Are gallows also for Mumbai riot convicts, Hindutva terrorists, asks Asaduddin Owaisi

July 23, 2015 by Nasheman

asad-owaisi-on-memon

Mumbai: In a contemptuous attack on the BJP led government for its decision to hang 1993 Mumbai blast convict Yakub Memon, Parliamentarian Asaduddin Owaisi Wednesday wondered if the same punishment will also be given to the perpetrators of Babri Masjid demolition, Mumbai and other riot convicts, and Hindutva terrorists.

“Why haven’t the perpetrators of Babri Masjid demolition been convicted, and will they also be given the capital punishment, as that (demolition of the Babri Masjid) is the original sin”, Owaisi, a barrister who is the president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), said while talking to ummid.com on phone.

Owaisi was commenting on the hanging of Yakub Memon which is slated on July 30 – his birthday. Yakub Memon – a Chartered Accountant, had surrendered with his family members before the Indian authorities after the 1993 Mumbai blasts which had killed over 250 people. The series of blasts took place soon after the deadly riots that followed the demolition of Babri Masjid by Hindu fanatics.

Stating that Sri Krishna Commission report has been kept in cold storage first by the Congress and now by the BJP, Owaisi said, “About one thousand people were killed in communal riots that followed the Babri Masjid demolition. Many police officers were booked under grievous charges, including murder. How many were convicted? All went scot-free.”

Owaisi however declined any comment on Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss Memon’s curative petition saying, ‘it exonerated the Muslims accused in the Akshardham terror attack’.

Owaisi also asked if the Hindutva terrorists – now in jail for their involvements in the Samjhouta Express, Malegaon, Hyderabad Makkah Masjid and Ajmer blasts, will also be given the same punishment as Yakub Memon.

“Will Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, Col Purohit and Swami Aseemanand get capital punishment. This is upto the NIA to prove their guilt in courts”, Owaisi said.

Drawng parallel between Mumbai blasts and Rajive Gandhi assassination, Owaisi said the killers were shown mercy because they have political backing.

“Rajiv Gandhi and Beant Singh killers have backing of political parties. That is why they have not been sent to gallows”, he said.

Recalling how Memon surrendered before the Indian authorities and helped in the investigations, Owaisi said, “I agree with Siddharth Vardharajan (noted journalist) who said that why hang Yakub Memon when he proved Pakistani involvement in the 1993 Mumbai bombing.”

Owaisi also said that Maya Kodnani and Babu Bajrangi – both convicted to life for killing 97 Muslims during the 2002 Gujarat riots, but the Modi government did not allow appeal to enhance their punishment to death.

Hyderabad: AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has kicked up a row by questioning the Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan awards being given to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and BJP patriarch L K Advani.

How can the country’s second highest civilian honour, Padma Vibhushan, be given to Advani who was facing criminal cases (in connection with the Babri masjid demolition), Owaisi said here at a book release function last night.

“The same L K Advani who spread destruction in the country with his ‘Rathyatra’…This could probably be the first instance of Padma Vibhushan being given to a person who is facing criminal cases,” the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen leader said.

As to Vajpayee, Owaisi alleged that the BJP stalwart had made some controversial comments on the Ayodhya issue, the videos of which were available on the YouTube.

“Have we forgotten December 5 (1992)? The same Atal Bihari Vajpayee who had said ‘we are going to level the ground’ (has been now given the Bharat Ratna),” he claimed.

Asaduddin Owaisi: AIMIM will contest BBMP polls

May 4, 2015 by Nasheman

asaduddin-owaisi

Mysuru: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president and Member of Parliament Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday said that his party would field candidates in the upcoming elections to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

The Hyderabad-based party had performed well in the elections to the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation held recently.

Owaisi, who is on a private visit to the city, hit out at the Congress and the state government for imposing a ban on his entry to Bengaluru city.

The emergence of AIMIM in Maharashtra has started to haunt the Congress, Owaisi said and added that the party (Congress) had not learnt a lesson from the poll debacle in Maharashtra.

In an interaction with media persons, he said that Muslims and dalits face common issues like poverty, high rate of school dropouts, less graduates and social discrimination.

Owaisi said that there was no law and order problem after he addressed a meeting near Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada district.

Owaisi said that he has appealed in the High Court against the ban order.

“I can speak in the Indian Parliament, but not on the streets of Bengaluru… they are afraid of me,” the MP added.

“If they (Congress) have done so much (for dailts and Muslims), why is that in 2009 and 2014 elections not even a single Muslim was elected to the Parliament from Karnataka…How many Muslim MLAs are there in the Assembly…?” he asked.

He charged that successive state governments have failed to develop areas with a large Muslim population in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region of the state like Kalaburagi, Bidar and other places.

Owaisi hits out at Sena, seeks action against 'Saamana' editor

April 13, 2015 by Nasheman

asaduddin-owaisi

Hyderabad: Hitting out at Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut for demanding revocation of voting rights of Muslims, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi today said the BJP cannot dissociate itself from his statement and asked it to take action against him.

“He (Raut) has no right whatsoever to seek such a revocation of any Indian. He has no right whatsoever, leave aside Muslims,” Owaisi told PTI here.

“The real agenda of fascist Hindu forces is being exposed now. Their ideology is to promote hatred. Shiv Sena is not just an ally of BJP, but they are sharing power. Now does the ruling party (BJP) share the same views?” the MP from Hyderabad sought to know.

“They (BJP) cannot disassociate saying it’s an individual opinion and he (Raut) is a fringe element. They should take action. He is not a fringe element. He is the main element. When PM (Narendra Modi) speaks at a UN forum (during his ongoing foreign visit), their ally speaks like this,” he said.

Owaisi said the comments of Raut, the editor of Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, are also an embarrassment to union ministers Najma Heptulla and Muqtar Abbas Naqvi as their voting rights are also sought to be revoked if one goes by Raut’s argument.

Shiv Sena had yesterday courted controversy by demanding scrapping of voting rights of Muslims, saying the community has often been used for vote bank politics, evoking sharp reactions from several political parties which accused it of trying to inflame passions and divide people.

“Vote bank politics is being played in the name of fighting against the injustice meted out to Muslims. Their educational and health status is being used politically. This politics was once played by the Congress and now every other person calls himself secular,” an editorial in ‘Saamana’ yesterday said.

Under attack, the Sena later sought to downplay the issue, contending that the party is against “appeasement politics”.

Asaduddin Owaisi denied permission to hold meeting in Agra

March 21, 2015 by Nasheman

asaduddin-owaisi

Agra: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Chief Asaduddin Owaisi has been denied permission to hold a meeting here on March 29.

The district administration of Agra took this decision on the basis of intelligence reports which suggested this could lead to trouble after Hindutva organisations had openly declared they would not allow Owaisi to hold his meeting at the scheduled Kothi Meena Bazar ground.

A memorandum by the Bajrang Dal, Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Hindu Jagran Manch workers forced the administration to take the step.

However, district administration official Rajesh Srivastav said permission cannot be granted in view of the ongoing final examinations.

AIMIM’s district chief Idrish Ahmad said the district administration had accepted his affidavit a few days ago to consider permission for the meeting, but changed its mind under pressure from some organisations.

For special treatment, go to Pakistan: Shiv Sena tells Muslims

March 3, 2015 by Nasheman

asaduddin-owaisi

Mumbai: “If the Muslim community in India want any special treatment as Muslims, they should go to Pakistan,” the Shiv Sena warned here Tuesday.

“If they (Muslims) want anything from this country, they must first accept India as their motherland and proclaim ‘Vande Mataram’. They cannot demand freedom and yet continue to cling to their religion,” the party said in a sharp edit in ‘Saamana’ on Tuesday.

The edit was said to be in reaction to All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi’s speech in Nagpur March 1, where among other things, he demanded reservations for the Muslim community on the lines of Marathas in Maharashtra.

Taking umbrage at Owaisi’s tone and tenor, the Shiv Sena reiterated its stance that reservations policy must be based on social criteria and not religious lines.

“The poorest of poor Muslim should be given reservation, not because he is a Muslim, but because he is a citizen of India,” the party declared.

It urged all people – especially Muslims and Hindus – to accept this philosophy, which could eradicate politics of vote-banks and reservations, and help the country’s progress.

“Now, Owaisi is insisting that since reservations have been given to Marathas, even Muslims must be granted the same. It was exactly such a stubborn attitude of anti-Hindu hardliner Muslims which resulted in the partition of India and they had created Pakistan,” the Sena said.

But, not anymore, the Sena warned.

Listing the requirements, ‘Saamana’ said Muslims must accept the uniform civil code, embrace family planning and give up the demand for Article 370 pertaining to the special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Blasting Owaisi, it said the day when such leaders stop brainwashing the Muslims with their hate politics, it would spell a new era for the country.

“Owaisi claims that Muslims have suffered a lot in India. Has he bothered to calculate how much Hindus have suffered with the Muslim fundamentalism, terror activities, bomb blasts and communal riots,” it pointed out.

Demanding that such a speech by Owaisi should be treated as ‘anti-national’, the Sena demanded an investigation to ascertain whether he has taken a ‘contract’ to create communal disturbances in Maharashtra, and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis must take action in the matter.

Asaduddin Owaisi banned from entering Bengaluru till February 25

February 20, 2015 by Nasheman

asaduddin-owaisi

Bengaluru: Police on Thursday banned All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi from entering Bengaluru till February 25 but permitted the Hyderabad-based party to conduct a meeting at Chhota Maidan in Shivajinagar on Saturday.

The party had approached the police for permission to conduct the event. “Permission was granted only after examining the programmes for the event. But Owaisi is banned from entering Bengaluru for seven days. He is known for his provocative and inflammatory speeches and we do not want to take any chances. He also has several criminal cases against him in various states of the country,” a senior police officer said.

Police have given strict instruction to the AIMIM not to conduct the meeting beyond the stipulated timing: 3-5 pm. They cannot broadcast Owaisi’s speech either. If the organisers are found breaking the guidelines, they will be dealt with as per law, the officer added.

Meanwhile, Owaisi on Thursday resorted to “Gandhigiri” to protest denial of permission to address a public meeting in Bangaluru.

Owaisi insisted additional police commissioner Noorullah Shareef to accept flowers much to the amusement of onlookers as he came to his office to serve the notice barring his entry into Bangaluru from February 19-25.

The Bangaluru police had first granted and then revoked permission for Owaisi’s public meeting on February 8.

The MIM moved the Karnataka high court against the permission withdrawal. The police informed the party that permission would be accorded if an application was filed with the DCP (east), which resulted in the notice on Thursday.

“The notice has pained me as an Indian, who can speak in the Parliament but not in Bengaluru. I have cases against me and I am innocent until proven guilty,” said Owaisi.

“I am sure that the courts will do justice to me. As a citizen of India, I accept your notice but reject its contentions.”

Bengaluru sub-inspector suspended for permitting Owaisi public function

February 6, 2015 by Nasheman

Asaduddin Owaisi Bhatkal

Bengaluru: A sub-inspector has been suspended by the Bengaluru City Police Commissionerate for permitting All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi to hold a public function in Shivaji Nagar, here on February 8.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad is organising its Virat Hindu Samavesha on the same day.

As per procedure, permission for such public meetings should be given by an officer of the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police or above. Moreover, the sub-inspector had not informed higher-ups about the program, which shows negligence on his part, said Deputy Commissioner of Police Satish Kumar.

The sub-inspector attached to Commercial Street police station had given permission based on a request by the local unit of MIM. A senior police officer cancelled the permission and asked the MIM to select another date before drawing attention of senior officers.

AIMIM withdraws plea

Meanwhile, AIMIM on Thursday withdrew its petition questioning cancellation of permission to hold a public meeting in Shivaji Nagar on February 8.

The petition was withdrawn after the State pointed out that an application in terms of licensing order 2005, related to controlling of public places, was required to be filed for organising a public event. The court has given AIMIM the liberty to make an application to the competent authority as per law to organise a meeting on a different date.

HC grants permission to AIMIM to hold party meet in Bengaluru

February 5, 2015 by Nasheman

Asaduddin Owaisi Bhatkal

Bengaluru: After being denied permission by the police for All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen party (AIMIM) meet in Shivajinagar’s Chhota Maidan, the High Court of Karnataka has granted permission to the party to hold a meeting in the city.

Speaking to Nasheman, a party official said that the HC has granted the party the permission to hold the meeting on either 16th, 17th or 18th of the month. He said, the party will announce the date, once they consult the party president and member of parliament Asaduddin Owaisi.

Owaisi was supposed to visit the city and address a public meeting in Shivajinagar on February 8, the same day the Vishwa Hindu Parishat (VHP) is planning to organise the ‘Hindu Viraat Samavesha’.

Anticipating communal tension, as a result of both events being held on the same day, the Bengaluru police are in no mood to give MIM permission for the meeting.

“A low-level police officer, of the rank of assistant sub-inspector at the Commercial Street Police Station, without applying his mind and anticipating consequences, issued an endorsement for the MIM local unit’s application seeking permission to hold the public meet in Shivajinagar on February 8. On discovering this, high-ranking officers stepped in and cancelled the permission, asking MIM to select another date for the event,” a senior police officer said. By doing so, we have averted a big showdown and communal flare-up, he added.

Bengaluru: Permission denied for Asaduddin Owaisi rally; party approaches HC

February 3, 2015 by Nasheman

asaduddin-owaisi

Bengaluru: The Bengaluru city police has denied permission for a gathering where the chief of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Asaduddin Owaisi was expected to deliver a speech.

After making a foray into Maharashtra politics, the Hyderabad-based Majlis Ittehadul Muslimin (MIM) party, led by Member of Parliament, Asaduddin Owaisi intends to enter the Karnataka political arena.

An inquiry has been ordered to find out how an ASI-rank policeman endorsed an event without consulting higher-ups, sources said.

Despite this, if the organisers hold any programme, we will take action against them as per the law, another police officer said.

According to sources, the police are likely to permit the event on Tuesday if organisers submit an undertaking that they will restrict the schedule to agreed programmes and avoid the visit of controversial VHP leader, Praveen Togadia.

“The VHP programme and Owaisi’s visit on the same day will not do any good for the city’s peaceful atmosphere. Owaisi’s speech may ignite trouble or counter forces may take advantage of it and provoke a communal situation. We do not want to trouble,” a police official said.

Speaking to Nasheman an AIMIM official informed that the party has approached the Karnataka High Court, and would then decide on our course of action.

Incidentally, the Pune city police has denied permission for a similar gathering.
