by Al Jazeera

The death toll from Saturday’s truck bomb blast in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, has surged to at least 276 people, according to the country’s information minister.

Abdirahman Osman on Sunday said on Twitter that around 300 others were also wounded in the powerful explosion at a busy road junction, which flattened nearby homes and businesses and turned vehicles into burned wrecks.

He called the attack “barbaric” and said a number of countries, including Turkey, Ethiopia and Kenya, had already offered to provide medical assistance.

“We will observe three days of mourning for innocent victims, flags will be flown at half-mast. Time to unite and pray together. Terror won’t win,” Mohamed said in a statement posted on the presidency’s official Twitter account early on Sunday.

The president also urged residents to help those affected by the attack.

“I call on our citizens to come out, extend help, donate blood and comfort the bereaved. Let’s get through this together,” Mohamed said.

The blast, described by Mogadishu residents as the most powerful they had witnessed in years, also left dozens wounded.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Emergency services were overstretched and worked late into the night as they tried to rescue people who were trapped in the destroyed buildings.

The city’s mayor called on residents to donate blood as hospitals were running out of blood.

“I call on the Somali people to visit the city’s hospitals and donate blood. Please, come to the rescue of your brothers,” Thabit Abdi Mohammed, told reporters after donating blood at a local hospital.

The attack came 48 hours after both the defence minister and army chief of the country resigned from their posts without explanation.

SIT releases sketches of Gauri Lankesh’s murder suspects

October 16, 2017 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the murder of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh on Saturday released three sketches of two persons suspected to be her killers.

“Three sketches of two suspects have been made on the basis of their description by eyewitness. Two sketches of one suspect were made by two sketch-makers as per eyewitness account,” SIT Head and Inspector General of Police (IGP) B.K. Singh told reporters here.

Lankesh, 55, editor of Kannada weekly tabloid “Gauri Lankesh Patrike” was shot dead outside her house in the city’s southwest suburb on the night of September 5, sparking outrage and nationwide protests.

“We have got video clips of a motorcycle rider who is suspected to be involved in the commission of the offence,” asserted Singh.

Giving an account of the investigation conducted over the last one month, Singh said the suspects, aged between 25-35 years, were residing in the city for at least one week before they committed the crime.

They carried out a “recce” around Lankesh’s home prior to committing the crime, he said.

“We request the public to help us find them or their hideouts in the city, across the state or country,” added Singh.

Riots Accused BJP MLA says Taj Mahal a blot on Indian culture

October 16, 2017 by Nasheman

Noida: BJP leader Sangeet Som has triggered controversy by saying the Taj Mahal is a “blot” on Indian culture and misquoted history by saying that Shah Jahan, builder of the 17th century marble mausoleum, had jailed his father and wanted to wipe out Hindus from the country.

The remarks by the Sardhana MLA in Meerut came after the Uttar Pradesh government removed the Taj Mahal from the list of attractions in its tourism booklet.

“Many people were disappointed that the Taj Mahal was removed from the UP tourism booklet. What history are we talking about? Whose history?

“The creator of the Taj Mahal (Shah Jahan) imprisoned his father. He wanted to wipe out all Hindus from India. If these people are part of our history, then it is very unfortunate.

“I guarantee you that we will change this history,” Som was shown saying in an undated viral video, apparently addressing a public gathering.

TV reports said the BJP leader was addressing a gathering in Meerut.

Som wrongly quoted history saying Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan had jailed his father. It was Shah Jahan’s son Aurangzeb who had dethroned and jailed his father inside the Agra Fort.

The Taj, one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage site, was built by Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.

CRPF jawan arrested over social media posts against Modi

October 16, 2017 by Nasheman

Guwahati: Police in Assam’s Jorhat district have arrested a CRPF jawan for making objectionable comments on social networking sites against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Jorhat Superintendent of Police P.K. Bhuyan said on Monday that Pankaj Mishra was arrested from the Central Reserve Police Force camp at Rowriah based on an FIR lodged by Battalion Commander B. Behra.

Bhuyan said that a case was registered against Mishra under different sections of the IT Act.

Mishra was produced in a court and remanded to judicial custody, police said.

Mishra, who hails from Bihar, had not only made objectionable comments on the social media against Modi and Singh but also accused the CRPF top brass of using the jawans for their personal chores.

He was suspended after his posts went viral on social media.

Apart from this incident, Mishra had earlier posted on Facebook some videos about a Naxalite attack on a CRPF camp in Durgapur and was later transferred to Jorhat.

Bengaluru rains: Girl drowns in drain, death toll mounts to 10 in 15 days

October 16, 2017 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: A 16-year-old girl drowned in an overflowing drain today, taking the death toll from rain- related incidents in the city to 10.

The incident happened at Krishnappa Garden here. Narasamma had gone to attend nature’s call and she accidentally slipped into the drain.

Her body was later recovered at some distance from the slum where her family resides.

The family hailed from a northern district of Karnataka and they worked as construction labourers in the city.

Meanwhile, the city civic body Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike along with the National Disaster Response Force and the State Disaster Response Force fished out the body of 22-year-old Pushpa from a storm-water drain at Kumbalgodu this morning.

Pushpa and her mother Ningamma were washed away in the storm water drain following heavy rains in the city on Friday night.

Officials involved in search operations said efforts were on to recover Ningamma’s body.

The 10 deaths in the past 15 days in mishaps due to potholes and incessant rains have triggered a political slugfest between ruling the Congress and the BJP.

Speaking to reporters in Mysuru, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah hit out at the BJP for politicising the issue.

He said his government has taken up the repair work and clearance of the 850-km storm water drain network in the city by allocating Rs 800 crore.

“No government including the BJP has done it in the past. Now they are playing politics over deaths,” he said.

Siddaramaiah said he had been residing in Bengaluru since 1983 and he had never seen such large scale rains.

About 46 days in the last two months gauged heavy rains, he said, adding “our drainage system and storm water drains do not have the capacity to bear it”.

BJP state president Yeddyurappa who visited the rain affected areas yesterday had squarely blamed Siddaramaiah for the deaths.

Reports quoting MeT department officials suggested the city has witnessed about 1,620 mm of rainfall this year so far, breaking the record of about 1,600 mm of precipitation in 2005.

The department has predicted generally cloudy sky in and around Bengaluru, one or two spells of rain and heavy showers in some areas in the next 48 hours. Meanwhile, there were reports of heavy rains from different parts of the state.

In neighbouring Ramanagara, a 35-year-old man was washed away as he slipped into an overflowing pit.

BJP seeks ED probe into Shiv Sena’s ‘horse-trading’ of MNS corporators

October 16, 2017 by Nasheman

Mumbai: A day after the MNS President hurled allegations of “horse-trading” of his party corporators against his cousin and Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray, the BJP on Monday demanded an Enforcement Directorate probe into the matter.

On Sunday, Raj Thackeray accused rival Shiv Sena of “buying out” six out of seven Maharashtra Navnirman Sena corporators in the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation for alleged payouts of Rs 5 crore each some three days ago.

Taking note, Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Mumbai Kirit Somaiya on Monday wrote to ED Joint Director Satyavrat Kumar seeking action for “corruption, money-laundering, anti-democratic activities and other malpractices” indulged in by Shiv Sena which engineered the defection of the six MNS corporators to its fold.

“Request to investigate. All actions of/by these six MNS corporators be observed/put on hold till the investigation completed,” Somaiya urged the ED.

Quoting Raj Thackeray, he said it was “money laundering” by Shiv Sena and the six MNS corporators were paid Rs 5 crore each.

Somaiya also referred to a “hawala transaction” between Chandrakant Patel of Pushpak Bullion and the Shiv Sena and MNS corporators in the matter.

He pointed out that Patel was arrested for money-laundering not long ago by the ED which had reportedly detected similar transactions between him (Patel), the Shiv Sena and its leaders.

In a major political development, on October 13, the six MNS corporators suddenly walked over to the Shiv Sena after which a stunned BJP cried foul, accusing its ally of “horse-trading” and lodging complaints with Maharashtra State Election Commissioner, Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Konkan Development Commissioner.

The MNS chief, whose party is now reduced to a single BMC corporator, attacked his estranged cousin Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday, charging him with playing “low-level” (neech) politics and allegedly buying the corporators.

Hamas: Deal reached with Palestinian rival Fatah

October 12, 2017 by Nasheman

Hamas leader Ismail Haneiya (R) meets Egyptian Intelligence Minister Khalid Fawzi at his office in Gaza City earlier this month [EPA]

by Al Jazeera

Palestinian rival factions Hamas and Fatah have reached a deal over political reconciliation, Hamas leader and former prime minister Ismail Haniyeh said in a statement on Thursday, without providing further details.

Further information will be announced at a noon news conference (10GMT) in Cairo, where unity talks between the rival factions began on Tuesday.

“Fatah and Hamas reached an agreement at dawn today upon a generous Egyptian sponsorship,” Haniyeh said in a statement.

The Western-backed mainstream Fatah party lost control of Gaza to Hamas in fighting in 2007. But last month Hamas agreed to cede powers in Gaza to President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah-backed government in a deal mediated by Egypt.

The meetings in Cairo are centred around implementing the 2011 Cairo Agreement between the two political parties, in hopes of ending the 10-year political schism.

A party to the negotiations, who asked not to be identified, told AFP news agency the agreement would see forces of the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority, which is dominated by Fatah, take control of the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt.

He added all Palestinian factions would begin wider negotiations on the formation of a national unity government in the coming two weeks.

Egypt has been eager to improve security in the Sinai Peninsula that borders Gaza, where fighters launched a long-running campaign of attacks.

Last month, Hamas agreed to cede civil power in Gaza to the Palestinian Authority, but the fate of its vast military wing remains a significant issue for the two sides.

An Egyptian source close to the talks said intelligence chief Khaled Fawzi had followed the discussions closely.

The 2011 agreement stipulated that legislative, presidential and national council elections should be conducted within one year of its signing. The deal would see both Hamas and Fatah form a Palestinian government to appoint the prime minister and ministerial positions.

Over the last few months, Hamas has been under heavy pressure from Abbas’ measures against Gaza, aimed at pressuring Hamas to relinquish control of the territory. Punitive measures included cutting the salaries of PA employees living in Gaza and requesting Israel to reduce the electricity supply to the territory.

The deal could temporarily ease Gaza’s dire humanitarian situation.
