topple its government in Delhi by getting Kejriwal arrested.

The AAP will not let this happen, it said.

The Delhi chief minister is, however, scheduled to take part in a protest of the AAP outside the BJP headquarters here at 11 am.

Kejriwal skipped ED summonses for November 2 and December 21 in 2023 and January 3 and January 18 this year.

It is alleged that the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22 to grant licences to liquor traders allowed cartelisation and favoured certain dealers who had allegedly paid bribes for it, a charge repeatedly refuted by the AAP.

The policy was subsequently scrapped and Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation probe, following which the ED registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Bengaluru gets big push ahead of Lok Sabha polls

February 2, 2024 by Nasheman

BENGALURU : The Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday approved many projects and works for Bengaluru, including Rs 263 crore for an elevated flyover near Sir M Vivesvaraya Terminus. The government’s push for projects in Bengaluru comes ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

After the cabinet meeting, Law Minister HK Patil told reporters that the cabinet had given administrative approval of Rs 263 crore to construct an elevated flyover near Byappanahalli railway level crossing to the new Sir MV Terminal. There was a demand for road connectivity from the newly constructed Sir M Vivesvaraya Terminus of South Western Railway to Byappanahalli Metro station.

According to Patil, the road connectivity would help lakhs of people who travel, and also reduce traffic congestion. “In order to resolve this issue, a 1.5-km long flyover was proposed at IOC junction and construction of an additional two-lane Railway Over Bridge at Byappanahalli railway level crossing,” he explained. This flyover is also expected to allow people from Kammanahalli, Banasawadi and Old Madras Road access the terminus with ease.

The cabinet also approved the preparation of a Rs 1,200-crore action plan to provide basic amenities and also for white-topping roads. On the length of roads, Patil said BBMP will decide. They also approved a Rs 208-crore project to provide drinking water to villages that were newly added to City Corporation limits. Apart from this, a sum of Rs 150 crore was allocated for upgrading the Mother and Child Hospital in KC General Hospital premises.

In 2019, BJP had won all three Lok Sabha seats in the state capital, and this time around, the Congress is making all attempts to improve its performance.

Delhi Speaker, Deputy Mayor placed under house arrest ahead of AAP’s protest against Chandigarh mayoral polls ‘cheating’

February 2, 2024 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: Delhi Speaker Ram Niwas Goel and Deputy Mayor Aaley Mohd Iqbal have been placed under house arrest ahead of the protest planned by the Aam Aadmi Party, Gopal Rai said at a press conference on Friday.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal alleged that several AAP MLAs and volunteers coming to participate in the party’s protest outside the BJP headquarters here against the “cheating” in the Chandigarh mayoral polls were being stopped or detained.

Security has been stepped-up in Central Delhi with police barricading several roads leading to the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg and deploying additional personnel in view of the Aam Aadmi Party’s demonstration as well as a protest by the BJP against “corruption” in the Kejriwal government. The BJP will stage its protest near the AAP head office.

“First votes were stolen in the Chandigarh mayoral elections. Now, people coming to protest peacefully against this are being stopped at various places across Delhi,” Kejriwal said in a post on X, ahead of the demonstration scheduled to begin at 11 am.

In another post, he said that “across Delhi, they are detaining elected MLAs, councillors and volunteers, who were coming to the party office”.

“What is this going on?” he asked.

Officials said roads leading to the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg have been closed since morning and barricades have been set up near the headquarters of the BJP and the AAP.

In a post on X, Delhi Minister and AAP leader Atishi said, “Heavy barricading all across Delhi. Buses full of AAP volunteers being detained. Hundreds of para-military forces outside the AAP office.”

“Why is the BJP so scared of a protest on the Chandigarh mayor elections?” she asked.

Her cabinet colleague Saurabh Bharadwaj in a video statement asked whether the BJP was scared of Kejriwal.

“The entire entire country saw how votes were stolen in the Chandigarh mayoral polls by the BJP. Two elected chief ministers — Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann are coming to protest against it,” he said.

The BJP on Tuesday swept the Chandigarh mayoral polls, retaining all three posts of mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor, in a setback to the Congress-AAP alliance which has alleged tampering with ballot papers by the presiding officer.

JMM legislature party leader Champai Soren sworn in as 12th chief minister of Jharkhand

February 2, 2024 by Nasheman

RANCHI: After a high-voltage political drama in Jharkhand for the past three days, JMM legislature party leader Champai Soren was sworn in as the chief minister of Jharkhand at the Raj Bhawan in Ranchi.

Champai Soren was appointed to the chief minister’s post on Thursday after he urged the governor to accept his claim to form the government at the earliest as there was “confusion” in the state which was without a chief minister since the resignation of Hemant Soren on Wednesday, deepening a political crisis.

The Governor appointed Champai Soren as the CM designate and asked him to decide on the ceremony at his convenience.

The Governor also asked the leaders for a floor test within 10 days of taking the oath of office.

Senior JMM leader Alamgir Alam and lone RJD MLA Styanand Bhokta also took oath of office and secrecy as Cabinet Ministers along with Champai Soren.

Notably, the resignation of former Chief Minister Hemant Soren has triggered a political crisis in Jharkhand as the state is left leaderless without a government for over 36 hours

Earlier on Thursday evening, 38 lawmakers from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Congress, and Rashtriya Janata Dal coalition headed to Birsa Munda Airport to travel to Hyderabad in Telangana due to a delay in government formation in the state. However, because of foggy weather and poor visibility at Ranchi Airport, their chartered flights were unable to receive clearance for takeoff, leading them to return to the circuit house.

Meanwhile, the Jharkand BJP has called an urgent legislature party meeting in Ranchi on Friday, in which apart from Babulal Marandi and senior State leaders, party’s top leaders BL Santosh and LK Vajapey are scheduled to participate.

BCCI secy Shah reappointed as ACC chairman for third successive year

February 1, 2024 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah was on Wednesday appointed as the president of the Asian Cricket Council for a third consecutive term.

Shah’s extension was proposed by the Sri Lanka Cricket president Shammi Silva for the second time and the nomination was unanimously backed by all the members of the ACC at its annual general meeting in Bali.

Shah initially assumed the role in January 2021, succeeding Bangladesh Cricket Board President Nazmul Hassan.

Under Shah’s leadership, the ACC successfully organised the Asia Cup in T20 format in 2022 and in ODI format in 2023.

“I am grateful to the ACC Board for their continued trust.

We must remain committed to ensuring the all-round development of the sport with a special focus on regions where it is still in its infancy.

The ACC is committed to nurturing cricket across Asia,” Shah said in a release.

“Under Shah’s guidance, the ACC has been instrumental in unearthing and promoting new talent in cricketing powerhouses like Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka,” Silva said.

Pankaj Khimji, chairman of Oman Cricket and vice-president of the ACC, also extended congratulations on Shah’s term.

“Today, stakeholders see value in investing in tournaments that the ACC conducts, and I credit him for this major transformation, which will further fuel the growth of the game in the region,” Khimji stated.

Welcoming the reappointment, Hassan said cricket in Asia will continue to prosper under Shah’s leadership, emphasising collaboration with the ACC in furthering this endeavor.

Karnataka: BJP-JDS alliance will win all 28 LS seats, says BJP state president BY Vijayendra

February 1, 2024 by Nasheman

Karnataka BJP president BY Vijayendra.

CHIKKAMAGALURU: Exuding confidence ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, BJP state president BY Vijayendra has predicted that the BJP-JDS alliance will win all the 28 seats in the election, with the Congress drawing a blank.

Speaking at a function at the party office here, where Devaraja Shetty took charge as the new Chikkamagaluru district BJP president on Wednesday, Vijayendra said the Congress is living in false hope that it will win 20 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

“If one looks at the statement of Magadi MLA HC Balakrishna, who said that the five guarantees will be stopped if voters do not ensure the victory of Congress candidates in the LS polls, it seems that the Congress has already accepted its defeat. People are eager to see Narendra Modi as the prime minister again. Development works of the Modi government are giving sleepless nights to Congress leaders,” Vijayendra said.

Admitting that the BJP suffered a setback in the Assembly polls due to its own mistakes, the party state chief expressed confidence that the BJP will romp home to power by winning 130 to 140 seats in the next Assembly election. “The state is reeling under drought. Over 500 farmers have committed suicide. But the state government has not come out with any scheme to bail out the farmers. It is only dangling a carrot in the name of guarantees in front of the people,” he said.

Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka alleged that CM Siddaramaiah was playing divisive politics by causing fissures among castes. “He hates saffron colour. Siddaramaiah may have Rama in his name, but he has Tipu in his heart,” he claimed.

Hoist Hanuman flag on all homes in Keragodu other villages says BJP

February 1, 2024 by Nasheman

MYSURU: BJP is planning to organise people in Keragodu village of Mandya district against the ruling Congress for bringing down the Hanuman flag that led to a controversy. The saffron party also exhorted the villagers at Keragodu and a dozen villages around it to hoist Hanuman flags on all their houses.

Though many houses are already flying the flag, BJP wants all of them to do it “to send out a message to the government”.

On Wednesday, a delegation of saffron party leaders visited the village and interacted with those injured in the lathicharge. They held a meeting with village headmen and panchayat members to plan the next course of the agitation.

The BJP delegation comprising district party president Indresh, leaders Ashok Jayaram and others criticised the police for picking up a ninth standard student, a minor, for interrogation for damaging the publicity material of Congress leaders during the protest.

When the team reached the boy’s house, his father Papanna closed the door and requested the leaders to leave, saying the family is not interested in politics. Indresh consoled him and assured the family that they would stand by them.

He alleged that the police have created a fear among innocent villagers.

Ashok Jairam said they heard the villagers, panchayat members and Gowrishankar Seva Trust members. He alleged that the police misbehaved inhumanly with the villagers, while officers have not had time to hold a peace meeting in the village. The Congress government has turned into a British Raj, picking a minor boy for interrogation in the early hours, worrying women and children, he added.

Gowrishankara Seva Trust member Anand said all the residents of the village had supported hoisting Hanuman flag on the 108 ft flagpost, but a few vested interests are dividing people. The district administration violated the flag code by hoisting a national flag disproportionate to the size of the flagpole, he added. “We had taken Siddaramaiah in a procession of 101 bullocks to inaugurate the Kannada Rajyotsava celebration in Keragodu. But he has forgotten Keragodu. The district administration should hold peace meetings and set right the lapses. We want the case to be handed over to the CBI. We want Justice and peace,” he added.

Incident must not cast shadow on Shivarathri: Panchayat member

Keragodu Panchayat member Shivanand, supported by Congress, on Wednesday urged the district administration to hold a peace meeting to bring back harmony as the village is planning a grand Shivarathri. He said they always celebrate Shivarthri in a grand manner and this incident should not cast a shadow over it. The request to put up a flagpost came before the panchayat and it was approved unanimously at the meeting. The panchayat chief executive officer came to the village after the flag was hoisted, and the members told her that the panchayat had cleared the villagers’ request, he narrated. Though members sought a week to hold a peace meeting, she did not give time and asked them about the need to bring down the flag on a holiday, he said.
