Former India footballer P Kannan passes away

April 29, 2019 by Nasheman

Kannan played 14 matches for India and suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this month.

Former India footballer Poongam Kannan, who was facing acute financial crisis, died at a city hospital Sunday evening following prolonged illness, family sources said.

He was 80. Kannan is survived by his wife Antoinette and two daughters.

“He breathed his last around 6 pm,” a family source said.

A forward, Kannan played 14 matches for India and suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this month. There was a campaign on various social media platforms to raise funds for the family.

According to his former teammates, Kannan in his heydays dribbled past defenders like a magician.

For about a decade, the former Mohun Bagan and East Bengal forward was diagnosed with “severe osteoarthritis” that compounded his misery as he was a heart patient and had stent-implantation.

Kannan lived with his two daughters and wife in a one-bedroom apartment in a narrow bylane of Jawpur road in Dumdum and the family had made several appeals to his clubs and the state government to foot medical bills of the star of yesteryear.

“We have written to both his former clubs as we needed Rs 5 lakh (in 2009) for his knee replacements. But the only help we got was from East Bengal who had given him Rs 50,000. That’s all. Nobody cares about him now,” Kannan’s wife, Antoinette had told PTI in an interview two years ago.

Kannan was one of the few players of extraordinary calibre to have come to Bengal and had plied his trade both in Mohun Bagan (8 years) and East Bengal (2) and represented India at the 1966 Bangkok Asian Games and 1968 Merdeka Cup before leaving the pitch in 1982.

He also won Santosh Trophy for Bengal twice in a row (1971-73) and was the top-scorer.

It was legendary German coach Dettmar Cramer who had given him the best appreciation by calling him ‘Pele of Asia’ in 1968 when he was invited by the AIFF to conduct a two-week coaching in Mumbai.

Born in Vandavasi in Tamil Nadu, Kannan also played in Bengaluru and Chennai.

He played for four years for Universal RC in the Chennai Football Association (CFA) senior division football league.

Filmmaker-actor J Mahendran

Filmmaker-actor J Mahendran, who is known for directing evergreen films like ‘Uthiri Pookal’ and ‘Mullum Malarum’, passed away today morning. He was 79.

The veteran director was admitted to a hospital in Chennai in a critical condition on March 27.

John Mahendran, son of the ace director, took to social media to share the sad news about the passing away of the ‘Nenjathai Killathey’ director.

The legendary director’s sojourn as an actor in films like Theri, Nimir and Petta was received warmly. He was recently seen in the Atharvaa-starrer Boomerang.

Mahendran is credited for mentoring Rajini during his initial days in the film industry. During several occasions, Rajini has gone on to credit the legendary director for his success.

His mortal remains will be brought to his residence at 10 am, where it will be kept for the public to pay their respects. The funeral will be held at 5 pm.

The veteran director’s journey

Beginning his film career as a scriptwriter with the 1966 film Naam Moovar, he wrote the story and dialogues for classics like Thangappadhakkam and Aadu Puli Aatam before taking the directorial plunge with the 1978 Rajinikanth-starrer Mullum Malarum. His other collaborations with Rajinikanth in films like Johnnyand Kai Kodukkum Kai is widely considered as the films that best showcased the actor in the Superstar.

Many filmmakers like Mani Ratnam and Shankar, credit his 1979 film Uthiri Pookal as one of the finest Tamil films to be made and their inspiration to make films. Never relying on major stars for his directorials, Mahendran helmed a total of 12 films with Saasanam, the Arvind Swamy-Gauthami starrer, which released in 2004 being his last.

After taking a break from cinema for almost a decade, he returned as an actor, and was welcomed warmly. His turn as the primary antagonist in Vijay-Atlee’s Theri was widely appreciated. Mahendran went on to star in many big-ticket films like Seethakaathi, Nimir, and the recently released Boomerang.

Mahendran, who as an Economics student, caught the eye of the late Tamil Nadu CM MG Ramachandran for his bold speech on the commercial constraints in cinema, stayed true to what he espoused and made films that clearly remained on the right side of the line between parallel and commercial cinema, and made films that stood the test of time.

Recently, the filmmaker joined the Blue Ocean Film and Television Academy (BOFTA) in Chennai as the head of the filmmaking and direction course to hone the skills of the next generation of filmmakers.

Vivekananda was also elected to Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council in 2009 and served as Agriculture Minister in Kiran Kumar Reddy cabinet.

He remained loyal to Congress when Jaganmohan Reddy raised a banner of revolt against the party for not picking him as the successor of his father and Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy following his death in a helicopter crash in 2009.

Jagan Reddy had alleged that Congress tried to engineer split in the family by making Vivekananda a Minister. The young leader subsequently floated YSR Congress party.
