3 Wipro employees arrested for hacking UK firm TalkTalk

January 29, 2016 by Nasheman

wipro

London: Three employees of a call centre run by Wipro for UK telecom firm TalkTalk have been arrested over security breach allegations, according to British media.

The Kolkata-based workers were arrested earlier this month following a data security review by the London-based firm, which then alerted Indian police.

The arrests came months after TalkTalk was hit by a high-profile hacking in October last year when personal details of its customers were compromised.
But the company has indicated that the latest arrests in India are not related to last year’s data breach.

“Following the October 2015 cyber-attack, we have been conducting a forensic review to ensure that all aspects of our security are as robust as possible including that of our suppliers. Acting on information supplied by TalkTalk, the local police have arrested three individuals who have breached our policies and the terms of our contract with Wipro. We are also reviewing our relationship with Wipro,” TalkTalk said in a statement.
“We are determined to identify and deal effectively with these issues and we will continue to devote significant resource to keeping our customers’ data safe,” the phone and broadband service provider added.

News of the arrests was first reported on Britain’s ‘Channel 4 News’ last evening.

It reported that Indian police had made the arrests over the last fortnight in relation to allegations of theft of customers’ data and using it to con them out of thousands of pounds.

“Wipro is committed to maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of all customer data and has a zero tolerance policy on security breaches,” Wipro said in a statement.
“Wipro is working closely with the customer in the investigation and will continue to extend its full cooperation to the investigating authorities. We are unable to comment on the matter that is currently under investigation,” it added.

London: An Indian woman employee at the London office of IT major Wipro has filed a 1 million pounds compensation case of sexual discrimination, unequal pay and unfair dismissal against the firm.

She alleged she was subjected to a “deeply predatory, misogynistic culture” and forced into an affair with a married boss at the Bangalore-headquartered firm’s UK division.

The 39-year-old told an employment tribunal in London this week how her boss called her “a seductive dancer from Indian mythology”.

“Women who are confident, capable and express their viewpoints are often called ’emotional’, ‘psychotic’ or ‘menopausal’. Women who supported women are called ‘lesbians’,” she said.

She claimed she was manipulated into an affair with a married senior vice-president. On one business trip to Stockholm in 2013, the 54-year-old allegedly told her the silk blouse she was wearing was “too tight” for her body type.

The India-born woman said she embarked on the affair despite finding his conversation “inane” and that he suffered on occasion from a “certain body odour”, the ‘Daily Telegraph’ reported.

The former sales and market development manager, who handled outsourcing business deals for Wipro, said she was treated like “dirty goods” after ending the affair and lodging complaints about her treatment.

She also claimed she was paid far less than male staff, earning up to 75,000 pounds per annum rather than the typical 150,000 pounds paid to male equivalents.

However, Wipro refused to comment on the lawsuit. “Wipro does not comment on its ongoing lawsuits and Wipro is committed to the principle of equal employment opportunity and provides all our employees with a work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment of any kind. Wipro is defending these allegations before the court,” a statement by Wipro Ltd said.

“Following an impartial inquiry, both were relieved from the services of the company after it was established beyond reasonable doubt that they had violated the stated policy,” the statement said.

“Wipro takes serious objection to the scurrilous allegations made against the company and will initiate legal action to defend itself against insidious and defamatory allegations,” it said.

“The company has built its business over the years by ensuring it adheres to the highest standards of integrity, fairness, and ethical corporate practices. Any transgression of these beliefs and policies are dealt with expeditiously and with the strictest action,” the statement said.

Wipro launches ‘Wipro earthian’: A one of its kind Sustainability Education Program

August 27, 2015 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Wipro Limited, a leading global information technology, consulting and business process services company, announced the launch of the fifth edition of ‘Wipro earthian’, a nationwide sustainability education program for schools and colleges.

This program provides an interconnected understanding of different disciplines in education related to ecological and social sustainability. It aims at long term education and learning that will help educators, students and educational institutions make more informed choices about their lives and society.

Over the last five years, Wipro reached out to more than 100,000 students from over 50,000 institutions across the country for this program. The program has consistently elicited encouraging responses from institutions and students as evidenced by the thousands of project submissions over the years. Each year, 10 schools and 10 colleges are shortlisted for the awards.

In the 2014 edition, Wipro reached out to around 10,000 students and received close to 600 submissions. The winning institutions were welcomed into the Wipro earthian community and awarded a trophy and cash prizes.

Wipro’s earthian provides a broad platform for interaction, followed by a more intense and continuing engagement program (CEP) for the winning teams. The program includes activities aimed at building skills, appreciating new attitudes and values to help shape a sustainable future. Wipro’s objective with CEP is to engage with these teams over a long period of time and help integrate sustainability education in a holistic way.

Some of the leading institutes in the country like Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D), National Institute of Technology, Trichy (NIT-Trichy), Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB), Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK), Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai (ICT Mumbai) have been regularly participating in this program. “The first part of solving a problem is to identify that there is a problem. What I really like about earthian is that it is trying to recognise that there is a problem,” said Sushant Bangru, student from IISc, Bangalore, one of the winning teams of Wipro earthian 2014.

Anurag Behar, Chief Sustainability Officer, Wipro Limited said, “This is a special year for Wipro earthian as we reflect on our five year journey. It has been an enriching experience where all of us, institutions, faculty and students have learnt together. Our vision and hope is to make Wipro earthian a unique platform that fosters understanding of how sustainability in education can be a powerful influence on our thoughts and actions.”

As an extension to the main Wipro earthian 2015 program, the company also introduced a new program, ‘Wipro earthian Foundations’ to introduce students in the age group of 9-13 years to the culture of sustainability. As part of this program, these students were invited to write and share stories about their experiences with nature. The two best stories in English and Hindi will be published with a foreword by noted author Ruskin Bond and actor Aamir Khan, respectively.

Azim Premji gives half of his stake in Wipro for charity

July 9, 2015 by Nasheman

Azim Premji

Bengaluru: Economic value is sustainable only if created on a foundation of ethics and responsibility, say the IT czar

IT czar Azim Premji has given away almost half of his stake holding in Wipro, India’s third largest exporter of software services, to philanthropy.

The Wipro’s billionaire founder has given away an additional 18 per cent of his stake in the IT Company for charity, thus earmarking 39 per cent of stake (worth Rs 53,284 crore) for a charitable trust.

The latest philanthrophic initiative by Premji would pump in an additional Rs 530 crore by way of dividends into the Azim Premji Trust’s corpus this year.

69-year old Premji is the first Indian to sign the Giving Pledge, sponsored by billionaires Warren Buffett and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates to invite the world’s wealthiest to donate majority of their wealth to charity.

“Over the past fifteen years, I have tried to put this belief into action through my personal philanthropic work…,” Mr. Premji said in a letter to shareholders published in the company’s annual report for the year ended March 2015.

Mr. Premji said, “Over these years I have irrevocably transferred a significant part of the shareholding in Wipro, amounting to 39 per cent of the shares of Wipro, to a Trust (of which ownership in 21.14 per cent was transferred and for the balance the Trust is entitled to beneficial interest of dividends and sale proceeds).”

The previously transferred 21 per cent stake was estimated at USD 4.3 billion. The promoter group led by Mr. Premji holds 73.39 per cent stake in Wipro.

Mr. Premji was considered the ‘most generous Indian’ of 2014 according to the Hurun India Philanthropy List.

He said the Trust supports the work of The Azim Premji Foundation and Azim Premji Philanthropic Initiative and thus a very significant part of the value created by Wipro, goes towards social causes.

Mr. Premji also stated in the report that economic value is sustainable only if created on a foundation of ethics and responsibility.

“For us, this is the driving force in the form of our values and is something that we will continue to remain completely committed to,” he added.

The company’s Social and Sustainability Initiatives are driven by the conviction that corporations should play a significant role in contributing to building a better society, Mr. Premji said.

“The owners — individuals or other entities — of such corporations can do a lot more for society, because they can choose to exercise the right of their ownership, and invest their wealth in any social cause, to their utmost,” he said.

Accept India as pluralistic nation, says Azim Premji at RSS event

April 6, 2015 by Nasheman

azim-premji

New Delhi: Wipro Chairman and philanthropist Azim Premji on Sunday addressed a convention of nearly 800 RSS-backed organisations and gave a call for accepting India as a great pluralistic nation.

“The test of our social commitment and humanity is how we treat the most powerless of our fellow citizens, the respect we accord to our fellow human beings. That is what reveals our true culture. As a great pluralistic nation, we must accept our differences. It is vital we accept them and find a common ground to work together. Negative people only focus on differences,” he said.

Addressing the event in the presence of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Premji said some had been apprehensive about his participation in the function. “They felt I would be seen as endorsing the ideology of the Sangh by addressing a forum like this. I did not follow their advice because, firstly, I am not a political person. I am, however, deeply interested in and concerned about my country. So I see no issue in speaking at an occasion where people have gathered to discuss how to contribute to the country,” he said.

“Also, I believe that merely speaking at a particular forum does not in any way mean one endorses all, or any, of the views that might be expressed at the forum, or held by the organisers,” he added.

He said it was an “honour” to have been invited by the RSS chief to speak at the Rashtriya Sewa Sangam, amongst people who were not only dreaming of a “better India” but actually dedicating their lives to it.

“While I may not know many of you here, some of my colleagues do know some of you, and, more importantly, are acquainted with the good work being done by many present here for the genuine betterment of our country, and I did not want to miss this opportunity of speaking with you,” he said.

“And most importantly, having met Bhagwat, I realised how many people like you all over India are dedicating your lives to the genuine uplift of our country. And I thought, all those working towards a better India should attempt to join hands where they can,” he added.
