Hyderabad beat Delhi in IPL tie

April 20, 2017 by Nasheman

David-Warner-Sunrisers-Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) dominated with both bat and ball to beat Delhi Daredevils by 15 runs in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here on Wednesday.

Electing to bat first on winning the toss, SRH posted a challenging total of 191/4 in their allotted 20 overs with quickfire half-centuries from Kane Williamson and Shikhar Dhawan.

Williamson scored 89 runs off 51 balls with six boundaries and five sixes while Dhawan posted 50 runs, studding his 50-ball stint with seven boundaries and a six.

In reply, Delhi could only manage 176/5. Shreyas Iyer was their highest scorer, remaining unbeaten on 50 runs which came off 31 balls with five hits to the fence and two sixes.

Mohammed Siraj was the most successful among the SRH bowlers with figures of 2/39.

Delhi suffered an early blow when opener Sam Bilings flicked a Siraj ball straight into the hands of Deepak Hooda at midwicket.

Sanju Samson and Karun Nair then joined hands to post a 71-run stand in 45 balls.

The visitors seemed to be coasting along nicely at that point, but the loss of two wickets in the space of just three balls completely changed the situation.

Nair was run out while attempting a run off Yuvraj Singh thanks to an accurate throw by substitute fielder V. Shankar.

Rishabh Pant, the next man in, registered a first ball duck when he tried to hit the ball outside the park but could only manage to find David Warner at long on.

Samson was the next to go, holing out in the deep while attempting to smash a slowish delivery from Siraj which was pitched at a full length just outside the off stump.

Samson was in good form, scoring 42 runs off 33 deliveries with three boundaries and a six.

Iyer and Angelo Matthews added 70 runs off 40 deliveries between them, but it was never going to be enough.

Earlier, brilliant batting from Dhawan and Williamson helped Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) post a challenging 191/4.

After losing skipper David Warner in the second over, Dhawan and Williamson thrashed Delhi bowlers all around the park as they together slammed 11 boundaries and five sixes to put Hyderabad in a comfortable position.

Hyderabad started of on a steady note but in the second over, Warner was dismissed by pacer Chris Morris.

Morris’s back of a length delivery outside the off-stump took the leading edge and Amit Mishra ran from fine leg to take a superb catch.

With the scoreboard reading 12/1, Williamson joined Dhawan and both forged a 136-run partnership for the second wicket in 14.2 overs before the former was sent packing in the 17th over by Morris.

The Kiwi skipper, who blasted six boundaries and five sixes in his 51-ball knock, tried to flick a full length delivery but got a top-edge to the deep mid-wicket and Iyer then completed a diving catch to dismiss Williamson.

With three overs remaining and new batsman Yuvraj Singh (3) at the crease, Dhawan, who was playing as support for Williamson, shifted gears and started attacking Delhi bowlers.

After slamming a couple of boundaries, Dhawan was also dismissed by Morris in the 19th over.

Yuvraj, who was dismissed on a golden duck in the last match, once again disappointed as he was bowled by Morris in the next delivery.

Moises Henriques (12) and Hooda (9) then completed the proceedings for Hyderabad with both players adding 21 runs in 1.4 overs to set a challenging target.

Panama Papers: Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif survives corruption ruling

April 20, 2017 by Nasheman

Supreme Court rules there is not enough evidence to order Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s removal over alleged corruption.

Nawaz-Sharif

by Asad Hashim, Al Jazeera

Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ruled there was insufficient evidence to oust Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over corruption allegations, but has ordered a high-level investigation into the charges.

The court issued its verdict on Thursday afternoon in a case based on the “Panama Papers” leaks that was moved by opposition leaders seeking his removal from office.

Sharif’s party declared the verdict a victory for his position that he was prepared to face any investigation.

“The Supreme Court has decided … the same thing that Nawaz Sharif himself had decided six months ago, when he ordered the formation of a commission to investigate [the allegations],” Khwaja Asif, a senior leader of Sharif’s ruling PML-N party, told reporters outside the courthouse following the announcement.

Sharif will remain in office during the course of the investigation, which will also focus on his sons Hassan and Hussain, the verdict said.

The bench, which was split 3-2 on the judgment, decided that the source of the funds and assets in question had still not been conclusively established, and it is this that the joint investigation team it has formed will focus on.

It was not immediately clear if there were any implications for Sharif’s daughter, Maryam, a prominent leader of his ruling PML-N party.

The judges ordered that the investigative body should be formed within seven days, and include representatives from the Federal Investigative Agency, the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, the central bank, and other bodies. It will submit fortnightly reports to the Supreme Court.

Corruption allegations

The allegations focus on Sharif’s previous two terms in office in the 1990s, with opposition politician Imran Khan and others alleging the prime minister and his family illegally profited from his position.

Security was tight around the capital Islamabad on Thursday morning, with dozens of police officers deputed to secure the government quarter where the Supreme Court is located.

In 2016, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) leaked 11.5 million documents from law firm Mossack Fonseca. Included in those documents were letters showing that three of Sharif’s children – Maryam, Hassan and Hussain – were listed as beneficiaries for three companies registered in the British Virgin Islands.

The documents showed these companies were involved in a 2007 loan of $13.8m, made using high-value Sharif-owned properties in the United Kingdom as collateral, and a separate 2007 transaction amounting to $11.2m.

Owning off-shore companies is not illegal in Pakistan, but Sharif’s political opponents allege this $25m was gained through corruption during his previous two terms in office as prime minister in the 1990s.

Sharif contends the money is in his children’s names and he was therefore not obliged to declare the assets on tax and other disclosure documents. Moreover, he claims it was raised through legitimate business deals, mostly based in the Gulf countries.

Late last year, the Supreme Court took up the case, after months of wrangling between the government and opposition over the formation of a commission to probe the allegations.

Man held for hoax e-mail about aircraft hijack threat

April 20, 2017 by Nasheman

Vamshi Krishna

Vamshi Krishna

Hyderabad: Police today arrested a person from here for allegedly sending a hoax e-mail to Mumbai police about a possible aircraft hijack attempt.

“Vamshi Krishna has been arrested for sending the hoax mail to Mumbai Police Commissioner about the aircraft hijack threat. Some incriminating material has been seized from his possession,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Task Force) B Limba Reddy told PTI.

On April 16, the security at international airports in Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai was put on maximum alert after the police forces of Maharashtra, Telangana and Tamil Nadu and the CISF were informed about a possible aircraft hijack attempt.

CISF Director General O P Singh had then said that the security apparatus at these airports was put on “an enhanced alert and protocols have been stepped up”.

“The e-mail could eventually turn out be a hoax but till investigations conclude all security drills to thwart a hijack like scenario are being carried out at the three airports,” he had said.

The Mumbai police on Saturday night received an e-mail, sent by Krishna impersonating as a Hyderabad-based woman.

The woman claimed to have overheard six men telling each other that “all 23 people have to split from here and board flights in three cities and hijack planes”.

“The unidentified woman wrote in the e-mail that what she heard could be ‘true or not’ but she chose to inform the authorities as she felt it was her duty to do so as a citizen,” a senior officer earlier said.

The contents of the e-mail were shared by Mumbai Police with security and intelligence agencies and a meeting of all the stakeholders at these airports was subsequently convened with the input being declared specific and actionable, he said.

China announces ‘standardised’ names for 6 places in Arunachal

April 20, 2017 by Nasheman

Arunachal

Beijing: Upping the ante, China has for the first time announced “standardised” official names for six places in Arunachal Pradesh, days after it lodged strong protests with India over the Dalai Lama’s visit to the frontier state.

The state media here said the move was aimed at reaffirming China’s claim over the state. China claims the state as ‘South Tibet’.

“China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs announced on April 14 that it had standardised in Chinese characters, Tibetan and Roman alphabet the names of six places in ‘South Tibet’, which India calls ‘Arunachal Pradesh’, in accordance with the regulations of the central government,” state-run Global Times reported today.

The official names of the six places using the Roman alphabet are Wo’gyainling, Mila Ri, Qoid ngarbo Ri, Mainquka, B mo La and Namkapub Ri.

The India-China border dispute covers the 3,488 km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC). While China claims Arunachal Pradesh as South Tibet, India asserts that the dispute covers Aksai Chin area which was occupied by China during the 1962 war.

The two sides have so far held 19 rounds of talks with Special Representatives to resolve the boundary dispute.

China’s move comes just days after the Dalai Lama’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh, which was seventh since he fled from Tibet through Tawang and sought refuge in India.

During the 81-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader’s Arunachal Pradesh visit, China had warned India that it will take “necessary measures” to defend its territorial sovereignty and interests.

Commenting on the standardisation of the names of six places, Chinese experts said that it was a move to “reaffirm the country’s territorial sovereignty to the disputed region”, according to the daily.

“The standardisation came amid China’s growing understanding and recognition of the geography in South Tibet.

Naming the places is a step to reaffirm China’s territorial sovereignty to South Tibet,” Xiong Kunxin, a professor of ethnic studies at Beijing’s Minzu University of China, was quoted as saying.

Xiong said that the legalisation of the regions’ names is a part of the rule of law.

“These names have existed since ancient times, but had never been standardised before. Therefore, announcing the names is like a remediation,” Guo Kefan, a research fellow at the Tibet Academy of Social Sciences, said.

Standardising the names from the angles of culture and geography could serve as a reference or leverage when China and India negotiate border issues in future, Guo said.

“The South Tibet region is located alongside China’s southwestern border and India’s north-eastern border where Sino-Indian border disputes are cantered,” the report said.

It claimed that India “abruptly announced that it was officially designating the region as ‘Arunachal Pradesh’ but the Chinese government has neither recognised India’s occupation of the region, nor the legitimacy of the province”.

During the Dalai Lama Arunachal Pradesh visit, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju, who accompanied the Tibetan spiritual leader, had asserted that that Arunachal Pradesh is “an inseparable part of India”.

China had lodged a diplomatic protest with India over the visit and warned that it would have a negative impact on the efforts to resolve the border dispute.

After the nine-day visit of the Dalai Lama to Arunachal Pradesh, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang had said that India should not use the Tibetan spiritual leader to undermine China’s interests.

BJP is with you: Amit Shah tells Advani after SC verdict in Babri Masjid demolition case

April 20, 2017 by Nasheman

babri masjid demolition

New Delhi: BJP president Amit Shah has reassured senior party leader LK Advani that the party supports him even as the Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed the CBI to put Advani, 89, Murli Manohar Joshi, 83, and Uma Bharti, 57, on trial after restoring the criminal conspiracy charges against them.

“The party is with you,” a news channel quoted Amit Shah as saying.

The report also said that according to sources, Shah called Advani on Wednesday evening after he finalised BJP’s strategy for handling the apex court verdict.

Top BJP leaders on Wednesday discussed the political and legal fallout of the Supreme Court verdict on the Babri mosque demolition that has come as a setback to the party’s sidelined veterans including Advani.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, union ministers Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari and M Venkaiah Naidu were huddled for two hours at Modi’s residence but a senior party leader played down the meeting’s significance, saying it had a number of issues, including the Kashmir crisis, on its agenda.

A senior leader insisted that it was a pre-scheduled meeting.

It is understood that the apex court verdict and its implications — political as well as legal — were also discussed with the leadership exploring various options to deal with it.

Bharti, who had earlier in the day said she would go to Ayodhya on Wednesday night, cancelled her visit apparently after being advised by the party leadership.

Some BJP leaders said the party would not like the message to go out that the “heroes” of its most resonant Hindutva movement, spearheaded by Advani in early 90s, were tried for criminal conspiracy when it was in power at the Centre as well in Uttar Pradesh.

For the record, senior leader and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the party will study in detail the court verdict before offering comments.

Prasad asserted that BJP highly respects its leaders like Advani and Joshi.

The party has held the position that the demolition of mosque was not planned but a spontaneous act of agitating ‘kar sevaks’ and there was no conspiracy behind its razing on 6 December, 1992 at the disputed site in Ayodhya.

The uneasy relationship that Modi and Shah share with Advani and Joshi also does not help the party.

Many critics of the BJP leadership have alleged that the verdict suits the party’s interest as it gives them a reason not to consider either of two veterans for the post of the president or the vice-president.

Echoing this sentiment, RJD chief Lalu Prasad, who as Bihar Chief Minister had ordered Advani’s arrest during his ‘rath yatra’, alleged that it was Modi’s “well thought-out politics” to rule out Advani’s name for the President’s post.

Today’s court order that the trial be completed in two years means that a verdict in the case will come around the time of the next Lok Sabha polls due in 2019, and may result in bringing back BJP’s core issue of Ram temple construction into limelight.

How Advani and Joshi will react to the development in the coming days is also an issue in the party.

A couple of leaders said their criticism of the party leadership since Modi took over as prime minister and Shah as its chief did not cut much ice with either the cadres or the masses.

It could be different this time around as the Ram temple movement remains an emotive issue in the BJP’s core constituency.

The development has also given a chance to Hindutva outfits to pressure the government over the issue.

VHP international president Pravin Togadia demanded that the central government appeal against the court verdict and also take measures to pave the way for the temple’s construction.

Kannada outfits call for Bengaluru bandh against ‘Baahubali-2’

April 20, 2017 by Nasheman

bahubali

Bengaluru: Sticking to their guns, pro- Kannada outfits today threatened they would not allow film “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” to release under “any circumstances” unless actor Sathyaraj tendered unconditional apology for his “anti-Kannadiga” remarks.

‘Kannada Okoota’, an umbrella organisation of Kannada bodies, has announced ‘Bengaluru Bandh’ on April 28, the date of release of the most anticipated Indian movie of the year, to protest the remarks of Sathyaraj, who plays the key character of ‘Katappa’ in the epic fantasy.

“The remarks made by Sathyaraj against Kannadigas during the Cauvery row (a few years ago) had crossed limits of decency. We will not allow the film to be released under any circumstances,” Vatal Nagaraj, who heads Kannada Okoota, said.

Kannada activists would stop the release in every district, Nagaraj, also the leader of Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha, a Kannada outfit, said.

“There is no scope for the release unless and until Sathyaraj tenders an unconditional apology,” he said, adding, “The exhibitors will have to bear the consequences if they venture to screen the film.”

The organisations were not against the film as such, but opposed to Sathyaraj’s remarks, he said.

Nagaraj said Kannada activists would stage a protest march on April 28 in Bengaluru and have sought the support of Kannada litterateurs for it.

Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce President and Kannada activist Sa Ra Govindu said Sathyaraj had hurt the “self- respect” of Kannadigas and there was no going back on stalling the release of the film till he apologised for making “provocative anti-Kannadiga remarks.”

Karnataka Rakshna Vedike President Pravinkumar Shetty said the release would not be allowed to take place anywhere in Karnataka, as it involved “self-respect” of Kannadigas.

You have no sense of responsibility: NGT slams Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

April 20, 2017 by Nasheman

sri-sri-ravishankar

New Delhi, Apr 20: The National Green Tribunal today slammed the Art of Living over its founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar blaming the Centre and the green panel for damage to the Yamuna floodplains, terming it as “shocking”.

“You have no sense of responsibility. Who gave you liberty to speak whatever you want to. It is shocking ,” a bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar said.

The observations came after advocate Sanjay Parikh, appearing for petitioner Manoj Misra, informed the bench about Ravi Shankar’s recent statement blaming the government and the NGT for permitting his NGO to hold the World Culture Festival on the floodplains of river Yamuna.

Parikh told the green bench that the spiritual guru has gone to the extend of levelling allegations against the NGT.

The lawyer said that Sri Sri had posted the statement on the website of the Art of Living, his Facebook page and also addressed the media on the same in a written statement.

The counsel appearing for the AOL foundation, however, contested the findings of the expert panel and said that they have certain objections with regard to the findings of the committee and sought setting aside of the report.

The bench then directed the foundation and other parties in the case to file their response and objection within two weeks and posted the matter for further hearing on May 9.

On April 18, Ravi Shankar had blamed the government and the NGT for permitting AOL to hold the festival on the Yamuna river bed and said they should be held responsible if any environmental damage was caused.

The AOL head said the foundation had obtained all necessary permissions, including from the green panel, and the event could have been stopped in the beginning itself if river Yamuna was so “fragile and pure”.

An expert committee had told the NGT that a whopping Rs 42.02 crore would be required to restore Yamuna floodplains which was ravaged due to a cultural extravaganza organised by AOL last year.

The expert panel has suggested that there would be two components of rehabilitation plan — physical and biological, and they would cost Rs 28.73 crore and Rs l3.29 crore respectively, besides additional ancillary expenses.

Rajkot: Swashbuckling West Indies opener Chris Gayle returned to form with a blistering 38-ball 77-run innings to power Royal Challengers Bangalore to a massive 213 -2 against Gujarat Lions in their IPL match here on Tuesday.

Invited to bat, Gayle and skipper Kohli gave Bangalore a blistering start as they amassed 45 in the first six overs and then went on to forge a 122-run opening partnership off 76 balls at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

Gayle’s innings was studded with five boundaries and seven massive sixes, while Kohli blasted seven fours and one six in his 50-ball innings.

Kohli took the early initiative as he picked up a boundary each in the first two overs before picking Dhawal Kulkarni for a special treatment, blasting three fours of the third over.

Gayle, who has been out of form, meanwhile completed his 10,000 runs in twenty20 cricket with a single off Basil Thampi in the fourth over.

The West Indies batsman then blasted one over mid-off to score his first six of the innings. He then sent young mystery spinner Shivil Kaushik for another maximum over long-off in the seventh over.

Gayle then exploded with successive fours and a six off left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja. He also blasted the last delivery of the over for a maximum but he was brilliantly caught by Brendon McCullum at the long-off boundary.

But the West Indies batsman survived after replays showed that McCullum’s hat had touched the boundary line.

Gayle made Lions pay as he brought up his fifty with a massive six over long on into the top-tier off Kaushik in the 10th over and then clobbered Dwayne Smith for another six as RCB reached the 100-mark.

The dashing opener sent Smith out of the park again for another six in the fourth ball over long-on as RCB picked 17 runs off the over.

In the 13th over, Basil Thampi finally dismissed Gayle when he trapped him leg before to break the partnership.

Kohli, however, continued to score runs and reached his 28th IPL fifty in the 15th over with a couple of runs off Kaushik. He then blasted a towering six over wide of long-on in the 4th ball.

Newman Travis Head (30) then sent the last ball for another maximum over deep midwicket.

In the next over, Kulkarni returned to dismiss Kohli, who holed out to deep midwicket with Smith taking the catch at the boundary line.

Head and Kedar Jadhav (38) then provided the late charge to take RCB across the 200-mark. While Jadhav cracked five fours and two sixes, Head hit two fours and a six in his innings.

US fires a fresh warning to North Korea

April 19, 2017 by Nasheman

Visiting Japan as part of trip to reassure allies, US vice president promises ‘overwhelming and effective response’.

mike pence

by Al Jazeera

The US will counter any North Korean attack with an “overwhelming and effective” response, Vice President Mike Pence has said.

He sounded the warning on Wednesday from the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, docked in Yokosuka, Japan.

Pence is in the region to reassure US allies unnerved by North Korea’s ongoing missile programme, and its apparent readiness to carry out another banned nuclear test in its quest to develop an atomic weapon that can hit the US mainland.

Pence, whose Asia visit started in South Korea on Sunday, just hours after the reportedly failed launch by North Korea of what analysts said could have been a new missile, said the threat from North Korea was growing.

“North Korea is the most dangerous and urgent threat to peace and security in the Asia-Pacific,” he told the audience of American and Japanese military personnel.

He pledged to “defeat any attack and meet any use of conventional or nuclear weapons with an overwhelming and effective American response”.

Pence’s comments come after a warning by a senior North Korean official that his government plans weekly tests and an “all-out war” if the US takes any action against it, and has no intention of going slow on its missile programme.

In an exclusive interview to Al Jazeera on Monday, Sin Hong-chol, North Korea’s deputy foreign minister, said: “The time of dictating orders by brandishing the US military might has gone.

“If those businessmen in power in the US thought of intimidating us by any military or sanction threats – as the [Barack] Obama administration used to do and failed – they will soon find out such threats are useless.

“If we notice any sign of assault on our sovereignty, our army will launch merciless military strikes against the US aggressors, wherever they may exist, from the remote US lands to the American military bases on the Korean Peninsula, such as those of Japan and elsewhere.”

That kind of rhetoric has unnerved allies in Japan and South Korea. Seoul, the South Korean capital, is within easy range of North Korean long-range artillery.

Al Jazeera’s Wayne Hay, reporting from Tokyo, said North Korea is dominating Pence’s visit in Japan, although he is also holding economic and trade talks with Japanese officials.

“I think this is really part of an assurance campaign from Mike Pence,” he said, “because there was a lot of concern – not just in Japan but around the Asia-Pacific region – when Donald Trump won the election in the United States that his ‘America First’ policy would undo a lot of the work done by his predecessor Barack Obama and his ‘pivot to Asia’.

“This visit is really about giving some assurances to governments and also to those in the business world, that the United States is not going to turn its back on this region, it’s not going to turn its back on Japan – either economically or militarily.”

Aircraft carrier confusion

The diplomatic developments come amid much confusion surrounding the path of the USS Carl Vinson.

The US navy has said another aircraft carrier intended as a show of force to North Korea will arrive in the Sea of Japan next week.

The navy had said on April 8 that it was directing a naval strike group headed by the Vinson to “sail north,” as a “prudent measure” to deter North Korea.

And on April 11, Jim Mattis, the Pentagon chief, said the Vinson was “on her way up” to the peninsula.

The next day President Donald Trump said: “We are sending an armada. Very powerful.”

But at the time of the announcements, the ships had temporarily headed in the opposite direction, to the Indian Ocean, for military exercises with Australia.

Al Jazeera’s Craig Leeson, reporting from Seoul on Wednesday, said the fleet was thousands of miles away from the Korean Peninsula during North Korea’s recent missile test and is still several days’ travel from there.

“It certainly brings into question the US bluff about its ability to strike North Korea at that particular time, and I am sure its allies are wondering now about the credibility of the US saying that it has South Korea’s back 100 percent,” he said.

In his remarks in Japan on Wednesday, Pence also issued a warning to China regarding the South China Sea, where it has built reefs and islets into fortified islands capable of hosting military assets to bolster its claim to sovereignty over the sea.

“Our treaty [with Japan] covers all the territory administered by Japan, including the Senkaku Islands,” he said, referring to an archipelago in the East China Sea that is controlled by Japan but claimed by China.

Freedom of navigation

Pence said the US would defend the right to freedom of navigation through the waterway, one of the most important shipping channels on the planet.

He also said more of the US’ most advanced military assets would be deployed to the Asia-Pacific.

Approximately 47,000 US troops are stationed in Japan and a further 28,000 in South Korea.
