Modi’s Ravana terrorism comment draws ire in Sri Lanka

October 14, 2016 by Nasheman

Narendra Modi

Colombo: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comment that Ravana was the new form of terrorism has drawn fire from Ravana followers in Sri Lanka.

In his Vijayadashmi address in Lucknow on October 11, Modi had linked Ravana with terrorism and said that “the first person to fight terror was neither a soldier nor a politician, but the mythological bird Jatayu who fought against Ravana to protect a helpless Sita, whom he was trying to kidnap”.

“We condemn the statement made by the Indian Prime Minister equalling King Ravana to a terrorist,” Ittapane Saddhatissa, a Buddhist monk who leads the Ravana Force, said.

He said the Ravana Force would soon hand over a petition to the Indian High Commission here, protesting against this remark.

Saddhatissa said Modi’s comment hampers the ongoing reconciliation process in Sri Lanka.

Another organisation Ravana Shakthi said Ravana had not been dubbed a terrorist in even in Ramayanaya.

Thailand’s venerated King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world’s longest-reigning monarch, has died at the age of 88, the palace has announced.

King Bhumibol passed away at Bangkok’s Siriraj hospital on Thursday. The palace did not give a reason for his death. He was 88 years old.

“His Majesty has passed away at Siriraj Hospital peacefully,” the palace said, adding he died at 15:52 (0852 GMT).

The highly revered monarch spent most of the past decade hospitalised for a variety of ailments, including kidney and lung problems.

The Royal Palace recently said the octogenarian had been in a “not stable” condition for several days after receiving dialysis treatment.

Bhumibol had been Thailand’s king since 1946 and had earned the deepest respect from the vast majority of Thais.

A constitutional monarch with no formal political role, Bhumibol was widely regarded as Thailand’s unifying figure in the nation’s fractious political scene.

Since 1932, Thailand has witnessed 19 coups, including 12 successful ones. The latest was in 2014 that installed the current military government led by former army general Prayuth Chan-ocha.

As his health deteriorated, the king’s participation in public affairs sharply declined in recent years.

Concern about succession has been entwined with Thailand’s political turmoil over the past decade. Widely viewed as the choice for the next king, Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn hasn’t garnered the same respect as his father.

Vajiralongkorn – who lives mostly in Germany – flew back to Bangkok on Wednesday.

US singer-songwriter Bob Dylan has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”.

The Swedish Academy announced its decision on Thursday, drawing to a close the 2016 Nobel season.

Dylan’s surprise win marked the first time the prestigious award was bestowed to someone primarily seen as a musician.

The songwriter, 74, had been mentioned in the Nobel speculation for years, but few experts expected the academy to extend the award to a genre such as pop music.

‘Greatest living poet’

Regarded by many as the voice of a generation for his influential music and lyrics from the 1960s onwards, Dylan is still writing songs and is often on tour.

“Dylan has the status of an icon. His influence on contemporary music is profound,” the Swedish Academy said, when it awarded the $930,000 prize.

His songs such as Blowin’ in the Wind, Masters of War, A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall, The Times They Are a-Changin, Subterranean Homesick Blues and Like a Rolling Stone captured a spirit of rebellion, dissent and independence.

“He is probably the greatest living poet,” Swedish Academy member Per Wastberg said.

Nobel ceremony

This year, the Sweden-based body, which has awarded the literature prize since 1901, registered about 220 nominees that were later cut to a short list of five.

In 2015, the academy awarded Belarusian writer Svetlana Alexievich, citing her writings on key events affecting Belarus during and after the Soviet era, including the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, the Soviet-Afghan War and the fall of the Soviet Union.

This year, the literature prize was the last of the six Nobels to be announced, following those for medicine, physics, chemistry, peaceand economics.

The six awards will be handed out on December 10, the anniversary of prize founder Alfred Nobel’s death in 1896.

Panneerselvam takes charge of Jayalalithaa’s portfolios

October 13, 2016 by Nasheman

panneerselvam

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Finance Minister O. Panneerselvam has taken charge of the portfolios earlier handled by Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, officials said on Thursday.

This was also reflected on the state government’s official website which listed the portfolio’s handled by Jayalalithaa but now put under Panneerselvam’s name. Jayalalithaa held the portfolios of Public, Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, Indian Forest Service, General Administration, District Revenue Officers, Police and Home.

Panneerselvam, who visited the state secretariat on Wednesday and Thursday, is stepping into Jayalalithaa’s shoes for the third time, but this time with a difference. In the first two instances, Jayalalithaa had stepped down as the Chief Minister due to legal troubles and Panneerselvam replaced her.

The officials said that it is just reallocation of portfolios, that is, files that were sent to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for approval earlier will now be sent to Panneerselvam. On October 11, a Raj Bhavan statement said Governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao had, under Clause (3) of the Constitution’s Article 166, allocated the subjects hitherto dealt with by Jayalalithaa to Panneerselvam on her advice. “This arrangement has been made as per the advice of Chief Minister and will continue until Jayalalithaa resumes her duties. She will continue to be the Chief Minister,” the statement said.

Jayalalithaa, 68, was admitted to a hospital here on September 22 for treatment of fever and dehydration. Doctors said she needed a longer stay at the hospital as she was suffering from infection and put her on respiratory support.

Karnataka to foster economic ties with Polish region

October 13, 2016 by Nasheman

rv-deshpande

Bengaluru: Karnataka signed an agreement to foster economic ties with Wielkopolska region in Poland, Industries Minister R.V. Deshpande has said.

“The agreement will catalyse in forging business opportunities and establishing flourishing business relations between our regions,” said Deshpande on Wednesday on the occasion at Poznan in Poland.

Recalling his meeting with Wielkopolska delegation in Mumbai last November, Deshpande said leading Polish firm Ekolog chose Bengaluru to set up a clean energy technology plant with INR 3,329.54-million investment under the ‘Make in India’ programme.

“I am informed that Poland is interested in ‘Make in India’ and has initiated ‘Go India’ which helps Polish firms to look towards us for investments,” noted Deshpande.

Lauding the progress Poland made in the post-war period, especially over the last two decades, the minister said Indo-Polish trade had been thriving, with India exporting commodities, textiles, drugs, machinery and auto parts and importing artificial resins, non-ferrous metals and machine tools from the Eastern European nation.

“Indian software majors like Wipro and TCS have their presence in Poland. India has signed high value arms deals with your country for supply of air defence missiles, armoured recovery vehicles and tank upgrades,” Deshpande told Poznan international trade fair deputy Chief Executive Tomasz Kobierski and Wielkopolska board member Leszek Wojtasiak on the occasion.

Noting that Poland was the second highest FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) contributor from the Central European nations to India, as evident from INR 41,286.33 million over 15 years from 2000-2015, the minister said India had, however, invested INR 199.77 billion in Poland during the same period.

“Several Indian firms, including Reliance, Ranbaxy, Videocon, Zensar Technologies and KPIT Cummins have invested in Poland, while Polish firms like Can-Pack Poland, Inglot, Geo Fysika have presence in our country,” asserted Deshpande.

Reiterating that huge opportunity was present in IT, solid waste management, clean technologies and renewable energy, the minister told Polish stakeholders to explore potential areas for collaborations and investments in the state.

“As Bengaluru is the world’s second largest IT cluster and leading start-up hub, Aour state has a good industrial and technology based ecosystem, which attracted global firms to set up their R&D and innovation centres in this tech hub.

Indian Ambassador to Poland Ajay Bisaria was also present on the occasion.

MP: Minor Dalit rape victim attempts self-immolation

October 13, 2016 by Nasheman

caste

Itarsi: A Dalit rape victim at a village in Madhya Pradesh’s Itarsi allegedly tried to immolate herself by pouring kerosene, fearing that an accused in the case, who came out on bail recently may kill her, police said today.

The minor girl suffered 40 per cent burn injuries in the incident yesterday and is being treated at a hospital here, they said, adding her condition is stated to be stable and out of danger now.

She took the extreme step at her residence in Nayagaon, around 15 km from here, out of the fear that the accused would harm her, Itarsi Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Anil Sharma said.

She was raped in February this year following which two accused were arrested, he said.
The main accused in the case is still lodged in jail but one of his accomplices (Anil Yadav) was released on bail nearly two months back and since then the victim is gripped with a fear that he may take revenge or might kill her, Sharma said.

It appears that in a disturbed state of mind yesterday, she poured kerosene to immolate herself and suffered 40 per cent burn injuries, he said.

Soon after the incident yesterday, Yadav was arrested and booked under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, he said.

Police and social organisations were helping the victim and her family in all possible manner, the SDOP said.

Triple talaq: Uniform Civil Code ‘not good for nation’, says Muslim Board

October 13, 2016 by Nasheman

muslim-personal-law-board

New Delhi: The Muslim Personal Law Board said on Thursday that a Law Commission questionnaire, to gauge public opinion on triple talaq and some other practices across religions, is a “fraud”, that it will boycott it and that a uniform civil code is not good for India.

The Muslim Law Board also said that the law commission isn’t acting independently and is instead acting at the behest of the Centre, which last week opposed the practice of triple talaq in the Supreme Court and said it can’t be regarded as an essential part of religion.

“A uniform civil code is not good for this nation. There’re so many cultures in this nation, (they) have to be respected. India can’t impose a single ideology,” said the Board’s Hazrat Maulana Wali Rahmani at a press briefing today.

The Commission in its questionnaire asks whether triple talaq – which according to Islamic law based on the Koran permits a husband to pronounce talaq three times to instantly divorce his wife – should be abolished altogether, retained only in customs without legal sanctity, or retained with suitable amendments.

The Muslim Law Board has consistently said that triple talaq is a ‘personal law’ and hence cannot be modified by the Centre.

“We are living in this country with an agreement held by the constitution. The constitution has made us live and practice our religion. In America everyone follows their personal laws and identity, how come our nation doesn’t want to follow their steps in this matter?” Rahmani said.

The Centre has countered the claim of the Muslim Law Board and said, “practices of triple talaq, polygamy and nikah halala cannot be regarded as essential part of religion and hence get no protection under fundamental right to religion.”

Rahmani and other Board officials today also indicated that they feel Muslims are discriminated against.

“Muslims equally participated in India’s freedom struggle, but their participation is always underestimated,” a Board official said.

The Commission, though, said its questionnaire asks for opinion on practices across religions – not just Islam – that many call anti-women, Justice BS Chauhan, chairman of the Law Commission, said earlier.

For example, while one question on the list of 16 is about triple talaq, another is asking the public what steps are needed to “ensure that Hindu women are better able to exercise their right to property, which is often bequeathed to sons under customary practices”.

Justice B S Chauhan, chairman of the Law Commission, said that formulating the questions was an elaborate affair involving several meetings of the Commission, in addition to consultations with numerous experts in the field.

“It took us two months to frame the questions keeping in mind prevailing customs and practices in different religions to elicit meaningful responses from the public,” he said.
