September 10, 2024 by Nasheman

Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress hailed the Supreme Court direction asking protesting doctors in West Bengal to resume work by 5PM on Tuesday and said the primary duty of the medics is to save lives and this commitment cannot be compromised.

The top court on Monday directed the CBI to submit a fresh report by September 17 on the probe in the rape and murder case of a postgraduate medic at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud perused the report filed in a sealed cover by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the CBI.

The Supreme Court also directed the protesting doctors to resume work by 5 pm on Tuesday and said no adverse action shall be taken if they resume duty.

“Protests can’t be at the cost of duty.”- Hon’ble Chief Justice of India We express our gratitude to #SupremeCourt for stepping in & directing doctors, who have been abstaining from their duties over the R G Kar tragedy, to return to work by 5 PM tomorrow. Bengaluru court sentences TN man to 3 years in jail for molesting minor on flight

September 10, 2024 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: A fast-track special court has sentenced a 51-year-old man from Tamil Nadu to three years of imprisonment for sexually harassing a minor girl during a Doha-Bengaluru flight.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Ammawasai Murugesan.

The incident took place on June 27, 2023, when Murugesan, under the influence of alcohol, inappropriately touched the minor girl while on the flight. The girl’s mother objected to his actions, after which flight attendants changed their seats.

Upon landing, the girl’s father reported the matter to Kempegowda International Airport police, leading to Murugesan’s arrest under Section 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He was granted bail on July 27, 2023.

During the trial, the victim testified via video link as she was abroad.

Last week, the Additional District and Sessions Fast-Track Special Court in Bengaluru Rural district found Murugesan guilty and convicted him under the POCSO Act.

The court order stated that if Murugesan fails to pay the fine, he would face an additional three months of imprisonment. Half of the fine amount — Rs 5,000 — is to be paid as compensation to the victim.

The court also noted that Murugesan is entitled to set off the time he spent in judicial custody from June 28 to July 27, 2023, against his sentence.

The court has granted Murugesan bail to appeal against the conviction, citing his cooperative behavior throughout the trial and regular attendance in court hearings. Under Section 389(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), he can remain out on bail until the appeal period expires.

Farooq Abdullah assures restoration of statehood for Jammu & Kashmir if NC-Congress alliance wins

Farooq Abdullah assures restoration of statehood for Jammu & Kashmir if NC-Congress alliance wins
National Conference (NC) leader Farooq Abdullah

Jammu: National Conference (NC) leader Farooq Abdullah asserted that the alliance between NC and Congress would restore statehood to Jammu & Kashmir if they win the upcoming assembly elections. Addressing the media on Sunday, Abdullah expressed confidence in the alliance’s victory and emphasised their commitment to the cause.

Abdullah’s statement came in response to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks at a BJP rally in Jammu on Saturday. Shah accused the NC-Congress alliance of misleading the public on the statehood issue, reiterating that only the central government has the authority to restore it.

Jammu & Kashmir lost its statehood in October 2019 when the region was reorganized into two Union Territories—Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh. Despite the abrogation of Article 370, Abdullah pointed out that terrorism has not ended in the Valley, challenging the BJP’s claims.

Jammu & Kashmir is set to go to the polls on September 18, 25, and October 1, with the results to be announced on October 8.

EC has registered party, will emerge as primary political force in Tamil Nadu: Actor Vijay

Chennai: Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam party founder-president and top Tamil actor Vijay on Sunday announced that the Election Commission has duly registered his outfit and expressed confidence of emerging as the primary political party of Tamil Nadu.

Underscoring that equality is the basic principle of his new party, Vijay said that an application was filed with the EC on February 2 to register Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) as a political party.

After legally considering it, the EC has now registered the TVK as a political party and “has given permission to take part as a registered party in electoral politics. I am happy to share this with you.”

The popular actor, in a statement posted on X, said the “first door has opened for us, which heralds all round success.” Furthermore, he said that by pursuing the path of defined principles and by breaking barriers, his party would rise as the key political party of the Tamil people in Tamil Nadu.

The actor said preparatory work to hold TVK’s first state conference, which will declare the party’s ideology, has commenced and, “please wait for a formal announcement about it.”

The TVK leader’s comment comes against the background of his party functionaries approaching authorities seeking permission to hold the state conference this month at Vikravandi in Villupuram district and police reportedly clearing the decks to conduct the rally.

Last month, Vijay unveiled the party flag and the party anthem.

The formation of the political party was announced by Vijay in February this year.

Deputy CM DK Shivakumar warns officials of action if potholes in B’luru not filled within deadline

September 9, 2024 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar on Sunday warned officials of “merciless action” if the potholes in Bengaluru city were not filled within the 15 days deadline that was set.

Shivakumar, who is also the Minister in-charge of Bengaluru city development had on September 1 set a 15-day deadline to the city civic body Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike to fill potholes across the city, citing a lot of complaints.

“I have held a meeting with Bengaluru city corporation officials, senior officials and Chief Engineers and have told them that the fifteen days deadline I had given, within that time, the work should be completed. 400 staff-engineers who are there should first focus on filling the potholes,” he said.

Addressing reporters here after the meeting, he said on failing to do so merciless action will be taken against those responsible.

“How many will get suspended I don’t know, I have strictly told them that the potholes should be filled within the deadline. I have told them directly. Within their wards, those responsible, however big or small they are, from top to bottom they should be on the streets personally and get the potholes filled, that’s the first priority,” he added.

Shivakumar further said he will personally go around the streets of Bengaluru after the fifteen days. “Who will get suspended I don’t know.”

He also said that forest department officials have been asked to trim the trees to avoid incidents of tree fall due to breeze and rains.

“Trees cannot be cut, trimming should be done, to avoid incidents of tree fall.”

Noting that there are chances of rains in September, Shivakumar said, “so far we have managed without any problem. We have to be cautious now. Things should be monitored from the control room, in case of any rain effects such as water logging and water entering houses, the situation should be managed effectively and efficiently. The Deputy CM said on October 2 Gandhi Jayanti, at all schools in Bengaluru, whether it is corporation or private schools, an oath would be administered to all students on maintaining cleanliness.

“We will take pledge in Vidhana Soudha, and students in their respective schools regarding maintaining cleanliness in their respective areas and creating awareness among people and in their homes.”

Shivakumar said he will be travelling abroad for a week on a personal visit. To a question about the agenda of his trip to the USA and whether he will be meeting any big personalities there, he said, “it is a personal family trip…. no one, I’m going on a personal basis.”

Suspected mpox case under probe, no cause for alarm: Govt

September 9, 2024 by Nasheman

New Delhi: A man who recently travelled from a country experiencing mpox transmission has been identified as a suspected case of the disease, the Union health ministry said on Sunday.

The patient has been isolated at a designated hospital and is currently stable, it said, adding that there is no cause for concern.

Samples have been collected from the man and are being tested to confirm the presence of mpox.

“The case is being managed in line with established protocols, and contact tracing is ongoing to identify potential sources and assess the impact within the country,” the ministry said.

The development of this case is consistent with the earlier risk assessment conducted by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and there is no cause of any undue concern, it said.

The country is fully prepared to deal with such isolated travel-related cases and has robust measures in place to manage and mitigate any potential risk, the ministry added.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) for the second time last month in view of its prevalence and spread across many parts of Africa.

Since the 2022 declaration of PHEIC by WHO, 30 mpox cases have been reported in India. The last case of mpox was detected in March this year.

According to WHO’s earlier statement, 99,176 mpox cases and 208 deaths have been reported from 116 countries since 2022. Last year, the reported cases increased significantly.

The number of mpox cases reported so far this year has exceeded last year’s total, with more than 15,600 cases and 537 deaths.

Mpox is a viral zoonosis with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, although clinically less severe.

According to officials, mpox infections are generally self-limiting lasting between two and four weeks. Mpox patients usually recover with supportive medical care and management.

Transmission of the disease happens through prolonged and close contact with an infected person. It happens largely through the sexual route, direct contact with the body/lesion fluid of the patient, or through the contaminated clothing/linen of an infected person.

Have quit BJP, will join Cong on Sep 13: Former Gondiya BJP MLA Gopaldas Agrawal

Gondia: Maharashtra BJP leader and former MLA Gopaldas Agrawal on Sunday said he was leaving the saffron party and joining the Congress on September 13.

Addressing a press conference, the former MLA from Gondiya said he was leaving the BJP with a heavy heart as its policies were not acceptable and party workers had not worked with full commitment for him.

“I have tendered my resignation from the primary membership of the BJP in a letter to party president JP Nadda. I joined the BJP in 2019 to contest the assembly polls but faced defeat at the hands of Independent candidate Vinod Agrawal due to lack of cooperation from the party workers,” said Agrawal, who won from the seat on a Congress ticket in 2004, 2009 and 2014.

“I am forced to leave with a heavy heart. I have also spoken about my decision to Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and state BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule. I will return to the Congress on September 13 in the presence of Maharashtra in charge Ramesh Chennithala,” he told reporters.

He claimed senior leaders like Chennithala and others have said the Congress will contest from Gondia in the upcoming assembly polls as part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi but added he was not joining his old party for the sake of a ticket.

Principal arrested for deleting Ganesh Chaturthi post from Kota school’s WhatsApp group

September 9, 2024 by Nasheman

Kota (Rajasthan): A government school principal was arrested here after he allegedly deleted Ganesh Chaturthi greetings posted on the school WhatsApp group, which triggered protests by people of the village, officials said on Sunday.

Villagers held demonstrations outside the school, demanding the removal of Shafi Mohammed Ansari, principal of government senior higher secondary school at Laturi village, they said.

The principal allegedly removed posts that had a picture of Lord Ganesh from a school WhatsApp group. Parents and teachers are part of the group, DSP Narendra Nadar said.

SHO at Bapawar Police Station Uttam Singh said Ansari was arrested for disturbing communal harmony. He was granted bail and released later in the evening, the officer said.

The situation in the village remained normal and peaceful, the SHO said.

According to police, a man posted a Ganesh Chaturthi greetings message on the WhatsApp group, which the principal deleted. The group is named School Management Development Committee or SMDC, the SHO said.

Around two hours later, a school teacher also uploaded a Ganesh Chaturthi greeting in the same group and Ansari allegedly deleted the post again, police said.

After this, some villagers gathered outside the school, held demonstrations against the principal and demanded his removal.

Police rushed to the spot on getting information about the incident, the SHO said.

Police arrested the school principal for alleged breach of communal harmony and initiated proceedings under Section 127 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) against him, he said.

He added that Ansari was granted bail and later released on the same day.
