In reply, South Africa could only manage to score 264/9 despite a defiant century from AB de Villiers who scored 112 off 107 deliveries.

With this win, India levelled the five-match series 2-2.

Indore: A fighting unbeaten 92 by captain M.S. Dhoni helped India post a respectable 247/9 in 50 overs against South Africa in the second ODI here on Wednesday.

The under-fire Dhoni smashed seven boundaries and four sixes during his 86-ball knock. Dhoni, who walked into bat with India, struggling at 82/3, added 41 runs for the seventh wicket with Bhuvneshwar Kumar (14). He continued the good work in the company of Harbhajan Singh (22) and took India past the 200-run mark.

Earlier, the hosts were off to a poor start with in-from opener Rohit Sharma being castled by Kagiso Rabada for three. Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane put the Indian innings back on track with a 56-run stand for the second wicket. Dhawan was dismissed by Morne Morkel for 23.

Virat Kohli was involved in a mix-up with Rahane and was run out for 12, with the total reading 82. Rahane, who made a fine 51 was bowled round the legs by leg-spinner Imran Tahir as the home side slipped to 102/4 in the 23rd over. Suresh Raina failed to open his account as he was caught behind off Morkel.

Dale Steyn claimed 3/49 for the South Africans.

South Africa beats India by 7 wickets in 1st T20 game

October 3, 2015 by Nasheman

Dharamsala: South African cricket captain Faf du Plessis won the toss in the first of the three-match Twenty20 international series in Dharamsala on Friday and chose to bowl first, keeping the possibility of dew at the high-altitude venue in mind.

Indian limited overs skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said he wanted to bowl first too, and praised debutant Karnataka medium-pacer Sreenath Aravind’s IPL performance, backing the debutant. India have left out legspinner Amit Mishra, offspinner Harbhajan Singh, allrounder Stuart Binny and batsman Ajinkya Rahane.

South Africa have left out allrounder Albie Morkel, legspinner Edie Leie and batsman Khaya Zondo. Quinton de Kock isn’t playing either, so Amla will open with AB de Villiers, who will also keep wickets.

Aided by the return of Dhoni as the limited overs skipper, India will aim for a winning start against South Africa, who begin their 72-day long tour of India at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium (HPCA) on the back of a T20 loss against India A in their only warm-up match.

However, they will aim to put that poor performance behind them and look for a positive start to the hectic tour. The three-match T20 series is mostly seen as a preparation for the upcoming World Cup T20 in 2016 scheduled to be played in India.

Dhoni will be back into the side after a gap of three months and will aim to make the most of the preparations ahead of the next year’s tournament. Youngsters Axar Patel, Sreenath Aravind and Ambati Rayudu will be tested.

With India’s batting line-up comprising Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Ajinkya Rahane being the strength, the Proteas’ bowlers need to be disciplined to dismantle them in conditions favouring the batsmen.

South Afica’s batsmen, such as the likes of Plessis, de Villiers, J.P. Duminy, de Kock, David Miller will aim to use their Indian Premier League (IPL) experience as much as possible in the three T20 matches. Leg-spinner Imran Tahir will come into play on the turning tracks and can turn out to be the visiting team’s best bet at taking wickets.

India, on the other hand, have a strong bowling line-up, with spin trio of Harbhajan Singh, Amit Mishra, Ravichandran Ashwin leading the lines, assisted by pacers Mohit Sharma and Sreenath Aravind.

With both teams looking strong on paper, one cracker of a contest can be expected.

New Zealand bowl, South Africa hand debut to Wiese

David Wiese was handed an ODI debut as South Africa looked for another solution to their all-rounder conundrum as they were put in to bat by New Zealand in the first ODI in Centurion. But that won’t be the biggest problem on the hosts’ hands: their bowling plans were leaked when a document meant for Dale Steyn was sent to another guest at the hotel South Africa are staying in. AB de Villiers shrugged it off and said the bowlers “enjoy being under pressure,” so don’t see it as too much of a bad thing.

The attack is vastly changed from the T20s, with Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander and Imran Tahir all returning. Kyle Abbott was confined to the bench, as he was during the World Cup semi-final, when these two teams last met.

Both sides wear a different look from that day, with South Africa missing Faf du Plessis through injury and JP Duminy and Morne Morkel, who are both on paternity leave. Rilee Rossouw will bat up the order with Farhaan Behardien, the extra batsman, in the middle.

New Zealand do not have Brendon McCullum or Ross Taylor or their two leading seamers Tim Southee and Trent Boult. They have stuck with the same crop who played in the T20s. Adam Milne and Mitchell McClenaghan were tasked as the frontline seamers with New Zealand opting for two spinners on a pitch that is expected to slow down as the game goes on.

South Africa: 1 Morne van Wyk (wk), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Rilee Rossouw, 4 AB de Villiers (capt) 5 David Miller, 6 Farhaan Behardien, 7 David Wiese, 8 Vernon Philander, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Dale Steyn 11 Imran Tahir

New Zealand: 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Tom Latham, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Colin Munro, 5 Grant Elliott, 6 James Neesham, 7 Luke Ronchi (wk), 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Adam Milne, 10 Mitchell McClenaghan, 11 Ish Sodhi

South Africa stay top as Steyn reaches landmark

Fast-bowler Dale Steyn became the second South African to take 400 Test wickets as his efforts ensured Bangladesh were kept in check on the opening day of the second Test.

Steyn (3-30) and part-time offspinner JP Duminy (3-27) led the charge, sharing six wickets, as the hosts reached 246-8 at stumps.

Bangladesh made decent progress despite Steyn reaching the 400-wicket milestone, dismissing opener Tamim Iqbal early to leave Bangladesh 12-1. But the Proteas turned the match by claiming five wickets for 92 runs in the last session.

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim was the highest scorer with 65. Mominul Haque scored 40 while Shakib al Hasan and Mahmudullah contributed 35 each.

Fresh from a rain-hit drawn first Test which was largely dominated by the hosts, Bangladesh was unfazed by the early dismissal of Tamim, their most successful batsman at the moment.

Imrul Kayes and Mominul Haque shared 69-run partnership to back the side until Duminy halted the progress with a double strike, dismissing the pair in consecutive two overs.

Mominul was undone by the extra bounce as he attempted a late-cut while Kayes misjudged the length to be hit in front.

Mominul hit six fours in his 87 balls while Kayes sent the ball three times across the boundary rope.

Rahim and Mahmudullah combined for 94 runs to frustrate the South African bowlers. But the last session proved to be decisive for the visitors, whose fast bowlers found the reverse swing in the dry surface to unsettle the Bangladeshi batsmen.

Scorecard:

Bangladesh 246-8  (Rahim 65, Duminy 3-27)

Anti-immigrant violence spreads in South Africa

Arrests have been made in South Africa as anti-immigrant violence spreads to parts of Johannesburg’s commercial heart.

In Gauteng province, of which Johannesburg is the capital city, police arrested 18 people after overnight street battles, Major-General Phumzo Gela, deputy police commissioner, said on Friday afternoon.

Earlier police fired rubber-coated steel bullets into a crowd of South Africans in Johannesburg’s Jeppestown area.

A crowd of South Africans carrying hammers and axes gathered near the city centre, chanting “Foreigners must leave.”

Groups of South Africans in Jeppestown and Cleveland blocked roads with rocks and burning tyres and then ordered foreigners to leave the country, police said.

Jeppestown and Cleveland are neighbourhoods adjoining the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD).

A number of shops in the CBD were reported to have been looted and vandalised, further escalating tensions between foreigners and South Africans in Johanneburg.

Police said the suspects were trying to break into shops owned by foreigners.

Colonel Dlamini, police spokesperson, told Al Jazeera calm had been restored, but refused to reveal whether police had received credible reports of further threats of violence against foreigners in the city.

Violence targeting immigrants started earlier in April in the port city of Durban, claiming the lives of six people so far.

Rumours circulating

Rumours of imminent attacks on foreigners have continued to affect foreign nationals in Johannesburg.

Ahmed Fifa, a 35-year-old shop owner in the Ramaphosa settlement east of Johannesburg, said foreign nationals were warned by locals to vacate the area on Thursday night.

“One of the community leaders came to us and told us to move all our stuff and save our lives,” he said.

According to Fifa, the South Africans in Ramaphosa are divided between those who seek to protect foreigners and those intent on violently driving foreigners out.

“I can’t go back until the situation remains stable,” Fifa said. “I have seen the pictures of what happened in Durban and I need to save my life.

“The only problem we have here is the xenophobia.”

In Durban, where six people have been killed in the last two weeks of violence against immigrants, police spokesperson Jay Naicker a fragile calm had been maintained on Friday.

“Overnight we had no reported incidents and it has been calm,” Naicker said, adding that the police had not received reports of further threats against immigrants in coastal city.

He said foreigners would still not be re-integrated into the affected communities.

“The area is still tense and the police and security deployment will remain for a while,” Naicker said.

Amir Sheikh, chairperson of the Somali Community Board based in Johannesburg, said the violence in Durban has inflamed tensions between South Africans and foreigners.

“Some of our members have been harassed in Johannesburg following the violence in Durban,” he said.

Late on Thursday a widely disseminated text message claimed that “a train of Zulus” had departed for Johannesburg.

“These men are armed and they are going to be killing any foreigner they meet tomorrow,” the text message said.

The source of these messages remains unclear, but their proliferation has sowed panic and confusion among migrant communities.

“Our members have been unable to go about their day-to-day businesses because each time they open their businesses, a new message is received saying members of a certain ethnic group are gathering to attack them,” Sheikh said.

While these rumours have so far, proven to be false, its effects have already been felt.

Foreign owned stores around Johannesburg have been closed for at least two days already.

“The unfounded rumours have caused more damage to our members than anything else,” Sheikh said.

On Thursday South African President Jacob Zuma and leaders of the opposition in parliament spoke out against the violence against foreign nationals.

Zuma said that the majority of South Africans were not xenophobic.

“We reiterate our view that South Africans are generally not xenophobic,” he said.

“If they were, we would not have such a high number of foreign nationals who have been successfully integrated into communities all over our country, in towns, cities and villages.”
