MP: Minor Dalit rape victim attempts self-immolation

October 13, 2016 by Nasheman

caste

Itarsi: A Dalit rape victim at a village in Madhya Pradesh’s Itarsi allegedly tried to immolate herself by pouring kerosene, fearing that an accused in the case, who came out on bail recently may kill her, police said today.

The minor girl suffered 40 per cent burn injuries in the incident yesterday and is being treated at a hospital here, they said, adding her condition is stated to be stable and out of danger now.

She took the extreme step at her residence in Nayagaon, around 15 km from here, out of the fear that the accused would harm her, Itarsi Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Anil Sharma said.

She was raped in February this year following which two accused were arrested, he said.
The main accused in the case is still lodged in jail but one of his accomplices (Anil Yadav) was released on bail nearly two months back and since then the victim is gripped with a fear that he may take revenge or might kill her, Sharma said.

It appears that in a disturbed state of mind yesterday, she poured kerosene to immolate herself and suffered 40 per cent burn injuries, he said.

Soon after the incident yesterday, Yadav was arrested and booked under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, he said.

Police and social organisations were helping the victim and her family in all possible manner, the SDOP said.

Triple talaq: Uniform Civil Code ‘not good for nation’, says Muslim Board

October 13, 2016 by Nasheman

muslim-personal-law-board

New Delhi: The Muslim Personal Law Board said on Thursday that a Law Commission questionnaire, to gauge public opinion on triple talaq and some other practices across religions, is a “fraud”, that it will boycott it and that a uniform civil code is not good for India.

The Muslim Law Board also said that the law commission isn’t acting independently and is instead acting at the behest of the Centre, which last week opposed the practice of triple talaq in the Supreme Court and said it can’t be regarded as an essential part of religion.

“A uniform civil code is not good for this nation. There’re so many cultures in this nation, (they) have to be respected. India can’t impose a single ideology,” said the Board’s Hazrat Maulana Wali Rahmani at a press briefing today.

The Commission in its questionnaire asks whether triple talaq – which according to Islamic law based on the Koran permits a husband to pronounce talaq three times to instantly divorce his wife – should be abolished altogether, retained only in customs without legal sanctity, or retained with suitable amendments.

The Muslim Law Board has consistently said that triple talaq is a ‘personal law’ and hence cannot be modified by the Centre.

“We are living in this country with an agreement held by the constitution. The constitution has made us live and practice our religion. In America everyone follows their personal laws and identity, how come our nation doesn’t want to follow their steps in this matter?” Rahmani said.

The Centre has countered the claim of the Muslim Law Board and said, “practices of triple talaq, polygamy and nikah halala cannot be regarded as essential part of religion and hence get no protection under fundamental right to religion.”

Rahmani and other Board officials today also indicated that they feel Muslims are discriminated against.

“Muslims equally participated in India’s freedom struggle, but their participation is always underestimated,” a Board official said.

The Commission, though, said its questionnaire asks for opinion on practices across religions – not just Islam – that many call anti-women, Justice BS Chauhan, chairman of the Law Commission, said earlier.

For example, while one question on the list of 16 is about triple talaq, another is asking the public what steps are needed to “ensure that Hindu women are better able to exercise their right to property, which is often bequeathed to sons under customary practices”.

Justice B S Chauhan, chairman of the Law Commission, said that formulating the questions was an elaborate affair involving several meetings of the Commission, in addition to consultations with numerous experts in the field.

“It took us two months to frame the questions keeping in mind prevailing customs and practices in different religions to elicit meaningful responses from the public,” he said.

Chennai: Police have registered 43 cases and arrested two persons in connection with posting of “malicious and false content” on social media about the health of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, undergoing treatment at a hospital here.

Police also warned of stern action against those spreading rumours about Jayalalithaa’s health. “In total, 43 cases have been registered in connection with posting of malicious and false content regarding the health condition of the Chief Minister on the social media,” police said in a release.

Special teams, constituted to investigate such cases, were working to identify those who had posted such “false and malicious content” on social media, it said, adding, such “offences are liable to be punished with rigorous imprisonment for more than seven years.”

“Users of social media are advised not to spread false, malicious and motivated information regarding the health condition of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Stern action will be taken against the culprits, if any such content is noticed,” police added.

Two persons have been arrested, one each from Namakkal and Madurai districts, by the Central Crime Branch of Chennai Police, following complaints made here.

A software engineer, Sathish Kumar from Devanankurichi in Namakkal “admitted” to having posted “malicious content” on Facebook, and he was arrested based on a complaint from the AIADMK IT Wing Secretary G Ramachandran, police said.

Further, one Madasamy, who operated a website and posted “malicious content” about the Chief Minister’s health, was arrested from Madurai, following a complaint from a Chennai-based resident, police said.

The two were arrested yesterday under different IPC sections for “spreading rumours with intent to cause riot, creating panic among general public, causing disturbance to public order and for creating hatred between two groups,” police said, adding, they were remanded to custody.

Jayalalithaa was admitted to the Apollo Hospitals on September 22 after she complained of fever and dehydration.

Marvel’s latest superhero is a Syrian mother living under siege!

October 11, 2016 by Nasheman

Madaya Mom Comic. (GalleyCat)

Madaya Mom Comic. (GalleyCat)

by Al Bawaba

Marvel Comics teamed up with ABC News to shed light on the devastating reality of life under siege in the form of a ‘Madaya Mom’ – a superhoero inspired from a real life Syrian mother.

The inspiration for the superhero chronicles was a woman living in Madaya, who remains anonymous for her own safety, and who chronicled her struggle to survive the horrific conditions brought on by the Syrian civil war in a series of blog posts.

Since Madaya — a city home to some 40,000 people near the border with Lebanon — was under total siege in mid-2015, more than 60 victims have died of famine and malnutrition.

The collaboration between Marvel and ABC journalists (namely reporters Xana O’Neil and Rym Momtaz, Croatian artist Dalibor Talajic, and colorist Miroslav Mrva) have been in regular contact with the ‘Madaya Mom’ to create a free digital comic chronicling survival dispatches as the characters face snipers, disease and starvation within the setting of the Syrian humanitarian crisis.

The illustrated panels are less bloody than they are heartbreaking as they depict a mother’s fears for her family and children which includes a new born baby boy. ‘Madaya Mom’ is shown as she and her husband gather their children together at night for warmth and to keep their spirits strong. Yet, even when the prospect of school reopening starts to lift the children’s spirits, an errant mortar shell rips their peers apart.

Artist Dalibor Talajic – best known for his work on Deadpool – said he preferred a character anchored in reality. From there came the idea of conveying the grim daily life of besieged Syrians from the perspective of a normal, human civilian.

This is not Marvel’s first portrayal of real life heroes: the company also depicted Pope John-Paul II, St Francis of Assisi and Mother Teresa.

ABC was able to deliver some of Talajic’s images to the mother: “she found that he really nailed the features of the people, the ambiance, the town,” ABC News Producer Rym Momtaz said.

“If she ever gets out,” artist Talajic said, “the pictures will go to her.”

‘Rs 1,000 cr to Rs 2,500 cr loss each year due to Cauvery crisis’

October 11, 2016 by Nasheman

cauvery-water

Nagapattinam/Bengaluru: Farmers of the Cauvery delta region on Monday told the Supreme Court-constituted high-level technical committee that they were incurring a loss of around Rs 1,000 crore to Rs 2,500 crore each year due to the Cauvery dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

The team was formed by the Supreme Court to assess the situation in the Cauvery basin in both the states.

The 14-member committee has been in the state since yesterday following its two-day trip to Karnataka.

The team, headed by GS Jha, Chairman, Central Water Commission (CWC), visited Karunkanni, Killukudi and Kilvelur villages in the district today.

Nagapattinam District Collector S Pazhanisamy and other officials accompanied the team.

Farmers showed the team members dry paddy fields and withered crops and explained the need for Karnataka to immediately release more water for their requirements.

Jha later told reporters at Karunkanni that the committee would submit a report on the ground realities to the Supreme Court before October 17.

Arupathy Kalyanam, general secretary of the Federation of Farmers’ Associations of the delta districts, submitted a memorandum to the committee.

He said though Mettur Dam was opened for irrigation on September 20, most of the tail-end areas had not received water yet. “As a result, farmers are not able to irrigate even the direct-sown paddy fields,” he said.

Stating that normally, samba cultivation is completed before the end of September every year, he alleged that for the past three decades, Karnataka had taken “complete control” of the Cauvery flows.

During most years, the delta areas did not receive adequate water from Karnataka, resulting in samba cultivation being postponed to October-November. So, when the northeast monsoon becomes severe, paddy crops face inundation in about four lakh acres, Kalyanam said.

“Due to this crisis, the delta farmers have been incurring a financial loss of around Rs 1,000 crore to Rs 2,500 crore every year,” he said in the memorandum.

Kalyanam said this year, around 4.25 lakh acres of direct-sown paddy fields in Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts were affected as Karnataka had refused to release adequate water.

In addition, samba transplantation has been completed in 40,000 acres and the crops were awaiting adequate water flows, said Kalyanam.

The team had inspected Mettur Dam, located about 150 km from Coimbatore on Sunday.

It had taken stock of the situation, including the water level, inflow and discharge of Mettur Dam.

India complete 3-0 whitewash of New Zealand, claim No.1 Test ranking

Indore: The Virat Kohli-led India made a perfect Dussehra gift to the cricket-mad nation as it mauled New Zealand by 321 runs in the third and final Test at the Holkar Cricket Stadium here on Tuesday.

Completing a 3-0 clean sweep in the series, India have now stamped their authority and clinched the No. 1 International Cricket Council (ICC) Test ranking from Pakistan. They had already bagged the top spot after winning the second Test at Kolkata.

Star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin once again single-handedly triggered another batting collapse of the Kiwis, to return with career-best figures of 7/59 in the visitors’ second innings, bundling them out for a paltry 153 in response to the mammoth target of 475.

Ashwin, who took six wickets in the first innings of the Test, took his overall tally to 13 in the match, besides pushing a total to 27 scalps in the three Tests.

The Chennai tweaker was well assisted by left-armer Ravindra Jadeja, who took two wickets in the second innings, while pacer Umesh Yadav chipped in with one wicket.

Ashwin was adjudged both the Man of the Match and Series for his heroics with the cherry during the series.

Such was the havoc wrought by the Indian spinners that the entire New Zealand second innings were wrapped up virtually in one session.

Faced with a Herculean task, the New Zealanders failed to provide any kind of resistance to the Indian spinners on a track which gradually turned slow and low as the days progressed.

Senior batsman Ross Taylor (32), opener Martin Guptill (29), skipper Kane Williamson (27) and stumper B.J. Watling (23 not out) got the kind of starts but failed to capitalise in their hurry for quick runs, which worked in favour of the hosts to wrap up the match on the fourth day.

Earlier, riding on Cheteshwar Pujara’s brilliant 101 and opener Gautam Gambhir’s 56-ball 50, India declared their second innings at 216/3 with an overall lead of 474 runs, just before the tea break.

Pujara was unbeaten on 101 runs off 148 balls with Ajinkya Rahane (23 not out) batting at the other end when Kohli decided to declare the innings midway through the post-lunch session.

The Saurashtra batsman, who has been in good form in this series, thus completed the seventh century of his Test career. He has also scored three half-centuries during the series.

Among the Kiwi bowlers, off-spinner Jeetan Patel was the only one to bag wickets with figures of 2/56.

Patel trapped Kohli leg before shortly after lunch with a delivery that turned and hit the Indian captain on the pads after pitching just outside off stump.

The Kiwi spinner of Indian origin had dismissed Gambhir during the morning session. The third wicket, that of Murali Vijay, fell to a run-out. During the morning session, Gambhir and Pujara hit half-centuries to carry India to a dominant position at lunch.

Gambhir (50), who has won back his place in the team after quite a long gap, completed his half-century off just 56 deliveries before being sent back to the pavilion by Kiwi spinner Jeetan Patel.

Earlier in the match, Kohli’s (211) second double ton and Rahane’s brilliant 188 guided India to a mammoth 557/5 declared before Ashwin stepped up with six wickets to skittle the visitors out for 299 and give the hosts a 258-run lead.

Both the teams will now face off in a five-match One-Day International (ODI) series. The first match is slated for October 16 at the picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium at Dharamsala.

Muslim youth tortured to death by police for ‘objectionable’ WhatsApp post

October 11, 2016 by Nasheman

Whatsapp

Ranchi: In a case of police brutality, a Muslim youth breathed his last at a hospital in Ranchi after he was allegedly beaten tortured by police in Narayanpura Police station in Jamtara in Jharkhand.

22-year-old Minhaj Ansari, a native of Dighari village under Narayanpur police station, was picked up by police along with two others on October 3 on charges of posting provocative texts in a WhatsApp group.

According to local police the objectionable message posted on October 2 had the potential to trigger communal tension in the region. On October 4 the police released two others and continued to detain Ansari.

The two people who were released bore the marks of police torture throughout their body. They informed that Ansari had lost his eyesight in the custody due to police torture. When the family members of Ansari rushed to the station, the cops told them that he was ill and taken to a local hospital in Narayanpura.

When the family members reached the local hospital they came to know that Ansari’s condition was extremely critical and he was already taken to the government hospital in Jamtara town. As his condition continued to worsen he was again shifted to Dhanbad for treatment on October 5.

The next day Ansari’s family members rushed to Dhandbad. However, Narayanpura SHO Harish Pathak reportedly denied them a chance to meet the victim. This led to a scuffle between Pathak and family members of Ansari.

On October 7, Ansari was again referred to Ranchi Institute of Medical Science, where family members were allowed to meet him. After seeing Ansari his mother almost fainted. As per reports in local media, his eyes were wide open and he could not see anything. His spine and legs were broken.

Mohammed Ilyas, a family member, said that Ansari did not respond when his parents called him. On October 9 doctors pronounced him dead.

A tense atmosphere prevailed in Dighari after the incident. Meanwhile, the family members of Ansari revealed that police have warned them that if any form of protest takes place in the region they would be held direct responsible.

They next day two senior police officers visited the aggrieved family and them that action would be taken against the police. They also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the deceased’s family. “Minhaj has a one-year-old daughter. What use is Rs 2 lakh, when you have killed her father,” asked Ilyas.

FIR against Sakshi Dhoni in multi-crore fraud case

October 11, 2016 by Nasheman

sakshi-dhoni

Mumbai: Sakshi Dhoni, wife of India’s limited overs cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, has been named in a multi-crore fraud case and an FIR has been filed against her.

The case, under section 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), was registered against Sakshi and three others on the complaint of Dennis Arora, a resident of Gurugram’s Nirvana Country township, according to a media report.

Sakshi, Arun Pandey, Shubhawati Pandey and Pratima Pandey are co-directors in Rhiti MSD Almode Private Limited, which has shares in Sportsfit World Private Limited, a gym and fitness centre. Sportsfit World, on the other hand, is co-directed by Dennis, and his father Vikas Arora owned 39 percent shares in the company, the report continues.

The directors of Rhiti MSD Almode Private Limited had decided to buy Vikas Arora’s shares from him.

Dennis alleged that while the agreement was for approximately Rs 11 crore, the directors of Rhiti MSD Almode Private Limited have paid only Rs 2.25 crore so far, and missed the 31 March deadline for clearing the dues. A complaint has been filed against Sakshi and her co-directors at the Sushant Lok police station in Gurugram, according to the report.

Arun Pandey, one of the directors of Rhiti MSD Almode Private Limited, however, said that they had paid more than the shares Vikas Arora had transferred.

Pandey added that Sakshi had left the company almost a year ago and the case could not be registered against her. Moreover, as the case is pending for arbitration after the Delhi High Court’s order, no FIR should have been registered.

Sakshi has so far not reacted to the allegations. Police are investigating the matter and at the moment there is no confirmation of Sakshi’s involvement in the case.

Activists seek NHRC probe into ‘farmer suicides epidemic’

October 10, 2016 by Nasheman

farmer-suicides

New Delhi: Holding multinational companies (MNCs) responsible for the “present agrarian crisis” that has forced over three lakh farmers to commit suicide in the last two decades, environmentalists and activists on Monday sought a NHRC probe into the “epidemic”.

Vandana Shiva of Navdanya and Krishan Bir Chaudhary of the Bhartiya Krishak Samaj submitted a petition to the National Human Rights Commission, urging it to probe the epidemic of farmer suicides in India, and direct the government to stop violations of the human rights of farmers.

The complaint highlights various aspects of human rights violations by MNCs and how each of these actions has resulted in the present agrarian crisis. It is prepared in compliance with the standards set forth in the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, as amended in 2006, and the NHRC (Procedure) Regulations, 1994, as amended in 1997.

“We have submitted lists of farmers who committed suicide since 1995, largely due to a debt trap created by dependence on high-cost seeds and chemicals,” said Shiva.

“With over 300,000 farmer suicides in India since 1995 and about 84 per cent of them in the Bt Cotton belt, there is ample proof that Bt Cotton is directly responsible for trapping farmers in debt and suicide cycle,” she said.

“Bt Cotton seeds are seeds of suicide. Wherever they are grown they have only brought death and debt to the farmers. If you look at Punjab or Vidarbha the number of suicides has increased, debt has risen and the rural economy has been ruined,” said Chaudhary.

The petitioners called on the NHRC to probe these issues as the violations of the human rights of farmers.
