Ranji Trophy: Mumbai score 370/2 on opening day against Gujarat

Mumbai: Mumbai rode on unbeaten centuries from Akhil Herwadkar and Suryakumar Yadav to pile up 370 for 2 on day one of their Group B Ranji Trophy game against Gujarat at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Gujarat’s hopes of securing at least the first innings lead to enhance their hopes of advancing to the quarters took a beating as the hosts, surprisingly asked to bat first by visiting team captain Parthiv Patel, scored at more than four an over to grab the advantage.

Left-handed opener Herwadkar remained unconquered at the end of the day with a patient knock of 143 off 257 balls, inclusive of 16 fours and a six.

He was lucky to be let off twice by wicket keeper and rival captain Patel before he reached 40s.

Yadav, at the other end, stroked his way to 103 not out off 159 balls – studded with 3 sixes and 9 fours.

The third wicket duo, who joined forces at the fall of one-down batsman Shreyas Iyer (75 off 69 balls with 10 fours and a six), had added 196 runs before stumps.

Earlier, put in to bat the home team – already assured of a berth in the last eight – raced to 74 before losing opener Jay Bista, edging left arm R P Singh to ‘keeper Patel, for a breezy knock of 44 that included six hits to the fence.

The ever-aggressive Iyer and Herwadkar then came together to stitch a partnership of 100 runs before the former lost patience and his wicket. In trying to glide Rush Kalaria over the wicket keeper’s head he managed only an edge to Parthiv.

To make things worse, the Gujarat captain let off Herwadkar when on 12, a difficult leg-side catch, and a regulation stumping when the left hander (39) rushed out to the first ball from left- arm spinner Axar Patel and got beaten.

Taking full advantage of these reprieves, Herwadkar reached his half century in 101 balls. He was more aggressive later and reached his second ton of the season in 196 balls.

Yadav, after the fall of Iyer, stroked his way to his half century before tea in 69 balls and then slowed down a bit to complete his hundred in 148 balls.

Rayudu helps Baroda reach 242/5 on Day 1

Ambati Rayudu (70) and Aditya Waghmode (56) cracked twin half-centuries as Baroda reached 242 for 5 in their first innings against Uttar Pradesh on the opening day of a Group B Ranji Trophy match.

Rayudu’s 184-ball unbeaten innings was studded with seven boundaries and a six, while Waghmode hit six fours and a six during his 113 ball stay at the Greater Noida Sports Complex G round here.

At the draw of stumps, Rayudu was at the crease and giving him company was Irfan Pathan (18).

BalaJanaagrah Project by students of Oasis International School

Bengaluru: The students of Oasis International School chose to work towards the improvement of Thanisandra Main Road as a part of their Bala Janaagraha Project on – Or Roads, the Tender Sure Way.This road is divided by a median which separates the road into two different wards.One part of the road comes under ward number 6; coperatorMrs.

Mamtha Venkatesh, MLA Krishnabyregowda and Byatarayanapura Constituency. The other part comes under ward number 24; corporator. Mr.P Anand and MLA as Mr. K J George, Sarvagnanagar Constituency.

The problems faced by the residents of this area are:

  • Traffic congestion especially after 5:00 in evening create alot of air pollution and sometimes causes accidents.
  • Footpaths are not properly built; they are too narrow, irregular, uneven and broken all along the road. Many shops have encroached on the footpath.
    There is no parking facility anywhere along this road.
  • Along the part of the road which the students surveyed, two streetlights were broken and two not in working conditions. A major part is lit by hoardings and light from the apartments.
  • The drains overflow due to heavy rains.
  • There is alot of garbage found nearly everywhere.
  • There are no public washrooms, park, etc.
  • The median is not straight at places and has not a single plant.

Actions taken by the students were as follows:

  • The students spoke to the corporators of both the wards who said that they would ensure that the garbage is pick-up regularly and the potholes are filled.
  • The students spoke to the security manager of 4 Star Hotel Howard Johnson who offered to place dustbins and saplings along this road in future when the road is done.
  • They lodged complaints in many websites such as www.ichangemycity., People’s Problems, Deccan Herald, wrote to “Saytrees” who would provide saplings to plant.
  • A cleanliness drive was organized in the presence of the health officer of ward 6 and civil engineer of BBMP.
  • An invited was emailed to Dettol India for their contribution in the cleanliness drive.
  • The students sent water sample to BS Analytical Testing Laboratory to check if the water was safe for drinking. The report said that the water was chemical and physical safe for drinking.
  • They hung pollution catchers by greasing two paper plates to check the dust collecting on them due to traffic movement.
  • A traffic and pedestrian count to verify the amount of traffic flow and people using the footpath was conducted.

Solutions:

  • Immediate results were that intense cleaning took place, manhole and some storm water drains were covered and a few potholes were filled soon after.
  • The students organized a free medical camp at Saraipalya at Umar Farooq Masjid with the help of Islamic Information Centre. There were about 300 people who got their eyes, dental and general check up. Free medicines and toothpastes were distributed. Many people had their blood sugar test done and 13 free cataract surgery were registered.
  • Many people in the locality were made aware of their situation and informed to contact helpline number to lodge complaint regarding civic issues. A tract was allotted as auto stand which eased the people shopping/travelling in this area.

This project by BalaJanaagraha organisation has got not only the students actively involved the local issues but also their parents and neighbours.; and inturn, made the officials alert and reminded them of their duties. This could be a drop in the ocean, never-the-less, it has made a difference in the lives of all these janaagrahis!

Heavy rain disrupts normal life again in Tamil Nadu & Puducherry

Chennai: Heavy rainfall inundated parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, and Puducherry on Tuesday, severely affecting daily life. The weather office also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and neighbouring Puducherry on Wednesday, reported PTI.

A holiday has been declared on Tuesday for educational institutions in these districts as well as in Puducherry. In Chennai, the rain resulted in water-logging in several areas, while flight operations were also hit due to the inclement weather conditions.

Chennai Collector E Sundaravalli said there was a possibility of increasing discharge of excess water from Chembarambakkam lake, a key reservoir which provides drinking water to the city, into Adyar river. With the discharge likely to go up, the collector asked residents living along the banks of Adyar river to move to safer areas.

‘Huge error’: Former US military chief admits Iraq invasion spawned ISIS

The 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq fueled the creation of the Islamic State (ISIS) today and must serve as a warning against similar rash military intervention in Syria, a former U.S. intelligence chief said in an interview with German media on Sunday.

“When 9/11 occurred, all the emotions took over, and our response was, ‘Where did those bastards come from? Let’s go kill them. Let’s go get them.’ Instead of asking why they attacked us, we asked where they came from,” former U.S. special forces chief Mike Flynn, who also served as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), told Der Spiegel. “Then we strategically marched in the wrong direction.”

In recent weeks, ISIS has claimed responsibility for attacks in Lebanon andParis and the bombing of a Russian airplane over the Sinai peninsula, which together killed hundreds of people. Following the attacks, French President François Hollande vowed a “merciless” response against the group in Syria and Iraq—a statement that prompted comparisons between Hollande and former U.S. President George W. Bush in the wake of 9/11.

Echoing long-held arguments made by other experts, Flynn said Sunday that increased airstrikes and other offensives could be seen as an attempt to “invade or even own Syria,” and that the fight against militant groups like ISIS will only succeed or make progress through collaborative efforts with both Western and Arab nations. “Our message must be that we want to help and that we will leave once the problems have been solved. The Arab nations must be on our side.”

Otherwise, the U.S. is poised to repeat all its past mistakes, he said.

Der Spiegel‘s Matthias Gebauer and Holger Stark noted that in February 2004, the U.S. military “already had [ISIS leader] Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in your hands—he was imprisoned in a military camp, but got cleared later as harmless by a U.S. military commission. How could that fatal mistake happen?”

Flynn replied:

We were too dumb. We didn’t understand who we had there at that moment.

[….] First we went to Afghanistan, where al-Qaida was based. Then we went into Iraq. Instead of asking ourselves why the phenomenon of terror occurred, we were looking for locations. This is a major lesson we must learn in order not to make the same mistakes again.

Asked whether he regretted the Iraq War, Flynn responded simply, “Yes, absolutely.”

“It was a huge error,” Flynn said. “As brutal as Saddam Hussein was, it was a mistake to just eliminate him. The same is true for Moammar Gadhafi and for Libya, which is now a failed state. The historic lesson is that it was a strategic failure to go into Iraq. History will not be and should not be kind with that decision.”

Flynn’s interview with Der Spiegel echoes comments he made to Al Jazeera‘s Mehdi Hasan in August that the U.S. “totally blew it” in preventing the caliphate’s rise “in the very beginning.”

In fact, Flynn said, the U.S. deliberately backed extremist groups within the Syrian rebel movement as far back as 2012, when he was still DIA head. The Obama administration was aware at the time of a recently-declassified DIA memo that predicted the rise of a militant group in eastern Syria. Supporting the insurgency was a “willful decision,” he said.

Erdogan challenges Putin to prove ISIL oil claim

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s president, has said he would be ready to quit office if allegations by his Russian counterpart that Turkey traded oil with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group were proved.

Erdogan’s comments on Monday came after Vladimir Putin accused Turkey of shooting down the Russian Su-24 warplane last week to protect supplies of oil from ISIL to Turkey.

Turkey has already rejected the accusation.

“I will say something very strong here,” Erdogan was quoted as saying by the state-run Anadolu news agency on the sidelines of the UN climate talks near Paris, which Putin is also attending.

“If such a thing is proven, the nobility of our nation would require that I would not stay in office.”

Challenging Putin, who has refused to meet Erdogan after the November 24 incident in Yamadi, in Syria’s Latakia province, Erdogan said: “And I tell Mr Putin: Would you stay in that office? I say this clearly.”

In the interview, Erdogan said: “Let’s remain patient and let’s not act emotionally.”

He maintained that Turkey obtained all its oil and gas imports “through the legal path”.

“We are not dishonest so as to do this kind of exchange with terrorist groups,” he said.

“Everyone needs to know this.”

After the Su-24  was downed by Turkish F-16 fighter jets for alleged violation of Turkish airspace, Putin accused the Turks of being “accomplices of terrorists” and said oil from ISIL territory was being exported through Turkey.

Malicious onslaught launched by govt, says Chidambaram after raid on son’s firms

New Delhi: Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday accused the government of a “malicious onslaught” launched by it against his family and said if it wants to target him it should do so directly and not harass friends of his son Karti.

“If the government wishes to target me, they should do so directly, not harass friends of my son who carry on their own businesses and have nothing to do with politics,” he said in a statement shortly after reports of Income Tax and Enforcement Directorate searches on some premises connected with Karti’s friends.

“My family and I are quite prepared to face the malicious onslaught launched by the government,” Chidambaram said.

The senior Congress leader said he was travelling and he had been informed about searches conducted on certain firms in Chennai allegedly linked to his son. “We have made it clear, repeatedly, that no member of my family has any equity or economic interest in any of the firms that are being targetted.

“They are companies that are professionally managed and are capable of answering any questions that may be put to them by the authorities. I condemn the attempt to link them to my son and harass them on that ground,” he said.

Chidambaram alleged that the agenda of the government was being implemented by an officer of the Enforcement Directorate who has a pending dispute with the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance.

“Orders in his case were apparently passed during the term of my predecessor. He met me and wanted me to intervene in his favour. I declined and I told him that I cannot reverse orders that were issued during the term of my predecessor.

“The change of government has given him an opportunity to misuse his powers to harass my son and his friends,” he said.

Will step in if Centre obstructs Delhi Janlokpal Bill: Anna Hazare

Ralegan Siddhi: Social activist Anna Hazare today said he will step in if the NDA government at the Centre puts obstructions in the way of Janlokpal Bill, introduced in Delhi Assembly by the AAP government.

The anti-corruption crusader was talking to reporters after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Kumar Vishwas and Sanjay Singh met him at his native Ralegan Siddhi village in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district to brief him on the salient features of the Janlokpal Bill, tabled in Delhi Assembly by the Arvind Kejriwal government yesterday.

Hazare said that during his discussions with the AAP leaders, he expressed apprehension that the Centre may pose obstructions as the legislation provides for probing corruption in Delhi, where the central government offices are located.

“If that is the case then I assured them of my full support. I told them I am with them,” Hazare said when asked if he would launch an agitation on the issue.

He said the central government lacks the will to fight corruption and there should be no “parochial attitude” on the issue of dealing with graft.

Hazare and some top activists of his team had in 2012 parted ways with the Kejriwal-led group, opposing their plans to form a political party, after a roller-coaster ride of 18 months in which they came together to run a high-steam anti-graft movement. One of its prominent poll promises, the AAP emphasised that the Bill is similar to its original 2011 version.

It will empower the proposed ombudsman to act against any public servant in the national capital, including those of the Centre.

While the draft bill of 2015 states that no prosecution or legal proceedings can be initiated against the Janlokpal or any staff member of the Janlokpal office, AAP leaders said the process of impeachment will be applied for removal of any member of the Lokpal.

The Bill has to be cleared by the Lieutenant Governor before it becomes a law.

Mining baron Janardhana Reddy gets bail

Bengaluru: Mining baron and former BJP minister G Janardhan Reddy was granted bail by the Lokayukta Special Court on Monday in connection with an illegal mining case.

Justice V.G. Bopaiah accepted the bail plea on the condition that Reddy would give two sureties and a bond for Rs. 5 lakh.

The court last week sent Reddy to judicial custody till December 3, when he was produced before it by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Reddy was arrested on November 20 under the Provisions of Indian Penal Code, Prevention of Corruption Act of 1988 and the Mines and Minerals (Development & Regulation) Act of 1957.

A CBI team in 2011 had arrested the former Karnataka minister and mining baron Gali Janardhana Reddy in Bellary, on charges of illegal mining operations in the Reddys’ Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) in Andhra Pradesh. He had secured anticipatory bail in 13 cases.

After spending three years and four months in Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Prison, Reddy was granted conditional bail by the Supreme Court in January 2015.

Petrol cheaper by 58 paise, diesel 25 paise

New Delhi: The price of petrol was today cut by 58 paise per litre and that of diesel by 25 paise, reversing the trend of increasing rates, on global cues.

Petrol will cost Rs 60.48 per litre from mid-night tonight in Delhi as against Rs 60.70 a litre currently.

A litre of diesel will cost Rs 46.55 from tomorrow compared with the Rs 46.80 now, said Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), the nation’s biggest fuel retailer.

The price cut more than reverses the hike of 36 paise a litre in petrol rates effected on November 16, the first increase in five months. Similarly, in the case of diesel, it reverses the three rounds of hikes since October — the last being 87 paise a litre on November 16.

“The current level of international product prices of petrol and diesel and rupee-dollar exchange rate warrants a decrease in prices, the impact of which is being passed on to consumers with this price revision,” IOC said in a statement here.

Prior to the November 16 hike, petrol price had been slashed on four occasions — by Rs 2.43 on August 1, Rs 1.27 on August 16, Rs 2 on September 1 and 50 paise on November 1.

Diesel rates were not changed on November 1, but hiked by 95 paise on October 16 and 50 paise on October 1. Rates of diesel were last cut by 50 paise on September 1.

State-owned fuel retailers — IOC, Bharat Petroleum Corp (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corp (HPCL) — revise petrol and diesel prices on 1st and 16th of every month based on average imported cost and rupee-dollar exchange rate in the previous fortnight.

“The movement of prices in the international oil market and INR-USD exchange rate shall continue to be monitored closely and developing trends of the market will be reflected in future price changes,” the IOC statement added.

BJP MPs asked to avoid making provocative statements

New Delhi: BJP MPs were today asked to avoid making provocative statements amid the debate in Parliament over the issue of intolerance where controversial comments by some party leaders, including ministers, have come in handy for the opposition in its attack on the government.

In the first parliamentary party meeting during the Winter session, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu told the members that provocative statements are being used by the anti-BJP forces to deflect the attention from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development agenda.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said members were also briefed about the recent elections, including one in Bihar where BJP suffered a big defeat, and the need to work to spread the party ideology was stressed.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said in the meeting that the economic growth of 7.4 per cent in the last quarter was a positive sign for the country and will help the government take development to the poor.

“MPs were told to speak with understanding and decorum. There is a need to avoid controversy… At a time when the Prime Minister is pushing ahead with his development agenda, many people are unable to digest it and any misstep will allow anti-BJP forces to work it to their benefit. We should avoid making provocative statements,” Naqvi said, quoting Naidu.

He said the debate on the issue of intolerance was “unmasking” those who were misleading the country and added that the party MPs were told that communal riots were controlled under the BJP-led NDA government and there was social harmony everywhere.

The “constructive discussion” between Modi and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was also flagged in the meeting. We have all hopes that developmental issues will be discussed and passed, Naqvi said, apparently referring to the GST bill.

Naqvi said the parliamentary party, which includes MPs of both the Houses, expressed happiness over BJP’s success in local elections in a number of states.

Asked about Bihar results, he said the party had tried hard. “We respect the people’s mandate. But no mandate is final.”

Speaking on the briefing in the meeting over intolerance debate, he said sarcastically that those protesting over the issue include many “great intellectuals” who had issued an appeal to the people to vote against Modi during the Lok Sabha poll.

People rejected their appeal but they have not able to get over it, he said.

Jaitley told the members that the economic growth at a good rate in India was a happy development at a time when it was weakening across the world.
