M S Dhoni offers to quit captaincy following ODI series loss to Bangladesh

June 22, 2015 by Nasheman

ms-dhoni-Bangladesh

Mirpur: Under-fire India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in a sarcastic tone said that if his removal from captaincy can help Indian cricket move in right direction then he is game for it.

“I am always the one who is responsible for anything bad that happens in Indian cricket. Everything that happens is because of me. Even the Bangladesh media is smiling,” Dhoni gave a tongue-in-cheek reply to a question at the post-match press conference after India suffered the ignominy of their first ever series defeat against Bangladesh.

When the question was asked differently about how long he would continue as captain, he made it clear that he would continue but not before taking a dig at the scribe.

“I am really enjoying my cricket. But when the earlier question was asked, I knew this question one was coming. These questions always keep popping. The media loves me. If it is justifiable if you remove me and the Indian cricket will start doing well, and if I am the reason for all the bad that’s happening to Indian cricket, definitely I would love to step away and play as a player.

“It doesn’t really matter, who is the captain because I was never really in line to become the captain. It was a job or responsibility for me. They want to take it away from me, I am fine,” he said.

Sarfraz counter-attack thwarts Sri Lanka's hopes of lead

Sarfraz Ahmed (R) plays a shot as Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Dinesh Chandimal looks on during the fourth day of the opening Test between Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Galle: Sarfraz Ahmed narrowly missed his fourth Test century but his counter-attack put paid to Sri Lanka’s hopes of a sizeable first-innings lead on the fourth day of the opening Test against Pakistan at Galle on Saturday.

The hosts would have hoped for quick wickets when Pakistan resumed in the morning on 118/5 but a sixth-wicket stand of 139 between Sarfraz (96) and Asad Shafiq (64 not out) thwarted them.

Pakistan reduced their first-innings deficit to 41 by the end of the first session, reaching 259/6 with Wahab Riaz (eight) the other unbeaten batsman.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfraz put Sri Lanka’s disciplined attack in disarray with his innovative batting and hit 13 fours in his 86-ball knock.

A similar unorthodox shot, when he tried to play a sweep against fast bowler Dhammika Prasad, brought about his downfall as the ball took the inside edge and went on to hit the stumps.

The dismissal gave Prasad his third wicket of the innings and Sri Lanka their only success in the session.

Shafiq on the other hand was calm and composed during the partnership and hit three boundaries in his 149-ball stay as he completed his 12th Test half century.

Hosts Bangladesh beat India by 79 runs in first ODI

June 19, 2015 by Nasheman

Bangladesh India Cricket

In a shocker, Bangladesh beat India by 79 runs in the first one-day international to take a 1-0 lead in the three match series. From the beginning of the match, Bangladesh looked in command setting India a target of 308 runs and then getting the visitors all out for 228 in 46 overs.

Initially, the Indian team started well with a 95-runfirst-wicket partnership in 15.5 overs. Rohit Sharma top scored with 63 and Shikhar Dhawan made 30. Suresh Raina tried to make a fight of it with a 40 in 40 deliveries but to no vain.

Top stars captain MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli made five and one respectively. For the hosts Mustafizur Rahman took 5 for 50 to do the damage.

Earlier, Bangladesh put up a gritty batting display to post a strong 307 runs. Openers Taim Iqbal (60) and Soumya Sarkar (54) and middle-order batters Shakib Al Hasan (52) and Sabbir Rahman (41) contributed richly for the hosts to put up a challenging target for their more fancied opponents at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

India’s premier spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was the most successful bowler with 3/51 in his stipulated 10 overs. Pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/37) and Umesh Yadav (2/58) were also among the wickets as India bowled out the home team in 49.4 overs. The home team got a rollicking start to their innings and reached 119/1 in 15.4 overs afterBangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza won the toss and decided to bat before rain could halt the proceedings. Openers Taim Iqbal (60) and Soumya Sarkar (54) punished the Indian bowlers from the very beginning and put the home team in a strong position. They put together a 100-run partnership in only 79 balls. But just when they threatened to take the match away from India, their momentum was broken when Das was run out after getting involved in a mix-up with his partner.

Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin struck for India with three quick wickets and reduced Bangladesh to 147 for four in 24 overs after rain held up the game for about an hour. Tamim suffered a lapse in concentration following the break and lofted Ashwin straight down to Rohit Sharma at long-off. His 62-ball innings contained seven fours and a six. Ashwin trapped debutant Litton Das (8) in front before Mushfiqur Rahim (14) holed out to Sharma at long-on. But Bangladesh recovered from that mini collapse to reach 200 in 34.1 overs riding on a timely 83-run fifth-wicket partnership from Shakib Al Hasan (52) and Sabbir Rahman (41).

Left arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (1/48) finally broke that partnership in the 38th over. But the Indian bowlers were unable to restrict the smooth run flow with Shakib scoring his 29th ODI fifty. Shakib ultimately perished in the 44th over but not before setting up his team for a strong total.

Bangladesh resume play after rain halts first ODI

June 18, 2015 by Nasheman

Soumya Sarkar

Mirpur: Bangladesh resumed their innings after rain halted their march against India in the first One-Day International (ODI) at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium here on Thursday.

The match was stopped for nearly an hour. But no curtailment in overs were announced when the play resumed.

Bangaldesh got a rollicking start to their innings and reached 119/1 in 15.4 overs after skipper Mashrafe Mortaza won the toss and decided to bat.

Taim Iqbal (57 not out) and Litton Das (unbeaten 3) were at the crease when play was stopped because of rain.

Openers Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar (54) punished the Indian bowlers from the very beginning and put the home team in a strong position.

They put together a 100-run partnership in just 79 balls.

But just when they threatened to take the match away from India, their momentum was broken when Das was run out after getting involved in a mix-up with his partner.

Indian spinners make it count but rain rules supreme

June 13, 2015 by Nasheman

harbhajan

Fatullah: The one-off cricket Test between India and Bangladesh seems to be meandering towards a tame draw after incessant rain halted the visiting spinners, who reduced the hosts to 111/3 in the only session of play that was possible on the fourth day here.

Only 30.1 overs could be squeezed in the opening session when bad light stopped play with Imrul Kayes (59 batting) and Shakib Al Hasan (0 batting) at the crease.

Earlier, India declared their first innings on the overnight total of 462/6. Bangladesh still trail by 351 runs but look set to sneak away with a draw thanks to weather gods.

With more than 200 overs lost due to frequent rain interruptions in the previous three days, the Virat Kohli-led visitors came out all guns blazing and picked up the first opposition wicket quite early only to see a bit of resistance from the second-wicket batting pair.

Facing the pace-spin combination of Ishant Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin (2-30), opener Tamim Iqbal (19) became Bangladesh’s highest Test run-getter but soon fell to the guile of the wily off-spinner.

Surpassing former batsman Habibul Bashar (3026 in 50 Tests) to manage 3039 runs in 40 matches, Tamim was stumped while trying to counter Ashwin’s spin. The left-hander’s toe was on the line and the third umpire pushed the red button to send him back to the pavillion.

Mominul (30) joined Kayes (59 not out) at the crease and the duo steadied the Bangladeshi batting with an 81-run stand.

Kayes though was dropped on 10 when Shikhar Dhawan failed to latch on to the flying cherry on his left side as a dejected Umesh Yadav looked on.

Even a brief rain interruption in the 13th over did not spoil the concentration of the left-handed duo as Virat Kohli continued to juggle his regular bowling options.

India end at 462/6 in rain-marred day

June 12, 2015 by Nasheman

BANGLADESH CRICKET

Fatullah: Following an uninterrupted morning session, heavy showers first stopped play twice in the post-lunch session and then completely washed out the final session of play as India ended the third day at 462/6 in their first innings of the lone cricket Test against Bangladesh here on Friday.

Just after lunch, heavy showers delayed play for about an hour after which India came out to bat. The visitors had only scored 25 runs when the skies opened up again. When play resumed, only 6.2 overs could be bowled further when rain struck the Dhaka suburb again, forcing the players back to the pavilion and umpires to call tea.

The players remained in the pavilion as rain did not stop, forcing the third session to be called off at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium. Overall, India scored 223 runs with the Bangladeshi spinners taking full advantage of the conditions to claim six scalps after having gone wicket-less on Day 1.

Keeping in mind the rain, the Indian batsmen went all out to score at more than a run-a-ball in the second session at the same time losing three wickets.

Opening batsman Murali Vijay perished immediately after getting to his 150 when he was adjudged leg-before off ace spinner Shakib Al Hasan (4/105). Wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha (6) also did not last long as he was bowled by 19-year-old leg-spinner Jubair Hossain (2/113).

Ajinkya Rahane (98) continued his charge and went for his shots, scoring boundaries around the ground, totalling 14 fours. However, Shakib struck again, bowling out the right-hander two runs short of what would have been his fourth Test century.

Ravichandran Ashwin (2 not out) and Harbhajan Singh (7 not out) were at the crease when the skies opened up again.

Earlier in the morning, the rain gods finally allowed play after heavy showers curtailed the match on the first day and completely washed out the second.

The first session of play was shared by the hosts and the visitors as Bangladesh finally managed to break the opening wicket partnership between Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan (173) and also bag two more vital wickets — that of ace batsman Rohit Sharma (6) and captain Virat Kohli (14).

At lunch time, Vijay and Rahane looked solid at the crease with India batting at 398/3.

India resumed the day at 239 for no loss and Dhawan, who had scored his third Test century on Wednesday, went about his business in usual fashion. The left-hander was aggressive from the start and attacked the Bangladeshi bowlers — spinners and pacers alike. Vijay also looked good as he brought up his sixth Test hundred.

While trying to accelerate, Dhawan went down the track but ace spinner Shakib read him and pitched to his foot. Dhawan top-edged and offered a catch to the bowler. The caught-and-bowled finally broke the first wicket partnership of 283 runs with Dhawan going back to the pavilion after scoring a brilliant 173 which included 23 boundaries.

Shakib was at it again as he clean bowled Rohit in his next over. The Indian batsman, who replaced regular No.3 Cheteshwar Pujara, totally wasted his opportunity by completely misjudging the delivery which pitched on off and straightened to rattle the off-stump.

Five overs later, skipper Kohli was also walking back to the pavilion as he played on a Hossain ball which rolled on to hit his stumps. Suddenly from 283 for no loss, India were 310/3. But, thereafter, Rahane and Vijay consolidated the innings, taking India close to 400.

India and Bangladesh test: Rain denies second day's play

June 11, 2015 by Nasheman

India and Bangladesh

Fatullah: Heavy showers washed out the second day’s play of the lone Test between India and Bangladesh at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium here on Thursday.

The match was supposed to start half an hour earlier than scheduled as rain washed away 34 overs of play on Wednesday. But heavy rains continued, leading the umpires to call off the day’s play without a ball being bowled.

Only 56 overs were bowled on Day 1 in which India scored 239 runs without losing a single wicket. Openers Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay were unbeaten on 150 and 89, respectively.

India captain Virat Kohli had won the toss and opted to bat. Left-hander Dhawan was in rollicking form as he notched up his third Test century in only 101 balls, his first since February 2014. Vijay was a little slow off the blocks but gradually found his rhythm to end the day at a solid 89 not out, his 11th half-century.

June 10, 2015 by Nasheman

vijay-dhawan

Fatullah: India ended the first day of the one-off Test against Bangladesh at 239 for no loss at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium here on Wednesday.

After opting to bat, Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay piled on runs in the 56 overs they batted in a rain-marred day. Rain wiped out the entire second session and parts of the first and third periods of play.

Dhawan scored his third Test century and was at 150 not out at stumps with partner Vijay batting at 89 not out.

Indian cricket team arrives in Bangladesh

June 8, 2015 by Nasheman

virat_kohli

Dhaka: The Virat Kohli-led Indian cricket team arrived here on Monday morning to play a short series, comprising a Test and three One-Day Internationals (ODI).

The lone Test will be played at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium, Fatullah, Wednesday onwards while the three limited overs matches will be played at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, on June 18, 21 and 24.

The Indian cricketers flew to Kolkata on Friday to undergo a fitness test ahead of their tour.

Following recurrent injuries to players, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), for the first time, decreed that all cricketers must undertake the test before embarking on the tour. So long, only injured players were subjected to fitness tests.

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who played his last Test against Australia in 2013 in Hyderabad, made a comeback into the Test squad, replacing left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja.

Karnataka’s right-handed batsman Lokesh Rahul, who was selected for the series, failed to make it to the neighbouring country because of illness. A replacement has not been named.

India have won six out of seven Tests played between the two countries with one drawn match. The two sides last met in a Test in Mirpur in January 2010, where India emerged victorious by 10 wickets.

Interpol issues six wanted person alerts over FIFA case

by Al Jazeera

Interpol has placed six people, including two former FIFA officials and four corporate executives, on its most wanted list on racketeering and corruption charges at the request of US authorities.

The former FIFA officials are ex-vice president Jack Warner and former FIFA executive committee member, Nicolás Leoz.

The Red Notices issued by Interpol are not international arrest warrants.

However, they are used by the organisation to inform its member countries that an arrest warrant has been issued for an individual by a judicial authority and who seeks the location and arrest of wanted persons with a view to extradition or similar lawful action.

Warner is among nine FIFA officials and five corporate executives charged by the US Department of Justice with running a criminal enterprise that involved more than $150m in bribes.

Meanwhile, FIFA President Sepp Blatter is being investigated by US authorities as part of their corruption inquiry into football’s governing body, the New York Times (NYT) has reported.

Blatter, who announced on Tuesday that he will be resigning from his position, has not been directly implicated in the parallel US and Swiss criminal investigations into FIFA, which were announced last week.

Unidentified US law enforcement officials, however, told the NYT that “they were hoping to win the cooperation of some of the FIFA officials now under indictment and work their way up the organisation” in a bid to build a case against Blatter.

Nine FIFA officials and five business executives were indicted by the US last Wednesday on corruption charges, with seven arrested in Zurich ahead of FIFA’s annual congress on Friday.

Blatter announced his decision to resign on Tuesday, just four days after the congress that saw him win a fifth termas the body’s president.

“I cherish FIFA more than anything and I want to do only what is best for FIFA and for football,” Blatter said at a news conference in Zurich on Tuesday.

“FIFA needs a profound overhaul. I have decided to lay down my mandate at an extraordinary elective Congress.

“I will continue to exercise my functions as FIFA president until that election.”

Domenico Scala, head of FIFA’s independent audit and compliance committee, said there would need to be four months’ notice for any new presidential election.

At the FIFA meeting in Zurich last Friday, Blatter, 79, had been re-elected when his only rival, Jordan’s Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, withdrew after gaining 73 votes to Blatter’s 133 in the first round of voting.

A day later, Blatter came out fighting, implying that the US timed the announcement of a major corruption probe to try to scupper his re-election bid.

Meanwhile, Switzerland’s Office of Attorney General (OAG) has confirmed that it is not investigating Blatter.

Swiss authorities have launched a separate criminal investigation into the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups that are set to be held in Russia and Qatar.

No sooner had Blatter announced his decision to resign than English Football Association chairman Greg Dyke raised the possibility that the controversial vote that awarded Qatar the tournament could be rerun.

“If I was the Qatari organisers I wouldn’t sleep very well tonight,” the former TV executive told British media.

In response, Qatar Football Association’s president, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Bin Ahmed Al Thani, said in a statement that Qatar had been cleared of any wrongdoing in the FIFA-commissioned Garcia report on corruption.

“Having already cooperated fully with Mr Garcia’s investigation – and been subsequently cleared of any wrongdoing – we welcome the Office of the Swiss Attorney General conducting its own work into the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups,” the statement said.

“We would urge Mr Dyke to let the legal process take its course and concentrate on delivering his promise to build an England team capable of winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.”

Former US Attorney Michael Garcia was appointed by FIFA in 2012 with the priority of probing the controversial 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding contests.

He resigned in 2014 after a FIFA judge cleared the World Cup bids, based on his findings – which were never fully released.

At the time, he claimed the judge’s decision contained “numerous materially incomplete and erroneous representations” of his investigation.
