India beat Australia in thriller to enter World T20 semis

March 28, 2016 by Nasheman

Virat Kohli

Mohali: Virat Kohli led the way with a sublime half-century as India defeated Australia by six wickets at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium here on Sunday to enter the World Twenty20 semi-finals.

The in-form Delhi lad remained unbeaten on 82 runs off 51 balls as the Indians survived a few early setbacks to overhaul a difficult target of 161 with five deliveries to spare.

Sunday’s match, the last in Group 2, was a virtual quarter-final as the winners qualified the semi-finals. India finished their group engagements with three wins in four matches. Australia will go home with two wins and an equal number of defeats.

New Zealand had earlier qualified for the semi-finals from Group 2, while England and West Indies have gone through to the last-four stage from Group 1.

Shane Watson put in a superb all-round effort for Australia, finishing with figures of 2/23 in his four overs. Nathan Coulter-Nile (1/33) and James Faulkner (1/35) bagged a wicket each.

The Indians were off to a shaky start with openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma going back to the dugout without too many runs on the board. Watson snared Suresh Raina with a well-directed short-pitched delivery in the eighth over to leave the hosts in trouble at 49/3.

Kohli and Yuvraj Singh tried to script an Indian comeback, adding 45 runs between them in 38 balls. Yuvraj picked up a niggle in his left leg while attempting to glance a Coulter-Nile delivery to fine leg.

The experienced left-hander was clearly in some discomfort as he was hobbling while running between the wickets. But he battled bravely to post 21 runs off 18 balls with one boundary and a powerfully six off Adam Zampa.

But just as it seemed that Kohli and Yuvraj could take India to a safe position, the latter was undone by an excellent piece of fielding from Watson when he mistimed a slower one from Faulkner.

Yuvraj’s dismissal seemed to prod Kohli into action as he unleashed the big shots. The 27-year-old right-hander hit the hapless Faulkner for two boundaries and a six off successive balls in the 18th over to bring the target within India’s reach.

He then smashed four consecutive boundaries off Coulter-Nile in the next over to virtually wrap up the issue. With four runs needed in the final over, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni dispatched Faulkner’s low full toss to the long-on fence to complete a thrilling win for India.

Earlier, Australia posted a competitive total of 160/6 in their 20 overs.

Opener Aaron Finch was the highest scorer for Australia with 43 runs off 34 deliveries, hitting three boundaries and a couple sixes during his innings. Glenn Maxwell contributed 31 off 28 balls.

For India, all-rounder Hardik Pandya (2/36) copped some initial punishment before bagging a couple of crucial wickets while Yuvraj Singh (1/19), Ashish Nehra (1/20), Ravichandran Ashwin (1/31) and Jasprit Bumrah (1/32) also bagged a wicket each.

The Indians did not help their cause by conceeding as many as 14 extras.

Electing to bat first, Australia were off to an explosive start with openers Usman Khawaja and Aaron Finch producing a 54-run partnership in just 26 balls. Bumrah copped a lot of punishment in his first over with Khawaja hitting him for four boundaries.

But Nehra gave India the breakthrough when Khawaja went after an outgoing delivery only to see the ball nick the top edge on the way to Dhoni behind the stumps.

The dangerous David Warner perished when he came down the track to Ashwin. The left-hander could not connect as the ball spun away from him and Dhoni pulled off an easy stumping.

Australia captain Steven Smith lasted for just six balls before Yuvraj had him caught behind with his very first ball. That saw the Australian run rate fall slightly with Finch and Maxwell struggled on a pitch which was offering a fair bit of turn.

Finch was deprived of what would have been a well-deserved half-century when he perished while trying to prop up the run rate. He tried to pull a slightly short-pitched delivery from Pandya into the stands, but did not connect properly as the ball looped up for a fairly simple catch to Shikhar Dhawan at deep midwicket.

Maxwell was looking set for a big score. But he virtually gifted away his wicket to Bumrah when he went for a cross-batted heave only to be out-foxed by a slower delivery.

Peter Nevill and Watson hit a couple of fours and a six off Pandya in the last over to give Australia a strong finish.

BCCI announces India’s T20 squad for Sri Lanka series, Kohli rested

February 1, 2016 by Nasheman

virat-kohli

New Delhi: Vice captain Virat Kohli was today rested for the upcoming Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka as selectors included all-rounder Pawan Negi for the three-match rubber, beginning February 9.

Kohli was in supreme form in the just-concluded Australia T20 series, where he scored 199 runs at an average of 199 with three half-centuries.

Kohli has played 10 One-dayers and five T20s apart from four Test matches from the month of October to end of January.

Roookie all-rounder Negi, who has played under MS Dhoni for the Chennai Super Kings in IPL, and had a reasonably successful Mushytaq Ali and Deodhar trophy, has been brought as a cover for Ravindra Jadeja.

Manish Pandey has also been rewarded for his match-winning century in the Sydney ODI against Australia as the selectors named him in the 15-member T20 squad.

The selection panel chose to drop Rishi Dhawan, Gurkeerat Mann and Umesh Yadav from the squad. All three had not struggled during the Australia tour, failing to put up any notable performance.

Making a comeback was paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who had missed the T20 series after injuring himself during the ODIs.

The selectors also named the squads for the women’s limited over series against Sri Lanka, to be led by Mithali Raj.

The series will begin in Pune (February 9) and followed by matches in Ranchi (February 12) and Visakhapatnam (February 14).

The eves had scripted history by defeating three-time world champions Australia in a T20 series, which was held simultaneously with the men’s series.

The women’s ODI series is scheduled to be played in Ranchi from February 15 to 19 while the three-match T20 series will be held from February 22-26.

Squads:

T20I Team (Men): MS Dhoni (Captain), Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Manish Pandey, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Ashish Nehra, Harbhajan Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Pawan Negi.

Kohli named BCCI Cricketer of the Year

December 31, 2015 by Nasheman

Virat Kohli

New Delhi: Continuing his meteoric rise, Indian Test captain Virat Kohli was today named ‘Cricketer of the Year’, while Mithali Raj was picked for the top women’s award in the BCCI annual honours to be given away on January 5 in Mumbai.

The 27-year-old batsman, who took over as captain in the middle of the tour of Australia after Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s sudden retirement, delivered some good results under his leadership.

Under Kohli, the Indian team ended a 22-year wait for a series win on Sri Lankan soil before battering world No.1 South Africa to give them their first overseas loss in nine years.

The right-hander has done well with the bat too, scoring 640 runs in 15 Test innings that he played at an average of 42.67. In his 20 ODI outings this year, Kohli managed 623 runs at an average of 36.65.

Mithali, on the other hand, became the first Indian woman and second overall to complete 5,000 runs in ODI format this year. Mithali will be presented with the M A Chidambaram Trophy for the best women’s cricketer.

In other awards, former wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani will be presented the Col. CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award.

Karnataka State Cricket Association has been chosen the state association of the year for achieving the treble of winning the Ranji Trophy, Irani Cup and Vijay Hazare Trophy in the season.

Karnataka all-rounder Robin Uthappa has been picked for the Madhavrao Scindia Award for being the highest run-scorer in Ranji Trophy. Uthappa scored 912 runs in 11 matches, averaging 50.66.

The top wicket-taker’s award is being shared this year by Karnataka’s R Vinay Kumar and Mumbai’s Shardul Thakur, both of whom scalped 48 in the previous season.

Coming in at the fall of Rohit Sharma, Kohli was part of a couple of crucial 100-plus partnerships with Ajinkya Rahane and Suresh Raina to help the hosts amass a total of 299/8 in 50 overs.

In reply, South Africa could only manage to score 264/9 despite a defiant century from AB de Villiers who scored 112 off 107 deliveries.

With this win, India levelled the five-match series 2-2.

Galle: India reached 23/1 in pursuit of 176 runs after they bowled out Sri Lanka for 367 runs in their second innings despite Dinesh Chandimal’s unbeaten 162 on the third day of the first Test at the Galle International Stadium here on Friday.

After conceding a 192-run first innings lead, the Sri Lankan top order failed to rise to the occasion. But young Chandimal registered his fourth century in Test cricket to bail the team out of trouble. Chandimal hit 19 fours and four sixes from 169 deliveries.

The right-hander forged a 125-run stand with Lahiru Thirimanne (44) when the hosts were 92/5 and it helped them overcome the innings deficit. Chandimal was also involved with another healthy partnership of 82 runs with Jehan Mubarak (49) for the sixth wicket to ensure that the Sri Lankans get a 100-run lead.

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (4-114) completed a 10-wicket haul in the match and he was ably supported by leg-spinner Amit Mishra (3-61). Veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma and Varun Aaron bagged a wicket each.

At the end of the day, India lost Lokesh Rahul (5) to Rangana Herath. Shikhar Dhawan (not out 13) and nightwatchman Ishant (5 not out) were at the crease as India look in command to get another 153 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Earlier, starting the day at five for two, Sri Lanka lost Dhammika Prasad (3) to the first ball of the day as the nightwatchman failed to fend off a well directed bouncer from pacer Aaron and edged to Ajinkya Rahane at gully.

Skipper Angelo Mathews (39) joined former captain Kumar Sangakkara (40), who is playing in his penultimate international match. The left-right combination showed some resilience even though the Indian bowlers kept troubling them.

They forged a 87-run stand for the fourth wicket to bring the deficit down to 100 runs. However, left-hander Sangakkara nudged an Ashwin delivery that took a sharp turn away from him only to see a diving Rahane pouch a brilliant catch at slip in the 25th over.

Sangakkara, considered one of the greatest batsmen, walked back to a standing ovation from the Galle crowd.

In the very next over, Mathews fell to a bouncing ball from leg-spinner Mishra. Mathews played the ball on to his pads and it went to Lokesh Rahul at silly point.

With the skipper’s wicket, Sri Lanka reeled at 95/5 when young batsmen Chandimal and Thirimanne joined hands.

Starting the second session at 108 for five and his team still trailing by 84 runs, unbeaten Chandimal felt that attack was the best mode of defence and showed his intentions early.

Ashwin picked his third wicket of the innings as left-hander Thirimanne edged one to Rahane at slip. It was Tamil Nadu’s Ashwin’s ninth wicket of the five-day match.

Chandimal was joined by Mubarak and they were going strong till Harbhajan induced an edge off the latter that was caught at slip by Rahane to reduce the hosts to 302/7.

Mishra removed Herath as the batsman edged it to slip fielder Rahane, who created a world record by taking eight catches in a single Test match.

Ishant accounted for Tharindu Kaushal (7) while Ashwin rattled the stumps of 11th man Nuwan Pradeep (3) as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 367, leaving India 176 runs to win the match.

Virat Kohli-captained India reached 23/1 with only the loss of Rahul, who was trapped in front of the stumps by left-arm spinner Herath.

Dhawan, Kohli centuries put India on top

August 13, 2015 by Nasheman

Virat Kohli

Galle: India skipper Virat Kohli struck an impressive century while opener Shikhar Dhawan scored 134 to help India extend their first innings lead to 121 runs at tea on Day 2 of the first Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Cricket Stadium here on Thursday.

Kohli (103) and Dhawan both looked settled for even bigger knocks but both fell in the second session, thus ending their 227-run third-wicket partnership.

Wriddhiman Saha (23 not out) and Harbhajan Singh (0 not out) remained unbeaten as India reached 304/6 in 91 overs at tea after Sri Lanka were bowled out for 183 on Day One itself, thanks to an impressive six-wicket haul by off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Resuming the second day’s play at 128/2 on a sunny morning, Indian overnight batsman Kohli and Dhawan found it difficult to score freely as Lankan pacers and spinners bowled in tandem. The visitors hit their first boundary only in the 13th over of the day.

However, as the first hour of play progressed, the batsmen slowly settled down and took a vital 44-run first innings lead when the first session ended.

Coming on to the field after lunch, India played on an aggressive note as skipper Kohli brought up his 10th Test century in style. But he was dismissed soon after his ton, going back to the pavilion with the score at 255/3.

India received a double blow when incoming batsman Ajinkya Rahane was out for a duck on his fifth delivery with India at 257/4.

Set batsman Dhawan and Ashwin (7) also fell soon after to give Sri Lanka something to cheer about before tea was called.

Virat Kohli to lead India for Sri Lanka tour

July 23, 2015 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The BCCI’s national selection committee on Thursday made just one change to the Indian Test team for the upcoming three-Test tour of Sri Lanka, giving 32-year-old leg-spinner Amit Mishra a Test cap after four years.

Mishra, whose last of his 13 Test matches was against England at The Oval in 2011, earned a recall to the squad as a replacement for Karn Sharma, who fractured a finger in his left hand before the side’s recently concluded tour of Zimbabwe.

After returning to the Test team after two years in the one-off match against Bangladesh, Harbhajan Singh will continue his comeback in the five-day format in the series beginning on August 12. Singh and Mishra will act as support cast for lead spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Despite new Test skipper Virat Kohli’s backing of pace to get the job done even on sub-continent pitches — three pacers figured in the drawn game in Fatullah — Sri Lanka has always favoured spinners. Pakistan leggie Yasir Shah’s brilliant performance in the series win over the hosts would only have convinced chief selector Sandeep Patil and company.

Patil emphasised that fitness and form rather than age — Mishra is 32 and Harbhajan 35 — would influence the thinking of his panel. “The policy which the selectors have adopted in the last three years is to go by fitness and form…Karn has still not recovered from the injury. It is the same with Mohammed Shami,” Patil told a media conference. Shami has not played since he underwent knee surgery following the World Cup.

“Mishra was always in the scheme of things,” he said. The leg-spinner though has been playing ODIs, playing his last game in October. However, his Test career never took off, and the 43 wickets in 13 games at an average of 43.30 show he has not grabbed the few chances that came his way.

Kohli and Ravi Shastri will continue as captain and team director, respectively. Young Karnataka opener KL Rahul, who missed the Bangladesh Test because of dengue, is back as expected, especially after scoring a fine 96 in the first India A ‘Test’ against Australia A in Chennai on Wednesday.

Patil insisted that the squad — seven batsmen, a lone wicketkeeper, four pacers and three spinners — was chosen keeping the Sri Lanka conditions in mind. “Our job is to give the right combination,” was his comment when asked about Kohli’s focus on pace over spin.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has not been included in the team. On the possible inclusion of former opener Gautam Gambhir, Patil told a news conference, “No, he was not discussed.”

While Kohli has insisted on sheer pace doing the damage, MS Dhoni was unsparing about Umesh Yadav’s poor spell following the last ODI in Bangladesh, where India lost the series 1-2. Dhoni’s insistence on line and length rather than speed and waywardness seem to be sending some message. Patil said the senior leader had every right to air his opinion in public while acknowledging that change of guard will bring a different outlook. “Dhoni is entitled to his views,” Patil said.

The selection committee could not escape questions about the recent verdict of the Justice Lodha committee suspending IPL franchises Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings and the subsequent formation of a BCCI working group to study the ruling.

“Teams are not terminated, just suspended. We have formed a committee to look into it,” said BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur.

Kohli, Rahul steady ship, India trail by 230 runs

Sydney: Centuries from Lokesh Rahul (110) and Virat Kohli (batting 140) held the Indian innings together, ending the third day’s play at 342 for five, still trailing Australia by 230 runs in the fourth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) here Thursday.

Resuming at 71 for one, India put on 271 runs in 90 overs on the third day but a couple of wickets in the last session put them in a sticky situation.

Kohli and company will need to grind it out in the first couple of hours Friday if they are to get close to Australia’s mammoth first innings total of 572 for seven declared.

Some tight bowling in the morning helped Australia restrict India to score only 51 runs in 30 overs in the first session of play. The visitors started cautiously but made sure they did not lose wickets.

Rohit Sharma (53) scored some runs as he reached his first half-century of the series. However, immediately after reaching fifty he attempted a sweep off the bowling of spinner Nathan Lyon, only to misjudge the ball and be castled.

However, thereon Kohli and Rahul struck a vital 141-run third wicket partnership which steadied the ship for India. Coming out post-lunch at 122 for two, the second session entirely belonged to India as the visitors scored 112 runs in 30 overs without losing a single wicket.

Rahul, 22, scored his maiden century in only his second Test after a disastrous debut in Melbourne where he had scores of 1 and 3.

However, he rose from that failure and played a patient yet composed innings to reach his century in 253 balls. His knock was highlighted by 12 boundaries and one splendid six over deep mid-wicket.

The Bangalore boy heaved a sigh of relief after reaching his century and became a little loose with his shots. This had an immediate impact as he top edged a bouncer soon after tea only to be caught and bowled by Mitchell Starc (2/77).

In the meantime, Kohli solidified his innings to score his fourth century of the series and 10th of his career. His innings of 140 not out, laden with 20 boundaries, also broke the record for most runs by an Indian in a series Down Under, going past the ever-reliable Rahul Dravid’s 619 runs scored in 2003-04 series.

In the process, the Delhi lad also became the first ever player to score three tons in the first three innings as a skipper.

Just when it looked like India could end the day in a strong position, all-rounder Shane Watson (2/42) clinched Ajinkya Rahane (13) and Suresh Raina (0) on successive deliveries.

Playing a Test match after almost two and a half years, Raina failed to make an impact as he followed a slow and swinging delivery only to edge it and get caught behind.

India ended the day with wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha (batting 14) striking an unbeaten 50-run stand with Virat Kohli.

The most successful bowler of the series with 20 wickets, Lyon (1/91) looked lethal with the old ball on a turning track but had to be content with the lone scalp of Rohit Sharma.

Australian bowlers tried their best to take more wickets but they were, uncharacteristically, not supported by their fielding.

Rahul was lucky on two occasions. Australia had a brilliant chance of running him out just after Rohit’s dismissal which they totally messed up.

Rahul had another escape when he was dropped by Australia skipper Steven Smith, who ran back from slip to catch a top edged pull. The ball eventually burst through his hands into the ground.

Later, Smith also dropped Kohli just before tea at second slip.

December 13, 2014 by Nasheman

Adelaide: India suffered a dramatic batting collapse, losing eight wickets in the final session and were bowled out for 315 runs, to lose the first Test against Australia by 48 runs on the fifth and final day at the Adelaide Oval here Saturday.

Skipper Virat Kohli (141) scored his second century of the match, again leading the visitors’ batting charge. He was given able support by opener Murali Vijay (99). But their good work wasn’t complemented by the rest of the team as they succumbed to the guile of off-spinner Nathan Lyon who took seven wickets for 152 runs.

Australia had earlier declared their second innings at 290 for five.

Australia 7 for 517 dec (Smith 162*, Warner 145, Clarke 128) and 5 for 290 dec (Warner 102) beat India 444 (Kohli 115, Lyon 5-134) and 315 (Kohli 141, Vijay 99, Lyon 7-152) by 48 runs
