Scindia likely to figure in BJP’s 5th list for MP polls

October 13, 2023 by Nasheman

Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia

BHOPAL:  As the ruling BJP prepares to release its fifth list of candidates – which could be its final list – for the assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh scheduled on November 17, political circles are abuzz with the possibility of Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia or a close aide being named to enter the election fray.

The BJP which was waiting for PM Narendra Modi’s return from Uttarakhand for the final seal of approval on the next list, has already named candidates for 136 out of 230 seats and the next list could have the names of remaining 94 candidates.

The possibility of Scindia or someone very close to him, had been triggered last month, after his aunt and MP sports minister Yashodhara Raje Scindia (fourth-time sitting MLA from Shivpuri seat) announced to opt out of the assembly polls race, reportedly on health grounds.

As per speculation, the union minister and four times former MP from Guna Lok Sabha seat, may be asked by the party to make his assembly polls debut from any of the three seats, Shivpuri, Kolaras (both in Shivpuri district) or Bamori seat of Guna district, currently held by his loyalist minister Mahendra Sisodiya.

But with the party’s next list likely to be the one in which 25-30 out of the 67 remaining sitting MLAs may be denied ticket (including Scindia loyalist ministers OPS Bhadoriya, Suresh Dhakad, Brijendra Yadav and Mahendra Bhadoriya), speculations gained momentum about Scindia being fielded from one of the three seats. With successive internal surveys of the BJP believed to be not suggesting a rosy picture for the party in the 34-seats strong Gwalior-Chambal region, Scindia or someone close to him being fielded in next month’s polls.

First flight under Operation Ajay brings back 212 Indians

October 13, 2023 by Nasheman

A flight carrying the first batch of Indians, who were stranded in Israel amid the ongoing war, landed in New Delhi under ‘Operation Ajay’ on Friday morning.

The latest Israel-Palestine war, ignited by a wide-ranging attack by the militant group Hamas on Israel, has already claimed thousands of lives on both sides.

The immediate trigger was Hamas militants firing thousands of rockets and sending fighters — through land, air and sea — into Israeli towns near the Gaza Strip during a major Jewish holiday (Simchat Torah) in a deadly offensive branded “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood”.

Israel has been responding to Saturday’s attack with a massive bombardment of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to “crush and destroy” Hamas.

Palestinians says palastines are paying the price in strikes on Gaza, a small coastal strip of land (140 square miles) packed with 2.3 million residents, which has been blockaded for more than 15 years.

A spokeswoman for Gisha, an Israeli human rights group, warned that the “Israeli decisions to cut electricity, fuel, food and medicine supplies” would severely affect Palestinians.

The conflict is expected to continue to escalate.

Rajasthan assembly polls now on November 25, says Election Commission

October 13, 2023 by Nasheman

Rajasthan assembly polls now on November 25, says Election Commission

New Delhi: The Election Commission on Wednesday changed the date of polling for the Rajasthan assembly elections from November 23 to November 25 citing “large-scale” weddings and social engagements.

In a statement, the EC said the decision was taken following representations made by various parties and social organisations for a change of the date of poll “considering large-scale wedding/social engagements on that day (November 23) which may cause inconvenience to large number of people, various logistic issues and may lead to reduced voters participation during poll”.

“The Commission, having considered these factors and representations, has decided to change the date of poll from 23rd November, 2023 (Thursday) to 25th November, 2023 (Saturday),” it added.

The counting of votes will take place as scheduled on December 3, along with the same for four other state assembly polls.

The poll panel announced the assembly poll schedule for Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram on Monday.

Karthyayani Amma, with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan

Thiruvananthapuram: One hundred and one-year old Karthyayani Amma, who made history by becoming the oldest learner under the Kerala State Literacy Mission, has died at her residence in coastal Alappuzha district.

She was bedridden for some time after suffering a stroke and died on Tuesday.

She would be cremated on Thursday with state honours, the Alappuzha district administration said.

The Alappuzha ADM visited Karthyayani Amma’s residence in Cheppad village of the district and offered a floral wreath, it said.

Karthyayani Amma had shot to fame not only for being the oldest student, at the age of 96, under the southern state’s literacy mission, but also for scoring the highest marks in the ‘Aksharalaksham’ test, a fourth standard equivalent examination.

The nonagenarian was the oldest among the 43,330 candidates who appeared for the test. She also received the Nari Shakti award from former president Ram Nath Kovind on Women’s Day in March, 2020.

In 2019, she became a Commonwealth of Learning Goodwill Ambassador.

Social media was abuzz today with condolence messages from people from all walks of lives on her demise.

Expressing his condolences, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan said Karthyayani Amma inspired many people to learn and continue their education.

“Heartfelt condolences on the sad demise of Smt. Karthyayani Amma, honored with #NariShaktiPuraskar for determination to learn and pass the literacy exam at the age of 96, inspiring many people to learn and to continue their education. May her soul attain mukti,” the Governor said in a Facebook post.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in his condolence message, recalled meeting her after she won the award and indicating her desire to study further and get a job after clearing the 10th standard.

“There was confidence and determination in those words,” Vijayan said in a Facebook post.

He also posted a condolence message on the social media platform X in which the CM said Karthyayani Amma served as an inspiring role model for many through her unwavering determination to pursue education despite challenges.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of Karthyayani Amma, who made history by becoming the oldest learner under the State Literacy Mission. She served as an inspiring role model for many, showing unwavering determination to pursue education despite challenges.

“Her demise is a significant loss to our literacy movement, which helped shape modern Kerala. Heartfelt condolences,” he said.

Leader of Opposition in the state assembly V D Satheesan also condoled her death and said Karthyayani Amma’s was an example of what one can achieve through determination and will power.

State General Education Minister V Sivankutty too condoled the demise of Karthyayani Amma.

“Amma, who grew up under circumstances where she could not study and became literate at the age of 96, is a symbol of determination,” he said.

Former Leader of Opposition in the state assembly and the MLA from Haripad, Ramesh Chennithala, also expressed grief over her death.

He recalled, in a Facebook post, that in the last Republic Day parade, a float of Karthyayani Amma was also there.

Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar also took to social media to convey his condolences.

“Saddened to hear about the demise of Smt. Karthyayani Amma, at the age of 101 years. By passing literacy examinations with top marks at the age of 96, she became inspirational to many of the deprived to venture into the world of literacy.

“My condolences to her family and friends. Om Shanti,” he said in a Facebook post.

Karthyayani Amma, a widow and mother of six hailing from Alappuzha’s Haripad municipality in Kerala, swept the streets outside temples in her village to bring up the children.

Mysuru: BJP leader objects to MP Pratap Simha’s opposition to ‘Mahisha Dasara’ celebration

Mysuru: BJP leader objects to MP Pratap Simha's opposition to 'Mahisha Dasara' celebration

Mysuru: In a surprising turn of events, senior BJP leader Giridhar has raised objections to Member of Parliament (MP) Pratap Simha’s stance against the ‘Mahisha Dasara’ celebration, asserting that the MP is misusing his position within the party.

Giridhar has urged the Karnataka government and Mysuru district authorities to allow the observance of ‘Mahisha Dasara’ as it holds significance as a local tradition during the Dasara festivities.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Press Club in Mysuru on Wednesday, Giridhar emphasized that every citizen has the constitutional right to worship a deity of their choice. He condemned Pratap Simha’s attempt to oppose ‘Mahisha Dasara,’ highlighting that it was the MP’s personal opinion and not a party directive. Giridhar pointed out that Pratap Simha lacks the authority to interfere with an age-old convention, stressing that the MP does not own the Chamundi Hills, a revered place visited by people of all religions.

Giridhar asserted that the local BJP in Mysuru supports the ‘Mahisha Dasara’ tradition and expressed disappointment at Pratap Simha’s attempts to curtail it. He revealed that the MP’s statement, claiming that 5,000 people would protest against the convention, did not resonate with the local BJP members. Giridhar urged the Mysuru authorities to permit the residents to observe ‘Mahisha Dasara’ without hindrance.

In a scathing criticism of Pratap Simha, Giridhar stated that the MP, despite being elected to the Lok Sabha to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been acting unilaterally without consulting others. Giridhar accused Pratap Simha of making derogatory statements about Muslims, damaging the party’s reputation in the state. He stressed the need for the BJP to rein in members like Pratap Simha to ensure the party’s unity and effectiveness in the upcoming political endeavors.

‘Angry’ over girls smoking, 70-year-old man sets cafe on fire in Indore

October 13, 2023 by Nasheman

Indore: A 70-year-old man set a cafe on fire in Indore apparently he was furious after finding girls smoking there, an official said on Wednesday. The senior citizen targeted the recreation venue on Tuesday night when it was closed, the official said.

The accused was taken into custody after he was identified through CCTV footage, said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Dandotia.

Without sharing his details, the official said that the accused had retired from the Department of Telecommunications.

“During initial interrogation, the accused said that he did not like girls smoking in this cafe, hence he got angry and set it on fire,” he said.

Police officials, however, said that the accused is repeatedly changing his statement. The exact reason for the arson can be determined only after the completion of the investigation, they said.

Though the senior citizen set the cafe, located under the jurisdiction of Lasudia police station, on fire when there was nobody inside, it was completely gutted. The owner suffered a loss of nearly Rs 4 lakh due to the arson, Dandotia said.

Dandotia said that a case has been registered against the accused under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house, etc).

Another police official said that the cafe owner told the investigators that the accused had been roaming around his establishment for the last several days.

Bareilly: A 17-year-old girl lost one hand and both her legs after she was hurled before a train here by a youth for objecting to sexual harassment, her family alleged on Wednesday. Her condition is critical, doctors say.

The girl suffered multiple fractures in the incident that took place in the CB Ganj area of Bareilly City on Tuesday, police said.

One person has been arrested and three policemen have been suspended for negligence in connection with the incident, the District Magistrate said.

According to the father of the girl, his daughter was returning from her coaching centre Tuesday evening around 4.30, when one Vijay Maurya of their village stopped her and indulged in indecent talk and harassed her.

The father in his complaint said that Maurya was following his daughter and was seen by another youth.

On the basis of his complaint, Maurya was booked under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 342 (forcibly restraining someone), 504 (intentional insult), 354 D (outraging the modesty of a woman), and 326 (causing grievous hurt by dangerous means) of the IPC and also sections of the POCSO Act, police said.

The girl, who is an intermediate student, ran towards Khadau to save herself but Maurya pushed her in front of a train as a result of which, her legs and one hand got amputated, according to her father’s complaint.

The girl was found in a bloodied state with her legs and one hand amputated near the Khadau railway crossing. She was admitted to a private hospital where she was operated on.

The father said he had raised the matter with Maurya’s family about harassment of his daughter but nothing came out of it.

It was originally alleged that two people threw the girl before the train, but the FIR names only Maurya, while another person has been named as a witness to the incident.

Bareilly District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar told reporters that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had taken cognisance of the matter and an assistance of Rs 5 lakh would be provided to the girl’s family.

Considering the seriousness of her condition, she is being shifted to a higher medical facility. The government will bear the entire cost of her treatment, Kumar said.

Senior officials visited the girl in hospital to enquire about her health.

Hospital Director Dr OP Bhaskar said the girl’s legs were amputated below the knee. She also lost a hand in the incident. Her condition is worrying.

The CB Ganj Police Station Inspector in-charge Ashok Kumar Kamboj, a sub-inspector Nitesh Kumar Sharma, and beat constable Akashdeep were suspended and a departmental inquiry was ordered by Senior Superintendent of Police Chandrabhan.

SP City Rahul Bhati has been directed to probe the case, a senior official said.

The girl’s father alleged that he had complained to the police about the matter but they did not even visit their village to investigate.

Rohit Sharma overtakes Sachin Tendulkar to record most centuries in World Cup history

Rohit Sharma overtakes Sachin Tendulkar to record most centuries in World Cup history

New Delhi: Captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday became the first Indian to score seven world cup hundreds, surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar during their clash against Afghanistan here.

While Tendulkar recorded six centuries in as many editions of World Cups that he played — 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011, Rohit achieved the feat in only three: 2015, 2019 and 2023.

Rohit also holds the record of scoring most centuries (five) by any batter in a World Cup edition — a feat that he achieved in 2019 in England.

Rohit’s ton against Afghanistan was his 31st overall, taking him past Australian legend Ricky Ponting. He is now behind India’s Virat Kohli (47) and Tendulkar (49) in the history of ODI cricket.

Rohit also broke Kapil Dev’s (72) record of fastest ODI century for India in World Cup history, moving into triple figures off just 63 balls (12x4s, 4x6s).

In imperious form during India’s chase of 273 against Afghanistan, Rohit also went past West Indies’ Chris Gayle (553 sixes across formats) to record most sixes hit in international cricket across formats.

Rohit completed his half-century off just 30 balls second fastest in the edition so far while hitting three sixes and seven fours to make 60 unbeaten off 32 balls at the end of the eighth over.

Rohit unleashed his signature pull shot to hit Afghanistan bowler Naveen-Ul-Haq on the penultimate ball of the eighth over to overtake Gayle. Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi is third in the list with overall 476 sixes.

In the process, the Indian skipper also joined Australia’s David Warner in taking least number of innings (19) to complete 1,000 runs in World Cup history.

Among other Indians, Tendulkar (20) and Sourav Ganguly (21) feature among those with quickest to 1,000 runs in World Cups.

India beat Afghanistan by 8 wickets in World Cup

New Delhi (PTI): India continued their winning run with an eight-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the World Cup here on Wednesday.

Chasing 273 to win, Rohit Sharma went on a six-hitting spree, smashing an 84-ball 131 to record the most number of centuries in World Cup history, while Ishan Kishan (47), Virat Kohli (55 not out) and Shreyas Iyer (25 not out) chipped in with use contributions as the hosts romped home in 35 overs.

Rohit and Ishan shared a 156-run partnership for the opening wicket to set the platform for the chase.

Earlier, Afghanistan posted 272 for 8 after opting to bat.

Skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (80) and Azmatullah Omarzai (62) struck fine fifties but Afghanistan had a slump between 35th to 45th over as they eventually just managed a decent score.

For India, Jasprit Bumrah (4/39) was the pick of the bowlers while Hardik Pandya (2/43), Kuldeep Yadav (1/40) and Shardul Thakur (1/31) also contributed well.

Brief Score:

Afghanistan: 272 for 8 in 50 overs (Hashmatullah Shahidi 80, Azmatullah Omarzai 62; Jasprit Bumrah 4/39).

India: 273 for 2 in 35 overs (Rohit Sharma 131, Virat Kohli 55 not out, Ishan Kishan 47; Rashid Khan 2/57).

New Delhi : The Cauvery Water Regulation Committee has asked Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu by October 31, sources said on Wednesday.

The decision was taken on Tuesday at a meeting where the CWRC asked Karnataka to ensure the release of water from its reservoirs in Biligundlu, they said.

The order will be effective from October 16 till October 31.

Tamil Nadu had requested for release of 16,000 cusecs of water.
