World T20: Gayle’s unbeaten ton blows away England

March 17, 2016 by Nasheman

chris-gayle

Mumbai: Swashbuckling West Indian batsman Chris Gayle blasted an unbeaten 100 in just 48 balls to steer his side to a comfortable six wicket victory against England in their Group 1 World Twenty20 cricket clash at the WankhedeStadium here on Wednesday.

Batting first, England posted 183/6 in 20 overs, thanks to Joe Root’s 48.

In reply, the hard-hitting batsman from Caribbean unleashed his batting skills as he struck five boundaries and 11 massive sixes to take his team to victory as the team scored 183/4 in 18.1 overs.

Chasing a challenging target of 183, West Indies got off to a disappointing start losing opener Johnson Charles (0) off the second bowl off the innings.

But his opening partner, Gayle played sensibly without taking any undue risk.

Gayle was well supported in the other end by incoming batsman Marlon Samuels (37 off 27). The duo added crucial 55 runs partnership for the second wicket to take team’s score past 50-run mark.

But leg-spinner Adil Rashid broke the partnership in the seventh over dismissing Samuels.

Wickets in the other end did not stop Gayle from scoring as he took some calculated risks to bring up his half-century off just 27 balls.

Dinesh Ramdin (12) held on in the other end along with Gayle but a silly shot from the wicket-keeper batsman in the 12th over saw him head back to the pavilion, leaving West Indies at 103/3.

Gayle stayed calm, composed and took on the bowling to bring up his ton in just 47 balls. He was well assisted by Andre Russell (15 not out) as the duo ensured their side got past England’s total to register their first victory of the competition.

David Willey, Reece Topley, Rashid and Moeen Ali claimed one wicket each for England.

Earlier put into bat on a green-top wicket, openers Alex Hales (27) and Jason Roy (15) gave England a positive start scoring 36 off the first four overs.

But medium pacer Russell brought the first breakthrough in the third ball off the fifth over by dismissing Roy.

Incoming batsman Joe Root (48) along with opener Hales scored at a good pace from there on to bring up a 50-run partnership for the second wicket in just 34 balls and take the score past 80 in 10 overs.

But as Hales was looking good after striking four boundaries, off-spinner Sulieman Benn castled the right-handed batsman in the 12th over to reduce England to 92/2.

England received yet another blow as set batsman Root, looking good to bring up his half-century, fell short as he tried to go over the top and was eventually caught at mid-off by Jerome Taylor off the bowling off Russell.

England lost the momentum losing two wickets in quick succession reaching 114/3 in 14.2 overs.

A late assault by Jos Buttler (30 off 20), aided by skipper Eoin Morgan (27 not out off 14) and Ben Stokes (15 off 7) helped them reach a respectable total.

Andre Russell (2/36) and Dwayne Bravo (2-41) were the pick of bowlers for the West Indies.

Brief score: England 182/6 in 20 overs (Joe Root 48; Andre Russell 2-36, Dwayne Bravo 2-41) vs West Indies 183/4 in 18.1 overs (Chris Gayle 100 not out; David Willey 1-33, Reece Topley 1-21, Adil Rashid 1-20, Moeen Ali 1-38)

World T20: Pakistan cricket team gets government nod for India

March 11, 2016 by Nasheman

Pakistan Cricket

Islamabad: The Pakistan government on Friday formally decided to send its national men’s and women’s cricket teams to India to take part in the ongoing World T20 tournament.

The national cricket teams are scheduled to fly out to India on Friday night, Geo TV quoted sources here as saying.

The decision came after Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the Pakistan cricket team will be provided adequate security during their World Twenty20 campaign in India.

The Pakistan government had demanded a written assurance from India on providing foolproof security to Pakistan players after protests by serving and retired soldiers of the Indian Army and political leaders in Himachal Pradesh forced the International Cricket Council (ICC) to shift the group match against hosts India from Dharamsala to Kolkata.

Bangladesh, Oman win in WT20 qualifiers

March 10, 2016 by Nasheman

Bangladesh Oman

Dharamsala: Oman stunned Ireland by two wickets while the Netherlands scared Bangladesh but fell short by eight runs in World T20 qualifying matches at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium here on Wednesday.

Bangladesh rode on Tamim Iqbala¿s 58-ball 83 to make 153 for seven in 20 overs and restricted the Dutch to 145/7, pulling off a eight-run win.

In the other match, Ireland made 154/5, thanks to William Porterfield (29), Paul Stirling (29) and Gary Wilson (38). Right-arm medium pacer Munis Ansari picked up three wickets for Oman.

While chasing, Oman got off to a very strong start with a 69-run opening wicket stand between Zeeshan Maqsood (38) and Khawar Ali (34).

But Ireland hit back with regular strikes and Oman’s middle order failed, thanks to Kevin O’Brien (2-25), Andy McBrine (2-15) and Max Sorensen (2-29).

However, Aamer Ali’s quickfire knock of 32 from just 17 balls not only lifted Oman’s spirits but also saw them home, with two wickets and two deliveries to spare.

Earlier in the day during the first match, pacers Timm van der Gugten (3-21) and Paul van Meekeren (2-17) spelt disaster early for Bangladesh after the Netherlands won the toss and decided to bowl. But Bangladesh, the 2016 Asia Cup finalists, were rescued by an unbeaten innings from Tamim Iqbal, who scored 83 runs from 58 deliveries.

Left-hander Tamim put Bangladesh in a strong position with three sixes and six fours that helped his side put up a competitive total of

In reply, Stephan Myburgh (29), Ben Cooper (20) and Peter Borren (29) drove the European outfit towards upsetting Bangladesh. They were 100 for three till 15 overs, requiring 54 runs from five overs.

But left-arm spinner Shakib Al-Hasan removed Borren in the next over and Bangladesh were back in the game. Captain Mashrafe Mortaza bowled the next over and his medium pace bowling took the wicket of fresh batsman Rovert van der Merwe to damage the Dutch’s chances.

Bangladesh received a further boost as pacer Taskin Ahmed conceded only six runs in the 18th over, leaving the Dutch to score 33 off 12 balls.

Al-Amin Hossain almost sealed the match for the rising Asian team by getting rid of Cooper in the first ball of the 19th over. However, the Netherlands put up a valiant fight by taking 16 runs from the remaining five deliveries of the over.

And in the final over, right-arm seamer Taskin was up to the task, giving away only eight runs as against 17 required, handing a eight-run victory to Bangladesh.

Al-Amin and Shakib picked up two wickets apiece for Bangladesh, while Nasir Hossain bagged one.

March 9, 2016 by Nasheman

afghanistan-cricket

Nagpur: Afghanistan defeated Scotland by 14 runs in the second match of the opening day of the World T20 against Scotland at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium here on Tuesday.

Chasing a considerable target of 171 runs, Scotland only managed 156/5.

Scotland started strongly posting an 84-run first wicket stand between George Munsey (41) and Kyle Coetzer (40). But both the openers departed in the space of three balls that scuttled their ambitions.

Middle order batsman Matt Machan (36) tried to keep Scotland in the hunt but without any support from the other end, his effort went in vain.

Rashid Khan (2/28) was Afghanistan’s best bowler.

Earlier, a fine half century from Mohammad Shahzad (61) guided Afghanistan to a competitive 170/5.

Shahzad gave his side a perfect start after they won the toss, smashing five fours and three sixes in an entertaining innings in their Group B match. He finished with 61 from 39 balls, a crucial contribution in setting Scotland and imposing target of 171.

Captain Asghar Stanikzai offered good support with 55 not out from 50 balls. But he was contained in the late overs by some tight bowling from Alasdair Evans (1-24).

India overpower Bangladesh to win Asia Cup

March 7, 2016 by Nasheman

Bangladesh Asia Cup

Mirpur: Delhi lads Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli led the charge as India won the Asia Cup, outclassing Bangladesh by eight wickets in the final at the Sher-e-Bangladesh National Stadium here on Sunday evening.

Coming together after India had got off to a poor start, Dhawan and Kohli produced a 94-run partnership as the visitors overhauled the 121-run target in 13.5 overs.

Dhawan, who has been a flop throughout the tournament, finally found his touch when it mattered most, scoring 60 runs off 44 balls with nine boundaries and a six.

Kohli remained unbeaten on 41 runs off 28 balls with five boundaries. India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni added the finishing touch with 20 runs off just six deliveries, with one hit to the ropes and two sixes.

Pacer Al-Amin Hossain (1/30) gave Bangladesh some early hope by dismissing Rohit Sharma early. Chasing a tricky target in front of a packed stadium rooting for the hosts, Rohit probably found the pressure too much to handle as he edged one that was moving slightly away to Soumya Sarkar at first slip.

But that was one of the few moments of joy that the Bangladesh players and the capacity home crowd could find as Kohli and Dhawan came together to pull the visitors out of trouble.

The Delhi duo kept the required run rate within manageable limits with regular hits to the fence and some excellent running between the wickets.

It needed a superb effort in the field by Sarkar off Taskin Ahmed’s (1/14)bowling to see the back of Dhawan. The Delhi batsman attempted a square drive off a full toss, but Sarkar dived to his right to pluck the ball inches off the ground.

But by then, India were well on the road to victory and Dhoni strode in to finish off the job with some trademark power-packed hits.

Earlier, Mohammad Mahmudullah produced some lower order fireworks as Bangladesh posted 125/5 in 15 overs.

Walking in with Bangladesh in trouble at 75/5, the right-hander proceeded to hit two boundaries and an equal number of sixes in his 13-ball innings to remain unbeaten on 33.

Sabbir Rahman gave him crucial support from the other end with 32 runs from 29 balls. The duo produced a 45-run partnership to help the hosts to a competitive total.

Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah (1/13) and Ashish Nehra (1/33) made good use of the seam friendly conditions to remove the Bangladesh openers early on.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who opened the Indian bowling, had figures of 1/14 while left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (1/25) also bagged a wicket.

Bangladesh had a decent start with 11 runs in the first two overs before Bumrah pegged back the run rate with just three runs in the third over.

The Bangladesh openers tried to push up the run rate with Sarkar smashing two boundaries in the next over. But Nehra struck back immediately as he mistimed the last ball of the over while playing across the line to offer an easy catch to Hardik Pandya at mid-off.

Bumrah then piled on the pressure by trapping Tamim Iqbal leg before.

With both openers gone, Shakib al Hasan and Rahman set about trying to rebuild the innings.

They were cautious in the initial stages before trying to break the shackles with some big hits. The duo added 34 runs between them before Shakib was caught by Bumrah at short fine leg while trying to sweep Ashwin.

Bangladesh suffered back to back jolts in the 12th over when Mushfiqur Rahim was found short of his crease while attempting a second run, while Mashrafe Mortaza holed out to deep midwicket in the very next ball as Bangladesh reeled at 75/5.

Mahmudullah then provided the crucial big hits later on to help the hosts to a strong finish.

India beat Sri Lanka to enter Asia Cup final

March 2, 2016 by Nasheman

Virat-srilanka

Mirpur: India rode on fine knocks by Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh to defeat Sri Lanka by five wickets in their Asia Cup Twenty20 cricket match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium here on Tuesday and enter the finals.

Coming in after the early fall of opener Shikhar Dhawan, Kohli anchored the innings with an unbeaten half-century as India overhauled the 139-run target with four balls to spare.

The Delhi lad remained not out on 56, with seven well-timed boundaries studding his 85-ball knock.

Yuvraj produced a power-packed innings, hitting 35 runs off 18 balls with three boundaries and an equal number of sixes.

India, who have won all the three matches they have played so far, thus assured themselves a spot in the final.

The men in blue are at the top of the five-team table with six points and even an unlikely defeat in the final group game against minniows United Arab Emirates will see them through to the summit clash.

Nuwan Kulasekara was the most successful among the Sri Lankan bowlers with figures of 2/21.

The Indian run chase was off to a rocky start with openers Dhawan and Rohit Sharma departing early.

But Kohli and Suresh Raina came together to bring the innings back on track. While Kohli was the more aggresive of the two, Raina gave him good support from the other end.

The duo batted patiently, finding the gaps for the occasional boundary to add 54 runs between them.

Raina, who scored 25 runs off 26 balls with two hits to the ropes, was dismissed by Dasun Shanaka when he miscued an attempted big hit. The left-hander was surprised by the extra bounce and offered an easy high catch for Kulasekara at mid-off.

Yuvraj strode in and proceeded to plunder the Lankan bowling with some powerful hits. The veteran left-hander carried India within sniffing distance of the target before a bouncer from Perera carried the top edge to Kulasekara at fine leg.

Hardik Pandya followed Yuvraj back to the pavilion in the next over, but by then India were well on the way to victory.

Fittingly, Kohli hit the winning runs with a boundary off left-arm spinner Rangana Herath.

Earlier, Sri Lanka produced a competitive total of 138/9 in their 20 overs.

For India, promising all-rounder Pandya (2/26), off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (2/26) and young pacer Jasprit Bumrah (2/27) took two wickets each.

Veteran pacer Ashish Nehra (1/22), who bowled an excellent opening spell, also got a wicket.

Chamara Kapugedera (30) was the highest scorer among the Sri Lankan batsmen.

Asked to bat first on a greenish pitch, the Sri Lankan batsmen never really managed to settle down and lost wickets at regular intervals.

Sri Lanka suffered an early setback when opener Dinesh Chandimal was caught behind off Nehra’s bowling while attempting a big hit.

Bumrah piled on the pressure in the next over with a superb delivery which Shehan Jayasuriya edged to Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the stumps.

Dhoni’s decision to bring Pandya into the attack in place of Nehra brought immediate results as the all-rounder got rid of the dangerous Tillakaratne Dilshan with his very first ball.

Angelo Mathews seemed to be in good touch, hitting Pandya for a couple of boundaries. But the right-hander was undone by poor timimg when he got a thick inside edge onto the stumps.

Kapugedera and Milinda Siriwardana (22) tried to steady the innings with a 43-run partnership.

The duo handled the Indian bowling quite well, producing the occassional boundary as the Sri Lankans tried to come back into the game.

But the partnership came to an end when Siriwardana holed out Raina at long-on while trying to hit Ashwin out of the ground.

The Sri Lankans plunged into further trouble when Dasun Shanaka was run out off the last ball of the same over.

Thisara Perera (17) and Kulasekara (13 not out) then came up with a few bit hits in the closing stages of the innings to take their team to a competitive total.

India face Pakistan in crucial Asia Cup tie

February 27, 2016 by Nasheman

india-vs-pakistan

Dhaka: Sub-continental giants India and Pakistan meet in a crunch match in the Asia Cup Twenty20 tournament in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka on Saturday, renewing their bitter rivalry in cricket after a year.

Showdowns between the neighbours, who last played in the 50-over World Cup in Australia-New Zealand in February 2015, usually draw hundreds of millions of television viewers, making the contests the biggest box office attraction in the sport.

But diplomatic tensions have meant that the two teams have not played any series for more than three years and their rivalry is restricted to multi-national tournaments.

Pakistan, furious that India has rebuffed repeated pleas to play a series at a neutral venue, will be desperate to cause an upset against their giant neighbour.

But ahead of the match, Pakistan’s captain Shahid Afridi sounded diplomatic, saying the game could be an opportunity to improve relations between the two nations, which have fought three wars since their independence some seven decades ago.

“Sport can always develop good relationships between countries,” Afridi told reporters at Fatullah, outside Dhaka, on Friday.

“I think Pakistani people want to see the Indians in Pakistan while Indians would also like to see the Pakistanis playing over there.

“We should not give sports a political colour. We should consider the public demand and we always try to give this message.”

Afridi’s Pakistan will start as underdogs having lost five of their six previous Twenty20 internationals to India.

India favourites against Pakistan in Asia Cup, says Wasim

India came into the tournament on a string of good performances after defeating Australia and Sri Lanka in back-to-back series.

They carried their success into the Asia Cup opening match against hosts Bangladesh this week, registering a crushing 45-run win to give themselves the perfect boost before the Pakistan match.

Indian opener Rohit Sharma, who played a match-winning knock of 83 from 55 balls against Bangladesh, still chose to be cautious.

“Pakistan have a formidable bowling attack, no doubt,” he said.

“But we would want to concentrate more on our strengths and prepare our plans accordingly. Our strength is batting and depending on the wicket we will have to focus on that,” he said.

The Asia Cup, a biennial 12-day tournament, is being held in Twenty20 format for the first time in view of next month’s World Twenty20 in India.
