Ghostbusters is a rollercoaster

August 6, 2016 by Nasheman

By: Shaheen Raaj
Producer:

Director: Paul Feig

Star Cast: Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Erin Gilbert, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones & Neil Casey

Director Paul Feig’s latest offering Ghostbusters is a remake of the original 1984 version. But the current movie lacks the scary punch and instead ends up as absolutely unscary albeit a jovial good yet more of a rollercoaster comic oriented laugh riot. But will a reboot featuring an all new starcast with cameos by original film’s actors work remains to be seen.

The scripted scenario of Ghostbusters kick – starts following the story of Dr. Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) who dreams of acquiring tenure status at the Columbia University. However, her dreams of tenure come under threat when she learns that her one time friend & co -author Dr. Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) released a book on paranormal that they wrote, without her permission. Fearing that the book which deals with the paranormal will affect her tenure application, Erin sets out to confront Yates and makes her withdraw the book. But when Abby & Erin come face to face, a series of confusing events and an abrupt introduction of Dr. Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon), lead Erin on a ghost hunting expedition with Abby & Jillian. The expedition proves to be a success with the trio being able to find an ectoplasmic human representation of a once living being, but unfortunately the said apparition escapes their clutches. However, a video of the encounter with Erin ranting about ghosts being real makes its way to the web, which not just ends Erin’s tenure but also gets her fired. The female Ghostbusters team now also hire a dumb & blonde secretary Kevin (Chris Hemsworth) who has no idea of what his job profile is or what is that of his employers.

Director Paul Feig’s directorial treatment seems to be absolutely pedestrian with a total lack of punch which is an essential requisite for such horror & comic oriented movie. The only thing that comes to his rescue is a smoother albeit a more eye appealing CGI. All said & done Ghostbusters obviously boasts of some pretty cutting edge visual effects. The CGI of the film is good and is synced well with the 3D effect. That being said, the heavy duty CGI & VFX in the climax is impressive.

Performance wise the entire female brigade comprising of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Erin Gilbert, Kate McKinnon & Leslie Jones scores the overall brownie points. While Neil Casey the only lone ranger in this all female brigade army tries his best to hold his fort and ends up delivering an utmost convincing act.

Tail Piece: Ghostbusters is nothing more than a simple horror – comedy which makes up for a light entertainer.

By: Shaheen Raaj

Once upon a time, a few aeons ago, there was an actor named Dheeraj Kumar and one of his film was Raton Ka Raja. A film which had instantly gained him a limelighted recognition. To the extent that it made him an overnight star in his own right. There after he did a lot of films and then he once again gained stardom by working in as many as 21 superhit Punjabi Films. This phase of Dheeraj Kumar as the most sought after actor happened to span the era of the 70’s & the 80’s. And before he could be bracketed in the league of Kahan Gaye Woh Log stars, Dheeraj Kumar had bounced back as a small screen producer by floating his own concern Creative Eye Limited with his better half Zuby Kochhar. And ironically the 1st ever small screen serial they produced was named Kahan Gaye Woh Log!!! for DD National Channel. And now Creative Eye Limited’s new on – air serial is named Y. A. R. O. Dishoom has all the ingredients of a commercial potboiler

August 6, 2016 by Nasheman

By: Shaheen Raaj
Producer:

Director: Rohit Dhawan

Star Cast: John Abraham, Jacqueline Fernandez, Varun Dhawan, Akshaye Khanna, Rahul Dev & Saaqib Salim and above all Nargis Fakhri, Parineeti Chopra and cricketers like Javed Miandad, Mohinder Amarnath & Atul Wasan in cameo roles.

Music: Abhijit Vaghani & Pritam

The varied scams of India and more specifically the match – fixing scam of the game of cricket has started attracting Bollywoodian film makers too. So in the not so long ago past we had a film like Jannat and just recently we had a film like Azhar based on the alleged match – fixing scam of cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin albeit which dealt more with his personal life’s love tangle, and now comes director Rohit Dhawan’s Dishoom based on the same game of cricket again albeit with a kidnapping angle attached to it.

The plotted scenario of Dishoom kick – starts with a well – planned kidnapping of Indian cricket team’s ace – cricketer Viraj Sharma (Saqib Salim) by the dreaded Altaf (Rahul Dev), at the behest of Wagah (Akshaye Khanna) during a cricket series in the Middle East. The reason for Wagah to kidnap Viraj Sharma is to bail himself out of the Rs. 400 crore worth of debts that he has got himself into because of his match – fixing deals going kaput. When the Indian Government gets to know that Viraj Sharma has been kidnapped and that too, just 36 hours before the crucial & the much awaited India – Pakistan match, they decide to put their best police officer Kabir Shergill (John Abraham) on the job. Fearing national unrest & tension, they instruct Kabir Shergill not to utter a word to anyone about Viraj Sharma’s kidnapping. When the news reaches the embassy of the Middle East, they immediately become ready to offer all kind of possible help to Kabir Shergill. That’s when Kabir Shergill chooses the “never – solved – any -case” police officer Junaid Ansari (Varun Dhawan), who is only way too happy to be chosen for the task of finding Viraj Sharma. And their parter in crime is Ishika (Jacqueline Fernandez) who is a petty thief.

Director Rohit Dhawan’s last outing was Desi Boyz which had really attracted attention towards his superb directorial treatment and with Dishoom he has indeed proved that he is a chip of the old block namely his father David Dhawan. Another plus point of Dishoom is the technical side comprising of screenplay by Tushar Hiranandani & Rohit Dhawan himself, action by Allan Amin & Stefan Richter, music by Abhijit Vaghani (Background Score) & Pritam (Songs – some of which have already proved to be runaway hits), cinematography by Ayananka Bose & editing by Nitin Rokade & Ritesh Soni.

Performance wise the film clearly belongs to John Abraham & Varun Dhawan and together with their superb chemistry and excellently well – matched comic timings will bring the house down and leave the audiences in spits to the extent that may even roll down in the darkened auditorium. But individually both John Abraham & Varun Dhawan are superb & outstanding respectively. In fact Varun Dhawan is improving his histrionic skills film by film and displays his emotional, comic, romantic & action abilities too. Next in line the same is the case with Jacqueline Fernandez and to top it she also adds the oomp & the glamour quotient in right proportion. That apart a seasoned actor like Akshaye Khanna makes his grand re – entry in Bollywood with Dishoom. In fact he is simply outstanding in his cameo role of a bad boy with gay/homosexual streaks omnipresent in him. On the other hand Saqib Salim as the kidnapped cricketer is perfect. And last but not in the least Rahul Dev succeeds in displaying the mean & evil streaks in in his villainous avatar.

Tail Piece: Dishoom has all the ingredients of a commercial potboiler to satisfy the cravings of a masala oriented cine goers hailing from all walks of life.

10,000 Indians stranded in Saudi to be evacuated: Swaraj

August 1, 2016 by Nasheman

New Delhi, Aug 01, 2016, PTI:

About 10,000 Indians stranded in Saudi Arabia will be evacuated and no one will go hungry as ration has been distributed to them, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said in Parliament today.

Her deputy V K Singh is leaving for Saudi Arabia to oversee the evacuation process, she said in a statement in both Houses of Parliament.

As members in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha expressed concern over the fate of these Indians, Swaraj made the statement informing them that the Indian embassy was running five camps to feed them and she had received hourly inputs till early today.
“Not one worker of ours will go hungry. This is my assurance to the country through Parliament… We will bring all of them back to India,” Swaraj said.

The government, she said, was in touch with the foreign and labour offices in Saudi Arabia to ensure their early evacuation.

Swaraj noted that the law there Does not permit an emergency exit visa without no objection certificate from the employers who, she said, have shut their factories and left the country, leaving these employees stranded.

The government has requested the Saudi government to give them exit visas as employers had left the country and also urged it to first clear the dues of workers who have not been paid for months, whenever they settle the accounts with the companies concerned.

Singh is leaving for Saudi Arabia to oversee the operation, she said.

She recieved the last report at 2.45 AM, she said and informed the Lok Sabha that ration for 10 days had been distributed in all the five camps. “I am personally monitoring the situation.”

As some opposition members in Lok Sabha raised some questions, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan disallowed them, saying “She (Swaraj) has done everything. She has done really good work. Nobody has worked this much.”

Swaraj’s response also drew praise from the Chair and members in the Rajya Sabha.
Swaraj made the statement in the Lower House amid the din created by Andhra Pradesh MPs, who were demanding special category status for the state.

Senior BJP member L K Advani, who was sitting next to Swaraj, was seen requesting Andhra members with folded hands to allow her to speak.

Novak Djokovic beats Kei Nishkori to claim Toronto Masters title

August 1, 2016 by Nasheman

Toronto: Minutes after completing a 6-3, 7-5 ATP Toronto Masters final win over Kei Nishikori for his 66th career title, Novak Djokovic had already shifted his focus to the Rio Olympics.

The world number one, who claimed his fourth Canadian title with a command performance over Asia’s top player lasting less than 90 minutes, will waste no time in heading south to Brazil for the weekend start of the Summer Games.

“It’s the biggest event in the history of the sport, so to be part of it is already a huge privilege and honour that I will cherish, as I did in Beijing and London Olympic Games,” said the holder of a leading 30 Masters 1000 trophies.

“I had an honour of carrying the flag for my country in London 2012, one of the most unique and unforgettable moments of my life. So I look forward to that, honestly, just being part of it.

“I’m approaching the Olympic Games as any other tournament. I’m trying to respect the same kind of preparation and routine that I have with my team and that I have respected for so many years.

“It has worked well for us this week and as most of the other weeks the last couple of years.”

Djokovic lifted his game in Canada as the week progressed, sweeping to the title without the loss of a set and dispatching challenges from Gael Monfils in the semis followed by Japan’s Nishikori.

“The overall sensation (of Rio) is not going to be the same as the other tournaments, because it’s Olympic Games,” he said. “Of course you represent your country.

“You get to feel that you’re part of something much larger than just the tennis event. I look forward to that.

“I’m going to try to extract that positivity out of that huge attention and energy that will be directed into the Olympic Games and hopefully put myself in a position to battle for a medal.”

Djokovic won a bronze medal in Beijing and just missed the podium in London, losing to Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro in the bronze medal match.

Sunday’s title erased memories of a third-round Wimbledon upset loss a month ago to Sam Querrey.

“Everything in life happens for a reason. The fact that I have lost in the first week of Wimbledon allowed me to have a week more of the time with my family and just the quality time off the tennis, thinking about other things, recharging my batteries, and then coming in here with plenty of motivation to do well.

“I couldn’t ask for a better start to the hard court season, and hopefully I can keep going in the right direction.”

Djokovic won his seventh trophy this season. “It has happened many times in my career where I would start a tournament still feeling a little bit uncomfortable on the court and finding my rhythm, and then in the end of the tournament I find that proper comfort level with shots, with the way I feel, with mental attitude.

“My two best performances arrived in semi-finals and finals — the right moment for me.

“That gives me a lot of confidence that I will try to carry into Rio.”
