“I have tried to convey a subtle message in an entertaining way in my debut directorial film Than Than Gopal”: Khartik Shetty

November 3, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Karthik Shetty

Khartik Shetty happens to be an actor of Kannada films. And of late he has come up with his debut directorial film Than Than Gopal albeit not in Kannada but in Marathi. Sounds surprising but having been born and brought up in Mumbai he found the directorial going quite smooth enough.

To set the ball rolling can you give us a little insight into your background?

Basically speaking I am a Kannada actor albeit born and brought up in Mumbai. Till this date I have ended up doing a hat trick of Kannada films namely Yuvah, Khartik & Agnimusti. And my fourth film Akshata is due for release by the end of Nov, 2015.

Khartik Shetty

And now how come you are making your directorial debut with a Marathi film and not a Kannada film?

Actually speaking me and my friends had come across this very sweet, simple & fascinating story which had a flavor of a Maharastrian milieu about it. So it was not at all possible to make the film in Kannada hence we all decided to make it in Marathi and not in Kannada and we named this film as Than Than Gopal.

So what is Than Than Gopal all about?

Than Than Gopal is all about a 11 year old blind boy, for whom being blind is not a disadvantage. In fact he lives his life full of Joy de vivre spirit. On the other hand is his friend who is a Warli painter. Warli is an ancient art of painting, which, of late, happens to be a dying art form.

Are you trying to impart any social message through your movie Than Than Gopal?

No doubt the film hits you at first when you see the plight of the blind boy and the Warli painters. But we are not out to seek the audiences sympathy for them. In fact I have tried to convey a very subtle & serious message in a very entertaining way. We have also tried to take a very strong stand against both the issues. And for this I would like to thank my producers Siddhanth Mahesh Shetty & Nidhi Prakash Shetty for backing this project all the way from its conception to its final release.

Did you face any problem while directing a Marathi film?

No not at all. You see being brought up in Mumbai I am well versed with the Marathi language. But of course since I cannot speak the Marathi language fluently I refrain myself from speaking the language in front of the media. And I am ok while making a general conversation in my day to day life.

As a parting shot tell us if you are planning to pitch Than Than Gopal in the film festival circuits?

Right now it is not on my mind as I am up to my neck in the film’s release. But of course I think it’s not a bad idea at all. So I will definitely try to pitch Than Than Gopal in the festival circuits too.

Sania and Martina, the top seeds, prevailed 6-0, 6-3 over their eight-seeded rivals in a lopsided summit clash, which lasted little over an hour.

Before this, Sania and Martina had won eight titles (Indian Wells, Miami, Charleston, Wimbledon, US Open, Guangzhou, Wuhan and Beijing) and finished runner-up just once (Rome – falling to WTA Rising Stars Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic).

The Indo-Swiss pairing dropped serve only once through the match and broke their opponents five times to wrap up a comprehensive victory.

Sania and Martina are now unbeaten in 22 matches, stretching back six tournaments. In fact, since their last defeat — to Chan Hao-Ching and Chan Yung-Jan in Cincinnati — they have dropped just two sets.

Muguruza and Suarez Navarro — late replacements in the draw after Casey Dellacqua and Yaroslava Shvedova’s withdrawal — were completely outplayed in the match.

“I feel like it was a perfect day. Sania just played out of her mind – she was everywhere today, getting everything back and playing incredible tennis,” Hingis said.

This triumph is especially huge for Martina as the trophy was her 50th WTA doubles title, a milestone only 15 players have reached (Martina Navratilova, Rosie Casals, Pam Shriver, Billie Jean King, Natasha Zvereva, Lisa Raymond, Jana Novotna, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, Gigi Fernandez, Helena Sukova, Larisa Neiland, Cara Black, Rennae Stubbs, Wendy Turnbull and Liezel Huber).

Sania and Martina ended the year as the world number one women’s doubles team and the Indian tennis ace said a win in the WTA Finals is the perfect way to wrap off the year. “To play in tournaments like this is what we’ve fought all our lives for and it’s incredible to play in front of a packed stadium,” said Sania.

“We feel very fortunate. We’ve done some amazing things together and it’s the perfect way to end the year for us,” she added.

Some in Mumbai Police work in tandem with Dawood: Chhota Rajan

November 3, 2015 by Nasheman

Chhota Rajan

Bali: Underworld don Chhota Rajan Tuesday alleged that “some members” in the Mumbai Police have links with wanted terrorist Dawood Ibrahim and said he will keep on fighting against him.

“Some members of the Mumbai Police are working in tandem with Dawood. I will keep on fighting against terrorism and Dawood. I am not scared of Dawood,” said Rajan, a close confidante-turned-rival of Dawood, the prime accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

Rajan, who was arrested in this popular tourist town on his arrival from Australia on October 25, is expected to be produced before a court soon where the Indonesian police will submit details of the cases for which he is wanted in India.

He is likely to be deported to India soon. “The entire process is likely to be completed in next two-three days,” an Indian official had said yesterday.

“The government can keep me anywhere – Delhi or Mumbai. But there should be no injustice done to me. All cases against me are false,” Rajan, who is wanted in over 75 heinous crimes ranging from murder, extortion to smuggling and drug trafficking, told reporters when asked whether he was afraid of returning to Mumbai.

“Mumbai police has been unjust to me. Delhi government taking note of that should do justice to me,” he said.

An Indian team has been working with its Indonesian counterparts to take over Rajan’s custody.

The Indian team, comprising officers from CBI, Mumbai and Delhi police, arrived here on Sunday and they came along with a detailed dossier on 55-year-old Rajan and his involvement in various crimes in India.

The team for the first time questioned him yesterday in the presence of Indonesian police at the detention centre where he has been lodged for the last 10 days.

New Delhi: An Uber cab driver was today sentenced to life imprisonment till his natural death for raping a woman executive in his taxi 11 months ago by a Delhi court.

The court awarded the maximum sentence for the offence which endangered the life of the 25-year-old woman.

32-year-old Shiv Kumar Yadav was given the life imprisonment by Additional Sessions Judge Kaveri Baweja who held that the convict while raping the victim abducted her with an intent to compel her for marriage.

“Convict (Yadav) is sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for life which shall mean imprisonment till his remaining natural life for the offence under section 376 (2)(m) (committing rape causes grievous bodily harm) of the IPC,” the judge said and also imposed a fine of Rs 21,000 on him.

The court also directed the Delhi Legal Services Authority to give compensation to the victim and to take care of the family of the convict.

Moments after pronouncement of the judgment, Yadav, his wife, father and two minor daughters started crying inconsolably.

His wailing wife also fainted in the courtroom.

According to the prosecution, the incident took place on the night of December 5 last year when the victim, a finance executive working in Gurgaon, was heading back to her house at Inderlok in Central Delhi.

The accused was arrested on December 7, 2014 from Mathura. The prosecution had produced 28 witnesses in the case.

Will behead Siddaramaiah if he eats beef in Shivamogga, says BJP leader

November 3, 2015 by Nasheman

SN Channabasappa

Shivamogga: A local BJP leader has dared Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to eat beef at Gopi Circle here but gave an ominous warning: if he did so, he would be beheaded.

“Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is behaving like a dictator. He has stated he would eat beef if he chooses to do so and nobody could stop him. Let him eat beef at Gopi Circle in Shivamogga. If he does so, he will be beheaded,” S N Channabasappa, a former president of the erstwhile Shivamogga City Municipal Council, said on Monday at a protest organised by the BJP against the chief minister’s remark on beef.

“We won’t think twice about that. By making such a statement, the Congress leader has hurt the sentiments of Hindus. We have all grown up drinking cow’s milk,” he added.

M Shankar, spokesperson for the BJP’s Shivamogga district unit, said Siddaramaiah was talking like the owner of a meat shop. “If he eats beef, then Congress workers will eat dog, fox and so on to appease him and get the posts of chairmen of boards and corporations.”

Manmohan, Sonia, Rahul Pay Tributes to Indira, Patel

October 31, 2015 by Nasheman

Sonia-Gandhi

New Delhi: Former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and party vice president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday paid tributes to former prime minister Indira Gandhi and India’s Iron Man Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

They paid tribute to Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary at the Shakti Sthal memorial site dedicated to her.

“We pay tribute to Indira Gandhi today (Saturday). A leader with courage and compassion. She protected the poor and died for India,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

Indira Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984 by her bodyguards a few months after the Indian Army took action in the Golden Temple in Amritsar to remove militants from there as part of a move to counter the insurgency in Punjab.

President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President Hamid Ansari also visited Shakti Sthal to pay floral tributes to Indira Gandhi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute and said: “Tributes to former prime minister Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary.”

She was born on November 19, 1917.

She held the office of prime minister from January 1966 to March 1977. She also became the prime minister from January 14, 1980 till her death.

The three Congress leaders also paid tribute to India’s first home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birth anniversary.

Sardar Patel, known as India’s Iron Man, played a major role in the country’s struggle for independence and subsequently guided its integration into a united, independent nation.

Patel was born on October 31, 1875 in Gujarat’s Nadiad town. He died on December 15, 1950.

In his tweet, Rahul Gandhi said: “My tribute to Sardar Patel on his birth anniversary. One of the founding fathers of our nation, a patriot and a great Congressman.”

“His contribution to unifying India and guarding against fundamentalist forces will always inspire us,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi said Sardar Patel was truly India’s Iron Man as he believed in a strong, united India where every Indian is equal.

‘Gasoline on the fire’: Obama orders ground troops To Syria

October 31, 2015 by Nasheman

Expanded military footprint will include Special Ops forces inside Syria and expanded ground operations in Iraq

"We should know by now that the first law of military conflicts is escalation," said Jon Rainwater of Peace Action. "That’s why sending these troops into battle should trouble all Americans. With the 'no boots on the ground' promise broken there’s no telling how many U.S. troops will ultimately be sent to Iraq and Syria." (Photo: Kevin Lamarque/Reuters)

“We should know by now that the first law of military conflicts is escalation,” said Jon Rainwater of Peace Action. “That’s why sending these troops into battle should trouble all Americans. With the ‘no boots on the ground’ promise broken there’s no telling how many U.S. troops will ultimately be sent to Iraq and Syria.” (Photo: Kevin Lamarque/Reuters)

by Jon Queally, Common Dreams

In a move that critics says fulfills long-held warnings of “mission creep” and amount to throwing “gasoline on a fire,” the Obama administration on Friday announced that U.S. ground troops will now be deployed inside Syria.

In strategic leaks to various media outlets, the Pentagon made clear the president’s plan to send approximately 50 Special Operations soldiers inside the war-torn country. Reports also note that expanded ground operations will also be taking place in neighboring Iraq.

Unnamed U.S. officials reportedly “stressed” to Reuters that the new boots-on-the-ground in Syria were “not meant to engage in front-line combat but rather to advise and assist moderate rebels.” One official told Reuters the key role of the troops would be “logistical” and designed, the news agency reported, to “ensure that weapons and other supplies are delivered to the moderate forces whom the United States supports.”

The news was described as “predictable as it is disappointing” by the U.S. antiwar group Peace Action.

“We should know by now that the first law of military conflicts is escalation,” said Jon Rainwater, a spokesperson for the group. “That’s why sending these troops into battle should trouble all Americans.  With the ‘no boots on the ground’ promise broken there’s no telling how many U.S. troops will ultimately be sent to Iraq and Syria.”

An official announcement from the White House or the Pentagon is expected later on Friday.

According to CNN:

The deployment of U.S. Special Operations forces is the most significant escalation of the American military campaign against ISIS to date.

The U.S. Special Operations forces will first be deployed to northern Syria to help coordinate local ground forces and U.S.-led coalition efforts to fight ISIS, the senior administration official said.

The U.S. will also boost its military footprint in confronting ISIS in Syria by deploying A-10 and F-15 fighter jets to an airbase in Turkey. And the U.S. is also eying the establishment of a Special Forces task force in Iraq to boost U.S. efforts to target ISIS and its leaders. President Barack Obama has also authorized enhancing military aid to Jordan and Lebanon to help counter ISIS.

The U.S. has bombed targets in Syria since September 2014 without stopping ISIS, and it has largely failed in a mission to recruit and train moderate rebels in Syria to take on the terror group. In recent months, the U.S. has also bolstered its aid to local forces, air-dropping weapons, ammunition and other supplies to rebel forces inside Syria.

The announcement for military escalation comes as Russia, the U.S., and other regional powers, including Iran, met in Vienna, Austria to initiate a new round of diplomatic efforts aimed at ending Syria’s civil war and countering the rise of the Islamic State in both Iraq and Syria.

Writing for The Intercept, journalist Nick Turse writes that while the deployment is being “portrayed by the administration as an intensification of the current strategy and enhancing ‘efforts that are already working,'” the order is a “clear escalation of the conflict for the president who has previously said, ‘I will not put American boots on the ground in Syria.'”

Since Obama first announced the bombing campaign in Iraq and Syria in 2014, critics have warned that such tactics would likely lead to “mission creep” in the two countries. As the number of troops in Iraq has steadily grown over the last year and a half, this will be the first acknowledged presence of U.S. soldiers in Syria—a country against which the U.S. has not officially declared war.

Investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill was among the immediate critics, offering this sarcastic tweet following Friday’s announcement:

US Special Ops headed to Syria to “advise and assist.” This should end really well.

— jeremy scahill (@jeremyscahill) October 30, 2015

“Over a year into the U.S.-led bombing campaign what have we accomplished?” asked Rainwater. “The United States has spent over $4.75 billion on over 6,059 airstrikes in Iraq and Syria.  Watching the tragic refugee crisis spreading, we know that more bombing isn’t making the Syrian people any safer.  And as the United States drops thousands of bombs, angering thousands of people in two Middle Eastern nations, it’s not making the American people any safer either.  On the contrary, a U.S.-led attack in Syria, with the inevitable civilian casualties, strengthens recruitment for ISIS.  Adding U.S. ground troops is just throwing gasoline on the fire.  Instead, we need sustained diplomacy to end the Syrian civil war and we need to significantly increase humanitarian aid for the victims of the conflict.”

Meanwhile, Peter Van Buren, a retired 24-year veteran of State Department and sharp critic of U.S. foreign policy in the region, said on Friday that President Obama has much to answer for now that he has betrayed earlier and repeated vows not to expand military operations in Syria and Iraq.

“In August 2014,” writes Van Buren, Obama told the nation we needed to re-intervene in Iraq “on a humanitarian mission to save the Yazidis. No boots on the ground, a simple act of humanness that only the United States could conduct, and then leave. We believed. It was a lie.”

Now, Van Buren continues, we are “being told by that same president that Americans will again fight on the ground in Iraq, and Syria, and that Americans have and will die. He says that this is necessary to protect us, because if we do not defeat Islamic State over there, they will come here, to what we now call without shame or irony The Homeland.”

But serious questions remain, he says, and the U.S. public deserves answers and a sensible explanation. “We want to believe, Mr. President. We want to know it is not a lie. So please address us, explain why what you are doing in [Iraq and Syria]. Tell us why we should believe you — this time — because history says you lie.”

Mumbai: Actor Anupam Kher was booed by the audience as a debate at a literary festival here on freedom of speech heated up, with the actor wondering aloud if it was a paid audience.

Kher was among the panel of speakers at the debate on ‘Freedom of expression is in imminent danger’ organised as part of the Tata Literature Live Festival.

Kher along with BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli spoke for the motion whereas former BJP ideologue Sudheendra Kulkarni and noted writer Shobha De spoke against the motion.

Soon after Kher rose to speak, he was booed after he recalled Shobha De’s past as an editor of a film magazine “which printed gossip about which film star slept with whom.”

Undeterred, Kher went on saying “people have an agenda and cannot handle a chaiwala becoming a PM.”

As the booing continued, Kher said he had spoken to the festival organiser Anil Dharker in the morning and expressed his apprehensions of a paid audience at the debate.

This infuriated several members of the audience who kept on booing the actor.

His wife Kirron Kher, a BJP MP, who was in the audience rose to his defence but the audience did not stop booing Kher who said being a theatre artist he was used to such booing.

Dharker said it was ridiculous to suggest that the audience at the debate which ended at around 10 PM, was paid.

Moderator Nik Gowing former BBC anchor declared the motion carried after a show of ‘ballot pamphlets’ by audience.
