Uproar in Bihar Houses over NGO scam; Oppn wants CM, DyCM to resign

August 23, 2017 by Nasheman

Patna: The alleged NGO scam in Bhagalpur rocked both Houses of the Bihar legislature for the second day today with opposition Congress and RJD raising slogans and demanding resignation of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi.

As soon as the Assembly met for the day, Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav drew the attention of Speaker Vijay Kumar Chaudhary to an adjournment notice given by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) over the alleged scam and urged him suspend the Question Hour and take up the issue.

The Speaker said the adjournment notice would be allowed at a proper time and urged the agitating members to allow the House to run. However, RJD members trooped in to the Well of the House raising slogans and demanding resignations of the CM and the deputy CM. Congress MLAs too joined them in the Well.

The protesting members claimed that pictures of Kumar and Modi were used at a function of NGO ‘Srijan’ in Bhagalpur. They alleged government money was fraudulently transferred to bank accounts of the NGO by a “well-oiled racket comprising government employees and bank officials”.

The chief minister was not in the House at the time. But, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi was present. As the opposition MLAs continued raising slogans, the Speaker adjourned the House till 2 pm.

BJP minister Nand Kishore Yadav rebutted Tejashwi saying “those acquiring benami properties through corrupt means have no moral right to speak on such a subject”.

In the Legislative Council, the matter was raised by Congress member Dilip Kumar Chaudhary. RJD and Congress members tropped into the Well of the Upper House shouting slogans against the government.

RJD leader Rabri Devi attacked Sushil Modi in the Legislative Council over the alleged scam. Later, talking to reporters outside the House, she demanded resignations of the chief minister and his deputy.

Modi had earlier said, “They should show documentary evidence in support of the charge against me or the CM. Merely shouting (slogans) by showing some photographs of some events showing our participation does not mean our involvement in the scam.”

2nd ODI: Formidable India ready to increase Lankan misery

August 23, 2017 by Nasheman

(AP Photo/Saurabh Das)

Pallekele: India will once again be expected to be at their ruthless best when they take on a Sri Lanka, which has hit the nadir in both form and confidence, in the second one day international, here tomorrow.

After a lop-sided 3-0 Test series victory, the script did not change much in the opening ODI, where India steamrolled the opposition by nine wickets.

Such has been Sri Lanka’s performance that supporters stopped the team bus demanding answers for a shoddy show. Chief coach Nic Pothas pointed out in no uncertain terms that all is not well within the team, indirectly pointing fingers at the interference from team manager Asanka Gurusinha.

Like it has happened during the past few months, Shikhar Dhawan pummelled the Lankan bowlers into submission with an unbeaten 132. For skipper Virat Kohli, it was business as usual with an unbeaten 82.

As such, it is tough to foresee any changes to the Indian playing XI. Only one out of five games have been played yet, and even in West Indies, Kohli resisted the urge to chop and change too much.

It is a similar scenario here as well. At Dambulla, India didn’t prefer to go in with either two leg-spinners or two left-arm spinners, thus forming the Chahal Patel’s orthodox leg break-left arm spin combination. Additionally, the ODI wickets in Sri Lanka do not afford the luxury of playing three spinners. Thus, unless the Pallekele wicket is exceptionally dry, Kuldeep Yadav can expect to be left out once again, along with Manish Pandey, Ajinkya Rahane and Shardul Thakur.

It will be interesting if Kohli shuffles his batting order a bit to give a KL Rahul and Kedar Jadhav, some batting time considering the inept Sri Lankan bowling which has failed to get the ‘Men In Blue’ out. There have been questions raised about Sri Lanka’s team selection policies. Test skipper and one of Sri Lanka’s most attacking batsmen Dinesh Chandimal was left out of the playing XI as ODI captain Upul Tharanga – generally an opener – came out to bat at No 4, where Chandimal bats.

This has set tongues wagging that all is not well in the Sri Lankan dressing room and that the coach and captain are being over-ridden by others. Pothas openly questioned the decision of leaving out Chandimal in the post-match conference. When asked about the influence of team manager Gurusinha and chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya, he came up with the classic “too many cooks” quote.

However, it doesn’t take the spotlight away from the simple fact that Sri Lanka once again failed to provide adequate challenge for the Indian team. If the Test series was evidence of the gap between the Nos 1 and 7 ranked teams, then on evidence of the Dambulla game alone, the ICC ODI rankings of India and Sri Lanka – Nos 3 and 8 respectively – are justified too.

This series too has all the makings of another one-sided contest and is not making for a good spectacle for the home fans, who clearly let their displeasure known during the first One Day International. Sri Lanka needs to win two ODIs in this series to make sure that West Indies do not overhaul them in the ODI ranking and gain automatic qualification for the 2019 ODI World Cup before the September 30 deadline.

The hosts need more responsibility and stability in their batting ranks and could look to bring back Chandimal if only to quieten down the heated atmosphere surrounding the team’s dismal performances recently. It is tough to see who will be left out though as the top-order did well enough to put the Indian attack under pressure until at least the 28th over when Lanka was placed at 150/3, thanks to the exploits of Danushka Gunathilaka, Niroshan Dickwella and Kusal Mendis.

They had resisted the Indian pace attack as well as one-half of their spin duo to lay the foundation of a decent- enough target, only to be let down by the lower order. In keeping with the coach’s words, some responsibility lies with the trio as well, for one of them was expected to hold one end together and go on to play big innings. This lack of in-game maturity, and experience as a whole is what sets them apart from the Indian top-order at present.

While Lanka will once again be struggling with these questions of overcoming self-doubt, the Indian camp will be wondering if they will be challenged at all during this tour. The Test series proved to be a cakewalk, and in that light, the selectors’ call to rest senior bowlers and experiment with younger blood has been justified. Whether the hosts step up or not, this is vital game time for the likes of Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal, with the Men in Blue already stepping up their preparations for the next World Cup.

Teams:
India: Virat Kohli (c), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Manish Pandey, Ajinkya Rahane, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni (wk), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shardul Thakur.

Sri Lanka: Upul Tharanga (c), Angelo Mathews, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, Chamara Kapugedera, Milinda Siriwardana, Malinda Pushpakumara, Akila Dananjaya, Lakshan Sandakan, Thisara Perera, Wanindu Hasaranga, Lasith Malinga, Dushmantha Chameera, Vishwa Fernando.

Indian-origin CEO racially abused by Trump supporters in US

August 23, 2017 by Nasheman

New York: An Indian-origin CEO was racially abused and told to “go back to India” and also take along Nikki Haley after he said that he will not support President Donald Trump’s economic agenda after the US leader appeared to defend white supremacists following the Virginia violence.

US-born Ravin Gandhi, 44 founder and CEO of GMM Nonstick Coatings, a global supplier of coatings for cookware and bakeware, wrote an op-ed for CNBC following Trump’s Charlottesville remarks but was quickly trolled and racially abused by readers, the Chicago Tribune reported.

“I recentlytold the New York TimesI was ‘rooting’ for certain aspects of Trump’s economic agenda,”Gandhi wrotein the op-ed. “After Charlottesville and its aftermath, I will not defend Trump even if the Dow hits 50,000, unemployment goes to 1 per cent, and GDP grows by 7 per cent. Some issues transcend economics, and I will not in good conscience support a president who seems to hate Americans who don’t look like him.”

Hundreds of white supremacists clashed with counter demonstrators at a rally in Charlottesville on August 12 in which a 32-year-old woman was killed and 19 injured when a car drove into a crowd of protesters. Gandhi was soon bombarded by hate comments on his option piece, including a voicemail from a woman who said Gandhi should “get your (expletive) garbage and go back to India.”

The woman, using abusive and inappropriate language, told Gandhi that he should also take “that other half-(expletive) Bangladesh (expletive) with you, Nikki Haley,” referring to the US envoy to the UN.
“She’s (Haley) the one that started all this when she took down the Confederate flag. So don’t tell us that you gave him a chance. We don’t give a (expletive) who you gave a chance, OK? We’re going to start taking down Buddhist statues and see how you and Nikki Haley like that,” the woman said.

In the minute and a half voicemail she said Gandhi should “go clean up your own (expletive) country, it’s a filthy mess.” Gandhi posted the voicemail to YouTube, Twitter and Facebook and shared some of the nastier emails he received as well, the report said.

“It was obvious that people thought my professional position somewhat protected me,” he said. “I wanted to show people that racism is blind to socioeconomics. It just is.” “Even though my race is a complete non-issue in my day- to-day life, the sad reality is there’s a group of racists in the USA that views me as a second-class citizen,” he said in the report. “I wanted my peers in the business community, the civic community, my friend community to see that this can happen to me. Because there’s this delusion that racism is dead because Obama was elected.”

Gandhi added that the fact that Trump “equated hate groups with those protesting hate lit me up” as he called Trump’s moral leadership on the issue “reprehensible.” He said while his sharing a “bigoted” voicemail may not make a big difference, but he will speak out against such abuse as long as he has a platform to do so.

“My heroes are Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, people who stood up against insane odds. And let’s be honest — I live in doorman-protected building in the Gold Coast. For me to say that I’m suffering in any real sense is insane. But many people in this city who don’t have resources really are suffering.”

“I know I’m on the right side of history here,” he said. “That’s how I sleep at night.”

Taliban: Afghanistan to become graveyard for US troops

August 22, 2017 by Nasheman

Armed group warns that the US president is wasting soldiers’ lives by sending thousands more troops to the country.

Afghan security forces have been killed at a ‘shockingly high’ rate in fighting against the Taliban [File: Reuters]

by Al Jazeera

The Afghan Taliban has warned Donald Trump is “wasting” American soldiers’ lives after the US president approved sending thousands more troopsto the war-ravaged country.

Taliban spokeman Zabiullah Mujahid said Afghanistan would become a “graveyard” for the US on Tuesday after dismissing Trump’s strategy as vague and offering “nothing new”.

“If America doesn’t withdraw its troops from Afghanistan, soon Afghanistan will become another graveyard for this superpower in the 21st century,” he said.

In his first formal address to the US as commander-in-chief, Trump backtracked from his election pledge to end America’s longest war that has dragged on for nearly 16 years.

Since taking office in January, Trump said he has realised that withdrawing could create a vacuum for groups such as al-Qaeda and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) to exploit.

Though his speech was billed as an announcement of his updated Afghanistan policy, Trump offered few specific details.

He did not, for example, provide a number of the additional troops that would be sent to the war.

READ MORE: SIGAR questions millions spent in Afghanistan

The US currently has around 8,400 troops in the country, down from a peak of about 100,000 troops in 2010 and 2011, with around 5,000 from NATO allies assisting a much larger Afghan force in the war against the Taliban and other armed groups.

A senior Taliban commander told the AFP news agency that Trump was perpetuating the “arrogant behaviour” of previous US presidents, such as George Bush.

“He is just wasting American soldiers. We know how to defend our country. It will not change anything.

“For generations we have fought this war, we are not scared, we are fresh and we will continue this war until our last breath.”

Al Jazeera’s Jennifer Glasse, reporting from the Afghan capital Kabul, said the Taliban was taking a very hard line to the president’s speech.

“The Taliban has made it clear they’re committed to continue fighting the enemy and are in-turn giving the US latitude to do so.

“Both President Bush and Obama said they would take the fight to the Taliban … but it remains to be seen whether Trump’s plan can yield any different results.

“The Afghan government has been very bullish on the new strategy, but since we don’t know the specifics we don’t know what Trump plans to do differently.”

The war in Afghanistan, which began on October 7, 2001, after the September 11 attacks, has claimed the lives of more than 2,200 US troops and cost more than $800 billion.

There is no official figure of the number of Afghan civilians killed but estimates range between 25,000-30,000. According to the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), at least 1,662 civilians were killed between January 1 and June 30 this year.

While Trump has refused to offer detailed figures, senior White House officials said he had already authorised his James Mattis, the defence secretary, to deploy up to 3,900 more soldiers.

In his speech, Trump also lambasted ally Pakistan for offering safe haven to “agents of chaos”.

“We have been paying Pakistan billions and billions of dollars at the same time they are housing the very terrorists that we are fighting,” he said.

“It is time for Pakistan to dedicate to civilization and order and peace.”

A commander from the Taliban-allied Haqqani network told the AFP news agency that Trump’s speech was proof of “a Crusade”.

“His statement has proved that he wants to eliminate the entire Muslim [community],” he said.

Prior to Trump’s announcement, the Taliban had written an open letter warning him not to send more troops and calling for the complete withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan.

A School Engagement App that empowers, Schools, Students and Parents

August 22, 2017 by Nasheman

Trika – The School Connect, is the new App in the block that’s revolutionary in many senses. It’s an effective combination of App and Web Tools. The App has been created keeping in mind the needs of the School, the lacuna Parents want to be filled and a professional approach to Students engagement.

Trika is an all rounder, which offers many thoughtful features that are built to offer Transparency, Convenience, Communication, Engagement and Benchmarking.

School Benefits:

  • In today’s context, Data is everything. Trika App offers easy Data Analytics right in the dashboard for Head of School and School Administration.

For e.g., the Daily Class Report Feature (comprising class work & home work) is just not a tool to update Parents, but also is a measure of performance of the Teachers as well as empowers the School Head to know whether the curriculum roll out is in sync with their roadmap. This becomes imperative for management boards of large chain of Schools.

  • Convenience and Security are the DNA of Trika App. For schools that are yet to get their own Digital Payment services, Trika offers a simple and reliable online payment gateway to pay Term Fees, Transport or any other charges through Net Banking, Debit / Credit Cards.

This service is so flexible. Schools can customize, generalize, edit, alter, add or delete modules of payments for the whole school, class or even a specific single student. On successful receipt of payment, it is directly credited to the School’s bank account as per RBI guidelines. An exclusive Dashboard is provided to all the Schools availing this to track complete information of who, how much, for what, when.

  • Trika App has thoughtfully created clusters or Interactiv e Forum as a multi channel communication. Only bonafide Students and Parents of a particular section of a class like 6A or 12B are given access to interact with their fellow students and parents under the supervision of authorized class Teacher.

It is a safe community for Students. Schools get to know insights about Parents’ aspirations and expectations as they also interact in the same forum (Currently, Parent groups are formed in WhatsApp, where the School doesn’t have any access. And Parents only have the PTA meetings to air their views.)

  • Visual Report Cards are a brand new way to present the marks, score, grade of students.

Teachers need no Graphical Skills to create these Visual Report Cards. Just fill in the marks and class average. Voila the graphs are automatically created. This enlightens the students and parents to understand where they stand vis-a-vis their class to improve on strengths and shortcomings.

  • Notification is a common feature. Many Schools use this feature even through an SMS. However, we’ve improvised it with customizations.

A Class Teacher of say 8C can send notifications concerned to her class to all the students and parents in one go. If she wants to notify a specific student or just a specific parent, it’s easy to choose and message them from Trika. On the other hand, Head of School or School Admin can send messages that are notified to all the students and parents of their School. However, if they wish to send inputs to Teachers, they have the flexibility to customize it for every individual Teacher or send general info to all Teachers.

  • Regional Language Schools, especially the Government ones benefit even more because Trika App is rolled out with options of Indian languages. Currently, the App is available in English, Tamil, Hindi and Marathi. Soon other languages will be added, including international languages as we go global.

Teacher Benefits:

  • Online Leave Application Feature adds to convenience. This feature is enabled to both Teachers and Parents.

Parents can conveniently send a Leave Application to the concerned Teacher for their ward. Teachers can also apply for Leave online. A Leave Tracker feature will be added soon.

  • As the Admin of the Interactive Forum of her specific class, the Teacher can not only answer queries, post interesting information, but also delete conversations if she finds is going way beyond public decorum.

For instance, parents airing grievances is an important feedback for the School. However, when it turns into a rant, the Teacher can simply delete it.

  • Teachers, who are also Parents and maybe Principal, can simply switch roles from within Trika App and get access to relevant details.

This will add convenience to say a Principal, who also teaches Chemistry and whose children are studying in the same or different school. Of course, the other school should also be using Trika App.

Students Benefits:

  • Planner & Scheduler with a Task Completed button. A simple feature as it may sound, however, for a Student it puts him on par with their professional Parents. They can Plan their Studies, Schedule their Home work, extra-curricular activities, play time, To Do list, Birthdays, etc from the easy web tool of Trika App.

A Student can plan and schedule, say Playtime: 6-7 pm, Maths Tuition: 7:30 – 8:30 pm, Study Science: 9-9:30 pm.  Karate Class: Thursday 7-8 pm. Piano Class: Saturday 10-11 am. Anjana’s birthday August 31st, etc. This also helps them manage time effectively. And when they hit the Task Completed Button, it gives them a sense of accomplishment too.

  • In today’s time, when the youth is hooked to facebook & whatsapp, Trika App is a blessing in disguise. The interactive forum helps them connect with their classmates. They can do Group Study without leaving the home. Project work can be effectively coordinated between teams. Ask doubts, get answers, post, comment, share images, documents, pdf, ppt, links, etc.

Students’ craving for digital connectivity with their friends is taken care. The flexibility of sharing info or inputs is familiar to them. Since they are aware they’re being monitored remotely, they’ll try to impress upon their classmates, parents and teacher by sharing subject related links, images, PPT, PDF, etc. At least, Trika will take away 20% time they spend online on useless messengers and social platforms.

Parent Benefits:

  • Student Appraisal is a unique feature. Every month, Teachers use a simple rating system across customizable parameters like for e.g. Leadership, Communication Skills, Sports, Teamwork, Singing, Dance, etc.

Since Report Cards only relate to proficiency in subjects taught, Student Appraisal gives a new dimension and perspective. Parents get to discover hitherto unknown qualities, strengths and shortcomings of their children.

  • When students plan and schedule tasks or hit the task completed button, the Parents are notified about the same without the intrusion.

Parents don’t have to ask their wards about what they’re doing, because they already know about it. This becomes imperative in case of teenage students and students studying in boarding schools.

  • Parents who have more than one school going child, studying in the same or different schools, simply have to switch the Student option to get access to relevant information.
  • Interact with other students and their parents in the forum.
  • Pay fees online
  • Apply Leave for their child online

“More thoughtful features will be added in the days to come”, says Mr. Magesh, Founder. He adds, “Trika is a game changer. It’ll revolutionize the conventional engagements of Schools.” Trika App will put government schools on par with their private counterparts. And help state education departments to function better with data on their hand.

In a nutshell, Trika App is an all rounder, that’ll eventually emerge into an ERP+ for schools in a shoestring budget.
